So what do these numbers represent?
They are 475, 412, 413, 483, 417 and 305.
No, they are not area codes that represent recent road conquests for Joe. Those are the numbers of yards the Bucs defense has given up each game this season.
Notice the last number? No, nothing to do with Miami. But it is a sunny number that may represent a new day in Tampa Bay.
As we all know, a week ago today the Bucs ran off Mike Smith. For reasons not quite clear, his defenses were atrocious. It got to the point that Bucs coach Dirk Koetter couldn’t tolerate it any longer without putting his own job on the line and he had to say goodbye to his old friend “Smitty.”
In fact yesterday, the Bucs won a game largely based on defense. It’s been a couple of years since Joe has been able to type that with a straight face.
And Koetter knew his new defense, now under Mark Duffner, saved his bacon and probably a lot of people’s hind end at One Buc Palace, players, coaches and suits alike.
“Thank God our defense did [come to play] because our defense played their tails off,” Koetter said. “Really, [Sunday] is all about our defense. The job they did on third down, of getting five sacks, and overcoming the loss of [linebacker] Kwon [Alexander] at halftime, right before the half there. [I’m] very proud of the defense.
“If we could ever put four quarters together on both sides, we’ll be a tough team to beat. Today we got a win, [and] that’s hard to get when you’re minus three in turnovers.”
Just think: The defense pitched a shutout through the first half. Just hours ago, such a thought would have been a ridiculous concept.
Joe doffs his cap to Duffner. He and his defense had a helluva game. Prior to the game, Joe had mentioned to whoever would listen that if the defense had just played average in the first five weeks, the Bucs would have been 4-1.
Yesterday the Bucs needed the defense to play better than average to bail out their sloppy play. And the defense came through, shocking as it was given what we were growing accustomed to this season.
Bad Jameis: As Joe has noted a couple of times already, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, had a mixed bag yesterday. He had decent numbers – and also had his weekly two picks (a ghastly one in overtime that should have cost the Bucs the game – but, the Browns). Jameis also led the Bucs in rushing (!) and took a horrible sack that nearly took the Bucs out of field goal range in overtime if not for the heroics of kicker Chandler Catanzaro.
Speaking after the game, Bucs coach Dirk Koetter was visibly angry at Jameis for that sack, in which he stood in the pocket for seven seconds. That’s holding onto the ball way too long and begging for trouble.
In fact, Koetter said it was worse than it looked with the naked eye and he was going to launch an investigation as to what the hell was going on.
“I don’t know what happened,” Koetter said of the sack. “We didn’t run the play that Monk [offensive coordinator Todd Monken] sent in. I’m not sure exactly what happened, but there’s just no excuse for that. You absolutely cannot – we were already in field goal range. We cannot take a sack there.
“I didn’t have time to get to the bottom of what exactly happened. Was it some kind of confusion or was he looking for something else? But, the play that Monk sent in was not the play that we ran.”
This Jameis, he is never boring, that’s for sure. And it’s one reason Joe enjoys watching him so much.
Loser football: Speaking of angry, Joe just couldn’t believe what he was seeing late in regulation.
With the game tied, the Bucs were marching as Jameis is wont to do during the fourth quarter. The Bucs got the ball down to the Browns-24. There was 45 seconds left. Koetter had two timeouts in his wallet.
Instead of trying to run a few more plays, maybe get a touchdown but certainly give Catanzaro a better chance at a field goal (he had already missed an extra point – again), Koetter instructed Jameis to back up and take a knee to place the ball closer to the hashmark!
That simply blew Joe’s mind!
What is it about the Bucs (or Koetter?) that they can move the ball up and down the field but the closer they get to the goal line the dumber they get? Penalties, turnovers… a loser mentality hijacks their hard drives.
Not knowing better and just on face value, such a stunt screams Koetter doesn’t trust Jameis. Joe’s pretty sure that’s not accurate but on the surface that’s exactly what it looks like.
Fortunate: Man, you should have seen how relieved Bucs tight end O.J. Howard was after the game.
Howard is going to win a lot of games for the Bucs. He may already have. The guy is a complete weapon at tight end and at times, the dude is simply cannot be defended. Howard going up against a linebacker or a safety is simply an “M&Mer” – a mismatch.
But Howard is human. He proved it yesterday. On a key third down with three yards to go near midfield, Jameis tossed the ball to his left targeting Howard. It was a short pass and Jameis sort of put some air under it. The ball went right through Howard’s hands.
The Bucs had to punt and the Browns marched down the field and had first-and-goal. That is when the Bucs defense had the stand so far for the season, stonewalling Baker Mayfield and the Browns.
Howard was off the hook!
Kwon Alexander’s knee: This really stinks. Per Jenna Laine of ESPN, it appears Bucs middle linebacker Kwon Alexander tore the ACL in his left knee and is done for 2018. It happened right before halftime. Joe wonders if it may be worse than that?
In a sign of what his teammates really think of him, and maybe a sign that Alexander’s injury might be something worse, when Kwon first went down it was a scary scene. Players from both teams were on their knees, both offensive and defensive players. Some had their heads in their hands. You don’t often see that.
And last night social media was full of well-wishes from Kwon’s teammates. Even Miko Grimes offered up thoughts for Kwon on Instagram.
Players get hurt every week in the NFL. It’s the life they have chosen. Joe can’t remember the last time a Bucs player got hurt (severely) and so many of the player’s teammates took to social media.
Says a lot about Kwon to Joe.

