Bombs Away
October 26th, 2018Want to know the Bucs offense in a nutshell?
Well, you can describe it as “heave-ho.” Only one team in the NFL throws fewer short passes than Tampa Bay. And that team gets more YAC from its receivers than the Bucs.
Per the good folks at NFL Films by way of BSPN NFL Matchup, the Bucs have thrown 89 short passes this season. They define short passes as five-yards or less. That team is Seattle, and only with one fewer.
And when the Bucs do throw these short passes, the YAC they get is paltry at 4.5 yards each short completion.
So this demonstrates that the Bucs are a bombs-away passing offense.
October 26th, 2018 at 2:15 pm
Given that stat, you should have a picture of Fitz instead of the Soiled Messiah, Joe.
October 26th, 2018 at 2:16 pm
More importantly, lowest in YARDS AFTER CATCH PER COMPLETION… another clear sign that Buc QBs are not accurate enough, even at short range.
October 26th, 2018 at 2:17 pm
Shocked that the Titans aren’t number 1 on this list.
Side note: call me when Djax attacks the ball like Hopkins.
October 26th, 2018 at 2:20 pm
A typical Dirk Koetter offense
The same offense that got him out of Atlanta
October 26th, 2018 at 2:23 pm
Anytime Joe puts a list like this on his website just look at the cluster of teams we are ranked near(Seahawks, cowboys, jets, and bills on this page).
Nearly every time our ranking is in line with teams that are bad os struggling…….It been this way for years. Not a coincidence.
October 26th, 2018 at 2:29 pm
They wanna build with offense and they don’t know how to rush the ball. The thing that has always pissed me off is that Dirk took over for a team that was above average, maybe top 10, in rushing.
He did it his way and just effed it all up. That’s how you set a franchise back right there people.
And you guys can sit here and talk about all these fancy passing yards til the cows come home and I will know it doesn’t matter. In this league you are going to get into games where you are going to have to run the ball. If you can’t you will lose and it’s just that simple……..And the only way to make a run without a rush attack would be sheer luck.
October 26th, 2018 at 2:31 pm
5 phases to the game including Special Teams. You can make a run if you suck at over half of the phases.
October 26th, 2018 at 2:33 pm
I’ve watched over 400 loses. Back in the day if we gave up 1 touchdown chances are we were going to lose. I don’t like losing but at least I get to cheer when we score. There have been a lot of quiet days in the past.
October 26th, 2018 at 2:35 pm
The Rams has 3 players with over 200 YAC
The Bucs best is O.J Howard 140 YAC
The Rams has 219 Rushing Attempts
The Rams has 219 Passing Attempts
The Bucs has 242 Passing Attempts
The Bucs has 143 Rushing Attempts
I’m just showing the difference between the two offenses
October 26th, 2018 at 2:38 pm
To JJ:
LOL! You just summed up every Buc fans hope for the last 10 years!
That by “Sheer Luck” the Bucs make the playoffs!
October 26th, 2018 at 2:39 pm
just win, good bad ugly don’t matter it is what it is and thats what it is
October 26th, 2018 at 2:40 pm
Leading receivers and not throwing behind them is what helps YAC and keeps WRs from getting killed.
But hey, as long as JW throws into the vicinity it’s ok right ?
Pffft
October 26th, 2018 at 2:40 pm
I think the YAC argument is dumb. Its not our game and never will be. Yard per attempt is far superior to meaningless yac and I think we are on top of the league with that number. Not sure about that I just know we were last year.
October 26th, 2018 at 2:43 pm
AK……. yep good ole sheer luck. Just like last week and the announcer was saying Dirk had a lot of guys to go for a 59yrd……I call Bull immediatly. You know Dirk had his fingers and toes crossed and was stroking his lucky rabbit foot and probably closed his eyes when the ball was kicked.
October 26th, 2018 at 2:44 pm
Guts***
October 26th, 2018 at 2:45 pm
YAC is important
Especially for a young QB like Jarred Golf
He don’t have to make low percentage throws
He can make high percentage throws
And the receiver can turn the short throw into a big gain
October 26th, 2018 at 2:46 pm
Doosh for what it’s worth I have noticed that Winston does throw behind his receivers sometimes by design.
