The Way It Was Supposed To Be

September 9th, 2018

Dominant

Joe couldn’t help watching today’s glorious victory and thinking how the unstoppable aerial assault from DeSean Jackson and Mike Evans is exactly what should have been happening last year.

Did Jackson just need a year in the offense? Was it Jameis?

It doesn’t matter now, but Joe does not think the 293 combined yards and three touchdowns from these receiver beasts was any kind of coincidence today.

All offseason, Dirk Koetter said the film said Jackson was opened last season but the Bucs didn’t get him the ball. Well, Ryan Fitzpatrick sure did today.

Jackson got beat up, and left late with a concussion (looked like he wouldn’t cooperate with doctors and resisted the concussion protocol testing before breaking down), but the damage was done: five catches for 146 yards and two TDs. For the math challenged that’s 29 yards a catch.

This is what it was supposed to be; two true No. 1 receivers complementing each other and forcing 1-on-1 matchups that would favor the Bucs nearly every time.

It can be that simple, especially with all the other weapons on this loaded offense.

Hopefully, Jackson’s brain is ready for next week — and hopefully Todd Monken and Dirk Koetter keep their foot on the gas until somebody slows them down.

‘Just’ have to keep drawing it up and have a fresh game plan each week.

On both sides of the ball.

  2. Doctor Stroud Says:

Godwin played great, too! What’s scary is that the offense left more points on the field with the long gain by Hump at the end of the first half, the first drive of the second half, and the missed throw to Godwin in the 3rd quarter for what would have been an easy TD. Match up problems, indeed!

  3. Dan Says:

It was Jameis. These guys could have done this last year. Thank goodness they have a chance to now. Let’s hope the Bucs don’t force Winston on us.

  4. Rod Munch Says:

I don’t know Joe, those run up the middles on every first down in the first half, that’s what real teams, they sign big name WRs to big deals and then run it up the middle to PROVE they’re real men! R.I.P. Sideline Dirk #2016-2017

  5. thunderchunkyPA Says:

I loved seeing everyone involved. Still need a productive run game from Barber, and the D needs to keep getting better. That was so awesome to watch.

  6. Mort Says:

And this is before you factor in Cam Brate and O.J. Howard. This offense can be elite. It was good to see it on the field today. And the O-line was a tough group of SOBs today as well.

  7. Evo2706 Says:

They took their foot off the gas today. Everyone knew barber was getting the ball that second to last drive. Yet they kept feeding it to him. Running into a 9 man front. A slant and go route would’ve put the game back out of reach I think. Lets hope they learned from this.

  8. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

I don’t think there’s a better top four WR group and top two TE group in the league. That being said, we need the front and back end of the D to improve. Hopefully, Jameis was really studying Fitz today. He put on a clinic!

  9. JimBuc2 Says:

It was war in the trenches and our Oline punched the Saint defense in the mouth. ‘You like that?!’ I loved it! Go Bucs and get ready for a much nastier Jim Schwartz defensive front. Bring it!

  10. Jaycee Says:

UThe national pundits are going to say “what happened to the Saints defense?”, when they should be saying, “the Bucs offense looks damn good”

  11. Pryda... sec147 Says:

Kicker needs to make those kicks!!! 44yards damn also this is 100% Jameis team Fitz had to run so many times smart better than trying to force passes risk int can’t wait for Jameis to Grab hold of this offense

  12. Skipper Says:

@ Dan, did you watch any preseason games? Winston was on fire this preseason, Fitz and Grif also played well. Fitz probably had the best game of his career, a great game. The journeyman is 35 years old and is not the future. I have no doubt Winston would have performed well too, this Bucs team is loaded with offensive weapons.

  13. Buc1987 Says:

Been telling non-Buc fans all summer…that this team is loaded with targets to throw to.

Of course they dismissed me as just another homer….

    Loaded.

  14. Buc50 Says:

Lots of Jameis haters here but Jameis was lighting it up in preaseason as well. I thin the playcalling and talent was huge today.

  15. Buc1987 Says:

Just had a thought to the days of VJax…and if he went down…there was not much behind him.

  16. Bucnut2 Says:

Just to inject seem facts here. Jamies had the 3rd highest QB rating on the BUCS this pre-season. BOTH Ryan’s had better ratings.

  17. AJ Says:

Biggest differences is the play calling. Calling up those plays at the right time. And having a running game to pull those safeties in.

  18. BushidoEvans Says:

    #wherestmax? Lmao

  19. unbelievable Says:

Knew it was a concussion as soon as he hit the ground.

You see the way his arms were just stuck with his hands facing up while he laid there? Classic sign of being knocked out. Hopefully he’s cleared by next week.

As usual, you’re completely full of chit.

Jameis had the highest ranking in preseason out of any of the Bucs’ QBs. That means 1st highest, in case you needed that point explained.

  21. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

If Winston played this game, guaranteed bonehead mistakes and turnovers. That is his MO. Fitz plays with poise, makes smart decisions, and can actually hit the deep ball.

    FITZMAGIC!

