DJax Talks Bucs QB Job

September 18th, 2018
DeSean Jackson

Who should be Bucs QB?

Now we know where DeSean Jackson stands.

The Bucs receiver, who leads the NFL with 275 yards receiving, appeared on “All Access” last night and the biggest topic of conversation was how he dressed Bucs backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick Sunday after the Bucs beat the world champion Philadelphia Eagles.

After some lighthearted chatter, Jackson was asked who should be the starting quarterback a week from today when America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, returns from his three-game sentence.

Jackson said, strike while the iron is hot. Keep Fitz behind center while he is streaking.

“Honestly man, he’s playing on fire now,” Jackson said of Fitz. “The way the team is rallying behind him and just playing lights out football, you have to kind of honor it. You can’t take the hot man out. He’s got the hot fire right now.”

Jackson likened it to a basketball player who is shooting lights out. You keep feeding him the ball until he starts clanging bricks.

“It’s not my decision,” Jackson said on who will play quarterback at Chicago in two weeks. “I am sure [Bucs coach Dirk Koetter and offensive coordinator Todd Monken] will let him stay on fire [until] that fire is out.”

This is just a little bit surprising for Joe to hear. Not that Jackson wants the QB responsible for him having the most receiving yards in the NFL, but that he would admit it.

Joe already wrote about sensing Jackson was having the most fun he’s ever had as a Bucs receiver, maybe for the first time he is enjoying himself in Tampa.

Wonder how Jameis feels about all of this?

jameis should make a statement…hold a press conference in geraldini’s batcave and show support for fitzbeardrick and the team

  2. Steven007 Says:

How Jameis hopefully feels is humbled. Djax is finally getting the rock consistently. Why would he want that to end?

  3. Chris in WA Says:

Starting Winston is a gamble that no one wants to make. You think there is a controversy now? Imagine if Winston was rushed back too quickly and he has just an okay game or even a bad game. Not only could that cause locker room issues, but imagine what it could do to Winston’s confidence.

The “start Winston” crowd is banking on him A) Winning and B) performing at a similar level with Fitzpatrick. If both of those things don’t happen it is just fuel on the fire whether it’s Winston’s fault or not. You know what you have with Fitzpatrick as of now so if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I’m sure it wasn’t easy for Koetter to let Monken call plays but he did it for the strength and health of the team and locker room and the team is better because of it. Winston should take a lesson from Koetter.

  4. YoungBucs Says:

Until Jameis grows an epic magical football beard I say to the bench with him. Dilly,Dilly!!!!

  5. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

Let King Fitz continue to reign.

  6. Waterboy Says:

I agree with DJax they’re 2-0 and the offense is rolling! There’s no reason to change the offense at this point. If the Magic continues for the rest of the season Winston will have a chance to compete for the starting job in camp next year while on his 5th year option.

  7. adam from ny Says:

donovan smith needs to make jameis grow a big ole fitzie beard when he is done throwing monken around like a rag doll

  8. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

I think Winston should back up Fitz until he gets injured. With the Bears on the schedule, Fitz may not make it to the bye week. Those guys are mean in Chicago.

  9. Blue-footed booby Says:

I agree with DJax. Let’s save that $20 million by releasing Winston next offseason and use that cash to help resign our better players who are coming up for new contracts and build around America’s Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick as our new full time starting quarterback.

  10. Trench War Says:

When Winston comes back I think they will shop Fitz to make room for Griffin. We’ll take a fifth round pick, thankyou please, because chances are once Winston gets back in there it will take an act of God to replace him. Winston doesn’t want to lose this gig and who can blame him with all the weapons on offense. With these weapons he stands to make a whole lotta money. I know this might not be popular but who really believes Fitz will be here next year working for the minimum. Besides Griffin showed he also has game.

  11. YoungBucs Says:

If and when Winston throws 75 yard dimes for TD’s even occasionally I’ll start listening.

  12. Gambelero Says:

Even the pro Fitz/anti-Jameis crowd is saying, “If he keeps playing like this…”

If he keeps playing like this, he’ll throw for 6500 yards, averaging 12+ yards per attempt, with 64 touchdowns and 8 interceptions—all of which occurred when he hit the receiver right in the hands only to have the receiver bobble the ball in the air to be intercepted.

