Mark Dominik: “This Is Fitz’s Team”

September 20th, 2018

“Mark, you see my receivers? No Tiquan Underwood or Kevin Ogletree here.”

Former Buccaneers rockstar general manager Mark Dominik predicted the Bucs would be a 9-7 team this season and now he’s all-in with Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback.

Dominik isn’t just impressed by the offensive output. He sees the locker room chemistry, so Dominik told WDAE-AM 620 today.

“It seemed to me like watching the Fitzpatrick [postgame] press conference and just how much comfort he had and how much fun he was, that locker room loves that man,” Dominik said. “There’s a lot of happiness going on. And yeah, wins breed that, but it just seems like a very confident team right now and I don’t know why that would slow down.”

It’s not just playcalling and offensive talent taking over, Dominik said, there are real differences between Fitzpatrick and America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston. Fitz is doing what Jameis doesn’t.

“I think that Ryan does such a great job of finding the open person instead of forcing it to the best player,” Dominik said. “I mean, there’s a reason why O.J. Howard now is also averaging 30 yards a catch, or Chris Godwin’s now scored a touchdown in two games when he had one last year. What I think Fitz does so well is he finds the open guy and let’s the offense, you know, throw to the open spot, where I think Jameis sometimes would go, ‘Hey look, I know where Evans is going to be, or I know where Cameron Brate is going to be; I’m going to throw it to those two dudes.’ And then he would force it there instead of looking for the open opportunity. We’ll see. … To me, this is Fitz’s team.”

Dominik went on to say the Bucs are unlikely to panic and there’s really no problem letting Fitzpatrick play all season long and then Jameis being the guy to start the 2019 season.

If the Bucs remain playoff contenders, or Fitzpatrick keeps playing well, then you don’t make any QB change, Dominik said. “You just don’t mess up that mojo,” he added.

Annnnd this is why we had to draft a QB #1 overall…

  3. Godeep66 Says:

Fitzy over Ditzy. As I have been saying all along, JW does not have the mental capacity to read NFL defenses. Now get rid of him NOW. He will become a cancer when he gets back in the locker room.

  4. Dapostman Says:

All you had to do was look at the preseason in 2018. Fitz played good not great. Winston played great not good. The talking heads are like politicians who jump on whatever bandwagon that gets them to the next bandwagon. They will all say the same thing. Fitz should play until he shouldn’t play. This guy is no different. If he was different he would have built a good team while he was here in Tampa. Instead the roster was below average. This guy says, “there’s a reason O.J. Howard is averaging 30 yards a catch.” Yes there is. Because O.J. Howard took a 13 yard pass and ran 62 more yards. What a dumbass. No wonder this clown is out at OBP.

  5. The Buc Realist Says:

Wow Joe!!!! I can’t believe anyone is letting this buffoon to talk sports on the radio still!!!!!!! I thought talk show dominik would just be doing zany morning radio!!!!!!!!!!!!! And he said that JW3 is forcing to best player (brate) instead of the open player (Howard)?????????? That explains his terrible rosters he tried to put together!!!!!!!! The guy is a clown shoe!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only time Fitz has been better than Jameis is these two games. Would love to see the 24 year old qb with the new playcaller. And his constant improvement every year.

  8. horse liver Says:

The so called GM who went 28-52 with such deals as trading premium picks for a guy a team ws going to cut anyway and then paying him $16 large a season to rehab a bum knee in Tampa…………actually makes a valid point. Sure glad he was fired though. Still sorry he was ever hired.

  9. Not there yet Says:

For once it’s hard to agree to agree with Dominick. Want to know who a lot of the Winston haters are? I didn’t find out until I went to a game last year. There were wide receiver running wide open all day long against the Patriots, you don’t see these things on the but Winston doesn’t read the field well enough to lead the team. He needs to sit and watch how it’s done then take over

  10. lurker Says:

fitz has more #1 ability than jameis…

    availability.

and the desean getup is way more impressive than eating w’s.
also, no silly hot-headedness pushing defenders in the helmet or running through your coaches.

  11. T REX Says:

    Worst GM in Bucs history.

