The Buccaneers’ defense is still waiting for the full power of the Super Bowl ruboff, aka the positive effects of signing three Super Bowl winners in the offseason.
Vinny Curry and Beau Allen (Eagles), and Jason Pierre-Paul (Giants), whatever you think of how they have played, the Bucs defense is still terrible. So collectively they have not had the desired impact yet.
Bucs fans were told that adding Super Bowl winners should be a difference-maker. But Joe never inhaled that sweet smoke.
The 2014 additions in the trenches of Clinton McDonald (Seahawks), Evan Smith (Packers) and Logan Mankins (Patriots) didn’t bring that kind of juice that season, so Joe couldn’t buy in this spring. (Yes, Joe knows Mankins doesn’t have a Super Bowl ring).
However, general manager Jason Licht said one key attribute of these Super Bowl winners is that they will grind and stay consistent and focused when things inevitably go wrong in a season. So because of that, Joe will have a sharp eye on Allen against the Browns on Sunday.
Allen returned last Sunday after a foot injury sidelined him for two games, both Bucs losses. Just before the game, Licht hopped on the Buccaneers Radio Network and called Allen “a freakish athlete that recovers fast.”
Well, now Allen has the rust off and might be called upon for a load of snaps if Gerald McCoy can’t return from a calf injury. Joe suspects Allen will move to McCoy’s position so Vita Vea can stay more focused in his role.
Allen, 26, was used to playing less than half a game with the Eagles. He could be up to 75 percent of the snap on Sunday against a ground-and-pound offense like the Browns’.
It’s time for Allen to step up.

Jason Licht propoganda arm in full effect did like the sage column saying this is a must win but as fans tough to watch eagles, rams, nfc south and teams like cleveland flip it around and the yucs still have ugly unis and poor personnel moves

The Bucs are only paying over a million per tackle. He is on pace. Still a better deal than McCoy.

I’m with the Sage on this, I think JPP should be moved around. Move him to DT once in a while and try Noah Spence on the edge next to JPP. That would be a disrupter plus with JPP’s relentless motor it would likely force the offenses to compensate with double teams giving Spence an even better chance to get to the QB. I’m not positively sold that GMC is our best 3 tech. Move GMC to DE once in a while. With his quick get off he could very well be a beast on the outside. I hope Coach Duffner and B. Buckner start thinking outside the box.

The best way to fool offensive game planning against your D is to be unpredictable. Moving the defensive line around can cause problems on the O-line’s scripted protection assignments. Why make it easy on them, I say keep them constantly second guessing themselves.

Now that Drag-em-down McCry is out, look for the D line to gel and start reaching their potential. But the secondary is putrid on their best days so it’s going to take a lot to beat any team.
