Mechanics Failing Jameis, Explains Ex-Buc QB

November 2nd, 2018

Bad feet. Wrong offense.

Those were two reviews of America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, and his Bucs status, by a man who played the position.

Ex-Bucs and Patriots QB Jeff Carlson, a local resident who has been privately training quarterbacks for decades (a former JoeBucsFan columnist, too) hopped on The Rock Riley Show on 1040 AM this week to talk Bucs.

Yes, the subject of Jameis arose and Carlson had plenty to say.

Among many things, Carlson said the Bucs’ offense doesn’t suit Jameis but he believes an offense could be designed around the strengths of Jameis.

The arm of Jameis is much better than his feet, Carlson added, saying Jameis “still has awkward feet” and whoever has been coaching him privately “isn’t doing him any favors.”

That poor footwork and Jameis’ associated comfort level, Carlson said, has improved since he was drafted but “doesn’t compare with at least 20 other NFL quarterbacks.”

One thing Carlson said made Joe applaud: Success for Jameis in preseason football is nearly meaningless. Carlson quipped that even he was a good preseason QB and Jameis primarily was playing against second-teamers during the 2018 preseason. (Joe still can’t believe intelligent football men reference how well Jameis played this preseason. NFL history is filled with August legends.)

Carlson approves of the QB switch to Ryan Fizpatrick. He likes the better yards after catch (YAC) with Fitzpatrick, and said “it’s never been good with Jameis.” He also likes Fitzpatrick’s more mature decision-making.

“What made Brad [Johnson] a Super Bowl quarterback was he knew what to do with the football when his first two receivers were covered. … Jameis still isn’t good at that,” Carlson said.

If Fitzpatrick struggles, Carlson said he’d like to see what Ryan Griffin can do in real games.

The Bucs offense doesn’t suit Jameis?

He’s been the centerpoint of the whole team for 4 years how does the offense not suit him?

  2. 813bucboi Says:

    he’s spot on….

his mechanics are screwed(again)….the QB coach aint doing his job(again)……the 4vert offense sucks(at least with Winston)…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  3. Bird Says:

    Nailed it!

And it kept being brought up as a sign of great things to come for Winston as comparing how well fitz started out that Jameis would do the same cause of his great preseason ..

Who cares what someone does or doesn’t do in preseason. Vanilla defense vanilla offense. How many players have been preseason /camp darlings to never be seen again. Example – the receiver from Nebraska Can’t even remember his name cause he is now a ghost

  4. Ludicrous Speed Says:

I agree with most of what Carlson was saying. I think Fitz should get November without having to look over his shoulder and if it goes to pot give December to Griffin and see what he’s really got. You never know, just look at what Nick “Moon” Mullens was able to accomplish last night.

Bucs just suck ….. Tired of losers and fans of losers

  7. Anonymous Says:

Time for you to root for the Patriots, Lamarcus…. and the Red Sox…. and the Golden State Warriors. – You should be all set, then.

  8. SKomsky Says:

great assessment, I have been thinking that all along. I thought the offense actually plays into his weaknesses too much. If the management decides to keep him IMO the offense needs to change to reflect what is now known from actual play to limit his weaknesses and emphasize his strengths.

  9. jjbucfan Says:

This is exactly what I have been saying for 3 years. Jameis should be in the shotgun (without Marpet snapping him the ball mind you) and he should be on designed roll outs and he should be QB sneaking on 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1. He should have more designed screens (not stupid WR screens that get blown up right away). Koetter designed this offense not around Jameis, he designed this offense around the 1990’s. Coaches that can not change their scheme to fit the talent that they have, are sh*t coaches in my opinion. Dirk Koetter/ Willie Taggart/ Jim McElwain come to mind.

  10. Fartman Says:

I gotta say… Carlson nailed. Jameis locks on a receiver. The ball is rarely in the right spot, and he throws a ton of INTs… other than that he’s great.

  11. AlteredEgo Says:

Jamyth has had plenty of good coaching including proper mechanics……thing is Jamyth either forgets of rejects the proper coaching when under pressure and reverts to his high school heroics style of play….this speaks to Jameis’s intelligence ….Jameis is as Jameis does….going…going ..gone…

  12. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Jameis just isn’t intelligent enough to be a great NFL QB

  13. Ludicrous Speed Says:

It’s an illegitimate argument to blame Koetter saying “he had one job, to groom Jameis, and he didn’t get the job done.”