Memo to the Winston nutswingers: JW can’t make those deep throws. I know it. You know it. Fitz knows it. And JW knows it. Changing the plays at the line of scrimmage? JW can’t do that either. ANyone thinking JW would do as well or better than Fitz is a moron.

  12. tickrdr Says:

@ D the Bucs fan, and no one else in particular:

Before everyone gets too excited about the unbelievably outstanding performance by Ryan Fitzpatrick in these first two games, did anyone else notice how many times he stared down his receiver, and then threw into double or triple coverage???

    Yeah, ………………… me neither.
Hitting receivers in stride allows them to gain YAC.

    For example:
    ME13 2017: 136 targets 71 receptions for 52.2% catch percentage and 5 TDs.
    2018: 19 targets 17 receptions for 89.5% catch percentage and 2 TDs.
1001 yards in 2017, but already 230 yards in 2018, with improved YAC.

DJax 2017: 90 targets 50 receptions for 55.6% catch percentage and 3 TDs.
    2018: 9 targets 9 receptions for 100% catch percentage and 2 TDs.
668 yards in 2017, but already 275 yards in 2018, with improved YAC.
BTW, 2 of his 3 TDs in 2017 were………………… Fitz to DJax. Go figure?

BTW#2: The Bucs managed to score 335 POINTS in 2017. Ryan Fitzpatrick played three full games, and mop-up duty in three others. While in there the Bucs scored 105 points. (65 in three starts, and 33 vs. Ariz, and 7 vs. NO). So, in approximately 4 games of play last year, Fitz and the Bucs’ offense averaged about 26.2 points per game. That leaves 230 points during the approximately 12 games of play led by JW3, which yields an average of ONLY 19.16 ppg!

  14. Big Stinky Says:

Why does he have to say it’s Fitz’s team. We need to stay positive. Talk like that just adds to the controversy going on. Jameis will get his chance to prove himself. Let Jameis get some reps before starting him. He’s going to need it. #FearTheBeard #GoBucs

  15. SuncoastD Says:

Derrick, lose the silly sunglasses. Wear them when you’re walking around town. You want people to watch you on a podcast show your eyes when you communicate !!! How do your directors not say anything about that. How many news or sports shows does the speaker where sunglasses ??? Noe even Neon Deion does that !!!

  16. BrianBucs Says:

If Winston will keep his eyes and ears open and his mouth shut he can learn a LOT about playing QB in the NFL from Fitz. Then he can put that knowledge to use to help his new team

  17. Jeffbuc Says:

I agree and I am a jameis supporter. Just think when jameis was starting how many times your heard ronde or another announcer. Say he had him wide open he just never saw him. I don’t think about that until this article. And now just looking back they showed a man running wide open a lot of time s that jameis didn’t see. And this plays right into what monken or koetter said why we weren’t good enough last year. He said we missed a lot of open guys not just throws but didn’t see guys wide open. Every young qb would benefit from watching and learning. Jameis was thrown right into the fire. He was managing a 10 year veteran scheme. Usually they tailor playbooks for rookies to simplify and they didn’t do that with jameis. I think Fitz playing so great will benefit jameis in the long run. He can’t sit back and watch and talk with Ryan why he went there on that play and what he saw. Then maybe he can use that when it is his turn to take over. But in no way do you take Fitz out unless he has to awful games in a row. Like 0 tds 3-4 picks type of games. He is bound to have a 2td 3 interception game. But ride this hot streak all the way to the playoffs. And then no one would want to see us. And of course this happens the year I finally cancel my tickets.

  18. Godeep66 Says:

@jeffbuc: now your finally starting to use that noggin.

  19. FairMinded Says:

Much respect tickdr. Facts are facts

  20. Dooshlarue Says:

    Good take Jeffbuc.

