Charles Sims Goes To Injured Reserve

August 23rd, 2018

[UPDATE:] The regular season will start much later for Bucs running back Charles Sims.

On Thursday, Sims was placed on the injured reserve list.

The official Bucs release did not specify if Sims will be out for the year or be tagged to be eligible for return in Week 9.

Sims suffered his knee injury on the opening kickoff of the second preseason game at Tennessee. The Bucs have not been specific about what the injury is and injury reports do not begin until the regular season.

Per Spotrac.com, Sims, 27, was re-signed this spring for a 2018 base salary of $800,000 and a signing bonus of $200,000.

No running back was on the field more for the Buccaneers last year than Sims: 380 snaps.

[UPDATE:] For the Bucs to bring back Sims from injured reserve, he would have to make the final-53 man roster before the Bucs placed him on Injured Reserve with Return Designation. Joe is just speculating here, but it is possible the Bucs could negotiate an injury settlement whereby Sims could be brought back sooner than Week 9, which is when players with the return designation are allowed to hit the field.

Good thing we have a defense stretching speedster courtesy of the second round. Time for the rook to step up.
Glad to have Fitz in there to keep the composure of the O steady.

    Good move.

  4. AlteredEgo Says:

IMO…he’ll never suit up for the Bucs again…injury settlement down the road…

  5. 99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7 Says:

And sorry to hear about Sims. Always felt like his pads are consistently way too high, but man, never like to see someone on IR, especially in August. Good luck to the kid.

  6. Billy_43 Says:

Figured Shaun Wilson might not make the team with D Jax saying he is gonna do Punt Returns.

Now it is almost a guarantee!!

  7. TX Bucs fan Says:

Bring back Doug Martin! Kidding of course! Get that rook Shaun Wilson some work and lets see what he brings. May not have to sign anyone else.

  8. TonyC Says:

Charles Sims was inconsequential in my opinion

  9. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Poor Poor Poor Chris Sims…………(FLASHBACK)

    OOOOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I mean…..charles

  10. Joe Says:

Charles Sims led the Bucs last year in YAC — the entire team.

That says more than you may think.

  11. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

Leading a team in any category that consistently finishes in the basement and has not played in a meaningful game in nearly two decades is the pure definition of useless information. Almost as meaningless has pro bowls for career losers

  12. Fartman Says:

I didn’t think he was making the team anyways.

  13. 99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7 Says:

Means we missed our 9 routes, and swing passes to a back with too good a posture were more productive. Unfortunately for Sims (and the Bucs), Sims is replaceable.

  14. Pete Mitchell Says:

Man, everyone is quick to write this guy off. I’m not sayingvhe’s a starting three down feature back by any stretch, but as a change of pace/receiving threat he wasn’t bad.

“You can never have too many good football players.”

Well Charles Sims sure isn’t Marshall Faulk, but he is (was) a good football player.

  15. Bucsfanman Says:

I guess we’ll miss the Electric Boogaloo for a while!
    Get well Charles.

  16. Season Is Over Says:

No one saw this coming. Lol. Complete shock that they don’t have a legitimate NFL RB on the roster. They needed someone before Sims went down.

  17. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

The leage is more likely to contract before bucs sniff a playoff birth

  18. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Million dollars to rehab. Where do I sign?

  19. Wausa Says:

He has had a few flashes (Atlanta game two years ago) but overall he has been disappointing.

I think there was a high probability he was not going to make the roster.

This could work out better for him in that if the Bucs have an injury at the running back position they could bring back Sims.

  20. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Bucs do not have a legit NFL starting RB on the roster, licht is a joke of a GM and koetter odds on favorite to be first coach fired this year, licht passed on 10 nfl starting RBs in last 2 years, grabbed a TE, when it wasnt needed and passed on cook and this year d guice, 3-13

  21. Defense Rules Says:

Forget Shaun Wilson, now’s the time for Jason Licht to work some magic and sign an experienced bell-cow RB to complement Peyton Barber. if Barber goes down, do we really want our RB stable to be RoJo, Rodgers & Wilson? That’s a prescription for Bucs’ QBs to set yet another passing yards record and for us to end up with another 5-11 year (if we’re lucky), as well as for a complete change of coaching staff next year. No thanks. Sign a veteran RB, OLineman & CB pronto Jason or you’ll be looking for a job next year too.

  22. THETRUTH Says:

Bad for him but good for Bucs , this guy was going to dance in back files and get negative yards. His only play is screen pass and we can’t jeep roster spot for one play.

  23. Dan Says:

I agree our GM has done a terrible job and we are looking at 6-10 if we are lucky.

  24. Dave Pear Says:

passed on cook and this year d guice, 3-13
    Duthsty,

Cook missed 13 games last year due to injury and Guice will miss 16 games this year due to injury.
Can you imagine the hatred you dipsticks would be spewing if Licht had picked either one of those guys.

