RoJo Gets An Early Review By Dirk Koetter

August 9th, 2018

Mixed reviews from the head coach

You saw rookie RB Ronald Jones score his first professional touchdown run tonight, a two-yarder after left tackle Michael Liedtke blew a hole open for him.

And you saw Jones flash his KY hands with a bad drop.

So what did Dirk Koetter see?

Well, it seemed Koetter saw lost chances.

The head coach, who may or may not have reviewed film at halftime, chimed in to the Buccaneers Radio Network as the team ran onto the field for the second half.

Koetter liked the Jones touchdown run but was wanting more.

“I thought RoJo tailed off a little bit at the end. He had a couple of opportunities,” Koetter said.

Look, Joe’s just happy Jones got out of the game healthy and got his feet wet. Joe’s not down on Jones at all. What Jones did tonight is sort of what he’s done all spring and summer: a little flash with a side of ugh.

Spot on all summer on Jones, Joes. Flashed some speed and a great cut on the TD but didn’t do much at all

  2. DSmith Says:

    Another drop

ive seen ROJO take dump offs from Darnold and turn them into 40 yd TD’s within the blink of an eye. Im not worried about ROJO at all. That drop was more like a rookie hearing footsteps and turning his head around before catching the ball. he will be fine.

8 rushes for 9 yards and a 1.1ypc average is now considered tailing off at the end? Even Barber averaged 2ypc most games last year.

He’ll be fine Almond all box look good one soft spot I would say it would be Ryan Smith but I didn’t know all the coverages so I can’t say all of it was on him but at least you got a pic at the end of the game maybe that’ll boost his confidence

  6. Proudbucsfan Says:

I noticed when RoJo gets tackled he stops his legs from moving, it cost him extra yards all night. What’s odd to me is when I watch his college film he kept em churning. Why has it changed for him ?

  7. Trench War Says:

I wonder if the fact he knows he’s the backup to Barber with no chance as the starter has him playing with average effort? If he knew he had an equal chance as starter would he be giving maximum effort then? I don’t think he would be doing it on purpose but rather through complacency.

  8. Tampaspicer Says:

Tonight he didn’t explode through the hole like he did in college.

  9. SteelStudBuc Says:

Probably just getting used to pro game still. Players like him improve as they get more playing time.

  10. Anonymous Says:

He’s exactly what we thought he would be — soft. Goes down on first contact. Excels against the cupcake defenses (PAC 10 and Western Mich) and struggles against good defenses (ND, OSU, TX). I don’t expect much from him.

Do you have a mouse in your pocket?

Glad you have written him off after 1 preseason game.

  12. Cobraboy Says:

Jones made a couple of “WOW!” cuts last night, something that cannot be coached.

Dude is a liability as a blocker & receiver. THOSE, hopefully, can be coached-up.

lol at the analysis here… Did you guys even watch anything?

Go watch all his runs – here’s a link if Joe wants to keep it

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srFqvoKaYjU

Play 1 – the dropped pass. Bad drop. Meaningless drop given it was 3rd and 16 and a guy was lighting him up as soon as he touched the ball on a dump pass but still.

Play 2 – makes 1 cut to avoid one tackler and pushes up field; getting hit around his legs just 2 yards past the LOS (freeze it at the :16 mark if needed); and he keeps his legs moving and gets another 4 yards for a 6 yard gain.

*So yes – he knows how to keep his legs moving…….

Play 3 – goal line run from the 3 that is stuffed/blown up for 1 yard gain
Play 4 – successful cut on a well blocked play for a TD
Play 5 – run to the left outside – gets hit by a tackler trying to wrap him up 4 yards behind the line – breaks the tackle and dives between 3 defenders to get back to the LOS (should have been -4 yards but was 0)
Play 6 – O-line is destroyed lol. I have it paused at 0:47 and 2 of our lineman are on the ground immediately. He is hit from behind and in his grill 1 yard behind the LOS.
Play 7 – Draw play where OT Seaten is completely beaten off the snap and the DE starts hitting Rojo at the LOS for what ends up being a fall forward 3 yard gain.
Play 8 – 3rd and 3 with no time left at half – this looks like the only play so far where there may have actually been potential for more if he read what was happening and cut it left. THe run doesn’t seem designed to go that way but there was potential for a cut back the other way.
Play 9 – He’s hit by 3 different dolphin players at the LOS

So of the 9 plays – 1 dropped pass and 1 run where maybe there was more to get if he cut it back and didn’t follow the play – in terms of plays I would critique.

The other 7 plays – 2 were goal line runs; and 1 was a well blocked solid 6 yard gain; and 4 plays were just the O-line getting absolutely destroyed – primarily on the right side with our 5th string OT and whoever was at C/RG by that point