You have to take into account that Winston is pig-headed to the point of being virtually dumb as a post. We’re not talking football IQ here, but teachability. DK has tried to train him but he’s so full of himself, thinking he knows better than his teachers, that the good seed of the training imparted upon him is unable to permeate the hard ground of his thick, stubborn skull.

Even Joe gave evidence of this when he wrote in “The Three Giant Football Red Flags On Jameis:

Screwy mentality: After all the coaching of Jameis to protect the football like it’s his first-born son, after all the drilling to play within in the offense, Jameis admitted that wasn’t his priority in last year’s season finale.

The Throw In Tennessee: Remember that ill-advised prayer of a heave to the end zone this preseason that Jameis threw to Chris Godwin against the Titans? It was a touchdown highlight, but it was exactly the decision Jameis had been coached over and over and over again not to repeat. Lips were tight at One Buc Palace after that throw. Dirk Koetter was not smiling about it at all. The inexplicable nature of that throw, Joe believes, is tied to Jameis’ problems today.”

“it was exactly the decision Jameis had been coached over and over and over again not to repeat.”

“COACHED OVER and OVER and OVER”

That’s the bottom line. “Miyagi promise teach karate. That’s my part.
You promise learn. I say, you do, no questions. That’s your part.”

Winston has NOT done his part. Joe documents this and I’m sure there are plenty of other instances. Ira Kaufman said on PFT, “Jameis is a very confused young man. He’s in his 4th year and he’s regressing.” Again, he’s confused because he thinks he knows better than his teachers, so he doesn’t listen to them. He listens to the voice in his head that keeps telling him he’s so good that he can do things he’s been told not to, yet when he attempts them, he not only fails but ends up looking foolish.

Dan Patrick talked about this and Mike Florio has extensively: that Winston always looks like, in his mind he thinks he is able to do things that he is not capable of, that he has no awareness of his limitations. A great QB knows his physical limitations and goes right to the edge, but not beyond. E.G. Rodgers, Mahomes.
Winston thinks he’s better than he really is and it’s why he makes so many awkward looking plays.

He won’t let anybody tell him differently. Unless he changes his attitude he’ll never get any better. First one must be teachable… coachable.

  14. Bucnmike Says:

I too would like to see what Ryan Griffin could do. I believe we have a stud Q.B. and don’t know it. Give him a look. Go Bucs.

  15. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

^^ It has nothing whatsoever to do with intelligence, #7423. By all accounts, Jameis is very intelligent.

  16. Brandon Bob Says:

    Jbuc,

We have a top five offense now! So the offense obviously works, just not so good with Jw. If Jw would check it down once in awhile, rather than trying to be a hero, it will work with him also. Even Aaron Rogers checks down continuously, sucks defenses in and then goes downfield. He’s setting up future pays, what a concept. Drew Brees does the same thing….get it?

  17. AlteredEgo Says:

    EXCELLENT !!

  18. stpetebucsfan Says:

So after last night do we still want Carr? LOL

He reminds me of Jameis…plenty of success combined with disaster.

BTW is that team a HUGE mess right now? They’re fighting on the sidelines…can’t wait to bail on Chucky! How lucky does Amari Cooper feel right now.

Chucky said after the game that people still want to be Raiders and he gets texts from players all over the league. Right!!!

As far as Carlson’s observations I obviously do not disagree and he knows way more than me anyway.

But I’ve heard how clumsy and slow JW is since his FSU days. Yet he might be the most deceptive athlete I’ve ever seen. Slow…a bit awkward…but the dude can run and he’s deceptively elusive. He and Fitz can both run the ball…Fitz is just faster and a little more conventional.

  19. Resurrection of Duff Says:

Remember people Jameis call his own play during the Cleveland game. Just maybe Jameis “I GOT TO DO BETTER” Winston is not listening to his Quarterback coach. Maybe ?!?!?!

Skip Winston and save 20 mil. Let Griffin be the No. 2 QB

    Go Bucs!!!

  20. BradentuckeyBuc Says:

    Let’s replace all the #weaponsforwinston with #Dominatorsforduffman.

    Let America’s p*$$y Grabber throw 11 times a game Ravens/Dilfer style.

  21. Resurrection of Duff Says:

4th Year plan was to be able to hit DJax in stride to create yacs.

    FITZMAGIC DOOMED JW.

  22. Knucknbuc Says:

Lol designed the offense around the 1990s and yet it’s the highest ranking offense in the NFL. How sway? All bec Jameis is colorblind in 1 eye doesn’t mean you can blame koetter for his affinity for turnovers.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

A person can be intelligent and stupid nonetheless…

    How so? You ask.

