Todd Monken Talks Self-Scouting, Run Game

So after all that bye-week time to dissect the Buccaneers offense, what did offensive coordinator come away with?
Joe asked Todd Monken just that this morning at One Buc Palace.
He concluded there are two big improvement themes: running the football and protecting the football, with an honorable mention going to better scheming and not coughing up the rock.
JoeBucsFan.com: Coach, after all that self-scouting through the bye, what really stood out to you about the offense.
Todd Monken: Gotta run the ball more and be better at it. I mean, that’s probably as much as anything. We’re capable of being explosive, but obviously, we can’t turn the ball over. You’re going have to have so many more explosives to make up for those turnovers. So those were probably the two biggest things. And once we got in the red zone, how do we do it better. Some of it is scheme and some of it is, ‘Hey, when we get those opportunities, we gotta take advantage of it and not turn it over.’
On a different question, Monken noted that play-action has to be a bigger part of the Bucs offense and the running game is critical to stifle defenses, “so they just can’t tee off.”
That last sentence is exactly why Joe is confident the Bucs will have a very renewed focus on the run game Sunday in Atlanta. They want to keep Jameis upright and allow him to work within a balanced offense, at least in his first start back.
And there’s also the matter of the Falcons allowing 4.9 yards per carry this season. This certainly is the week to get the run game healthy.

So self scouting didn’t involve how mediocre the o line was the last two games? No comment on that from Monken huh too bad, guess we believe Marpet is going to somehow become a monster and probowler now that he’s been paid even though it’s supposed to work the other way around

Brady would put up 70 points a game and 700 passing yards a game with these guys. The 150 rushing yards would be chump change.
If it aint broke don’t fix it. They went south when they stopped passing early and tried to establish a run game.
This is a pass 1st offense. Thats why it looked like koetter was calling plays again. SMH

He just knows his line will get eaten up by blitzes. Especially on the right side. So they are going to try to run left away from them. Maybe bubble screens to the right mixed in with the deep stuff. But if their linebackers aren’t creeping up or the safety, the middle to deep stuff will go away. Like fangio said, take the deep balls away on 1st and second, bring the heat the 3rd. Let’s see if the offensive staff knows how to adjust because the defense sure doesn’t.

The one screen I’ve seen this year was just bad. I don’t believe we’re athletic enough to run successful screens unfortunately, Smith is slow and Dotson is a statue.

Monken is right, running game is crucial to keep pressure off qb.
Brady has been effective this year because Sony Michel is effective and Gordon is another weapon.
Benenoch and TE blocking needs to step up.
And Jameis needs to target DJax and Godwin more.
Short passes to Brate and Humphries with no explosive plays isn’t going to get it done.

I don’t think we necessarily need to run more…not with such a deep stable of passing weapons…we just need to be more effective when we do run it! I really don’t think we have the runners we need on this team currently. Time to raid a few rosters or swing a trade for someone who can make a difference on this team.

They are going to have plenty of turnovers now that Jameis is running the show. That’s why he isn’t that good.