  25. NJBucsFan Says:

Sims is not coming back. He’ll be released with an injury settlement within 3 weeks.

  26. Waterboy Says:

Did he even get hit on the play? I watched it several times and the guy looked like he missed him.

  27. Lord Cornelius Says:

It may be just a subjective thing but I just hate the way he’s looked on the field every year recently. Just an awkard runner and a lot of his YAC were on screens with huge holes that any back would have succeeded with so I’m not sure I buy it that much.

I like the combo of Barber/Rodgers/Rojo/Wilson

In that order too until Rojo can show more.

But he really has been completely f*cked on most all of his carries so far in the preseason. Not one big hole yet.

I’ve done my own breakdowns but Pewterreport matched mine in a recent feature as well- in that there were maybe just a couple runs he could have gotten more than he did; and nothing significant. Yeah he’s looked tentative but I would too if I was being hit in the backfield on most all of my first NFL carries.

Get him work running behind Ali/Jensen. Get him a look on a pass where he’s not going to be destroyed as soon as he catches the ball. Pretty sure we’d see different results.

  28. D-Rome Says:

That’s really too bad. I believe that Charles Sims, when used properly, could have been as effective as Christain McCaffrey is for the Panthers. His career is over with the Bucs.

  29. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Dave Pear, your joking right, god didnt say hey cook/guice you are gonna get hurt no matter where you are, gtfoh, licht is a garbage gm running a dumpster team, hopefully next gm & scouting dept drafts football players like d cook a stud from miami and/or d guice or 5 rbs last year, but you go w licht who took an all pro K in rd 2 & all pro corner w top 15 pick

  30. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This is the reason why you need multiple RBs…..it is possible Sims wouldn’t have made the 53….he was brought back after not being picked up in FA….that should tell us something.
I hate it for Sims…..this could very seriously impact his NFL career.
    Good luck Charles.

  31. Dooshlarue Says:

I’m sure gonna miss all that Speed in Space.
At least we still kinda have the Dunkaneers!

  32. Godeep66 Says:

Cut him. He was never healthy or good

  33. SOEbuc Says:

I say let him take the long walk. He has always had great hands and can break through a hole every once in a while but I’m thinking Barber and RoJo are gonna be getting a lot more carries this year, not to mention Quizz. We got a lot of young talent and it will open up a roster spot for this already banged up team.

  34. Greg Says:

We need running back help anyways. Someone over 225 that can run hard and pick up 1st downs and goal line carries please!!! Tired of soft running backs.

  35. Pickgrin Says:

Sims now has what? One year out of Five that he stayed healthy and available all year???

Its time to see what Wilson has. He pretty much just got a guaranteed spot on the final 53 as long as he handles his assignments reasonably well in the final 2 pre-season games…

  36. Owlykat Says:

Greg, we already have that back in Ogunbowale who has shown good speed in running back kicks and he is muscular and heavy enough to open his own holes. That is who we need backing up Peyton Barber if he goes down. He has not gotten enough carries to show what he can do since Jones and Wilson are getting more carries.

  37. Jerry Wicky Says:

are some of you pining for Wilson? really? you say that and your opinion immediately is garbage. Barber looks alright and rojo looks like crap and quiz is consistent….for 3 yds. pull off your rainbow colored glasses and realize Light is horrible.

  38. Tampabaybucfan Says:

How ’bout we check out Mike James (sort of kidding)…..but James always seemed to get positive yardage out of nothing….he ran so hard he kept hurting himself.

  39. Bucsfan951 Says:

    “Hold me closer, Tiny Dancer”

  40. Dewey Selmon Says:

I was goin to mention Dare, owl beat me to it. If they PS him I would create a jumbo package, Aclair blocking for Cross. lol

  41. SOEbuc Says:

    Owlykat

I like Ogunbowale, also. He has shown ability and we should have two larger runners compared to three smaller ones, including two rookies that haven’t shown diddly yet. Ogunbowale is also a rookie but he’s shown his talent and masculinity.

  42. JabooBuc Says:

Joe, you have got to do something about quality control on this site. So many idiots…

  43. SOEbuc Says:

    @Joe or Anyone with info

Were Ali and Justin Evans both practicing in full on this last day of TC??? Anything noticeable about they’re play??? You know if they’re playing full on Friday???

  44. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Shaun Wilson just became the next man up.

And as to DJax doingcreturns? Won’t actually happen.

  45. Owlykat Says:

Thanks SOEbuc, Ogunbowale ran a 4.38 40 at the combine and had a 5 yards a carry average his last year at Wisconsin. Moreover, he can even catch passes; no problem! He started out as a CB at Wisconsin before they moved him to RB; so if we lose too many CBs, he could help out there too. With his build you know he can jam a receiver. On top of that with his speed he should help on Special Teams getting down field quick and blocking for a RB. Wouldn’t make a bad third down back either. Just saying! I think Licht did his homework picking him for us. Licht can’t help he isn’t getting enough reps at RB. We can’t afford paying a bunch of money now for Free Agents. They would not have time to even learn our playbook now.