  13. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Bucs can’t just win can they? Got to be some sort of catch. Some sort of drama. I’m a believer in Winston. I don’t think decisions like this can be decided by a “hot hand”. Coaches always say they put the players on the field that give the team the best chance to win. Hard to really say that Fitz is that. He’s playing great, but that doesn’t make him better than Winston. Just my two cents, but I would understand if they stick with Fitz and would support him just the same.

  14. YoungBucs Says:

Fitz is available and winning right NOW Jameis should’ve learned about keeping his hands to himself HE made this happen to himself and I don’t think you coddle him let him keep Fitz’s bench warm until the magic runs out.

  15. Nole4JabooANDdBucs Says:

Of course Djax feels that way, because Mike is Jameis guy, Cam, Hump, Chris, OJ, and yes Djax…who like Fitz are in their prime.

Short memories Fitz makes mistakes too…that’s why he’s a back up.

And JW and company beat the Saints last year after Jameis came back from injury. and Jameis lit up Philly prior years with less of a supporting cast.

Not only Jameis improved but the receivers have improved!
Coming off of the pre-season Fitz just played first, but he Jameis wouldn’t have done!
They will game plan for Fitz…eventually…he just shocked them so bad!

  16. DB55 Says:

    Jameis against the world. #RunJameisRun

  17. UgandanKnuckles Says:

It’s Jameis’ fault he’s in the situation he’s in. Hope he realizes that and doesn’t take it personally if he has to ride the bench until Fitzmagic runs out of mana.

  18. Elita Vita Says:

So what’s making the improved team appear?
Is it Fitzmagic? Is it Monken game day play calling? Is it the new free agents? Is it all of the above?
Whatever it is, if it continues…..when Jameis returns to play, his on field errors will be even more glaring.
In any case, considering the way Khalil Mack is playing, that game against Chicago will be the “Bear”.

  19. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Wonder how Jameis feels about all of this?” One more time Joe … ‘It’s NOT all about Jameis.’ It’s about TEAM, and the way this TEAM is playing, it doesn’t need a savior Jameis to win. Fitz is providing EXACTLY what this TEAM has needed all along … a steady hand & some true leadership on the field (BTW, not unlike what Brad Johnson provided during our Super Bowl year IMO).

One of the key things that’s stood out these first 2 games to me is that the Bucs are playing close to error-free on offense. More than anything, that’s thanks to Fitz IMO (and no, that supposed-INT last game was not an INT, it was a catch-and-fumble). He’s making SMART decisions, he’s protecting the ball, and he’s throwing dead on-target. Those are the 3 areas that ‘Bad Jameis’ has had issues with now for 3 years. But when ‘Good Jameis’ shows up, he’s almost as good as Fitz is right now. We’re winning right now because we’re finally playing as a TEAM, and as long as Fitz provides the FIELD GENERALSHIP to keep this TEAM going in that direction … DON’T MESS WITH IT. Ultimately it more-than-likely is Jameis’ team, but this time it’s on HIM to show that he deserves this TEAM’s trust & respect in him as its’ leader.

  20. Bob in Valrico Says:

Fitz has calmly and efficiently run this offense. He has been making good reads
and delivering the ball to wide open receivers. He is placing the ball where they have the best chance to catch it and extend the play. I know its only two games
but the deep ball and red zone efficiency needs to continue for this team to
    keep winning.

  21. Rod Munch Says:

As a huge Winston backer, of course you ride the guy with the hot hand for so long as he is hot. Fitz is playing lights out, has a 151.5 QB rating, is on pace for over 6000 yards and 64 TDs, plus another 8 rushing. If Fitz keeps it up he’ll not only rewrite the record books, he’ll also carry the Bucs to a perfect 19-0 season.

But let’s not be children here, that is going to happen, and I can’t wait to see Winston playing in this offense, it’s going to be special. But in the meantime enjoy the Fitz hot streak and ride it until the wheels fall off.