October 26th, 2018 at 2:48 pm
Jarred Golf has pass for 2130 Yards
But the Rams has 991 YAC
Almost half of his passing yards are after the catch
October 26th, 2018 at 2:54 pm
The Rams has put Jarred Golf into a position to succeed as a QB
He has the top O-Line in the NFL
The leading rusher in the NFL, who is also a top RB receiver
October 26th, 2018 at 2:57 pm
Lakeland if you ask me we don’t need YAC(most of the time). Our passing game stands on it’s own……..But then sometimes we get into a physical game, like against Carolina, or the Packers last year….We can’t run our vertical offense if the QB is under duress every stinking drop back.
This is why I think Dirk is a garbage HC. It’s Dirk’s job to adjust the offense into quicker plays or misdirections…….But ole Dork just drops his QB into the pocket and asks him to start surveying the field every play. He plays right into their strentgh and keeps doing it for 4 quarters so they k ow it’s coming g……This is why we lost against the Steelers and why we will always lose to the Panthers…..among other teams.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:00 pm
Lakeland if you bring the Rams coach’s into Tampa I bet we are all talking about how good our Oline is. I bet we have a winning record too and aren’t eeking out home wins vs an inexperienced Browns team
October 26th, 2018 at 3:03 pm
#1 Offense in the league and you guys still find a way to hate. Unreal.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:04 pm
Short passing?! What a novel idea! Hit DJax in open space on short/intermediate routes?! Imagine if you did this against a zone! Covered WRs don’t stay covered forever.
Hey, but these guys are smarter than us right? Lets just keep lobbing it up, I’m talking 50-60 attempts per game 30-40 yards down field every time. What could possibly go wrong?!
October 26th, 2018 at 3:04 pm
Bottom line is I think this offense is f***ing overrated. They can’t even get a yard when they need it.
Everybody likes to talk about how good we will be if our defense is average and it’s all Bull. This absolute cieling for this offense is probably 1&done in a playoff situation……And that might be too generous.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:08 pm
First Down Tampa Bay……..yeah I will hate it. I hate s**t that’s overrated and this TB offense a freaking lie bro.
But I’d love to come back and tell you how wrong I was after the Carolina game. But that won’t happen bro guaranteed………You come back and tell me how “# 1” we are after that panther game.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:09 pm
Ryan Fitzpatrick is 1st in IAY (average intended yards)
Jameis Winston is tied for second
Jameis Winston has been at the top, every year since Koetter became HC
October 26th, 2018 at 3:14 pm
Wow Jimmy. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve read on this site maybe ever. And I reference dumb people daily on here.
Congrats man! You’re dumb.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:16 pm
We need precision bombing not let it rip hope it comes down near the target…and enough with the friendly fire several times each game
October 26th, 2018 at 3:18 pm
I don’t know why fans keep saying the Bucs has the TOP offense in the NFL
Maybe in yards, but not points
They were 5th in offensive yards in 2015
Thy were 10th in defensive yards allowed in 2015
If these stats are so important
Why did they FIRE Lovie?
October 26th, 2018 at 3:19 pm
You’re right Lakeland. It’s about points.
But this offense is NOT overrated. That’s seriously mind-blowingly dumb
October 26th, 2018 at 3:21 pm
I hope I’m dumb and I hope I’m wrong about the panther game…….But like I said it’s a guarantee. And guess what buddy? Overrated offenses don’t predictably go flat.
But don’t worry that game will come and pass and we will play the saints and falconls again so y’all can see some offense and get all giddy about being #1 again.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:26 pm
Why did Jeff Garcia come to mind when I read this?
October 26th, 2018 at 3:40 pm
Jimmyjack,
The Greenbay game was an OT loss. The Bucs Defense couldn’t stop the run and gave up the game winning score. Also, the Offense, JW, gave them 6 on a turn over. The Panthers, well it’s not one game but two, first one they shut the Offense down. The last one was a 5pt loss. That’s with a 103 kick return for a TD and the infamous Swaggy off sides on the 2. Add a couple red zone failures , a couple of sacks and dropped balls in the end zone and yet we almost won.