Never boring in many cases ends up meaning a Receiver having to make a bone crushing spectacular play, a desperation throw, a fumble or an interception. Rodgers isn’t boring either, but that word can have vastly different definitions.

D played really good. We could have put it away early and never should have been close. Too many turnovers! Blows my mind Browns let Nassib walk, guy played great. Sucks about kwon, i wonder what happens with his contract now??

Winston played decent in the first half but was off badly in the second half…..defense played well enough to win this game…..dirk still has poor clock management issues entering year3….

Bucs shouldnt pay this mixed bag QB over 20 million per year. That’s just insane. Fitz was benched for performing much better than JW. Just ask Djax. Bucs won yesterday despite JW trying to lose the game. After 4 years we know he’s never gonna be accurate, never going to improve on his decision making and will continue with the turnovers. Bucs should draft the West Virginia QB, Will Grier.

Jameis Winston is going to do Jameis Winston things forever and always. He will look great, maybe real off 11 completions in a row or something and BOOM, he will infuriate you, he will make you cry and curse at the TV. This is what he is, and you know what – we are going to have to f’ing live with it. Meanwhile you have a rookie in KC that doesn’t throw pics or make mistakes. Oh hey btw, you know who has given up more yards than the Bucs defense? The Chiefs. You know what the only difference is between the Chiefs and the Bucs? Better coaching and better quarterback.

hey milken, we got cincinnatti (4-3} followed by carolina (4-2) then the redskins(4-2}before we get a break and face the giants (1-5} then the 49ers {1-6} followed by three hard ones carolina (4-2} saints {5-1} ravens (4-2} almost beat the saints yesterday then the cowboys (3-4} and finish with the falcons who already beat us, hate to say it brother but by the time we get to the giants, we could very well be 3-6 let’s for arguments sake say we stand at 5-6 after the 49ers we still have to go against, newton, breese, and the ravens top notch defense 5-9 at that point with all probability then the cowboys at jerryworld always tough, finish against matty ice maybe 6-10, lucky to reach 7-9 in my opinion

Anthony Becht said yesterday’s defense was very misleading as the Brown’s had a lot of self-imploding mistakes that put them in bad down and distances. The second half, when the Brown’s cut back o9n mistakes, our defense was the same old defense.
The Bucs just aren’t a very good football team. Don’t expect more than 6-7 wins max.

Can we continue the theme of accountably, yes we did win the game, but our special teams were badly outplayed again. Or return game stinks, punt coverage stinks, kicker is sporadic at best. Let’s keep gutting the guys that aren’t getting it done.

If the Bucs didn’t play in the NFC South. They could get away with the mental mistakes. To compete in the NFC South, you have to play mistake free, smart football.

Buc fan since 76, been through the ups “few” and downs “many.” Not a hater of any of our beloved players, but it is time to work the phones before the trade deadline in an attempt to stockpile draft picks to fill the many holes on this team. First up D. Jackson. Great player but could bring a valuable draft pick. Next, GMC. Dude is near the end of his career, trade him. Kwon would have been on this list if not for his injury. He is not worth 10 mil per season. Cam Brate is a luxury as well. I’m still on the fence with JW3, but a 1st round pick would get my attention as I believe Ryan Griffith is more than capable of leading this team.

Would you IF YOUR job hinged on Jameis’ performances? You just said in the paragraph above that one that Jameis DIDN”T run the play Monken had called. YGBSM … with the game on the line, your QB decides to WING IT? Not the first time that’s happened as you well know. And taking sacks when the games on the line after spending 7 seconds meandering around behind the LOS? If no one’s open you at least throw the ball away to keep from being sacked; every HS QB knows how to do that. Just can’t figure out why Koetter doesn’t trust Jameis? Ya right.

the first two games this season was an illusion, the bucs simply are not a balanced team, there defense is depleted and in transition, they have no running game non existent, a QB who is struggling with ball placement, the deep ball and turnovers, offensive line so- so could be better, kicker inconsistent pulled one out his hat yesterday, injuries have hurt this club, but injuries happen to all NFL franchises the difference is depth, and our depth sux the drop off in talent is really evident, sorry these are indisputable facts, finally the receiving corps, tight ends are stacked, and as talented as any in the league if not better, to bad not enough to get it done, i do not see koetter getting much more rope, he’s already climbed the gallows, when will the glazers pull the switch?