  22. 1sparkybuc Says:

Ride the bubble ‘til it bursts. At some point Fitz will come back to earth. Not likely he plays 14 more games like the first 2. Jameis is a team player, and he knows his time will come again soon. GO BUCS

  23. El_Buc941 Says:

Fear The Beard! Guys,Joe, it’s easy….look at the YAC,look at our record and whomever we already beat, people said we were a one week wonder, we’re not! Keep Fitzpatrick as starter until he goes sour. Let this been a lesson to Winston that you can’t just get things handed to you no matter what you’ve achieved or how much the Bucs pay you. Around here you earn a job and earn respect. Easy as that.
    #FitzMagic # Fear The Beard #Captain Fear

  24. BigHogHaynes Says:

To the masses that no longer want Jameis around, what happened to it was Jameis’s job at the end of last season! Should being suspended take your job away…I say no. Fritz is on fire but who played better in preseason? Anyway it has been in the past and it will be again ….THESE THINGS ALWAYS SEEM TO WORK THEMSELVES OUT!! COME ON BACK JAMEIS & GO BUCS!!

  25. Bob in Valrico Says:

When your QB averages 13.4 yards per completion, you stay with him.
That probably isn’t sustainable through an entire season. He has also completed
16 passes over 20 yards so far in just two games. Explosive plays are making this offense exciting.
The amount of explosives have been decreasing under Jameis the last three years. In 2015 Jameis had 66 passes completed over 20 yards. In 2016 it fell to 47,and in
2017 he had only 37. No question his shoulder injury affected this total. Limiting
turnovers and sustaining drives the entire game will be necessary to increase his explosives.

  26. Rick Says:

It just seems like the team doesn’t really respond to all the rah, rah, stuff Jameis offers every Sunday before the game. It works for some, but Jameis is talking all this stuff and then makes poor decisions that cost them the game. Talk is cheap. It doesn’t matter who’s calling plays or how good the line is. Fitz is doing this with ZERO threat of a running attack. He’s balling because he makes good decisions. Throwing the ball away, running, eating sacks when he has to. The team is balling and actually looks like they’re having fun doing it. Talking about the end of the season is redundant. Let this play out and see how long we can win with fitz.

  27. Bird Says:

    Defense rules

    Nailed it.

Also agree with rick. Guy is playing at all world level. Ride him as long as you can. Jameis will get his shot at some point this year or next . Of course Djax is stoked. He is being used properly and Fitz is hitting him for the long ball when 1 on 1. He should have had 5 more tds last year on those same deep plays.

And dang that Chicago defense is nasty. I can’t believe gruden traded khalil Mack. I mean I can but what another bad personnel move by gruden who will get his GM fired shortly

And Of course the writers here are making this personal between Jameis and Djax. Players always give the same pcu lame response. Good for Djax being honest. Plus, you all wanted him out anyway after last year. The best excuse I heard last year was Djax was to fast for Jameis to make the deep completion. You Jameis messiah excuse givers are just the worst

  28. Walter Seidel Says:

This is the PERFECT opportunity for the Bucs to move on from the years-long controversy known as Winston.

  29. Bucsfanman Says:

We’re assuming that when Winston returns he will play at a high level. Here’s a newsflash: Without the suspension, Jameis was playing for his job. Meaning that he has not shown that he can be the franchise guy YET. It’s neither an indictment of Fitz nor a dig at Jameis. It’s fact. In 3 years as the starter, he has yet to show that he can be anything other than a better than average QB.
Because the Bucs are HIGHLY invested, they have no choice but to start him at some point. That said, as with any QB, if he fails he will be replaced. The Bucs don’t owe Jameis anything.
Do I think Jameis can flourish with the same tools? Sure. He has to PROVE it.
Right now this offense is humming. If you’re a Bucs fan, it doesn’t matter that it’s Fitzy and not Jameis. We’re winning. Winning is the ONLY thing that matters.

  30. Bird Says:

How bout we all agree – go bucs!

And stop worrying about one player who is not even on team because he put himself in that situation. It should be about the team. Not one player who this site goes out of its way to cover just one player.

This is the most exciting offense we have ever seen in Tampa and people are complaining about a qb controversy. Fitzmagic is walking on water right now and only some people care about is that Jameis gets his starting job back next week or the world will end.