  21. FairMinded Says:

Jeffbuc biggest thing Jameis hopefully will learn from watching Fitz is what the Bucs learned under the greatest leader this franchise has ever seen which is Tony Dungy- be cool, be calm, be collected, don’t let the highs get to you, don’t let the lows get to you (just listen to 55 on the Tampa 2 vid…it’s jist echoes of 20 years ago). When that supremely talented young guy gets that… his natural talents will take this team to heights we cannot imagine. Until then, Fitz has that part of his heart and head figured out and is deserving of our love, admiration and the National accolades JW will have to work years (hopefully with us) to receive

  22. D the Bucs fan Says:

Tick. So the stats from 2017 is just from Jameis throwing to Evans and djax? Its great for the bucs fitz is playing well. I hope he doesnt fold. Under pressure of expectations now. Did u notice how well our pass protection has been as well. I would like to see our qb who I’ve seen in the last seven games he’s played in. Look like the qb we need him to be.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

@Dapostman … “All you had to do was look at the preseason in 2018. Fitz played good not great. Winston played great not good.” Did I miss something? I thought Fitz did excellent in preseason against 1st team defenses. Winston did excellent too against 2nd team defenses. Fitz has played lights-out in leading us to 2 wins thus far in the REAL games, while Jameis was sitting with the lights out probably on his couch. The NFL is a “What Have You Done For Me Lately?” league Dapostman. Sorry, but right now it’s Fitz 2, Jameis 0. Give Fitz his props for doing a GRRREAT job in helping get this TEAM focused, after Jameis’ ‘hassle’ almost derailed the season BEFORE the train ever left the station. It really isn’t all about Jameis … it’s about TEAM.

  24. Buc4life Says:

It’s great the Bucs are winning, but did we forget Jameis played with an injured shoulder last year, tried to play through it and had no volosity on the ball. The offensive line couldn’t block anyone? Both Godwin and Howard were rookies and also playing injured. Plus Koetter loved running two tight end sets? This offense is totally new with Monken putting players in situations to succeed. I hope Fitz continues to play well, but I think Jameis can take us to another level when the defenses figure our current offense out. Check out the few plays in the preseason where Jameis was running the pass/option, it looked really good. Dont count Jameis out yet because Fitz has been know to lay eggs.

  25. Buc1987 Says:

“To me, this is Fitz’s team”

Just so long as it’s not your team Dom….

Rolling my eyes…smh….it’s everyone’s team Dom every player on the roster. It’s Koetter and Smitty’s too.

    It’s my team too.

  26. Destinjohnny Says:

    Dom actually nailed it
Wow can’t believe I’m saying that

  27. D the Bucs fan Says:

Ronde said the same thing of fitz if would have held on a half sec longer Mike Evans was running wide open. Every qb in the league over throws guys misses, open guys, stares down guys, throws the ball falling down in the grasp of a defender. You don’t watch enough football if you don’t know this. Every qb of every team makes a dumb throw. That’s why no one completes 100 percant of their passes. No qb is perfect.

  28. Buc1987 Says:

Buc4life…all that stuff is called excuses remember. The weapons and time he has to throw…that has nothing to do with it ya see? He’s magic ya know….

We could put Fitz up on the trade block tomorrow…and not field one call.

    Love the guy though….go 9-0, 12-0 whatever…just keep winning.

  29. Buc1987 Says:

Perhaps we should have tried to get Fitz 10 years ago….cause hey…ya know he’s a football god.

  30. Larry woods Says:

Y’all don’t know what Jameis can do if you’re being objective because he’s never been protected by line play that has been as good as Fitz has gotten these first two games. I’ll wait until Fitz fitz’s again and see how much y’all love him still

  31. Doug prescott Says:

    I totally agree!! Go bucs!!

  32. Dooshlarue Says:

It’s possible Fitz is a late bloomer.

  33. Doug prescott Says:

This is Fitz team!! The Jameis suspension is a total blessing, we can finally see what Koetters offense can do, he can scan a defense and hit an open receiver. Go bucs!!

  34. Cobraboy Says:

What Winston needs to perform like Fitzpatrick is 10 years maturity and 30 more IQ points.

Dominick makes an excellent point: Fitzpatrick takes what a D gives him and doesn’t force the ball. Winston forces the ball, which is why casual fans are impressed with how Winston can throw into tight windows. Fact is there is ample film evidence Winston often doesn’t see guys who are really open, so he forces the ball to a guy he trusts…into tight windows.

