History Made Sunday
October 22nd, 2018As horrible as that game was yesterday — neither team deserved to win it was so sloppy — few who left the Den of Depression giddy with the win likely knew it was a record-setting day.
First, per Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com, the 59-yard game-winning field goal Chandler Catanzaro kicked was the longest overtime field goal in NFL history.
And as Joe wrote yesterday, the Bucs — with no running game to speak of (unless you count the team-leading 55 yards from America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston) found a way to rack up 34 first downs including 31 in regulation. That’s a franchise record. The previous record was 30 reached four times.
Gee, how exactly did a team move the ball enough with a rotten running attack to shatter a franchise record? It couldn’t have been because those first downs came from the quarterback so many people want to run out of town, could it?

The only history made Sunday that anyone should care about was Geraldine McBooty wasn’t on the field, the coaching staff wasn’t forced to put him in the game, and the defense got more than one stop when it mattered. Not a coincidence there. The D-Line played with some juice. McBooty has to go.

I agree the game yesterday was horrible……And who deserved ii more, well that is debatable. The fact is we won…….And is hard to win on this league, and we as a franchise don´t have a history of winning, so why don´t we smile, enjoy and get some postive vibes!!!!! We won despite turnovers, despite not having even a decent running game, but a W is what it counts……So lets stop with the If´s, and start being positive!! Go Bucs!!!

What a weird game. I had band practice unfortunately and only saw the 4th quarter/OT but my biggest take away is the D looking visibly MUCH better. We didn’t give up anything easy. I didn’t see crazy busted overages. And we were getting pressure/sacks.
The Browns aren’t a bad team. Just young. One of the more talented defenses we’ve faced. Game should have never gone to OT. Why can’t we just make kicks lol

i think its tough when there is a better QB sitting on the bench. That sack he took at the end of the game was enough for me. The ints were bad, the sack was gut wrenching.

As much as I want to defend McCoy, the dude is on skates in goal line/short yardage situations. There’s no way we make that goal line stand with him in the game:

Was that including the six free bee’s from the Browns or no? I’m pretty sure there were a couple three and outs where the Browns committed multiple penalties to keep our drives alive.
October 22nd, 2018 at 10:55 am
yes we had more losses in that game after our 23-9 lead than i ever expected….
but in the end we ate a W…

the truth is the bucs are a really crazy team and it’s always going to be this way…
and any true bucs fan knows this and loves them anyway…
just relish in the madness…
no other team is like this…
it all started with garo yepremian…
we wore incredibly bright orange unis with a “rainbow happy” pirate on the helmet…
we’ve won games 3-0 in monsoons
think about it…
steve young and bo jackson said “fugg that team”…
think about it…
we are the bucs…we eat W’s…and we will shine again!

The game seemed like set up to end in a tie from the beginning. Then the miracle kick wiped some frowns off of faces.
October 22nd, 2018 at 11:08 am
Great kick. redeemed himself.
Jameis and co. moved the ball up and down the field, and his passing set up every score we had.
No touchdown passes on the scorecard, but he put a great pass in Jackson’s hands in the end zone and that throw to Howard was down to the one inch line. Plus he ran in for a score and threw the strike that set up the field goal on third and forever. And made great throws in regulation on the last drive before the botched field goal.
But lets get rid of the guy for sure. Pure idiocy.

where’s @realist?…..is he still stuck in smitty’s U-HAUL?
#NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!

Joe, as strange as that game was yesterday, and as frustrating as the Bucs are, you’ve got to stop calling Raymond James the ‘Den of Depression’. It may be justified on some level, but as a long time fan, it makes me depressed just reading it. We have to see our stadium as a positive place where opponents don’t want to come! Think Arrowhead. For all the bad seasons the Chiefs have had, giving that stadium a nickname would never happen. While JoeBucsFan could never be blamed for Buc weirdness and misery (that would be ridiculous), you do wield some media power here. Don’t sugarcoat it, but let’s drop that nickname!