Sure the goal line stand was great and overall play was improved vs a not so great Cleveland offense – but does the Defense really deserve praise when the Bucs had a 14 point lead in the 4th Quarter yet wound up having to play an overtime period?

In his post-game press conference Jay-Miss stated, “I gotta take care of the football” and “bottom line, I just gotta get better.”
Um, this is four years of “trying to get better”. Here’s the thing: The Bucs are going to be in a similar situation as the Bengals were in a few years ago. Jay-Miss Winston is our Andy Dalton. He does just enough to look good, and every once in a while he’ll flash, but he’ll never be better than what he is and he’ll never be in the upper eschelon of quarterbacks, just like Andy Dalton. Dalton supporters sound like Jay-Miss supporters when they say “Look at the numbers” but you have to look past that.
Many (probably most) Bengals fans have buyers remorse when it comes to the Bengals giving Dalton the big contract. Dalton will never lead that team anywhere. If the Bucs end up giving Jay-Miss the big contract this team will be in mediocrity over the next ten years. Throughout my post history on JFB I’ve been a staunch Winston supporter, hoping and waiting to see if he’ll take that next step. He’s not going to. This is who he is. Being the best Bucs QB in franchise history is not a great accomplishment. The season is still early, but I hope the Bucs ownership are considering moving away from Jay-Miss if the Bucs end up with a losing record. If they do, Dirk and Jason will deserve to be fired, and I can bet you the new group will not want Jay-Miss.

jameis is a sick young man in a way…he really really loves football…in an obsessive type manor…he gets really crazy mentally…in his head – and can’t take a breather – just look at his eyes at times they look insanely crazy while playing – not even keeled in any way…he has like OCD or ADD or something…he’s got a boatload of talent, but he gets in these mental zones and can’t get out of them…he can be real good…or real bad…when he’s zoning you cant reach him…and he doesn’t see things on the field – also when things began unravelling in the 4th quarter, jameis clearly got that look of a deer in headlights…he was completely shot and couldn’t hit a target at that point…he was mentally defeated at that point, and fitz should have been put in to pull out the win…the jameis scenario is a crazy one, but i don’t want to waste to much time detailing it…he’s a little bit sick in the head…but he is a good dude, a good teammate and means well…he has issues that are deeply mental that effect his physical play…like with djax – that relationship on the field is shot – jameis is resigned to the fact that he can’t hit him long…it’s all mental…these things happen

there was a point late in the game you just knew there was no bounce back for him…late in the game he was mentally shot he wore it on his face and rendered himself almost useless – i’m really surprised koetter didn’t see or sense this – and put in fitzie to march down the field at that point

maybe the bucs can hire a psychiatrist type qb coach to actually coach him mentally on the sidelines so he remains “good fucused” during games…shouldn’t be too pricey…hire a mofo to keep jameis even keeled and mentally crisp and focused like brees, rodgers and brady remain on gamedays…jameis has got a hell of a lot of tools…
but honestly he was kinda scrambling around like a madman yesterday too – too many wild risky scrambles – there are just so many of those you can do before the defense clocks you – but it was the adrenalin – those were adrenalin infused scrambles…

also the most experienced bucs receivers are well aware that jameis leads you right into defenders to get walloped after the catch…djax is totally aware and super careful of this…me13 is very protective of himself and his field whereabouts after a catch – thus his low yac…godwin is gonna get his head taken off if he doesn’t wise up…and brate gets hammered often, but is a big dude, so he tries to shake it off…jameis’ throws often lead you right into defensive hits…luckily these aren’t the days of ronnie lott or tatum

I never complain about a win.
Cleveland has played tough all year, I think that was their fourth overtime game or something.
Of course there never should have been an overtime but for that missed kick.
Naturally the Jameis haters come out. If he has a good game and bucs lose hes roasted. If he is a bit off and we win he gets roasted.
I will point out his last two games at home he threw strikes to set up the wins. That pass to DJackson was a thing of beauty. And, his scrambling and running was a big key to the win also. Got that td and picked up a lot of key third downs.
Go bucs, were right back in it. Very entertaining team. Each game, except the bears, right down to the end. A little better defensively as the young players develop, and we can be there at the end.

ok in double summation…don’t get it all twisted up…this is not a throw jameis away type rant…you need to keep jameis…he needs to mature and this won’t happen as much…
meaning, he needs to actually get like more bored with football…not love it so much…where it’s more like a ho-hum day at work…he’s just too excited and crazy about the sport…let some boredom and age kick in and he will get more even keeled…right now he’s just a young gun in a football frenzy…
in laymans terms, no pun intended, he’s like a pre-mature ejaculator…lol…once he get’s the issue fixed he’ll be slingin’ balls with the best of ’em 🙂