  22. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Bucnut2 just wants Winston released. Winston could of had Fitzpatricks’ game today and he wouldn’t want him. He could win us 5 SBs in a row and Bucnut2 would want him gone. Bucnut2 isn’t happy about the win, just that Fitz played great. Allegations don’t mean squat, and if you think Fitz is a long term answer, you are delusional. Winston is still the future. Deal with it.

  23. Buc68 Says:

That’s the third or time I’ve seen Bucnuts lie about Winston’s preseason passer rating compared to our other QBs. Winston is the future but you ride Fitz as long as he’s hot. He’s a very streaky guy. That was the best performance I have seen from a Bucs OL in a long time!

  24. Jim Says:

The dogs bark but the caravan moves on. Today everyone at One Buc Place saw what an intelligent, poised, experienced QB could do, when working with the best receiver corps in the NFL

  25. rrsrq Says:

Where are all the trade D-Jax cheerleaders. Hopefully gone.

  26. Bad Eric Says:

Never seen Winston hit that many deep balls in one season. Not only did Fitz hit the deep ball, he hit them in stride. They didn’t have to reach out 3 feet or contort their body for a badly placed ball. Nope these were on the money and was business like when getting back in the huddle. To describe it in one word I’d have to say Professional.

  27. Dapostman Says:

It was the play calls at the right time. Every deep pass the safety was no where around. WR’s beat CB’s. Perfect time to call a deep pass and perfect execution by Fitz and the WR’s. Just missed that one to Godwin.

  28. BuccaneEric75 Says:

rrsrq, people who want DJax traded aren’t questioning his talent. Just like Fitzpatrick, one game doesn’t make you the future of this team. Fitz and DJax will most likely be gone after this season. The “cheerleaders” just want to get something for him before he walks. Is that ok?

  29. BringBucsBack Says:

Let’s see here. Every one of the many quarterbacks that Jackson has played with has been able to hit him on the deep ball, except for Jameis. EVERYONE!

Jameis can do everything physically that Fitz did today, save for the long ball. It is what’s going on between the ears and aggressive play-calling, that allowed Fitz too score 48 points today. Pretty sure Jameis would not have… This way every week? Probably not but, if Fitz is playing this well every week Jameis better certainly ride the bench until Fitz gives you a reasons to take him out!

That offense was phenomenal, today! Phenomenal!

  30. ElioT Says:

Let’s not forget about Hump and his ability to slice up field on quick outs and screens.

    Then you have the TEs…

    Loaded…

    Gotta keep this going.

  31. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Bringbackbucs, Fitz didn’t score 48 points today.

  32. LargoBuc Says:

As far as taking their foot off the gas, I mean they put up 48 points. How much gas could they have in the tank?

  33. BucNole Says:

Mix in a little more OJ and Im on board with you @Joe. . . . and can we please put Dj in the slot a little more???

  34. RODNEY J ALLEN Says:

Fitz wasnt hitting Jackson last year either in those 3 games. Dont think it was winston bit o line not letting QBs get set n timing right before they would have to run for their lifes. Fitz had all day to throw. Oline was great

  35. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Largo the offense put up 41 and ST lost out on 3 pts with the blocked fg. They tried running out the clock and instead NO put up 16 pts just like that. They had more than enough gas to score 62 pts. Like Warren Sapp or Keyshawn said you put your foot on their throats and don’t let up.

  36. Jeffbuc Says:

Bucnut I don’t know where you make your stats up but jameis has a 126 qbrating in preseason. Griffin had 105 and Fitzpatrick had 79. So keep telling lies to fit your agenda. I bet you are voting for the Indian Pocahontas in 2020. Why would you say that and I have seen you say that multiple times that they had better preseasons then jameis. And it isn’t even close. Jameis was 20 points better than his closest competitor. 46 better than Fitzpatrick. So really where did you get that info from. It took me 20 seconds to go google preseason stats and see you are lying big time

  37. Jeffbuc Says:

Bucnut just to inject some facts here you are dead wrong. For real I feel bad for you that you have to lie on a bucs fan website and thank people are going to believe you. Jameis clearly was the best bucs qb in the preseason and it wasn’t even close.

  38. Jeffbuc Says:

Buc nut Ryan Fitzpatrick didn’t even throw a td in the preseason.

  39. adam from ny Says:

what you saw today are the throws that jaboo can not make…he’s not good at going over the top of the defense like fitzie…he can make a lot of throws – but he can’t throw a nice bomb…

  40. adam from ny Says:

fitzie is cool calm and collected…like he’s been doing it forever…and he has…jaboo is an up and down emotional qb at this point in his career…he get’s high and low with every new scenario thrown his way during a game…he needs to start off by being more even keeled…more deadpan…more boring actually…lol…then he will be a great qb…a lot of great qb’s are boring af…but they handle their biz on the field…

jaboo prolly watched this game in amazement…in fact jaboo is prolly still not sleeping and keeps replaying the game over and over in his underwear like a psycho…

  42. Tom Says:

Come on now, Fritz has been with 7 other teams. In his 3 starts last year did he hit these guys on long passes??? NO! Why, because he’s generally an int machine. When has the running game and oline looked this good on ANY games JW has started? NEVER! Having time in the pocket for the play to develop is something JW never had… The oline seemed nasty against NO and I hope that spark remains. I also agree, ride Fitz as long as he’s hot….