  46. D1 Says:

    SOEBUCS,

Dare O is not a rookie. He was on the practice squad last year. Briefly on it that is. Played a couple games for the skins.

  47. SOEbuc Says:

My bad D1. I thought we might have gotten lucky again with another good UDFA.

  48. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Trade a conditional 2019 7th Round Pick to Detroit – for RB Ameer Abdullah

Note: Ameer Abdullah lead the NFL in Kick Return Yards 1077yds.

  49. D1 Says:

    SOEBUC,

I agree that this is a good pickup. You are correct to say he is a udfa. I believe, I’m not certain, he was signed originally by Houston as a udfa.

  50. D1 Says:

    SOEBUC,

Correction on my part, FA is correct.

  51. SOEbuc Says:

    D1

Well whatever the hell he is, I like him. I couldn’t find any NFL film but I was just watching his U of Wisc. highlights and they were nice (but so are RoJo’s). He has hands and is able to get through holes. Looks like Simms except he runs more with his shoulders down and has better looking feet work. Like I said, college highlights.

  52. gilhealy Says:

Man, I hate to say it, but ‘Quizz may be gettin’ concerned as well. Ogunbowale may stick with Wilson. I really like Quizz’s attitude. But it’s about talent and production. Those 4 should do the trick.

  53. diggler Says:

shoot our, only good, blocking RB. This is gonna hurt

  54. Jeffbuc Says:

Owlykat I don’t know where you Ogunbowale 40 time from but he ran a 4.65 according to nfl.com draft profile. They say he lacks speed to succeed in the nfl. He will be a back if he averages 4 yards per carry his long will be 12.

  55. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Ogunbowale ran a 4.38 40 at the combine

Not finding that anywhere…..looks like some “fake news” to me…

    Someone please clarify….

  56. Daniel Says:

Charles Sims is still not good at football

  57. SteveK Says:

Poor Simms. Solid role player. Good pass pro and good receiver. Not Matt forte, but a keeper nonetheless.

Ronald Jones, we need you buddy! You got this, just relax and get in the film room. It will come. Take what you can get and keep the chains moving. Your opportunity to break a long one will come, don’t press.

Jones is pressing, much like a hitter can do in baseball. He’s going to be good, just needs to have the game slow down a little for him.

The #2 on a team that hasn’t had a good running game for a while. Change it up. Let Cross be a FB on first and second down run plays. He’s played in very few games but I always remember him setting up big holes. Usually inside the 10 for the TD.

  59. SOEbuc Says:

    SteveK

I would love to RoJo break a long TD tomorrow night against the starters. That would be such a gigantic boulder off his back.

  60. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

People are acting like Sims is a great loss…he was third string at best.

You don’t trade picks away to replace a third stringer!

  61. Kobe Faker Says:

Keep your eyes on Josh Adams on tonights game…

We can trade for him for a 4th rounder

    Kobe Faker

  62. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

All this means is that the Bucs can keep an extra TE and move him to FB where he belongs. Maybe they’ll even put him to work at his native position.

  63. Tampabaybucfan Says:

No reason why Rodgers won’t get more work on third downs…..he is quite capable as we’ve seen…..Would love to have a fullback who can run like Tolbert….

  64. Rod Munch Says:

This is a big loss, Sims is an excellent 3rd down back, a good pass blocker and a fantastic receiver for a RB. Rodgers can take over that roll, but he’s not as good as Sims is in that role. Disappointing news, I hope he makes it back sooner rather than later.

  65. Bobby M. Says:

It was bound to happen to one of the RBs…..Unless an opponent picks him up for intel, i think he’ll be available later in the season if we need him.

Its another opportunity for Barber to shine…..If he avoids injury, i think he’s going to show the team he’s an every down back and Rojo will be the new/more dynamic version of Charles Sims who comes in as relief for Barber and presents a different speed for the defense. Shaun Wilson could also end up in that role….position is up for grabs now with the young guys.

^^^would love to see Cross get more playing time. You could trust Simms on 3rd down to pick up blitzes, not in Cross’ skill set unfotunately.

  67. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

No team needs intel to beat bucs. that is hilarious though

  71. feelthepewterpower Says:

  72. BucNole Says:

Ogunbowale is 3 lbs lighter than Rojo. . . . he is not a big powerful back
    5′ 10″ – 205lbs

  73. TOM Says:

I like Ogunbowale over Rogers. That’s my two cents worth.

  74. unbelievable Says:

called that chit during the game.

So now we have zero running back that can actually catch the ball. Perfect, lol.
