Gerald McCoy Talks Dirk Koetter & The Defense

September 21st, 2018

Dirk Koetter said he’s been spending more time talking to players across his roster with some of the slight extra time he has now that Todd Monken is calling plays and serving as a full-time offensive coordinator.

Today, Joe asked Gerald McCoy if he’s felt more of Koetter’s impact on the defense or more of the head coach’s personal time on that side of the ball.

“We’ve seen him in meetings and stuff, but he pretty much lets [Mike Smith], you know, have control,” McCoy said. “We hear from him every now and then but now he can be everywhere, but I wouldn’t say he has like a personal hand on the defense. He’s everywhere. It’s just what he wanted to do and it’s great for him and us. It’s been working.”

Nothing too exciting here and, of course, Koetter might be exerting more of his influence on the defense to coaches behind the scenes.

Either way, more Koetter influence across the team and the coaching staff is a good thing as Joe sees it.

The great thing is that Head Coach Koetter does not have to influence the defensive coaches!!!!!! In fact it is a positive the Head Coach Koetter can have a great sounding board in Coach Smitty!!!!!!!!! Just look at the example of the Bucs Defensive coaches out coach the Eagles defensive coaches!!!!!!!! The Bucs did more with less!!!!!!! The eagles with more experience/talent were flat out embarrssased when compared to the Bucs Coaching!!!!!!! The “real” fans will take Coach Smitty any day over schwartz and as the season goes on, so will the sheep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like McCoy thought you meant only during the week. I would be interested in how Dirk gets involved with the defensive players during a game.

I think the head coach can be a good motivator on the sidelines, since Smitty is up in the booth!

The majority of experts are still picking against the Bucs. I love it, let’s keep the “no one believes in us” theme going a little longer it seems to really help get our bucs motivated! 🙂

Whatever they’re doing, whether directly with the players or behind the scenes, seems to be working! No one, except for a few die hard Bucs fans, ever thought we’d be 2-0 at this point in the season. Still a long way to go, but man, what a fun ride so far!

    Altered ego

A lot of the negative a-holes masquerading as fans have disappeared.Theyll be back after the first loss. Bank on it.

“The Bucs did more with less!!!!!!!”

The Bucs also had to face a much lesser offense than the 2017 Eagles typical unit (Wentz/Burton/Blount/Jeffrey all not playing); or the 2018 Bucs juggernaught that the Eagles faced; but either way I’m proud of the staff through 2 games.

I’ve been critical but never gave up on these guys; and they’re doing what I was hoping they would in terms of adjustments to the approach last year. Major props to Koetter for letting Monken take over and for running a tougher camp this year

Lmao, Realist did you not see the part where RYAN Fitzpatrick expoloed and the offense put up 800 passing yards and truck load of Touchdowns? Then you.get on here and give SMITTY THE CREDIT???!!!!

Trying to make sense of it…
