Get Ryan Smith Off The Field

August 9th, 2018

Dreadful.

Until or unless Bucs embattled cornerback Ryan Smith gets coached up, he’s going to cost someone or some people their jobs.

Right now Smith is quickly approaching Myron Lewis country. At best he is a liability. At worst he’s an automatic first down for whatever receiver he’s trying to cover.

Smith started Thursday night against the Dolphins in Miami because Brent Grimes is out with an injury and Vernon Hargreaves was playing in the slot position (until he suffered a groin injury). It didn’t take long for the immortal Ryan Tannehill to figure out he needs to throw at Smith.

Pass after pass went Smith’s way and they were completion after completion. Tannehill and the Dolphins targeted Smith like Joe does a cold beer on a summer Saturday afternoon.

It was a repeat of last year when Smith got beat. Game after game. This time Julio Jones was nowhere in the stadium.

And naturally, Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith had Ryan Smith give receivers cushions so deep, Ryan Smith was damn near standing on South Beach.

The one time Mike Smith had Ryan Smith play press and up close on the line of scrimmage, nearly in the face of the receiver he was supposed to cover, the pass play was incomplete.

Coincidence?

Carlton Davis didn’t look too shabby for his very first NFL game. But Smith? He was terrible.

To be fair, Smith recovered a fumble when Miami receiver Kalen Ballage simply threw the ball on the ground as if he got a call from his bookie in Newark, and Smith made a nice tackle from behind of Miami running back Senorise Perry.

If the Bucs have to rely on Ryan Smith to cover wide receivers, the offense better be humming because the only way the Bucs are going to win that game is in a shootout.

PREACH! Let David start, he can’t be any worse

  3. Walkergodeep Says:

He’s trash how the coaches don’t see this

  4. Bucs3 Says:

Thought Ryan Smith was the guy that got hurdled on that fumble

  5. Logan Pounders Says:

Was Isiah johnson with the recovery.

  6. Mike Says:

Typical jbf. Write articles like this and don’t have the cajones to put the authors name on it.
Typical nonsense. Joe has had the same style here for 11 seasons and 35,000 posts. Joe is in the locker room as credentialed media and has no problem facing the music from a player. Joe is not in hiding behind a keyboard. –Joe

  7. Easy Says:

    @Bucs3

    He was lol

  8. BeLucid Says:

Isaiah Johnson recovered the fumble, not Smith.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Yes….lets take him off the field….but not until he gets an interception…..

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Hah! Ryan Smith save us the win! LOL!

    How does crow taste?

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Mike, do you even understand the premise of this website??? It’s JOE Bucs Fan.

    JOE. JOE. JOE.

If you can’t tell one Joe from the other, then it is your own fault, because I sure can.

  14. John Says:

Update… ryan smith gets game sealing int. Joe deletes article. Now ryan smith is a pro bowler in the making. Lmao

  15. Ndog Says:

For real this guy just can’t play period. If we didn’t have any other corners I get it but he is seriously like our 6th best corner.

  16. Pa Privateer Says:

I think they should leave him on the field and let him get more playing time if he is struggling.

Let us watch the next couple games to see the results

  17. Joe Says:

    BeLucid:

Per official stats in press box, Ryan Smith recovered the fumble. Unless that has changed since Joe left press box to get to the locker room (possible).

  18. Season Is Over Says:

    Hargreaves is hurt again?

  19. Red86 Says:

I don’t have to read this article to agree that Ryan Smith isn’t cutting it.

  20. Broy34 Says:

Idc if he had three picks against backups. He’s terrible.

  21. walkergodeep Says:

E.J Biggers was better than ryan smith

  22. rrsrq Says:

I think the PI he received was a terrible call, they both were hand fighting. Not sure if it is the scheme or what but why does he play so far off. Is that the defense or the player. I think he does play the run better especially since the defense line and the line backers were not tackling on the 2nd team, I know Vew and Beck are out but that depth was not impressive (Will Gholston)

  23. Bird Says:

Yah. I’ve seen enough. The coaches have too.

Time to replace him. Maybe on last cuts there is a guy out there. Shoot my 16 year old dog can cover better .

He can’t be trusted even as the 5th DB

  24. SOEbuc Says:

Smith was playing great coverage on that downfield pass the first drive on that PI call. Why doesn’t Goodell make it a rule that DBs can’t be within ten yards of WRs?? We’ll call it the Mike Smith scheme rule. Sucks guys can’t play good coverage anymore. But Whitehead and Carlton Davis were looking sharp and that made me happy cus I hadn’t heard much about them through camp.

  25. Bird Says:

    Dude.

