Buccaneers Release First Depth Chart
August 6th, 2018It’s an annual tradition. Before the first preseason game of the year, NFL clubs are required to issue an official but unofficial depth chart for the roster.
The Bucs did that this evening.
Head coaches usually love (sarcasm) when media interprets these charts as some form of gospel. Regardless, it’s there and there’s always something of note.
What Joe finds noteworthy is Vernon Hargreaves listed as the starting cornerback opposite Brent Grimes. And your starting defensive line shows Vinny Curry and Jason Pierre-Paul as ends, and Gerald McCoy and Beau Allen at tackle.
Isaiah Johnson is listed as a second-team safety ahead of rookie fourth-round pick Jordan Whitehead.
DeSean Jackson shows up on special teams, in addition to wide receiver, as the No. 2 punt returner to Adam Humphries. Joe doesn’t recall Dirk Koetter placing him on a depth chart there last year. Jacquizz Rodgers is your No. 1 kick returner.
Oh, and Jameis Winston is listed as the No. 1 quarterback.
The Bucs kickoff preseason on Thursday night on the road against Miami.

I’d prefer Shaun Wilson as our #1 kick returner. He’s more explosive than Rodgers
August 6th, 2018 at 5:19 pm
But where in the hell is Myron Lewis?
August 6th, 2018 at 5:34 pm
Wilson might not make the team, he is being hyped but I have counted 3 fumbles in TC so far.
August 6th, 2018 at 5:41 pm
But where is Karl “The Truth” Williams on the depth chart?
August 6th, 2018 at 5:50 pm
Who is the starting RB
August 6th, 2018 at 5:51 pm
Plus our offensive genius doesn’t like rookie RBs
August 6th, 2018 at 6:21 pm
I notice 6 WRs listed:
Evans, Godwin, Jackson, Wilson, Humphries & Martino…..
With Reedy on ST, that makes 7 WRs…..no place at this point for Rookie Justin Watson…..
We are so deep at WR…..one may have a “convenient” injury and end up on IR
August 6th, 2018 at 6:28 pm
Guzzie thats a shame on koetter & rookies and then jason gump passing on big time rbs last year and at least 2 that will be starting elsewhere
August 6th, 2018 at 6:32 pm
I wondered out loud in a recent comment why it seems the Bucs historically never used their #1 starters @ kick or punt return.

Put Desean Jackson and his big paycheck at return duty. Let these well paid studs multi task like they did 20 years ago. There used to be a day when teams used their number one’s to contribute on special teams, now they try to fill ST positions with only the backups. Backups are just that, backups.
Maybe the Bucs are listening?
August 6th, 2018 at 6:38 pm
Why do I seem to remember Bernard Reedy as a very effective kick returner?
If I remember this, why don’t the Bucs?
August 6th, 2018 at 6:42 pm
Hay Joe, will see you and Ira on Tues. for camp. Leaving Winter Park at 6am. Got some information for Ira for him, so see you on the morning, God Bless, David Corcoran, Winter Park.
August 6th, 2018 at 6:46 pm
Why is Americas groper #1 qb?what a joke!
August 6th, 2018 at 7:27 pm
They need to make room.for Watson