Get a grip people. You ride this hot hand until it’s not. Jameis will get his shot this year or next

  31. NJBucsFan Says:

The TEAM probably feels great about their success. Winston currently is not on the roster so his feelings are really a moot point. Fitz has really brought this team together. Winston’s “leadership” was lost when he did his est some W’s speech. The team looks like they enjoy having Fitz at the helm. Didn’t see that last year with Winston there.

    Fitz memes> Winston memes

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

You all know this quarterback controversy is completely media driven, right? Last year, when Fitz won 2 of 3, the topic of switching was not an issue. Jameis went right back to work.

The ONLY reason it is an issue this year is because of the Uber thing…that happened years ago and came to light. And it wasn’t even a big deal so far as what he did. Unless you are a pimple-faced -butt-ugly virgin who has never had women attracted to you, you’ve been groped or have groped without consent. Pretending such anger is justified is hypocritical at best.

Even if it were my own daughter, it would not have been a big deal. Why? Because he stopped when told to.

DJax wants Fitz to stay in because Fitz is less demanding. Fitz is humble, easy to manipulate. Jameis is more demanding, more in control of the team. Fitz won’t make DJax earn reps.

If DJax would have played so hard for Jameis, he’d have gotten the big plays. James had no problem connecting with and other WR. Only DJax.

And it has absolutely nothing to do with accuracy. It has to do with touch. Jameis throws bullets, Fitz throws soft. Soft passes are easier to catch. Jameis is more energetic, Fitz is old and slow, so plays have time to develop.

But, the real reason Fitz is doing so well?

This incarnation of the offensive line is working. People pick out a few plays per game and claim that Caleb is struggling, but those are only a few plays. Experience will improve that. Fitz has had all day to throw, even when blitzed (first play against Eagles was a blitz). Oline is playing lights-out.

That won’t change when Winston comes back.

Start Winston, even if Fitz is undefeated. At most, give him game 4 in such a case. But Winston must return after the bye at the latest. The wins will still be there.

And Fitz won’t beat the Steelers.

  33. martinii Says:

So far I have read opinions ranging from trade Jameis, Jameis should sit back and wait his turn, Fitz has a hot hand, Jameis like Mike more Than he does Djax, if Fitz didn’t make mistakes he would be the starter ad nauseam. Only winning can become a distraction in Tampa. We have lost so much that we live in a negative, what if world. The Eagles will go back to Carson Wentz despite Noles SB MVP. There is Historicaly a president that a designated starters deserves the right to return to his position after a injury in this case a suspension. If he performs poorly his back-up will move up. It has nothing to do with hurt feelings, who likes who, or win/loss stats. Winston has the right to Start after his suspension. I love the Fitz phenomena and love winning, but I respect Jameis’s right to regain his position. He is the future of this team until someone beats him out.

  34. Buchead5588 Says:

Winston is the Starting QB start him after The Bye Week let him come back and get acclimated back into the daily football life with the way the bears are playing right now we could easily be 2-2 after the bye don’t hope so but could be

  35. Casual Observer Says:

DJax is smart. Play the winner is a good strategy.

  36. Defense Rules Says:

@Bonzai … “DJax wants Fitz to stay in because Fitz is less demanding. Fitz is humble, easy to manipulate. Jameis is more demanding, more in control of the team. Fitz won’t make DJax earn reps.” Easy to manipulate? Jameis is more demanding? More in control of the team? Wow Bonzai, I know you said before that you write, but you never said it was COMEDY? Now I’ll have to read some of your other stuff.

  37. Anonymous Says:

I love the magic in this team, understanding if we go 3-0 you have to play Fitz week 4, but after the buy week you put your starter back in the game. This play calling thing is what it is, THE DIFFERENCE!!! With Koetter calling the plays we were a run first O, now we throw the ball all over the field. So who’s to say Winston wouldn’t be lights out right now. It’s a tough decision because you put more pressure on Winston that’s not needed if you play him

  38. NewTampaChris Says:

I watched the interview. DJax was very matter of fact about it: “Fitz is on fire, how can you take him out?” The guy is one of the clear Top 2 for MVP; how CAN you take him out?