Jameis is intelligent enough to know that certain passes aren’t a good idea…..but stupidly throws them anyway.

This is more about ego…..”my arm is strong enough to squeeze it in there”…Oops…I was wrong….and the famous Jameis quote…”I’ve just got to get better….and now “I’ve got to fix it.”

Vinny Testeverdy was exactly the same……tried to make throws he shouldn’t.

  24. Jf Says:

    Lol Lamarcus is really Jameis

  25. Dewey Selmon Says:

2 things I will always remember Jameis for. Being suspended and dressing for the pre game warm ups at FSU and cock roaches screwing.

  26. DB55 Says:

I’d always ask one question when people want to advise Winston, how many championships have they won? How many playoff games have they won? What gives them the authority other than old age?

Koetter, djax, Dotson, fitz, McIceCream NONE have done ANYTHING in the nfl. They have taught Winston the only thing they know — how to lose in the nfl.

Now, send me a guy like Kurt Warner or Marshall Faulk, who have won on every team they been on and it’s a different story.

The Glaziers took a champion heisman trophy winner and surrounded him with career losers namely Gerald McIceCream McCoy and hence we reap the results.

  27. BucfanBF Says:

That young Buc from the San Fran game last night looks better then Jameis has ever looked and it was his first start. What does that say about Jameis?
I have supported Jameis and was hoping that we finally have our QB, well we don’t. Lets see if we can trade this Nick kid from SF next offseason. Meanwhile I too would like to see what Ryan Griffin can do. Maybe we already have our QB on the roster and he is listed as our 3rd stringer.

  28. AlteredEgo Says:

Dewey….his genuine fascination with cockroach screwing speaks to his stunted emotional maturity and is a vision scared into my memory …one of his many flaws….I wish him the best in life after football

  29. Billy Bob Says:

Holly cow. that was the best review article I have ever read on Joe Bucs fan. hit the nail right on the head. I have always said that Jamies is a Pitching QB. Jamies needs a receiver that gives him a target. Jamies has trouble with hitting a receiver on the run.

  30. 1Gr8Buc Says:

One person who has side stepped a lot of criticism is bajakian. How do you go from being a QA coach at a floundering TN team to a QB coach? Jamies’ problems are solely on him without a doubt but at what point do we need to question his position coach?

Feel as the a majority of our coaches are in over their head and just costing through to collect a check. Glazers, PLEASE hire someone to handle football operations, you all do great at community events and ensuring that the team has every advantage in the weight room and practice facilities but we are lacking football knowledge from the top.

  31. Waterboy Says:

@Joe I heard yout point that Winston’s QB coach may have screwed up his mechanics during the 3 week suspension but my question is was he working with a different QB coach all offseason prior to the suspension?

Based on what we’ve seen i think this guy has a point that Winston’s preseason success may have had more to do with the competition he was playing against and other teams playing base defenses. Also 4 appearances in pre-season only equates to 1 full game. It’s hard for me to believe a guy would decline that much in just 3 weeks off. Now the number of reps he got in training camp may have had an impact but 3-4 yrs in the same system should make up for that.

  32. miken Says:

His mechanics are good sometimes and bad at other times. Dumb decision making seems to always be consistant.

  33. Jf Says:

Lol DB55 we know you’re Winston’s buddy. Way to blame McCoy for JaBoob

  34. stpetebucsfan Says:

Can someone here list ALL of JW’s coaches for me? Starting with Dilfer’s high school camp? I may be mistaken there but I thought Fameis worked with Dilfer and they became friends…perhaps I’m thinking of the wrong NFL guy but if JW’s first exposure to the NFL was Trent Dilfer that could explain a lot. OK snark font off.

Seriously how many QB gurus has JW worked with? He’s had PLENTY of coaching!!! Perhaps that’s even part of the problem…too much coaching. Here’s a thought though…maybe JW is just one of those 50% of draft picks who simply do not work out regardless of the coach.

  35. rob Says:

You have to hit the guy in the numbers to get YAC. JW seldom does that. Elite QB’s have 3 TD to 1 INT or better. JW is a bottom 12 QB and worst in the division. Time to move on.

  36. Ghingus Kwon Says:

Why, exactly, do people use hashtags to try and convey a point? Use your words people. Make proper sentences and use punctuation. The hashtags DO NOT make you look cool.