    Bashaud breeland is out there

And could be had for 2-3 mil plus incentives

  26. Season Is Over Says:

If Hargreaves is hurt in lower body he will essentially be useless for half the season or more. Like most years. He has yet to be effective even when healthy so unless the two second round picks can beat out Smith it is going to be a long season. From strength to weakness in hours. I guess that is what happens when you rely on 35 year old corners to start.

  27. BucdUp Says:

Nice pic at the end tho

  28. Greg Says:

Holy crap!!! Greg agrees with Joe!!!! They were targeting him all night and he was not able to make a play at all. Both corners and safety the Bucs drafted looked outstanding. I was wondering if Joe would call out Smith. Elliot and Johnson also sucked tonight. Basically most of last years secondary.

  29. BigPoppaBuc Says:

All of the draft picks looked good tonight. I’m really liking Whitehead. I think once he gets settled in to the professional game he’ll be a playmaker. All of a sudden I feel better about the youth on the backend. Stewart, Davis, Whitehead all seem like raw talented football players.

  30. Trench War Says:

On the sunny side I thought our 3 rookie DB’s played pretty well for their first pro games.

  31. Ghastly Bucs Says:

Ryan Smith had some struggles, but he also forced a fumble and got an interception, yet he is awful? Am I missing something? What did the secondary do last year that we can measure Smith against?

  32. Ghastly Bucs Says:

Again, reading these comments, who was getting interceptions and forcing fumbles last year? Yeah, let’s not run off a guy that has done more than our secondary did last year.

  33. SteelStudBuc Says:

    @Ghastly
Watch the highlights… Watch Ryan Smith…
Smith misses coverage assignments, gets burned, poor footwork, and lost contain numerous times. Terrible.

  34. Ghastly Bucs Says:

    @Steel

I saw that, but again, that is no different than half the secondary. At least he was causing turnovers. That is more than what the other half can say. I don’t think it is just so simple to cut him.

  35. Buc1987 Says:

It was Jameis Winston’s fault…..ask Godeep69 and his bff Walter!

This guy was atrocious..BUT..he’s NOT in the NEWS…so THAT is a GOOD thing!

Ryan Smith is not a (ahem) distraction like…..well you know….who….

Having fun yet guys? Thanks….I’ll be HERE all SEASON long!

  36. Buc1987 Says:

BigPoppaBuc…they look solid…eh….let Licht settle in.

  37. Stanglassman Says:

That PI call was called the wrong way the hand checking was fine but the receiver clearly pushed off before the ball got there. I thought good they finally called it and couldn’t believe they called it on Smith.
It’s one preseason game I’ll withhold judgement til I see more.

  38. Not there yet Says:

Wonder how many more articles we will see about how these coaches can’t develop a comeback now. Davis looked good as a rookie and after yet another season under his best Ryan Smith looks exactly like he did last year. If you don’t have talent it doesn’t matter which coaching, if you have the talent it doesn’t matter who’s coaching

  39. Stanglassman Says:

Smith had a forced fumble and game ending INT.

  40. Defense Rules Says:

Was thinking exactly the same thing last night Joe … Ryan Smith isn’t cutting it at outside CB (although he was in on a LOT of tackles it looked like). Everything I’ve been reading this preseason has said that he’s gotten quite a bit better, but I sure didn’t see it last night. Davis & Stewart & Whitehead on the other hand all looked very good out there for their first NFL game.

Also wasn’t impressed though with the Bucs’ new pass rush. Other than GMC’s early sack I didn’t think the DLine looked that much better than last year. I know I know … it’s preseason, everything’s vanilla. Maybe so, but whooping the guy in front of you is kinda still the same. Miami’s OLine held their ground pretty well in that first qtr I thought.

  41. BucEmUp Says:

At one point he was completley out of my t.v screen

  42. AlteredEgo Says:

OK idiots…blaming his play on coaching….how come the 3 rookie DB’s all looked good ?
it has always been about the talent …both sides of the ball…SMH !

  43. Rod Munch Says:

I said this all last season and all offseason, Ryan Smith is literally the worst corner I’ve ever seen, ever. I’ve been watching the Bucs for well over 30 years, that’s a lot of losing teams, and I’ve never seen someone look as lost as Smith looks on 99% of his plays. The fact Ryan Smith started the game, and is still playing at the end of the game tells you everything about him. Also keep in mind last year, in the opening preseason game in Cinn, who started and ended the game, Ryan Smith? Preseason isn’t ironman football, if you’re starting, playing the entire game, and ending on the field, that says coaches think you have yet to figure it out and they’re trying to get you work.

    Just cut him, he’s awful.
