Koetter Talks About Cutting Calls That Play To A Jameis Winston Strength

October 26th, 2018

Dirk Koetter took you inside his offense-architect mind tonight as it relates to America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

Speaking on the Buccaneers Radio Network, Koetter responded to a fan caller who praised the work of Jameis outside the pocket and asked the head coach if he can design/call more plays to have Jameis throw on the run.

Koetter said he can but acknowledged that he’s been phasing out designed scrambles even though Jameis is studly in that area.

“I do think Jameis throws well on the run. And you know the main reason that you don’t design more of those is just because it’s a little bit tougher to protect him when you’re moving the pocket,” Koetter said. “Some of that depends on the team that you’re playing, like how do they defend bootleg type plays.

“A couple of years ago we did a fair amount of those. We didn’t do quite as many last year. We haven’t done as many this year. But they’re definitely still a part of our offense. And I think that just kind of depends on who we’re playing.

“But, you know, Coach Monken tells the guys all the time, ‘What’s our No. 1 pass play? Our No. 1 pass play is scramble.’ And, you know, over the course of a normal season you have a little over 1,000 offensive plays and it’s crazy but almost 10 percent, almost 100 plays in a normal season, end up being some form of a scramble play. So we work on it a lot, and I think it’ll continue to be a big part. Jameis has done a really good job in that area. You’re right.”

Joe’s not surprised Koetter and Monken are doing less movement of the pocket.

First, Jameis, per Koetter, is seeing the whole field at an elite level. Second, the Bucs now have weapons all over the field. When you move the pocket intentionally, you often shorten the field of opportunities.

Cmon joe!! If this was true he wouldn’t have thrown the pic in OT. And it does appear that rojo ran the wrong route and brought the LB into a spot Winston didn’t expect him to be. 4 years in he’s gotta be able to see that and react before the LB does.

For the record, I think Winston is our future and is the best QB we’ve ever had minus Young. He’s gotta sharpen up

  2. D the Bucs fan Says:

A bootleg with djax drag route can’t be called? Moving the pocket to keep the defense off balance. scheming your players open ie Chiefs, rams. ROJO or djax screen perhaps?

  3. LakeLand Says:

Jameis Winston strength is not throwing the deep ball

And that’s what they like to call

  4. LakeLand Says:

Matt Ryan is one of the most accurate deep ball passers I ever saw

But the Falcons call less of those plays than the Bucs
Because they get a ton of yards from those slants to Julio

  5. Seminole Bill Says:

Did I hear correctly that Casey Phillips was interviewing Coach Koetter. Aren’t both Bucs employees?

  6. Dre Says:

Lol joe would you please stop referring the word “elite” in the same breathe as jameis … he’s not seeing the field in elite level … of he did he wouldnt throw consistent interceptions… cmon man if the professional athletes who cover espn and nfl network read this stuff then behind the scenes they would laugh at the words you use when describing jameis

  7. Dre Says:

And they would laugh at koetter too if this is per koetter .. he’s in way over his head

  8. Dre Says:

I respect koetter for the situation he’s in … and I feel bad for the guy because he has to survive as a coach of the bucs with jameis … he’s stuck with him here in Tampa … if jameis respects koetter as much as he says he does he would stop making dumb bone headed mistakes because he’s going to get koetter fired … I really really do feel for koetter his job is tied to jameis

  9. Hawk Says:

    @ Dre
Don’t feel sorry for Coach Koetter. *He* tied himself to Jameis when the Glazers offered him the HC job. He could have said, “No thank you”, but he must have believed that Jameis still had a lot more ceiling. And he might. It’s taking a long time to get there, but that doesn’t mean he’s stopped learning/improving. *I* believe they are connected at the hip, along with the GM. If Winston doesn’t impress the Glazers, it’s likely that all three will be getting bus passes.

  10. Rod Munch Says:

Jameis literally lead the NFL in QBR outside of the pocket over the last two years, so of course Dirk see’s that and thinks we need to eliminate those plays as much as possible.

  11. Lamarcus Says:

Man JW is just so good man. Top 5 for sure

  12. LakeLand Says:

    What Dirk Koetter is saying,

He want Jameis in the pocket, with his feet planted
So he can throw the ball 50 yards upfield

  13. Nope Says:

[Nope. Using the Bucs’ head coach’s name as your handle doesn’t fly here, sorry. — Joe]

  14. Bird Says:

    Lamarcus

Yup top 5. The best so he tried to lose to the Browns game. 3 turnover and 2 sacks in OT But yah he put them in fg range . Have you seen how falcons are? A good qb wins that game They almost lost to giants who are top 5 pick

You commented on fitz turnovers. Jameis turnovers are not his fault

I will say he is do. He will blow up this game . 1 out of 4. Sometimes 3. So yah ..the I told you so will come out

100 mil. You says give it to him. Otherwise we have to suck again . What else can we do . Uhmmmm. Do you see a difference between the two. Fitz was fun. He has the hiccup

And Jameis is way more talented. No question . When is he gonna show it . Seriously When I am nervous I won’t trust my arm and run every play. Most qbs , they scramble and pot it

  15. Bird Says:

    No deep ball

Djax is too fast. I remember you posted on that before. It’s definitely not qb fault

  16. Bird Says:

    Rod munch

He is The Godfather of posting. I mean when he posts people are listening. I love it when he calls people darling and fruit and sugar

He has a right. He is better then us. He is butt munch

  17. PriMech54 Says:

It’s so funny to me that these people are so convinced that his deep ball sucks. Especially when you consider that for a good portion of his career he’s damn near dominated the league in air yards traveled per pass. Lol! Recency bias is a motherf***er. I seem to remember the guy hitting every single receiver he’s ever had in Tampa on a beautiful deep strike at one time or another, with the exception of Desean Jackson. He’s also lethal outside of the pocket and off of play-action; as in – consistently in the company of the likes of Aaron Rodgers. Talk all the sh!$ you want but the numbers prove it. It’s pretty obvious we don’t play to Winston’s strengths; if we did that, we’d have an offense built around play-action, pocket moving roll-outs and the classic Manning perimeter comeback concepts. He excels greatly at all of those things. If only we had a coaching staff that had any shred of creativity on a consistent basis. Mindblowing how people don’t see this.