  37. GhostofSchiano Says:

Is there a qb coach working wit him now, right now to fix the foot work etc?

I honestly don’t know how many more chances he should get, or even IF he should get another chance.

I supported Winston, I defended Winston and have been let down by Winston.

  38. GhostofSchiano Says:

stpetebucsfan Says Chucky said after the game that people still want to be Raiders and he gets texts from players all over the league. Right!!!

I see a Spreewell Carlesimo incident in the next 14 months with Gruden and a player.

Right it down, you heard it here first.

  39. buddy Says:

Didn’t #KLUELESSKOETTER stab Lovie in the back and claim to TEAM GLAZER that he was only one who could coach Jameis??? So where is #KLUELESSKOETTER to blame in this whole thing??

  40. Hawk Says:

    buddy said,
“Didn’t #KLUELESSKOETTER stab Lovie in the back and claim to TEAM GLAZER that he was only one who could coach Jameis???”

I do not remember reading/hearing Koetter say any such thing. If you have a link to his quote, I would love to read it.

  41. JimmyJack Says:

#1offense don’t mean we are the best. We are far from it IMO.

Great offenses don’t have off games 25%+ of the time. Good offenses dont constantly let the team get down by multiple multiple scores and have no response. Good offenses can manifest a run game when it’s needed in certain situations.

Go blow this #1 offense straight out your rear because all I see is a offense that can’t win nothing……..I’ll admit the offense shows more ability with Fitz under C. But let’s not pretend like he is flawless. His biggest knock in his career is faceing off against heavy pass rush teams. His Dr Jeckle comes out under heavy duress and this is why he has been a career backup. As we have seen Fitz had very little chance to win us the Pitts or Bears game because of passrush.

Now this week Fitz gets another strong Dline to contend with. I don’t like our chances this week. Oh, wait our #1 one offense can just lean on their running game for a week……….If we number 1 I wanna see it. I haven’t seen it since we plummeted from 2-0.

  42. BringBucsBack Says:

    Carlson on target!
Didn’t #3 work heavily on his footwork this offseason?
    ghangus kwon, AMEN (re: #)

  43. firethecannons Says:

Hoping Jameis gets better over this season and gets more opportunity to play so we can trade his ass for higher pick–I cannot watch this kid year after year–I’m done! Every time he goes to throw I am fully expecting an interception.

Joe makes a good point about the free for all ball he threw in the endzone during the Tenn. game–tell tale sign that nothing has changed about this kid–at this point it does not matter why–he is not worth 20 million! We need to play Griff and consider trading for maybe Nick Foles or somebody solid for a year or two.

  44. miken Says:

@db55…the glazer surrounded #3 with more weapons than any other team in the nfl with maybe the exception of the rams.

  45. Lamarcus Says:

The way the Glazer’s ” invested” in JW I will get him ALL the coaching he needs.

  46. jjbucfan Says:

miken- O-line is suspect as hell, the weapons are there, the time still is not. There are 2 different offenses- the one they allow Fitz to run where he is in the shotgun most of the time and the Jameis under center offense. NOT using this as an excuse for his last game, that was solely on Jameis, but to say this is all on him is stupid and irresponsible. I’m cool with the benching, but the hatred for someone who loves this team and loves this community is downright frightening.

  47. jjbucfan Says:

miken- not saying you have hatred for Jameis- don’t take it that way- I understand where you are coming from, but the Rams have one of the best defenses in the league and wren’t afraid to go get another monster at that deadline.

  48. jjbucfan Says:

BTW- some dude earlier said we should go get that kid from last night, LOL. Are you f-ing kidding me. you will throw Jameis away after one game but you are willing to go sign some dude that played against the worst team in the NFL and looked good. Are you messing’ with us?

  49. D1 Says:

    JJ,

Putting JW under center is to protect him better. Fitz doesn’t need that extra layer of protection because his game is different than JW. If JW could do a couple things better then the coach has more options. Designed rollout is an occasional play definitely not something a smart coach adds in volume to the scheme. Frankly to suggest it is ridiculous.

The last thing, JW takes a shi. TON of snaps in the gun. I don’t know the status after Sundays game but prior JW took very few snaps uc . That’s possibly just because his pass attps are so high so the numbers may look skrewed. Not sure

  50. Onetrickpony Says:

    Ludicrous,
    BINGO !

  51. Hawk Says:

Absolutely correct, D1. Taking the snap under center is for the benefit of the QB. In the shotgun, a QB has to take his eyes off the defense for (approx) a full second, to make sure he gets the ball. During that time, a QB under center can see if a defender is starting to lean forward/backward, or if his eyes are looking in a direction that would help/hurt the play as called.

