JPP Says He’s In Charge Of Vita Vea

The manbeast rookie in the Bucs’ locker room — and man, Vita Vea looked awfully rocked up today — has caught the attention of his teammates.
How could he not?
The No. 12 overall pick got his first taste of the NFL against the Bears and showed flashes of why he was drafted so early.
Joe asked Jason Pierre-Paul today about his first taste of playing alongside Vea. JPP thinks Vea is on track and he will have a mentor in N0. 90.
“He missed a lot of time but I’m pretty sure he’s going to come back and do what he gotta do,” Pierre-Paul said. “And it starts with practice. How you play in practice is how you’re going to play in the game.
“I’m going to be talking to him communication-wise because we’re going to be playing a lot together. So it’s up to me to get him right, you know, and coaches too.”
Joe loves JPP wanting to take on Vea. The faster he gets up to speed, the faster everyone cleans up and gets paid next season. JPP is due $14.5 million from the Bucs next season (non-guaranteed). He knows double-digit sacks certainly will lock that cash down.
Joe’s not saying JPP is all about money, just noting there’s a lot at stake with Vea as it relates to success on the field and off — for a lot of people at One Buc Palace.

Great that JPP takes initiative…Sad that a guy who has been here 6 months has to be the one, not GMC or more importantly the coaches…
Notice how the coaches were almost an afterthought in JPP’s comment.

How much communication does it really take to play Dline? Especially interior DLine? Fire off. Fill Gap. Tackle the man with the Ball.

My goodness, some people just don’t get it. Do you even know why Oakland traded Mack? It was because they didn’t want to spend all that money on him. Do you know what happens when you trade for a player? You take on their contract. So in your mind, do you really think what you proposed has even the tiniest of chances in the world of happening? You really think they would give up a 25 year old pass rusher (who may end up being the best of all time) for a 30 year old DT with a huge contract (a position of much lower value)? I really wish people would just put a tiny bit of thought into their posts before they post nonsense. The NFL is not a video game, and it isn’t fantasy football. SMDH

You are asking a lot from the dumbest fan base in sports. Remember we had posters who were bashing the jpp trade when it happened as if jpp was not a proven commodity. They know who they are. I wont call them out but the stupidity of this base is alarming. Jpp has only been the best defender on the team by far. Oh thats right some wanted robert quinn and were also butt hurt. smh

I was at a training camp practice before Vea got hurt. McCoy spent at least 30 minutes working with Vea (and a few others) on pass rush moves after practice. So don’t assume that JPP is the only one helping Vea. If you do, you would be wrong.
Playing in the middle in the NFL is an extremely tough position. It takes a while for guys to figure it out. And no, it’s not fill gap and get the ball. That’s laughable. A lot of people don’t realize that the D-Line runs plays as well. They run stunts. They have plays where guys are there to free up others. On some plays, guys are supposed to shoot the gaps, while others do not. I wouldn’t say it’s communication, but there’s a lot that goes into it, and the game moves really fast, and those are grown men blocking him.

It’s all spilled milk at this point..You know I wanted to trade for Mack. You have valid point re: trades and salaries, but we could’ve traded GMC somewhere else, dumped his salary and packaged the picks with our own to take a shot at Mack, no?
Only problem there is GMC’s value to other teams, although according to Joe NFL people all over the league think he is great.
No point in coveting other teams players, but you have to admit, Mack is a force….

With all due respect, like many others, football has been a big part of my life since I was a little kid. Watching, playing some, being an avid fan.

Problem is, we didn’t know Mack was going to be available. Had we known that, maybe things would have been different. Regardless, getting rid of one of the best 3 techniques in the league would not happen. And no, not because other teams don’t want him, but because we don’t want to get rid of him. Think about it, he has survived multiple regimes, and not one person that has ever coached or played with him has said anything but great things about him. The only place where people don’t respect him is in Tampa, even though it’s still only by a small percentage of people. But back to my point, a DE needs a good DT, and vice versa. One more small detail – Mack is a 3-4 OLB. Could he be a 4-3 guy? Absolutely. However, I don’t think he’d be anywhere near as effective. As great as he is and as much as we’d all love to see him in Tampa, it was never going to happen.
Forgive me for being condescending. It’s a website and we are all anonymous, so I’m really not worried about feelings, nor do I expect you to worry about my feelings. I can take just as much as I can dish out – all part of the fun. I just get sick and tired of people blabbing about stuff they know nothing about. Maybe that’s not you, but implying that being a D-Lineman is just filling your gap and tackling the ball is really a ridiculous comment. There’s so much more to it, and anyone with a decent amount of football knowledge would know that. In addition to all the different plays they run, technique is so important at this level. It takes a long time for most interior lineman, so the more help they get the better.

