Dirk Koetter Says Brent Grimes Is 100 Percent

October 12th, 2018

It’s been a weird 12 days on the Brent Grimes front.

He was taken out of the Bears blowout but other veteran defensive players were not.

Many fans assumed Grimes was benched, assuming it was for poor play. Joe didn’t buy that theory. But for some reason, Dirk Koetter and Mike Smith have not said publicly that Grimes absolutely wasn’t benched whatsoever.

And that sent local sports radio and fans on social media into a barrage of chatter about Grimes getting benched and playing poorly.

NFL superwife Miko Grimes, spouse of the Bucs’ top cornerback, didn’t seem pleased about Grimes leaving the game on Instagram shortly after the Bears game. But she left a lot open to interpretation, so Joe’s not going to assume anything.

This evening on the Buccaneers Radio Network, Koetter was asked about Grimes but had a very short answer in a show that was filled with long-winded answers by the head coach. However, Koetter delivered good news.

“Yeah, he’s 100 percent,” Koetter said of Grimes, “and I think Brent has had his best week of practice so far.”

So there you have it. Grimes is considered full-go by the coaching staff and he’s been impressing since the Bucs returned to work. Falcons QB Matt Ryan was known for avoiding throwing toward Grimes in practice when the two were teammates in Atlanta.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens Sunday.

    Damn he looks old here.

  2. LakeLand Says:

    Who will he cover?

    Calvin Ridley
    Mohamed Sanu
    Julio Jones

  3. Tbbucs3 Says:

I’m going to throw up if I see Cornerbacks play a 15 yard cushion this Sunday. Will Mike Smith learn how to press?

  4. Deborah Hall Says:

John if you are talking about Brent, he is 35 and I am looking at him now and he looks like a person that eats healthy and has a million allergies. Show me a picture of you and let me pass judgement 🤷‍♀️

  5. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs don’t have to stop the Falcons offense. The Falcons OC Steve Sarkisian will stop the Falcons offense. The guy is the WORST OC in the NFL…hands down.

  6. Season Is Over Says:

Just blitz like Steelers did or you will lose. It is quite simple. Whether or not Dirk “We were done before Halloween” Koetter wants to win remains to be seen.

  7. unbelievable Says:

Brent represents the past, not the future.

Put him in the slot or on the bench. Let’s see what the young guys can do.

(Plus him being on the bench doesn’t force out entire defense into soft zone 20 yard cushions the entire time)

… Now that I said all that, he’ll probably play lights out and grab 2 INTs this Sunday (Hey, a guy can hope…)

  8. Pickgrin Says:

There’s always gonna be at least some people saying negative crap online about someone who is in the spotlight Deborah. I know that momma bear instinct kicks in and its hard to resist responding to people who say mean or unjustifiable things about your son. But honestly – its almost always best to just let it go.

Brent hasn’t contributed much yet this year because of his injury and didn’t look up to par of what we all expect to see from him in the Bears game – so that’s going to increase the criticism some throw towards him unfortunately.

Hopefully Brent can stay healthy and string together some good games this season. If its his last – hopefully he can leave the game with good feelings about his final efforts in the NFL and help this team win more games than it loses in 2018.

Regardless of how this season plays out for Brent – he has had an unbelievably good, productive and lucrative NFL career for an undrafted player from a small school. You have every right to be super proud of what your son has accomplished in his football career Ms Hall.

  9. ClwJB Says:

My issue with him this year isnt his struggling with a groin injury, it’s his constant avoidance of ANY contact whatsoever – he purposely dodges tackles, is not aggressive on the edge, and allows runs to escape that should not.

If he is gonna collect millions, at least have the nads to try and tackle someone

  10. Dewey Selmon Says:

Save your breath Deborah, there are some who have nothing better to do than troll and argue. And by responding to him 2 other people have responded to you and now we are in left field instead of talking about fact the Grimes looks old, has a million allergies, missed a million tackles in 2 games, and Miko wears the pants in the family.