Point is, you picked the wrong games to make a point. It’s not the Offense design that allowed a 103yd TD. It’s not offensive scheme that made swaggy dense as a pine knot.
The Steelers game a pick 6 on a tipped ball is the deciding point swing.
Do I think we need to run the ball effectively, of course. But I have to look at the o line and RB combo and it’s not comprised of the caliber players as say the Rams or many other teams. That’s not on DK, that’s on Licht.
Fact is, DK is a GD genius for getting a one dimensional offense to the best offense in the league. McVay has been successful sure, He has a great defense, great o line the best RB, a GM and Owner who signs the best free agent talent (instead of sifting through the bargin bin seeking “value”) the best defensive coordinator in the league and you really want to compare all of those riches to what DK has?
Yeah, on second thought ……It’s dork……..let’s keep it simple for the short bus , window licker crowd of buc bucket drooling spazzes…
October 26th, 2018 at 3:40 pm
The Bucs scored 48 against the Saints in the season opener
But they have averaged 23.8 PPG since
They haven’t scored 30 points in a game since
October 26th, 2018 at 3:41 pm
Buccernutter…….We got three losses. In each one our offense could have played better. And not just play better but they were downright awful in one entire game and flat out choked for the whole half of another.
Yeah half our schedule bro. Get outta here #1. I’ll take the number #6 offense so long as they are consistent and we already know that will be good enough to beat your precious #1 in half of the games.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:46 pm
Lakeland they’re 16th in points with a bye week included
October 26th, 2018 at 3:49 pm
Jaywill
They are 8th in PPG
But during the last 5 games, they are a lot lower
October 26th, 2018 at 3:49 pm
D1……I picked the Panthers because their defensive line physical dominates our Oline. They play in our pocket all day long. Same thing with the Packer game from what I remember.
Your chances of beating a team that is dominating you up front is pretty close to zero. I could say that maybe our defense could even thing out give us a good chance e at victory but we don’t actually have the kind of defense you can say something like that about.
We will lose the the Panthers that’s a guarantee.
This week we win 30-20.
GOO BUCS!!!!
October 26th, 2018 at 3:53 pm
And just to be clear it pains me to say the Bucs will lose. I would love nothing more then to see this team go out there and punch a panther right in his lip. But we too soft as a team bro and softness is not factored into these rating which is why we overrated.
October 26th, 2018 at 3:54 pm
“90% of those short passes this year was attempted during the 1st 2 games with Monken as playcaller
KLUELESS KOETTER DOESNT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE SHORT PASSING ATTACK AND GETTING THE BALL OUT WITH QUICK SLANTS, CROSSES OR LEGAL PICK/ RUB ROUTES
October 26th, 2018 at 3:59 pm
But hey Lakeland…..it just goes to show you. You read a lot of people say the yardage stats don’t matter because only points do…….but that doesn’t mean that PPG is a rule-all stat.
Just look at the Eagles game for a perfect example. Philly was on intensive care at halftime. They were basically dead………. Our offenses job was not the score a bunch of points in the second half it was to eat up clock and run plays. PPG didn’t matter TOP and Playcount was so much more important at that time ….of course TO was too.
It just goes to show you that in the NFL you have to be able to win in a bunch of different ways. Joe’s “heave ho” offense don’t work.
October 26th, 2018 at 4:00 pm
Saints game was different. We had to keep scoring or we would of lost.
October 26th, 2018 at 4:01 pm
Anyone who thinks this is due to the QB – wtf passes are you imagining happen that are under 5 yards or less?
Those passes typically = screens and RB check downs. You are throwing to a stationary non moving on probably most of the passes under 5 yards. Or it’s a quick out RB/WR/TE…
Our QBs have been fine in terms of accuracy on screens / dumps to RBs underneath. NOt sure what in the f*ck you guys are even watching sometimes. We simply don’t run a lot of underneath concepts for easy completions and YAC. We are a vertical down the field air raid type offense.