And Winston turns the ball over, Fitzpatrick does not.

Gee, I see the Winston haters saying he’s terrible and needs to get cut, and I see the non-tards saying ride Fitz until his magic runs out. Sort of like I’ve been seeing on the last 45 articles on this same subject.

  37. BucEmUp Says:

My.only fear with Winston is he goes to another team and makes the Bucs look foolish.

But hey, how often does something like happen to the same team more than once RIGHT!?!!?

Unforunalty winning is a must and don’t replace an engine that’s running and it looks like Fitz just finally broke in

  38. Buc1987 Says:

    Dooshlarue Says:

“It’s possible Fitz is a late bloomer”

He’s a late bloomer alright…put him on the trade block tomorrow. I’m sure there’s MANY teams that would line up to get Fitz. He’s an all star.

I’m sure his numbers won’t drop off with another team too. Trade him away and see how well he does. See if he starts the day after he’s signed too….or will he ride the pine?

I thin you know the answer….I think everyone does.

    Give me a break already!

  39. tickrdr Says:

    @D the Bucs fan:
I’m not sure I understand your question, but if you are asking if those stats posted above represent ONLY Jameis’ passes to ME and DJ in 2017, then that answer is no……… the stats are the totals for the year, regardless of the QB throwing. They are from pro football reference, and you can check the gamelogs for 2017 for each player. FYI though, neither receiver has had even one game with higher catch percentage than BOTH games this year.

No one can absolutely know that JW3 perhaps could have done as well or even better than Fitz. After all he has only passed for > 800 yards, thrown 8 passing TDs, rushed for 1 TD, and only 1 turnover on a fumbled pass which was perfectly thrown, and won our first two games against the reigning NFCS Division champs and the reigning Super Bowl Champs. But do you REALLY think that?

    Yeah, …………………… me neither.

    As the old saying goes….”It’s Fitz’s team…until it isn’t Fitz’s team.”

I’m not a JW hater by any stretch and I still believe he has more natural talent. But Fitz has shown some poise we haven’t seen from JW…of course a lot of that could be experience and age difference.

JW will get his chance soon enough. What Fitz has done is set the bar really really high for #3. And that’s all good!!! We are deep at QB what a disturbing problem to have if you read our threads.

Here is something cool to consider…you don’t really have to line up behind Fitz or Jameis…it doesn’t have to be an either or…it could be a both!

  43. Big Stinky Says:

Fitzpatrick is probably going to get NFC POTW again as bad as the Steelers defense played last week. Man I hope so. Can you believe we have the first player to throw for 4000 yards in his first two seasons. Now a Bucs QB is the first to start the season with 400 yards and 4TD’s in the first two games. Good stuff! #FearTheBeard #GoBucs

What happened to my follow-up, it was never posted. Anywho of course I was messing with you Winston haters, just giving you an example of how incredibly moronic you dopes sound by reversing who is doing what. The point is if you hate Winston, think he’s a terrible QB and want him gone you’re an unreasonable d-bag whose opinion doesn’t matter.

But anywho you ride Fitz until his hot streak is over and then Jameis comes in. Simple stuff…. and if Fitz’s hot streak doesn’t end, well then the Bucs are world champions and Winston is still under contract for next year. Works for me.

  50. Hawk Says:

Curing cancer and negotiating peace are OK, but if he can get all the blockheads in congress to come together and solve the deficit, I’m in favor of him starting for an extra week. 😉

  51. mark2001 Says:

The real America’s quarterback, two weeks in a row NFC Offensive Player of the week, also the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for over 400 yards and 4 touchdowns in the first two games to open the season, Ryan “this is my team now” Fitzpatrick. God this situation is like a dream or nightmare for the Jameis apologists. Even the ones that trash Fitz all the time know he belongs on the field until and if he starts faltering. tickrdr – I wasn’t talking about anyone, in fact I posted that without even bothering to read any comments since they’d just be the exact same comments already made hundreds of times before.

As for the other post about Fitz, it was a parody of the Winston haters, as Buc1987 posted. I was showing how it doesn’t matter what Winston does, Winston haters are going to hate him and downplay everything he does- I just flipped the names around. But in fairness my follow-up I did shortly after the original post didn’t post for some reason, so I did a follow-up like the next day or something which is what was posted above.