History says that it will not last. So let’s enjoy the ride while Winston gets some practice reps under his belt.

  39. LargoBuc Says:

Bonzai if Fitz was only locked on to DJax and it was costing the team, then I would be concerned. But Fitz is spreading the ball around. He is in perfect timing with the skill players and linemen. Why would we disrupt something that is working? Just to please Jameis? Do you believe the offense will be as good or better with Jameis under center? I have always supported Jameis and still think he is the future, but as long as we have the offense running like clock work, it would benefit everybody for Jameis to sit back and watch how a veteran runs this offense.

  40. 813bucboi Says:

yeah, Winston is the future, but you cant take fitz out until he flames out…..Winston has been supportive of the teams success….at this point, he has to be a team guy…..nothing new to him….he sat behind ej manuel and red shirted even tho he was more talented…..it is what it is….

    #TUNNELVISION!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!!

  41. markbennett98@yahoo.com Says:

Riding the bench for a while didn’t hurt AR. It depends what you do with the time…working on mechanics ad such, watching tons of film, and preparing for your return in even a stronger state.

  42. YoungBucs Says:

What happens if Jameis is just handed back reigns and stinks it up? I can almost guarantee the team will question the coaches decision making and evaluation skills and I’m not saying the offense will give up but that defense who’ll be out there the entire game will lose all confidence I’ve seen this happen over and over and then the Jameis defenders will cry it’s the coaches it fault never fails

    _____________________________________________________________

You’re right Bonzai. It is media driven. The players are publically stating they want Fitz to stay the starter as long as he’s playing well. The coaches and GM have all publically stated it’s not a given Winston is the starter when he gets back. So I guess you’re right….there is no controversy, it’s Fitz’s job until he loses it.

Winston should sit for now but I think both quarterbacks would have success this year, both of them were less than average last year with dork calling plays, Winston would be better when playcalling not so predictable like running the ball on every single first down of every game.

People are saying fitz is better than Winston but how about Todd Monken is proving he’s a better place caller than Dirk Koetter

  56. YoungBucs Says:

After that, if JW can put the ball on the money like Fitz, and not turn the ball over, then maybe.

To me that’s a big IF.

  62. Godeep66 Says:

Mock me all you like. Time usually proves me right, and when it doesn’t I eat crow. Gladly.

    NJBucsFan,

The Steelers and Buccaneers have played one another 10 times. How many of those games did the bucs win?

    2.

I’d say the Bucs have a bad record against them. I’d take a win and be happy with it, but I do not expect it.

Isn’t it is funny when objectivity makes one a hater? I’m probably one of the biggest homers on this website. I don’t turn on the team. Ever. My fandom is not dependent on wins or losses. You can search my history here. Never have I turned on the team.

People have mocked me because I choose to support the team and coaches, even when times are rough.

But let’s go through the considerations here:

    • Fitpatrick has a history of just doing enough to earn a new contract, then bombing.

    • Has a history of holding out for more money.

    • He turns 36 in November

    • Last year, no one raised a stink when Jameis started after Fitzpatrick went 2-1 filling in for him…even though Winston was injured and had a fumble issue.

    • If not for the Uber thing, this would not even be a discussion, even if Fitz has a hot hand. Winston would come in regardless after the bye week.

    • People saw what Foles somehow managed to do last year, and have convinced themselves Fitzpatrick can do the same. Always trying to be the last guy, never trying to be the first guy.

    • Let’s assume for a moment that Fitzpatrick stays in while hot. How many losses is good enough to make the switch? One? Two? When is enough enough? And where will keeping him in really get us?

    • The assumption that the Buccaneers will not win with Winston in there is just that: an assumption. If Matt Ryan were out three games and his backup won 2 of them, do you think Matt Ryan would sit when he came back? No. When a team commits to a franchise QB, they stick with him until they no longer can.

    • This off season, there were people here claiming Jameis Winston has not shown improvement from year to year. This is untrue. He has actually improved annually in every year except for one category. Turnovers. His fumbles last year went up because of horrible offensive line play. The sacks were high. I’m sure his injury had something to do with it as well.

Want proof? Last year, Ryan Fitzpatrick was sacked 2.3 times per game. Winston was sacked 2.5 times per game. Matt Ryan? 1.3 times per game.