  11. Defense Rules Says:

All due respect to Brent Grimes, him playing off like he does forces others (Safeties especially?) to change also. It impacts the whole Secondary it appears. We drafted 3 young guys who were pretty decent in college at press & man-to-man. Evans plays pretty much the same way, and Ryan Smith looks like he does better when he’s not trying to give so much cushion.

Play the young guys Smitty & let her rip. Hopefully Buckner turns the dogs loose, and Duffner gets his LBs playing a lot more aggressively. No more finesse crap … SHOCK AND AWE. Let the Dirty Birds know right from the git-go that they’re in a dogfight.

  12. Architek Says:

    Bucs being the Bucs.

  13. Pistol Pete Says:

I have a sinking feeling that nothing has changed, and we are giving up 50 Sunday.
I am in Atlanta, and the radio guys won’t leave Julio alone about no TD’s.
He is probably at a breaking point and may use Sunday to silence all of these radio idiots.
    Pistol

  14. Mike Johnson Says:

Yet further evidence Dirk K. is beyonf his realm. Grimes was..once upon a time a bery good player. He spat out his last force with the Bucs over the last couple of years, HE’S DONE!!! Stick a GD fork in’em People!!! I calls it like it is..Buc fans.
He’s old, injured and only a shell of his former self. Watch him go down again in Injury. Father time is a Mother…. He;s hangin on collectin that salary til seasons end. He’s going fishin..with Dirk and Smitty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep watchin.

  15. Trench War Says:

    Pistol Pete

That’s just what we need, a motivated Julio Jones. That dude has made his career off Buc DB’s. We know they will be moving him all over the field to find those perfect match-ups but my bet is they try to pick on starter Carlton Davis from the go. Starter Justin Evans will probably get Sanu in the slot, and starter veteran Brent Grimes will draw Calvin Ridley.

  16. BucEmUp Says:

Lakeland….your right, and with that said they will still top the league in yards and points this week.

    GUESS WHY???!!!!!!

  17. Lamarcus Says:

    Come on Joe

Let’s get real. You have in past exposed (with film) LOAFERS in likes of Sean Jones and VH3 but somehow the most serial LOAFER of them all Grimes keep getting feel good stories.

Joe I have mad respect for you so this isn’t a attack but come on you know see it. You see the loading and falling on the ground slipping everywhere

  18. Rod Munch Says:

I never thought he was benched for play, he was pulled because he’s 59 years old and if a game is out of hand you don’t want to play him since he’s injury prone at this point of his career. He’s not been very good this year, but he’s still the best corner on the team, so you want him around for when it matters.

  19. Darin Says:

Guys why u standing up for Deborah? She seems to not need it by her statement. She pretty much put him in his place. Ive yet to see him post his picture.

Trust Joe, if he thought Grimes was mailing it in, he would write about it. Grimes is a pro’s pro. Seen him work way too hard to remotely think he’s throwing in the towel.

  21. Joseph Mamma Says:

He looks like if Spike Lee, Woody Allen, and Sammy Davis Jr. had a baby.

  22. BrianBucs Says:

    OLD

  23. DBS Says:

I don’t think old is the problem. Now trying to play the game the old way? Smitty has not learned and Grimes has not either.

  24. ATLBuc Says:

Have you guys ever heard of Darrell Green. HE played at a high level until he was about 42 years old

  25. Ndog Says:

Dude if you watch the games it really isn’t that hard. He doesn’t play hard, doesn’t like contact, and doesn’t really want to play. I mean we make this harder than it is. Here I will make this easy.

    Kwon- over aggressive
    Grimes – not interested
McCoy – quick but can’t finish
LVD – Plays hard but can’t cover anyone
    MJ Stewart -aggressive but slow
Davis – long good with his hand, decent speed will be a good not great player
Evans – boom or bust player
Whitehead – limited exposure but so far plays downhill probably prone to play action
JPP – great effort good pass rusher but can be neutralized when really needed
Curry – average DE nothing more
Vea – crazy strong great motor limited movement and get off

There done what we see is what they are period! Tell the truth Joe, Grimes couldn’t care or less about this team that is crystal clear. You saw him work hard to get paid but he is played to play not work out.