October 26th, 2018 at 4:01 pm
Bucs are the only team in the NFL to have 5 players with 20+ receptions. That’s spreading the ball around.
October 26th, 2018 at 4:12 pm
Hey but that’s cool if you think Dirk’s a genious. Yeah sure thing, McVay got oodles of talent to work with…….Was that’s what everybody was saying when he took over for Jeaff Fisher? Nah, I betcha everybody’s been raving about how well he transformed that team.
October 26th, 2018 at 4:17 pm
Wake me up when your genious Dirk accomplishs the one task he was hired to do.
October 26th, 2018 at 4:39 pm
Alright Joe so what’s the news man? I been checking your website all week and saw nothing about our who our starting LBs will be. Maybe I missed the story please link.
But come on bro. It’s the Friday before the game and I have no idea what the name is of our third LB. Tampa reporting has done did me wrong as a Buc fan!!!
GO Glanton
GOO BUCS!!!!
October 26th, 2018 at 5:33 pm
The new NFL rule on Illegal contact & and other acts down field gives the Bucs monster receiving Corp more advantage to sustain deep ball % throws.
JW has to be Smart ,.Throw the ball away ,…the % deep completions will be there.
secondary making mistakes = penalties which keep us going.
screen plays and draws could catch Cinci napping,
They adjust. …more open space as linebackers have to respect the delay plays.
October 26th, 2018 at 6:01 pm
Dirk Koetter was doing the same thing in Atlanta
He dropped 56 on the Bucs
Then they lost their next 5 games
Scoring 89 points in those 5 games
Finish the season at 23.8 PPG
Matt Ryan threw 632 passes
Their Super Bowl season, Ryan threw 534 passes
Last season he threw 529 passes
October 26th, 2018 at 6:03 pm
“No need to throw the ball away. With the new short passing attack every qb is completeing 70%.
The short passing scheme is replacing the run game. Over 35 pass attempts is the norm
Starting Running backs used to get 25 carries per game. Those days are over
Its a space game. Put your playmaker isolated against a linebacker/safety and away from traffic
JW3 needs a new playcaller and far away from Klueless. Its a damn shame , Klueless took the playcalling duties away from Monk exactly when JW started playing
Its time for JW and the Bucs to split
As JWs Uhaul driver, Kobe Faker has started the ignition
*Uhaul not Uber

JimmyJack Says: “This is why I think Dirk is a garbage HC. It’s Dirk’s job to adjust the offense into quicker plays or misdirections…….But ole Dork just drops his QB into the pocket and asks him to start surveying the field every play”
Great point, a Koetter offense is one that does not deviate much from its game plan, when the other teams defense is pounding the hell out of the quarterback, thats when draw plays and screens are there. I watched Matt Ryan in the MNF game, on TV I could see the Giants dialing up a big time blitz, the heat was coming, what did Ryan do, he audibled, put Julio Jones in motion and he ran a quick slant where the blitz came from, Ryan hits him perfectly in stride and takes a hit from the blitzer. Perfect adjustment.
When the Bucs had a great defense, Sapp and company would be chasing after Favre, this was in the Mike Holgren era, Favre would audible and drop back look one way, pump fake and toss a little screen to Dorsey Levens and that back would gain 75 yards a game vs Bucs on screens.
My point is you have a playbook for a reason, if you don’t ever use it to attack the other teams defense, you are a lousy coach! Dirk’s tendencies with his play calling are starting to become easier and easier for opponents to defend wth every passing game.
October 26th, 2018 at 6:54 pm
Technically, the average can be the mode, median or mean. Just one or two screens or dump offs in the flat that go for 60-70 yards will really skew the average. If the long screen to Humphreys that went like 70 yards wasn’t called back for a hold, our average would swell to 5.3 from 4.5.
Another thing holding us back is that our running backs aren’t good receivers. They don’t adjust to the ball, don’t catch it on their front foot and have too many drops.
Jimmy referenced Goff. He has an all-pro left tackle–the best in the league post Joe Thomas and what I think is the best offensive line. When Prescott had a great oline, he was great. When Carr had a great offensive line, he was great. Now, both teams are close to giving upon them. Luck had a couple very good years, then the Colts stopped investing in their oline. They haven’t been good since.
