Two Changes To The Bucs’ Injury Report

October 18th, 2018

Stars aligning

Not a lot of good news when it comes to today’s Buccaneers injury report.

Gerald McCoy (calf) and Vinny Curry (ankle) haven’t practiced this week, and starting safety Jordan Whitehead (hamstring) didn’t practice today after being limited in practice yesterday.

On the upside, rookie cornerback Carlton Davis (back) was upgraded to full participation in today’s session at One Buc Palace.

Joe is down about the Whitehead setback. As for McCoy and Curry, it sure looks like there will be a Noah Spence sighting on Sunday.

A loss of McCoy would mean more interior duty for Will Gholston, which combined with the Curry injury likely would mean Spence is activated for only the third time this season.

    ______

You can’t pressure the coaches for having crappy players, pressure the GM.

Plus the defensive coordinator was already fired

Dirk Koetter is doing what he was hired to do, make the Tampa Bay offense the best it’s ever been

  6. Tony Says:

You ever notice that the areas we address in the off season always seem to be the biggest let downs?

We should have been addressing getting a good defensive coordinator

  9. NMBucsFan Says:

Hey Joe, does keeping a guy inactive on game day make it less likely he’ll get drug tested after the game?

  10. Mike Johnson Says:

Decimated by injuroes or not..WE want no Excuses. WIN..by any means necessary. If not we will BOO. Sick and tired of losin. Plug in the replacements like all the other teams do. They win with substitutes, Why can’t we. Ruck up Bucs!!

dirk was hired to make the team better not just the offense…..

the pressure is right where it belongs….on him…..

with that said, if dirk or duff cant get the defense right, glazers will clean house….

  13. Reach87 Says:

@mike Johnson, agree. We should expect to wi the game even with the injuries. Every team has them. This is where good coaching comes in. I think we win it. Go Bucs!

  14. morgan1672 Says:

    when is Unrein coming back?

  15. Defense Rules Says:

@Mike Johnson … “Plug in the replacements like all the other teams do. They win with substitutes, Why can’t we.” Mike, you’re starting to sound like that bucboy character … “No more excuses: If we don’t win I’m gonna BOO” (your caps, not mine). Our starting lineup (what we started this season with after training camp ended) should’ve been able to win some games I thought, but then the injury bug caught up with them (many of the PROJECTED starters & key replacements like Allen, Unrein, Vea, VHIII, Grimes, Conte, Beckwith. Now they’ve got McCoy, Curry & Ryan Smith injured (and questionable for Sunday). And to make matters worse, many of those original PROJECTED starters & key replacements aren’t really playing all that well. I’m ‘sick and tired of losin’ too Mike, but until we get better players I don’t see it turning around anytime soon.

  16. Defense Rules Says:

@813bucboi … ” if dirk or duff cant get the defense right, glazers will clean house.” Wow, FINALLY we agree on something bucboi. But at this point, a good house-cleaning at season’s end is inevitable. We’ve all walked this road before.

  17. Dave Says:

Idiot McCoy haters. They do nothing but prove how ignorant they are to actual football. Anyway, I digress.
I want to talk about Spence. This guy is supposed to be a speed demon off the edge so why not have him in there againt today’s pass happy offenses and give him a damn chance?

  18. Not there yet Says:

Licht better hope he wasn’t the only guy wanting vea over Derwin James, if the glazers are looking at production of drafted rookies that may be it for him if it comes to extending him long term. I only say that because run defense was good without vea pass rush is no better with him and our secondary is the worst in the league. If Isaiah Johnson has to play meaningful snaps again you can bet no scheme would be able to cover for a talentless safety and he’ll get roasted again

  19. Not there yet Says:

    @Dave

Idiot McCoy haters. No one hates Geraldine they just don’t understand why people gush over a guy who puts up zero stats consistently, this guy is the reason people talk about how many sacks a guy had over the course of a few years because if you looked at him from a year to year basis he would look extremely average. Bottom line everyone says he’s a good player, idiots are the ones who keep calling him elite

  20. Ed Says:

How come Bucs defensive linemen and even offensive linemen are always injured? I seem to remember Warren Sapp, Simeon Rice, Brad Culpepper, Marcus Jones and so many other Buc linemen in the 90’s and early 2000’s never had all of the injuries this current group have.