This year? The offensive line is only allowing 1.0 sacks per game.

The offensive line is the complete reason for the bad year last year and the good year this year. Not the quarterback. Winston can do just as well, or better, than Fitzpatrick.

  66. NPR SageBoy Says:

    Jameis who?

  67. Jmarkbuc Says:

    @Bonzai

Your take on Djax and Fitz is whack…

DJax likes Fitz because he throws him touchdowns. I like him for that too.

  68. BucFamous Says:

This is exactly what everyone is thinking–you go with the hot hand. It’s not rocket science.

It is also not rocket science to realize the at Fitz’s age, and with his past resume, this streak will not go on for the whole season. Even if it does, his body isn’t going to last much longer than past this season, and then we have a 24 year old QB who has shown he can be amazing right behind him.

    Things are sunny in Tampa.

  69. NJBucsFan Says:

@Bonzai – since the Bucs only play once every four years the series history has no bearing on this game, but if you want to play that the Bucs won the most recent match up…get this….with the QB that was a “back up”….Mike Glennon.

    • This off season, there were people here claiming Jameis Winston has not shown improvement from year to year. This is untrue. He has actually improved annually in every year except for one category. Turnovers.
    —————————————————————————————
Here is the most important category that Winston has NOT improved: scoring!
Despite all of the “weapons for Winston”, the offense averaged ~ 8ppg in the first half of games. Despite all of the “weapons for Winston”, the offense with JW3 averaged barely 18+ ppg!!

Even MG8 averaged 19.5 ppg during his rookie year! And before everyone says that the lack of a good rushing attack limited the offense last year, look at the rushing game stats for this year (155 total yards for a 2.7 ypc average). The defense has given up almost 900 total yards in two games, but the Bucs somehow won both. The answers lies in many factors, but Fitzmagic is the most responsible by far. How many throws are perfectly on target, right in stride? How many throws have been into double or triple coverage? How many turnovers is Fitzpatrick responsible for? Yes, Jameis won the last game against NO last year, but please rewatch the game, and see that JW3 threw two more passes right to the defender(dropped), in addition to the THREE INTs they did manage to catch that game.

I hope Fitzpatrick keeps playing lights out and if he gives the team the best chance of winning keep riding him. If his success continues no one on the offense will be pushing for a JW return. These receivers love making big plays and in 2 games we’ve gotten more big plays than we did entire season last year.

If Bucs average 28 points per game or more this will be the best offense in the teams history and a playoff spot or divisional title will be in the cards.

There is optimism that we haven’t had in years here so I would love the story to be about all these playmakers like DJax, Howard, Evans and Godwin rather than about Winston or the forgotten ones, Brate and Humphreys who can’t get on the field because they don’t make the plays the guys in front of them have.

Jameis has never had an OL like we have now. The OL was the surprise element for the fleagles according to their D.

  74. Bucsfanman Says:

1sparkybuc- While I agree the o-line has played extremely well, it is essentially the same unit from last year other than Jensen. Making quick, smart decisions along with better play-calling have attributed to Fizy’s success as well. Don’t you agree?

  75. Phillip Says:

Sorry Bonzai but you sir are a jack@$$

First off acting like you would be okay with your daughter getting groped is just disgusting. Who cares if anything more happened how could you be okay with it in the first place?

Also, Fitz didn’t play as good last year as he is this year(let’s not kid ourselves it’s him and Patty Mahomes for MVP after 2 weeks). Bucs and Steelers are not a rivalry or even a conference game so why on earth does win-loss matter? Have the Bucs not changed numerous players each season and were on a coaching merry go around since Gruden left? D-Jax can manipulate players but JW didn’t force feed Mike Evans to get him to 1k last year? Sure sounds like a double standard. Jameis throws bullets so they are harder to catch? LMAO, we are talking about top 10 in terms of NFL toys in the pass-catching department but can’t catch bullet passes lol okay. His passes are harder to catch when they are no where near the player. Fitz has been taking what the defense has been giving him and Jameis has never been that type of player as he will hold onto the ball and try for the big play option over sometimes the RIGHT option.