  52. jjbucfan Says:

D1- True but when you run play action (which we run), the QB has to turn his back on the defense, our O-line isn’t protecting well enough which is why when he turns around, he is immediately running for his life. I certainly didn’t suggest that we run designed rollouts all the time, but we could help him out by moving the pocket for him as he is good at throwing on the run. Again- not disputing what you are saying, but I see it a little different. No doubt he is leaning back on his throws and his footwork is garbage right now- but you don’t trade or cut someone for things that should be easily fixable with good coaching. BTW Jameis absolutely deserves to sit, I just hope Fitz has a little magic left because if he has to go back to JW3, it will not be pretty in Tampa. Dirk is in a winner take all scenario, IMO

  53. unbelievable Says:

#1 offense is based on yards….

    For the 100 millionth time:

WHO GIVES A FLYING F@cK ABOUT YARDS????

Yards are meaningless. All that matters is points. You must have more than your opponent. And we are NOT #1 in points scored, not even close.

  54. HeavyE Says:

I just Pray, that there are as many negative articles about Fitz, as they are about Winston, the kid is not starting or playing on Sunday, why do we still have to beat him up? let it go, you got what you wanted, and you are going to get what you deserve, just wait until Sunday afternoon….

  55. Hawk Says:

    @ jjbucfan
I think you’ll find that when a poor-average O-line rolls out, your holding calls go up. They are struggling to keep their guy in front of them when they have a small area to protect. If you increase the area they have to protect, the struggles will turn into penalties.
    @ unbelievable
You are right. Let’s just say an ‘overall’ top ten offense, as the Bucs are rated in the top ten for total yds/game, passing yds/game, total scoring, and # of TDs.
Those who can’t get excited about a Buccaneer team being having a top ten offense at mid season are either new fans or not fans.

  56. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    QB Ryan Finley (2019) !!

  57. Hawk Says:

Folks, there are several scenarios that could put Jameis back on the field this year… ‘starting’, no less. And I am sure that Koetter and Licht have discussed the ones I could think of, and maybe a few that I couldn’t. There is Waaaay too much time (and potential money) invested to wash their hands already. In fact, this ‘drama’ could easily draw out for another 13 months. $20 million next year is the kind of money that the Glazers find between the cushions on their sofa. *That* will not be a deterrent to keeping him another year. *If* the Bucs give up on Jameis, it’ll be because they do not believe he can be what they want. Period.

  58. BucsBandit Says:

    HAHAHAHAHAHA!

It’s hilarious to see those defending Jameis so hard in this thread.

Face the facts… Jameis SUCKS as an NFL QB. He just doesn’t have it. Limited throwing ability, bad footwork, and bad decision-making.

The Bucs will NEVER make the playoffs if Winston is the QB.

Time to cut Winston and MOVE ON.

  59. ATrain Says:

    Hey Heavy

You would rather see Winston Play then Bucs win
    Go watch Chess

You scream Fitz needs to get pulled for his bad play and Winston plus like CRAP
    And oh play him

You Winston lovers kill me Any excuse for WINSTON

AND EVEN SAPP CALLED HIM OUT

  60. ATrain Says:

NO EXCUSES FOR A 4th Year starting QB WHO WAS Number 1 pick

  61. BucsBandit Says:

HAWK – you obviously don’t know how the modern NFL works.

It *IS* all about the money and the SALARY CAP. The Bucs can’t afford to pay Winston $20,000,000+ a year if he’s not “the guy” which has proven not to be. That’s $20M that could be spread amongst other talent on the team.

Winston is as good as gone in Tampa. NO WAY the Glazers sign this kid to a $100M+ long-term extension.

And NO WAY do they keep Winston in 2019 — they can cut him and NONE of his $20M for 2019 is guaranteed.

Face the facts… WINSTON IS GONE.

  62. unbelievable Says:

    @Hawk- fair enough.

I am extremely excited about this offense BTW. We have playmakers at every position except running back (but Barber is good enough to get the yards we need). I just keep seeing accolades for #1 offense when that #1 ranking is based on yards, which at the end of the day don’t matter if you keep kicking (or missing) FGs or throwing INTs.

  63. Ed Says:

Jeff Carlson certainly has figured out why Jameis hasn’t improved since his college days. The mechanics and pocket awareness have not gotten good enough. Pocket awareness is that clock in a QB’s head that he knows when the rush is closing in, even if he can’t see it.

