The dude calling plays for the NFL’s No. 1 offense — yards and points — was carrying a big stick today.
That 2-for-5 execution of the Bucs in the red zone Monday? It’s on the players, he said.
Todd Monken had plenty to say about the 2017 red zone offense after studying it this offseason. “We chose to suck,” Monken repeated multiple times in May.
Today at his weekly news conference, Monken didn’t go that far about the 2018 red zone work against the Steelers, but he made it clear that failures there are not on him.
“At the end, there isn’t a call that came up that I want to take back, or something, “Monken said. “It’s the execution that we got to do better. That’s the way it is. We got good players. We just got to do it better when you get down there.”
Joe loves how Monken calmly, coolly and consistently points the finger at players. You’re either accountable under Monken or you hit the road.
Joe suspects Monken would happily call himself out, but not if he doesn’t believe it. Most coaches are prone to BS of taking responsibility for every last thing a player does.
It’s a different approach. And you can’t argue with the results through three games.

Hmmm, accountability?? why now?? Do you job and all is well. That’s all you can ask of a player, nothing different. When we get ALL players playing 100% this team will be good.

They can’t talk out of both sides of their mouths. Players have not executed in the red zone yet Coach Smith cant execute a plan on D to stop Armwood. You can’t put it on the players when a particular coach sucks out loud. Smitty lets look at the completion %’s of the 3 QB’s you have faced so far.

I was just referring to the red zone screw ups since the article was about the red zone. Yes there were other screw ups as well.

No excuse why ROJO isn’t going to play. Averaging 3 yards per carry will not cut it. He has explosive play making ability but running behind mostly the 3rd string line did not help him in the preseason. Take a chance on a rookie Dirk it might be your last season if you dont’

I have no complaints about the play calling, except I would have onside kicked on the 50 yard line. That might not be Monken’s decision though.

Everybody is so worried about RoJo. If he can’t do passpro, he can’t play. Before the Pittsburgh game, our running backs, particularly Quizz, were playing lights out in passpro.
It’s also possible that RoJo isn’t active because he isn’t a good enough receiver to be the third down back.
It’s also possible that he doesn’t know the plays, schemes, reads, etc. well enough to be activated.
It’s also possible that the coaches feel Wilson outplayed him in training camp and pre-season games.
Personally, I’d like to see Quizz relegated to third downs (and clear passing downs–like 1st and 20) and see more of Wilson as the every third possession, number two running back.

If y’all so concerned about RBs pass protecting to the point of keeping guys like Rodgers in the rotation then bench Barber and start Rojo. Dude is averaging less than 3 YPC, time for a change.

Would of liked to see more screens with the aggressive blitz but not worried about the best offense we’ve ever had. More worried about the dismal defense

Gamblers..it’s also possible the coach is an idiot, and the only reason we are 2-1 is because the idiot coach isn’t calling plays anymore, when Klueless calls plays we average 20 points a game, besides how can giving a guy a chance when the current RB isn’t doing the job, remember last year staying with Drug Martin

Absolutely ridiculous. His playcalling at the end of the 1st half against the steelers was a joke. 2 minutes left, 1st and goal and you throw it 3 times to give a future hall of fame qb almost 2 minutes to drive down and score. Even if Godwin catches that TD, the steelers still get the ball back and score. Try running the ball for crying out loud!!!!

We are averaging over 30points a game. It makes a huge difference when the qb can hit the reciever in stride so he can run a get yards. We left soooo many yards on the field last year. Gonna have to protect the qb this week!

Was he asked if Dirk told him to return to Dirk’s most coveted play, the run up the middle on 1st down against a stacked defense? Because he didn’t do that in weeks 1 and 2, yet ran that a bunch on Monday with the typical 1.8 ypc results we’ve seen the last two years. Also Dirk saying post game we must run more, that tells me Dirk is slowly taking back control of the play calling duties.

Also not sure how I feel about this answer of acting like he called a perfect game lol.
Steelers were blitzing a lot and we only ran like 2 quick screens the entire game to counter. Should have ran at least 2-3 more screens to RBs to make them pay for over-committing to the blitz. PA to Barber and then dump it to him over the over-committing blitz with a ton of blockers in front him. Should have ran the ball more in general for balance.

that’s what I was thinking….I don’t think its a good idea throwing players under the bus…..sounds like he trying to say, I called the perfect game we lost because of the players….thats BS…..
be careful what you say monken because what goes around comes around…..you don’t wantbarber saying if we ran the ball more we could’ve won but the person calling the plays aint getting me the ball…..
monken could’ve said, ive got to do a better job of creating mismatches and players have to do a better job executing and winning their 1 on 1’s…..that would make everyone accountable…..

Lord C- I was thinking the same thing. We seemed to be looking downfield a lot. The best way to beat the blitz is to throw it where the defenders were, short.

Bucs beat themselves with drops, fumbles and penalties at the worse times. Love the way Monken talks players gotta be accountable for these mistakes. I’m looking for a bounce back in the windy city this Sunday

There’s no excuse for not getting chunk yards when opposing teams are scared to death of our aerial attack. If you can’t run with a passing offense like this, that is telling to the point that we have some seriously below average runners. The OL is doing their job as well. No excuses. If it doesn’t pick up in the 2nd quarter of the season, it never will.
Might as well play RoJo and see what you got. Some guys just play better in real game situations. Don’t put him in passing downs if you’re scared of his passpro. It might be obvious when we run, but you can change it up with Barber, RoJo, and Wilson on running plays. But give him a shot to show some game breaking runs. You don’t get a RB in the 2nd Round for passpro. Work around his skill set if you’re a professional coach and get him on the field and his hands on the ball.

That’s also the case if he hasn’t picked up the playbook. So what? Put him in plays he gets. If Philly can change their offense to suit Foles’s style, why can’t the same be done for a RB who doesn’t have to make check downs, slide the OL, make reads, audible, etc. See hole, run. Or follow block and run. KISS. This kid, if he’s worth his salt, will show his skills when he’ll get a chance to use his instincts when he’s running. Don’t put him in passing downs.

Monken would probably include more rub/pick plays in the red zone