  55. gotbbucs Says:

So by the same rationale that some of you are going by right now with this “ride Fitz until he has a bad game” crap, does that mean they should yank Winston when he has a 2 fumble-2 INT game? If that’s the case Winston would get benched every other game.

Winton made a name for himself by bringing Florida State back from behind in games…..games that Winston actually put them in that hole.

Look, I was a proponent of taking Winston over Mariotta when they came out. I still think between the two Winston is probably a more gifted QB, but stats be damned, Winston is still making boneheaded decisions with the football….constantly. He will be out of the league in 5 years.

  56. Not there yet Says:

There will be a lot of tears when so many people find out they are wrong and don’t actually know anything about football because they are quoting stats. Fitz is the past and Winston is the future sorry to tell you. Enter sean mcvay and that offense is top notch. Carson Wentz sucked his first year. You have to build your system around your qbs strengths. Which Dirk doesn’t do. Dapostman,

Comparing preseason numbers then concluding that one set of numbers is elite vs the other pedestrian is f ing ridiculously funny. Like watching a bum picking up cigarette butts to find the good one. That’s the depths you’re plummeting to…
Pre-season….the word pre mean anything at all to you? Who won the pre season super bowl? …..worst freaking part the numbers aren’t much different. Yet JW is elite …….then why isn’t JW elite in season. Because it counts?

I like JW.. But the sycophants and starstruck have become excuse makers and cherry pickers. Have really divided the fans into two groups. Haters and fans.
If you’re not churning out excuses for JW and telling everyone Fitzpatrick is …..fill in the blank……then you’re a hater. Which is total bs btw but it’s not the point.
Point is JW is a divisive player , when he should be a player that unifies the fans.
And he’s not the problem. It’s the JW fans who refuse to be united , unified .

If you’re a bucs fan, you’re a JW fan. And vice versa.

Culture Club-lovin’ ex-GM Mark Dominik could only dream of having this problem when he was running the team. He may be right about Fitz, but he’s still a man without conviction, and he’s still a man doesn’t who doesn’t know.

  77. Bucman0620 Says:

I’m not saying he is right or wrong… But I do find it amusing that anyone even cares what Dominik has to say about this team.

  78. Reach87 Says:

Funny. At the 30,000 foot level, Fitz is playing lights out along with the rest of the offense. Special teams is average (missed PATs, but good coverage), and defense is playing better (good enough to win, which is the bottom line IMO). Winston is suspended and is not part of the equation. BUT he is still on the team. I see no reason to denigrate his ability or standing based on how the TEAM has played so far in 2 games, unless you have a bias. Indications are that he has improved just as the team has. Whenever/ if ever the coaches put him back in, My sense is we will continue to improve and win games. My sense is also that when that happens, much like all those “0-3” Bucs fans spouting off before the first kickoff, alot of you are going to disappear for a few weeks rather than giving the team credit. Can’t wait. Keep it coming. On a more relavant note: hope we are working on a few schemes to run effectively on Monday and working on our run fits. Connor is a good back, but we can shut him down. I think as long as we can stop them from breaking big runs on us we can press a bit more on their WRs Big test for complimentary defense this week. We can win this game. Go Bucs!

@D the Bucs@ does the D stand for dumbarse/dummy/dbag/duh/dumpster fire/delicate/dip shart???? Pick one as your comments are DDDDUUUUMMMMBBBB. All of the QBs you speak of in your message above are intelligent…. JW is not.

  80. K_Bassuka Says:

Dominik is buying into it = it is not going to work just like most of his decisions. Wish this guy would just go away!

    HomerSimpsonRocks Says :

“Dapostman: to be fair, JW was throwing against the 2nd team D, so not exactly apples to apples comparison.”

He also played with 2nd team WR’s…but no on ever mentions that….

  82. Buc1987 Says:

tickrdr…I think we should trade Jameis for Mike Glennon….

Your other better than Jameis QB……

Perhaps you have a list of other back ups around the league that’s better too.
