Indoor Completion Percentages
October 10th, 2018It’s a wonder team suits don’t have whiplash from whipping their necks around so suddenly watching opponents complete passes on the Bucs defense in domes.
Under the Mike Smith defensive regime, the Bucs are 2-7 in domes. And if not for a record-setting day by backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to open the 2018 season, the Bucs would be 1-8 in domes with Smith as the defensive coordinator.
The Bucs are allowing an average of 441 yards and 34 points a game in those same dome games. Joe had this yesterday but a reader wanted to know about completion percentages that Smith’s defense has been gutted for in those same games.
OK, you asked for it. Hope you are sitting down.
In the nine games played under a roof with Smith as a defensive coordinator, teams have completed 230 of 307 attempts. That’s of a vomit-inducing completion rate of 75 percent since the start of the 2016 season.
Just to give you an idea how awful that is, the Bucs currently are allowing opposing quarterbacks to complete 77 percent of their passes, a league-worst figure and it’s not even close. The Cowboys are No. 31 at 72 percent.
Last year, the Bucs also finished dead-last in the NFL in completion percentage allowed at67 percent. So with all the upgrades on the defensive front and the secondary, the Bucs are significantly worse in pass defense. Just amazing.

Funny how the other team that constantly runs strictly zone defense the majority of the time is giving up the second highest completion percentage.
Why is it that they can’t play press coverage? Everyone was we don’t have the guys to do it and that they will get torched. But ask yourselves how much worse v an it get than This? Wouldn’t you rather see them play more aggressive and risk the deep ball but stop getting picked apart like beer can chicken?
This is nothing new. It’s the outdated system. I really hope the players spoke up and stand their ground on the field. What the worst that can happen. Look up at Smitty in the box after the same old calls come.in through the headset, flip him the bird, call the right defense and win the game. What is he gonna do, bench the players that improved across the board?
At some.point when things continue on the same rotten path of failure there comes a time where his authority needs to be challenged. Someone needs to step up. This is a business not a fishing vacation. Oh wait….

I have a feeling the Bucs defense is going to play a lot better this Sunday. Not just because it can’t play any worse, but I am thinking about the turnaround they made a couple years ago after the bye week. I also agree with BucEmUp. These corners were brought in to be more physical and the only chance to stop Julio from getting 300 yards on us is to jam him up at the line and hope the Dline can get to Ryan before Julio can get loose. All we need to do is hit Ryan early in the game (take the penalty it’ll be worth it) and he will throw the ball into the stands and in the dirt for the rest of the day.

Lol bucs are worse than last year, this after making adjustments all summer long. So many people watched training camp and read bucs news all summer and all said the rookies were better than the corners we had. Fast forward after 4 games rookies and communication is being used as an excuse but I say it’s been three years and Smitty has already seen young corners struggle to understand the system so my only question is is he that stupid that he didn’t expect it with these rookies? It’s all on him and you can’t use it as an excuse because you have veterans you could have played first you know kinda the same way he’s done with safeties. This regime is full of hot garbage and more interested in excuses for the media than actual results

I would expect more of the same sunday, only hope we win the turnover battle and score more points. no hope for this defense.

Yep!! Still hearing rookies and miscommunication as the excuse! The least he could do is come up with some other lie as to why it’s still my working. But hey as a professional coach not being able to make a single in game adjustment does it really surprise anyone that he can’t even come up with adjustments for his excuses lol??!!!!

@joe, since you’ve done such a great job finding out the completion% in domes vs smittys defense, can you find out what the hell happened to @realist…..lol…..

The Glazer’s should have told Light and/or Koetter to fire M Smith or else. But just like a lot of players & coaches they just don’t care.
October 10th, 2018 at 12:22 pm
If a top college team like Oklahoma can fire their (actually good) defensive coordinator a few games into the season, you’d think a lowly NFL team like the Bucs would be able to do it.