I had an inkling two weeks before he became available, you and I discussed it then. I had the inkling and I’m not a GM in the NFL….
I think the actual technique is to maintain gap integrity and stop the run on your way to the QB…worked for Marinelli and Sapp, works for me.
Clearly you are in the Mike Smith school of Defense, where, if there is an actual game plan, it’s written in Farsi and apparently made inexplicably hard to communicate to others.

Hearing his interview Joe posted a while back about his dad overcoming blindness everyday and leading a happy life has led him on his comeback from the firework incident.

Yes, but both of those things are a lot harder than what you make them out to be. Hand placement, pad level, and overall understanding of the defense are all skills that take time to learn. Surely you aren’t trying to say otherwise. For the record, I always liked the Vea pick, so my point is just arguing your original point that it doesn’t take much communication or learning to be an interior defensive lineman, when in fact nothing could be further from the truth.
I’m in no school where Mike Smith is in attendance. Let’s get that clear right now. I don’t think communication is the issue with Vea so much as learning how to play the position, but communication is a part of the game. He does have to work alongside the DE last I checked. They do run stunts, and he is supposed to push the pocket towards JPP. How many times last year did we see the pocket get pushed, only to have the DE not in position? That doesn’t happen very often with JPP, but Vea still has to know what JPP expects. They feed off each other and work together. No D-Lineman can dominate a game without help.

GMC is a perennial pro bowler and overall a solid player and great human being.
I just wish we won more games, and his attitude/approach wouldn’t be questioned.
Something is wrong though, if all that matters is “having fun”. “Fun” should be defined as the tactical pursuit to victory.
We need to be a winner. As soon as Cleveland gets back to the playoffs, we become the Browns: longest tenured team without a playoff berth.
Thank the lord Chucky got us there in 2008. Because the immortal Kelly Holcomb and Butch Davis took the browns to the playoffs in 2007.

What does the draft have to do with anything? If there was any way Licht could have made it happen, he should have, no matter when.
I don’t know enough about Vea to make any final decisions. I do think your explanation over complicates things. Understanding of the Defense does not appear to be happening for any player right now, so why not keep it simple..i.e. fill your gap and go after the football.
As far as Mack being 3-4 or 4-3? What does it matter? For all intents and purposes, he is a DE for the Bears. I would argue that any Defense is 10 times better no matter where you place him.

Mack makes like $10 mill more per year than GMC ($23.5M vs $14) and you can walk from GMC’s contract after next season easy while Mack = locked in for 5-6 years.
The move would have been awesome lol but doubt they would have done it. They likely value two #1s + the 3rd they got over McCoy and a 1.

I gotcha. I really don’t understand this perception that McCoy just wants to have fun and doesn’t care about winning. Dude played with a torn bicep. Does anyone think he did that for fun? He literally talks about winning in every single interview he ever does. But if you expect him to be Warren Sapp, you’re going to be disappointed. That’s not him, and never will be. He can’t be someone he’s not, nor should he be. People think they know how players should act, but I’m not even trying to listen to them unless they’ve done the same. Have you ever heard Sapp, Brooks, Ronde, etc. ever criticize McCoy for not caring about winning? Ever seen them question his work ethic? Ever seen them wonder about his heart? The answer is no, and there’s a reason for that. Give me one person that has stepped in the building of One Buc that criticizes him for any of this and maybe you could have a point (and no, Ian Beckles has NEVER stepped foot in One Buc since McCoy has been there). Do you or anyone else really think that if McCoy didn’t care, he would be able to escape that being here for 8 years? Come on, think about it.

A 3-4 OLB vs. a 4-3 DE is a world of difference! Come on, seriously? For starters, a 4-3 DE is bigger (a 3-4 guys drops into coverage), has different responsibilities, and plays with his hand in the dirt. Again, could he play it? Absolutely. But it’s not his natural position. That’s a lot to give up to play a guy out of position. He’s good enough to change to a 3-4, but that isn’t happening with Mike Smith, and we all know Koetter isn’t getting rid of Smith.
And no, Sapp was not disruptive all by himself. He had some really good players at nose and DE. I won’t even argue that. And for the 1000000000th time, McCoy is not Warren Sapp. No one is. He’s the greatest 3 technique of all time!!! Comparing anyone to him is going to fall short.