I mean, you’d think asking him to dropback 62 times against a defense that’s forced 20 takeaways in 7 games because we can’t run the ball to maintain a 2 touchdown lead would have been the wake up call to these dunces (both on the sidelines and sitting on their couch), but alas, i’m not surprised. It’s all because his deep ball sucks and because he’s “dumb”. How ironic and hilarious!

  18. unbelievable Says:

    ^ nailed it !

  19. Gruden4President Says:

You 2 ^^need to stop drinking cause Jameis Winston has NEVER hi anyone accurately down the field except to the opposing defense

  20. PriMech54 Says:

^^^ LOL you’re out of your league, buddy. I can tell that both by the fact that your handle is ‘Gruden4president’ and also that you probably actually believe the drivel that you just typed. I’d waste a bunch of my time dismantling your 100% false assertion with a bulletin point style presentation and completely trash your credibility and faith in your own football knowledge – you and anyone else who claims that fairweathered rhetoric – but I don’t actually have any confidence that you’d actually read it. Thus, you’d still wander about the streets of Tampa Bay continuing to further contaminate the city with the league’s most embarrassing football IQ among fan bases. So, again, if you’re allergic to facts and statistics why waste my time?

  21. PriMech54 Says:

Also, the fact that you ONLY addressed the deep ball out of everything that I brought up is very telling of my entire point.

You really can’t make this stuff up. *sigh…*

  22. canadianbucsfan Says:

    @priMech54
Very well said sir. I do think koetter likes to use play action but it’s hard to sell it with how little we run the ball. I agree that Winston should be used on more roll outs aswell.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Seminole Bill Says
“Did I hear correctly that Casey Phillips was interviewing Coach Koetter. Aren’t both Bucs employees? ”

Casey Phillips takes questions from fans and gives Dirk the opportunity to answer them. It’s actually one of the best features around. She’s also very good with interviews.

She writes stories and provides audio/video content for the website. While she is an employee, she gets answers to questions no one else can.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Jameis Winston is fine with going deep…with everyone except Desean Jackson. For whatever reason, Jackson seems incapable of catching for him. Intentional? Who knows? Normally, I would say no, but when it becomes a two year pattern, there needs to be consideration.

Winston has no problem connecting deep to Evans, Godwin and OJ. That’s where the haters statements fall apart. It is only with Desean Jackson.

And, this just in…all QBs throw picks. Even the best of them. In fact, because of the new rules that have increased passing and decreased run plays, interceptions are up across the board in the NFL. More passes equal more opportunities for picks.

  25. passthebuc Says:

If JW is Americas QB, we have become a 3rd world country.

    and

JW does nothing at an elite level.

Your perspective is as funny as Mad Magazine.

  26. Bob in Valrico Says:

The main reason that Jameis is better at air yards than YAC,is that he throws at the receiver far more than he leads them IMO.
As for deep ball , here’s a chart that shows compares all QB’s in the league:

    http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?tabSeq=0&statisticCategory=RECEIVING&conference=null&season=2013&seasonType=REG&d-447263-s=RECEIVING_YARDS&d-447263-o=2&d-447263-n=1

  27. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

passthebuc “JW does nothing at an elite level”

    —-

Ridiculous commentary that shows very little football knowledge.
There is not a single individual in NFL player personnel that would agree with that statement.

  28. Bob in Valrico Says:

Bonzai I can’t agree with Jameis being able to hit all our receivers deep .He struggled to build chemistry with Mike Evans. It took two years to for them to get
some consistency. At the end of 2016 Jameis overthrew Evans at least 8 times on go routes. Its no wonder Licht went after DJAX in free agency. There were more than a few posters that thought Jameis could not overthrow DJAX ,that were proven wrong. To Jameis credit he has been very consistent with Goodwin. IMO the stats back up the fact that Jameis’s is most consistent under 25 yards.

  29. SteveK Says:

    Bob in Valrico,

    Agreee with you.

I want to see the deepball hitting receivers in stride. Less rifled, more launch angle. That will open up the run and everything underneath.

  30. NPRSageBoy Says:

Isn’t Jameis’ strength the turnover? If Koetter could cut those calls out, Bucd might have a chance at 4-12.

  31. Not there yet Says:

Is he saying Winston is safer in the pocket than scrambling? Errr running for his life. I’m sure the shoulder injury last year was all his fault nothing to do with bad protection at all

  32. Bob in Valrico Says:

Not exactly the chart I wanted to show. But if you select 2018 and QB’s from from player group it will get you there.

  33. jmarkbuc Says:

““But, you know, Coach Monken tells the guys all the time, ‘What’s our No. 1 pass play? Our No. 1 pass play is scramble.”

    REALLY?

  34. stpetebucsfan Says:

Wow…Jameis sees the field at an elite level? That’s why he throws it directly into the hands of LB’s and Safeties so frequently…because he sees them so well.