The great ones like Brady, Brees, Peyton and Rogers sense it and slide sideways getting just the extra time to find throwing lanes.

Jameis isn’t smooth and I would say he isn’t exceptionally coordinated so it could be that his mechanics can’t be cleaned up unless he does get that footwork straightened out.

  64. Hawk Says:

    @ BucsBandit
First of all, I am *not* defending Jameis in any way, shape, or form. He was advertised as being the best “NFL-ready QB since Luck”. He wasn’t just a 1st round pick, he was *THE* 1st pick of that year. He’s in his *4th* year, and I don’t see him being anything better than what he is right now. But there is a reason that *I* am not a HC or GM. With as many mistakes as they make, they are still more ‘football’ knowledgeable than I. The cap is a fluid thing. It goes up almost every year, and players can have their contracts restructured, or players can be waived/traded. I just don’t think that money will be the ‘major’ influence with their decision on Jameis.
    @ unbelievable
I agree that Barber is “good enough”, but only if the O-line is good enough to get him past the LoS. 🙂

  65. TheNorm Says:

Lmao DB55 may be the dumbest most idiotic person on this site. Lmao.

What an idio t. It’s a toss up between him and rod butt munch

  66. DalvinCookRules Says:

Carlson just said what I’ve been saying for years! Jameis is being molded into the type of QB that does NOT fit his unique physical attributes. It is more than just footwork, however, it is HOW he throws the ball…. the long, wind-up motions that go thru his shoulder really hinder him. He’s got to get the ball out QUICKLY, that means throwing thru the arm, the forearm, and the wrist… keep the shoulder from moving so much, just use back & legs to provide the power & support for the throw.

As far as Joe’s comment about the pre-season, the reason it was a valid statement is that if you compare what Winston did in prior preseasons, he was clearly better than he’s ever been before.

I stand by my original assessment that aside from being miscast in the Bucs offense & not getting the best tutelage, what is really hindering Winston this year is IN HIS HEAD. He can’t shake the whole offseason episode & he is really doubting himself deep down despite what he says publicly. I can read body language, and it is written all over him.

  67. BucsBandit Says:

    @ DalvinCookRules

    WRONG.

His massive turnovers EVERY. SINGLE. SEASON. can’t be blamed on what happened this year. He has been consistently terrible with turnovers… EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR.

Winston is DONE in Tampa. Time to move on.

  68. Pittsshore Says:

Ignorant people have zero poise when under pressure and that is exactly what Winston is…..ignorant. Ryan Leaf 2.0

  69. Craig Says:

Jameis has been the chosen one since he was six. He has never had to listen to a coach before because he had lost one game from high school through college.

Then the NFL hit him upside the head. He wasn’t benched because of a bad game. He was benched for being 0-10 for his last ten road games and 2-12 in his last fourteen starts.

He can throw all of the balls until someone across the line says Boo. Then he becomes Jameis again. He loses track of his footwork and that long baseball windup starts again.

Maybe finding a new team will wake him up. I have doubts. He will always drop back to his default setting when it come apart.

If the wheels really come off and Koetter goes away, a new coach will not pickup Jameis’s fifth year option.

DJax isn’t the problem, Jameis can’t hit him. He even figures out how to miss Evans half the time.

I would like to see Griffin get some game reps. Maybe he is our saving grace. There is also a lingering aftertaste of Mike Glennon. He was supposed to be good too.

  70. D-Rome Says:

That’s an interesting point, that perhaps this offense isn’t suited for Jay-Miss at all.

Good points. I look at the idea of moving the pocket or more shotgun as excellent ideas. The problem is that isn’t enough to remedy the issues you’re looking to.
I think the Offense needs , running game, more than a few plays. Complete rethink with a philosophical difference between where to attack the defense.
Different player skill sets would be required for 1-2 key positions. But basically I agree in the idea you propose, just differ on the extent of the job.

That and Winston is not going to benefit from reducing the field . He’s better in the middle, in the pocket.

I may appear to some as anti Winston. But that’s because to some it’s God vs Satan. No middle. Oddly enough middle of the pack is who Jamie’s has been since a rookie. Strange paradigm . The facts are looking negative from a financial position with roster considerations. So it’s a money matter or hope. Hope he changes is what I’d prefer to happen but 4yrs of JW at a discount isn’t enough to win, than how is paying premium for the same guy who only a season ago was costing 60% less.