Yes, let’s focus on first downs cuz that was what eventually won the game? C’mon man. In spite of 31 first downs, we needed the kicker to bail us out. No, the first downs couldn’t have been partly because of the crappy field position we found ourselves in many times. Let’s just heap praise on Jameis because he throws, runs, catches, plays defense, runs kickoffs, and fields punts.
I always get reminded that I’m reading a fan blog penned by fans. The same fans that worry about decorum at pressers so tough questions get buried only for blog articles. Sarah Huckabee Sanders gets tougher questions than our gridiron coaches. Decorum can be kept with professional but tough questions that the fanbase wants answers to.
For example, why is Noah Spence a healthy scratch? Is it for an undisclosed injury that’s not being reported, is it because coaches can’t seem to coach a healthy body to be used on a defense with injuries, or is it because somebody made a huge mistake evaluating him? Carl Nassib is making a bigger impact than Noah Spence in only a little over a month with a new team and new scheme. Something tells me Noah Spence is not what the Bucs thought he was.

If you kick a 59 yarder to win a game in OT, people can’t be too mad at you. Props on the redemption shot.
Janikowski used to have the record with a 57 yarder.

That was a gutsy call by Koetter
October 22nd, 2018 at 11:38 am
What a joke that is.
October 22nd, 2018 at 11:46 am
Winston’s mentality is all wrong that’s his issue, winning that game allowed him to think the way he played was ok and his press conference was unwatchable. Dude may not ever grow up or understand situational awareness. Koetter is a coward of a play calling coach and why the kicker is so important he doesn’t believe in touchdowns or putting a game out of reach, can’t call the end of the game the way he did and expect people to believe he trusts Winston more than kickers. We’ll end up middle of the pack offense with that mentality.
Coach and quarterback don’t mesh well
October 22nd, 2018 at 11:47 am
Joe, how many first downs came from Brown’s penalties?
October 22nd, 2018 at 11:48 am
Weren’t 10 of those 31 first downs during regulation because of penalties?
October 22nd, 2018 at 11:49 am
Yet Koetter went for it on fourth and two from the 50, and called a pass.
October 22nd, 2018 at 11:50 am
or does it matter?
October 22nd, 2018 at 12:11 pm
Did the 62 dropbacks include Jameis’ rushing and sacks? Cuz I know that Jameis had 52 passing attempts not 62.
October 22nd, 2018 at 1:34 pm
Many people here think the penalties by the other team are gifts. Sometimes, that’s the case, a late hit, a stupid taunting penalty.
Some, though, you earn. A team with a great QB and receivers that run great routes and are just plain hard to cover will earn a lot more holding and illegal contact penalties than a team with a check down Charlie at QB and mediocre/slow receivers. The great QBs are really, really good at getting defenses to jump offside, and they don’t try do it all the time. They wait until they really need an offside call on 3rd and 3/4. And olinemen rarely hold guys when they don’t need to, most of the time they do it when they get beat by the rusher. So, those offensive holding penalties are a direct result of us getting better pressure. We got five sacks, but missed about 5 more. And you can add the holding penalties to that. There were also at least a couple that we declined because there was a loss on the play.
So, we earned a lot of those penalties. It’s not just luck; it’s a function of a better rush and better downfield coverage.
And Baker Mayfield is playing better than any of the four rookie starters. I wouldn’t have gambled a first overall on a guy that short, and Darnold may turn out to be a better player long term, but right now Mayfield is playing really well, and the other three aren’t.
We were a couple of dropped third down passes and a missed chip shot field goal from winning a game where the turnovers were 4-0. When have we even been competitive in a game where we lost the turnover battle 4-0?

Was excited when the last field goal made a left turn (from the tv’s vantage point) and curled just inside the goalpost to win the game. With that said, both teams played abhorridly. They both deserved a loss. Terrible concentration and fundamentals. And the bucs did this with posibly 5 All Pros in their receiving corps. With All that in the receiving positions, and the opponents secondary backing up when the ball is snapped, why is it so hard to get a running game going? Amazing !