That bucs defense is not improved, its just like the joes article stating the run game has improved because of a poor run defense the bucs played in ATL, the browns offense is meh led by a rookie qb, the bengals and AJ green will be unstoppable and then joe mixon a guy the bucs should have grabbed will have a field day, it will be cold and ugly in cincy and that will be the bucs game

Jameis was terrible in OT until he wasn’t. I’m not a Jaboo apologist, but we should’ve never been there in the 1st place. He marched this team right into a makeable game-winning FG!
Also, he didn’t miss an extra point (which again significantly impacted the score/outcome), didn’t fumble like Brate (the strip sack is as much on the OT as QB), didn’t get a beautiful ball ripped out of his hands like DJax, or miss a pass right through his hands like Howard.
Yes, his INT on the deep seam to Howard was unfortunate (b/c Howard was WIDE OPEN behind the MLB) and the OT INT and sack was inexcusable…but there’s plenty of blame to go around…like not having a running game to keep him from dropping back 60+ times.
Lots of encouraging stuff from a decimated D. Nice to catch a more than few breaks from the zebras.

I mean honestly was that Uber driver your sister? You’ve been whining like a sissy girl this entire season. Yes guys like drew brees is a hall of gamer but he did have a lot of bad games too. Many years they went 7-9 because of bad defense and yes turnovers, he has thrown many int’s to our team. Get a grip and stop hating, so many of you are angry and hating because of the salary this young man is about to get, even sorry Blake Bortles who just got bench is making big money. Suck it up and stop embarrassing yourself.
I’m not saying Winston is a franchise qb because he is inconsistent but we are much better off now than we were with Mike Glennon, josh mccown days. That’s not the best statement when drafting a guy first overall but I think his issue is impatience and misplaced arrogance which I hate but until a better option comes along which ain’t Fitz I’ll deal rather than crying on posts 20 times a day

Of course Koetter doesn’t trust Winston. His lack of ability to see the play develop causes him give up turnovers. He gets too excited and makes bad decisions. He tries too hard, and wants t please everyone. (common ADHD symptoms), and when he does, bad things happen because he can’t clear his mind and focus. He wants the ticker tape parade when he single-handedly wins the game. An unfortunate affliction for any quarterback to have.

My question is why is no one talking about how horrible Humphries was yesterday as a punt returner. He cause us to start two, not one TWO drives at our own 1 yard line. In addition to that he had several others that he let bounce and we lost precious yards on. You see people look at the QB and say he should play perfect, but they ignore the dropped TD by DJax in the endzone or the drop by OJ that would have extended a drive that would have put the game away or the fumble by Brate, one of the two times he touched the ball, or the worst game of the season by Donovan Smith or the human turnstile Beneoch or the worst kicker in the league (that’s saying a lot) and lastly one of the worst punt returner performances in the history of the league and the moron coach who kept sending him out there.

The jury is in! Winston’s “fatal flaw” is his decision making. He has demonstrated this consistently over his NFL career so far. He lacks something in his internal makeup, something intangible, and that something is also called judgment.
Over his college and professional careers he has consistently demonstrated bad judgment off the field as well. We have been waiting for him to grow up for four years now.
The question is what are his quarterbacks coach and/or his head coach doing for him as a professional quarterback? Someone needs to “jump down his throat”. Someone needs to come down hard on him. He should no longer be coddled. The time for the tentative handling of his ego is over.
This is extremely important for the near future of the Buccaneers. It will prove to be extremely important for Jameis’ pro career as well. And yes it has a bearing on the tenures of Koetter and Licht as well!

Continual mental meltdown. ..Including Coaches.
It’s still Around today,…..We saw it yesterday !
NFL players are not tough like back in the day.

So far a very revealing season:
Mike Smith lasted too long as DC.
Monken can do some play calling.
FitzMagic showed us the potential of this offense.
Winston will never show us the full potential of this offense.
Winston can get us to the playoffs only if he stops overriding Monken’s plays. SMH The dude has what it takes but sometimes I think he is letting the “America’s Quarterback” by Joe go to his head.
Its all Joe’s fault.
4th Year Quarterback Joe not America’s Quarterback.
3-3 is a good spot to be in. Go Bucs!!!

Franchise (I did not say HOF) QB who will lead us to victory. Has Not cost a game yet, but has won some for us (leading rusher, rushing TD, 2 game winning drives against the Browns, we just missed the kick) and put us in a position to win a dozen more in the 4th quarter. Don’t like it? Buy the team or go root for some other team. He IS THE BUCS FRANCHISE QB. Team Game. Go Bucs!