  26. BUC IT Says:

We just need to shake off last game…. this is a new game. Our defense was humiliated and have had 2 weeks to think about it. This game is very likely to be a shoot out but I think our defense will go in there and make some key stops after the chicago massacre.

  27. Buc1987 Says:

    100% Toast.

  28. Rod Munch Says:

ATLBuc – You ever heard of exception of the rule?

Ndog – Amazing insight, must be a God given gift, or you’re just another dullard who repeats the same thing they hear some dullard on the radio say – or perhaps you dullards all just think the same. In any case it’s incredibly boring to hear people say people aren’t playing hard. Yawn. There’s literally like 3 people in the NFL that have the physical abilities to get to that level and stay there without playing hard. Anywho feel free to share whatever other boring insights we’ve heard 8-billion times.

  29. John Says:

Deborah Hall, i dont get paid millions of dollars to get touchdowns thrown on me everyweek. Matter of fact i have the same amount of interceptions as grimes so where is my check? I say he looks old you say he eats healthy and has alergies. Are you his nutritionist?? His pediatrician? I say hes 35 and its time for him to be cut and go enjoy his retirement. Paying him any longer doesnt make sense. Get the new blood in here and let them get experience.

  30. lambchop Says:

Grimes didn’t cover Julio much at all last time they played. I don’t understand how Mike Smith doesn’t tweak the scheme to shut down their best weapon with Brent Grimes. I think his awful play in Chicago can be attributed to rust and still having a nagging groin pull. He will be back to doing his thing unless Mike Smith has anything to say about it. Mike Smith is like the ultimate Trojan Horse for opposing teams.

  31. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Deborah Hall is his moms lol. That’s funny if that’s her.

Brent has been real solid and an ageless wonder until this season. I don’t know if it’s health or what but by the way the coaches act, I feel like somethings got to be going on behind the scenes.

I feel like as a pro athlete, a competitor, and as a man, Brent is not going to just give up. Something else is going on. Maybe he just knows this defense is booty. I don’t know but we could really use his best ball down the stretch here.
    GO BUCS!!!

  33. Ndog Says:

No Rod I just watch the games, pretty simple really.

  34. Hodad Says:

Ndog, I see the same thing. Vea will be a good player for the Bucs, but expecting him to play the three tech in a 4-3 defense is unrealistic. He’s a natural nose tackle who can hold the point of attack, but doesn’t have the get off to constantly rush the passer. To bad we don’t play a 3-4 scheme. Maybe next year with new coaching.

  35. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Julio with zero TDs this year, sounds like a familiar scenario like in chi town w ol mitch not throwing tds…. the bucs defense will make you smile julio & dont worry calvin there will be plenty left for you

  36. BucNole Says:

I have always kinda suspected Grimes style of play impacted the rest of the defense. He is NOT a move corner which makes it easy for opposing OCs to take him out of the game as far as moving their best targets around. His off coverage style isnt a good match for the QBs and offenses in our division – hell the entire league.
It seems like even an average OC can game plan around our defense pretty good. If im setting up a game plan I move Julio around and NOT on Grimes side of the ball. That is showing some respect but also just common sense to create a fav matchup. ie not rocket science

  37. Reach87 Says:

There it is. Bucs suck. Let’s leave and move to New Orleans. On second thought….go Brent! Go team! Go Bucs!

  38. TOM Says:

IMO the reason they begged Grimes to sign that lucrative contract because Licht realized (sadly to say) was there best CB. Oh! What a tangle web they weave.

  39. Anonymous Says:

All I know is for years consistently Brent has gotten 3-5 interceptions a year. Key word is consistently. What other Buc can say that. Pray the guy is inspired to play the rest of the season. I like to get our new young CB’s some playing time, but Brent has to put it together…we need him right now. I like the way our safety Justin Evans has been playing,..but hopefully some other young DBs step up. I would love to see that. I’m sure Jason does too.