The pass pro hasn’t been terrible, but just like you judge strikers on their best play and central defenders on their worst play, you measure receivers on their best plays and olinemen on their worst. We’ve had too many turnstile-like breakdowns, the overtime sacks and the swipe fumble being prima facie evidence.
October 26th, 2018 at 6:55 pm
Lakeland said what I said earlier in the thread, apologies.
October 26th, 2018 at 6:56 pm
Hey Ed do you remember what happened the last time we played the Panthers? People can tell you about the embarrassing 108 TD but perhaps the biggest factor in that game was the numbers we put up in the redzone…..which was 0-6 or something disgraceful.
And you wanna know why we were o-fer? IMO one play sums it up. That play would be a simple false stat by the right side of our line on a great down and distance play.
You may not say that play ‘changed’ the game but it’s hard to argue it definef it.
Dotson(or Phampile?) didn’t just have a minor miscue……That play was a critical moment. That guy dodnt jump offsides because he was playing Buc Ball. He jumped because he saw a Panther coming and he knew he was not going to win his battle. We are a soft football team. We are soft to our core. We are so soft it infects the kicker.
October 26th, 2018 at 7:01 pm
TBH the Rams don’t impress me much. At least not yet.
They will be in the hunt for sure but their offense was a joke last off-season. I love what their defense did and they have a ton of potential but they have a ton to prove, just like the Eagles did at this time last year.
October 26th, 2018 at 7:03 pm
Post-season*†*****……….Sorry I’m a Buc fan. The term off-season is far more common then saying ost-seaeon
October 26th, 2018 at 7:09 pm
And why aren’t nobody told me who the third LB is? WTF I know there’s people reading the comments. Somebody’s gotta know who he is.
Come on Buc fan weaksauce stew stickcarriers
October 26th, 2018 at 7:16 pm
JimmyJack
They need to get these guys in space
Ronald Jones is best in space
DJax is best in space
O.J Howard, Hump also
October 26th, 2018 at 7:26 pm
Lakeland the only guy I don’t agree about is D-Jax. At least not with Winston. Jackson is the polar opposite of the type of receiver Winston thrives with.
It is a mismatch on our own team. It is a combo that will not ever work. It’s been a collasal waste of money that a smart GM/HC would have spent elsewhere.
October 26th, 2018 at 7:30 pm
I saw R.J. make a 15 yarder with his speed when given space last week. It’s be nice to see it again.
October 26th, 2018 at 9:24 pm
The Bucs run a variation of the 1970s Air Coryell offense, which isn’t a bad thing, they’re really the only people still running it and it gets a ton of yards. But like the run-and-shoot, the issue is finishing in the red zone, and without a power running component you struggle a bit. But the Bucs are the top offense in football still – so if they had a defense that isn’t giving up 31 points a game they should be A-OK. But you can’t play a rookie QB every week.
October 27th, 2018 at 2:34 am

October 27th, 2018 at 7:34 am
You people amaze me. Not so long ago, all you did is complain that the Bucs threw passes too short and didn’t get first downs as a result.
NEWSFLASH:
Throwing for less yards is NOT a good thing!
Only the haters would try to making throwing short of the first down marker an argument against Jameis!
October 27th, 2018 at 7:51 am
It’s a sad day when our punter has better accuracy than our QB
October 27th, 2018 at 2:14 pm
Bonzai,
Exactly!!!!!!
If you’re completing 75% of your passes and those passes on avg travel 10yds in the air, yeah only an absolute football savant could see the necessity of throwing 2-3yds. Dirk is just plain ole stupid……
October 27th, 2018 at 3:36 pm
Kobe,
If you only had a clue! It’s not Air Coryell first and foremost. Yeah I see “The experts” around here saying that, but it’s laughable . Dirks system is as easily called a spread. It’s not accurate but it’s just as if not much more accurate than Air Coryell.
But hey you think DK is calling plays so………that’s all we need to know about that….