What has changed so much that these guys are always hurt? Barber and Lynch always suited up, Brooks, Quarles, those guys never got hurt much.

  23. tnew Says:

Hopefully Spence can keep his pace for hitting the QB on 25% of the snaps he plays.

  24. Buc4evr Says:

I really don’t care, this defense is always hurting, seems like they are all soft and injury prone. Remember the days when the Bucs played the 3-4 with great success and the D line was always double teamed and they never had injuries like this team. Maybe this defense is more athletically gifted, but they are not football players with true grit. Soft and weak minded players the whole lot.

  25. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Buc4evr

    No I don’t remember the Bucs playing a 3-4

  26. aceinthehole Says:

Back in the late 70s-early 80s, the Bucs were one of the first teams to play the 3-4. It was considered a “college defense” back then.

  27. Buc4evr Says:

Wally Chambers, Crowder, Lee Roy Selmon. Almost went to SB that year…1979. Our LB’s were headhunters: Dewey Selmon, Richard Batman Wood, Cecil the diesel, and Lewis. They would be thrown out of the game today. Lol.

  28. lambchop Says:

For anyone complaining about Jason Licht’s draft mistakes, have you forgotten Jon Gruden’s drafts? I think Jason Licht’s draft mistakes get highlighted because unfortunately a lot have been 2nd rounders. But, he has had some good draft picks as well. So, you can’t throw the baby with the bath water. I hate the reaches we have made in the 2nd round picks, but you can’t get rid of Jason Licht and forget that everyone LOVED the Noah Spence pick after his rookie year.

I am hoping he either fixes what set him back this year, if it’s a weight issue, or learn to play Buckner’s style of DL. Either way, I think coaching has to get part of the blame. His bum shoulder was the risk we took in a promising DE. But, other than Seferian-Jenkins, Roberto Aguayo, and possibly MJ Stewart, I’m ok with his drafts. Nobody hits on every draft pick.

And with regards to Vita Vea, DTs can take time to blossom and the dude has seriously rag dolled OL like nobody’s business. Heck, I saw him hulk smash Alex Mack, the C for the Falcons. Watch the game and you’ll see it. He plays angry and I’m excited about that. You can’t keep trolling him because of Derwin James. Derwin had a bad injury in college and his last year he played less than his pre-injury self. I’m not sure if that’s why they passed on him, but it is what it is. Let’s move on. Nobody in their right mind is trolling the OJ pick because of Dalvin Cook anymore because Dalvin keeps getting hurt. And OJ has blossomed.

  29. lambchop Says:

Also, for those calling Vita Vea fat and slow, you guys are stupid. He missed a huge part of pre-season, he had a really fast combine 40-yard dash for a “fat” guy, and he is just shaking off the rust and getting acclimated to the defensive scheme live in game. This guy looks like the alter ego we all wanted to see in GMC. Mean and angry when he plays.

  30. Dave Says:

    Not there yet

You’re right about the elite part with McCoy but He is much better than average though. He is an all pro. People just need to look around at other teams and look at the DTs and listen to the other players and coaches. Instead we have a bunch of armchair quarterbacks sitting at home thinking they can watch one team over and over and over and actually evaluate the guy. There are less than five DTs better than him since he came into the league.

As for your comments on GM Licht- You are dead wrong there. The last three years he has done one of the better jobs in all of football. Now it’s up to the coaches to get the talent they are amassing and the depth they are amassing to play.

  31. stvcl Says:

McCoy has 55 DT’s that have out preformed him so far this season. Let that sink in. He is a lot less than average. I haven’t seen anything this year (4 tackles 6 assists 1.5 sacks ranking him 105th in defensive lineman) that justifies paying him $12,500,000. for this season. When he’s finally gone, I won’t miss him.

  32. orlbucfan Says:

The bloviating hot air from the self-appointed “experts” on here is getting beyond tiresome. Licht has done a very good job as a GM. The signed player record since he was hired backs it up. As far Vea goes, he’s a rookie starting his 2nd game. Give it a rest, yahoos. Let him play. This will be interesting to see how the defense plays with the hamstring (Smith) gone.

  33. BigRig Says:

Time to sign someone off the street instead of playing a 2nd round pick. Simeon Rice still looking for a job??