He is listed as the #2 KR

D Jax wants to return punts as much as he wants to play slot. I like Whitehead myself. I think Speedy Reedy is on the outside looking in with the drafting of Watson. I’m rooting for him though. That’s a good man right there.
August 6th, 2018 at 7:38 pm
I don’t think Jackson should be returning anything. If they want him to run, throw him the ball.
August 6th, 2018 at 7:38 pm
Make D-Jax do returns in some capacity…..dude is way more explosive then Hump or Rodgers. The Patriots are who they are year in….year out….because the coach positions the team to win. Players dont like it, he sends them packing. The objective is winning…not appeasing. Koetter seems to worry too much about taking care of unwritten roster rules….We are insanely deep at receiver….Put Jackson in the return game, if he gets hurt, Godwin will step in on offense….Hump will take over return duties. We needs WINS….If Jackson doesn’t like it, trade him.
August 6th, 2018 at 7:45 pm
Jeez, the ST are depressing. Rogers has to be the slowest kick returner in the NFL.
August 6th, 2018 at 7:51 pm
Hmmmmm.
August 6th, 2018 at 8:01 pm
I’m kind of excited about that D-Line. Think they will be the difference this year
August 6th, 2018 at 8:04 pm
6-10
August 6th, 2018 at 8:55 pm
I agree with Bobby M. Let DeSean return kicks dammit! We need wins!!!
August 6th, 2018 at 9:08 pm
Serious question though… with the new kickoff rules, does our return game matter more or less? Or is anyone back there just going to signal fair catch before anyone has to hit each other?
As for this idea that stars shouldn’t return kicks – Deion Sanders was far more valuable to his teams than DeSean Jackson AND could’ve run step for step with him at CB, so no excuses. There are no football plays where you can’t score, so players should play.
August 6th, 2018 at 9:17 pm
Don’t know why everyone thinks we’re getting 5 wins again. This defense is looks totally resurrected compared to last year and defense has more influence on W’s. Fitzpatrick did not look horrible last year and was 2 of 3 (realize it was NYJ and MIA). Don’t know why everyone already knows it’s a sure fact we’re gonna go 0-3. I understand why the dumbass national media does but real fans that keep up should know better and at least keep the faith.
August 6th, 2018 at 9:25 pm
^I would start DeSean all day at both KR/PR… Speed kills, kick the tires and pp roll!!!
August 6th, 2018 at 9:26 pm
Let’s roll*
August 6th, 2018 at 9:31 pm
Whitehead or Shaun Wilson need to be considered for returners for their college auccess alone.
Humphries is reliable but its not kick catcher, it is kick returner, so maybe put someone in with some return skills.
August 6th, 2018 at 9:38 pm
Bobo>Hump
Ty and gn
You know things are skewed when Hump is in over D-Jax and Reedy not to mention bobo but wtfdik. I’d even say Martino is a better wr than hump too but wtfdik.
August 6th, 2018 at 9:40 pm
No depth chart in pre season is accurate.
August 6th, 2018 at 10:16 pm
Anyone remember Dante Hall? The X-Factor. Now that was a fun guy to watch. We need one of those. Hump is a great 3rd receiver but if he is your number one returner, your special teams coach is slacking.
August 6th, 2018 at 10:40 pm
If Hump is so good maybe we can trade him to the patriots for a tackle. They just cut Malcolm Mitchell they’re current starters are Eric Decker and Chris Hogan.
August 6th, 2018 at 10:44 pm
Cont….
This trade would also alleviate any issues with Djax vs Godwin’s playing time. Idk about you but I’d rather have Evans Djax and Godwin as the starters but again wtfdik.
August 6th, 2018 at 10:58 pm
DB…wtfdik..WE need to hang out….more than you or I both know…

“Who is the starting RB”
That’s it go away. We’ve had a few fans question your fandom…but I went through the archives. You’re a MeToo fake. You’re not a Bucs fan. You’re a Jameis hater. Gawd get a life. I take that back…..tell me you are a new to the area fan..and I might get it. YOU know virtually NOTHING about OUR team or it’s past…. only that they need to get rid of Jameis Winston cause 3 yrs ago he grabbed a woman’s crotch. That’s my assessment of YOU!
So tell me you just became a Bucs fan and I MIGHT get it…

@SOE: Spot on
We are one or two solid late J. Licht o-line pickups (Hawley, Cherrilus(sp) away from being able to really push for our playoff run. I think they want to see some young guys first then will pounce again after cuts.
That said…
Im all for trading Hump but lets do it for a SAFTEY and really forrtify the backend. Hump + 2019 6th to Seahawks for Earl Thomas anyone????
August 7th, 2018 at 1:58 am
With all of the technology in football these days why is it saying there’s always a lot of hamstring injuries every year. is it just poor coaching poor physical conditioning or stupidity on the players part that these injuries keep happening? it seems It’s always a wide receiver, tight end or running back. Most notably to a high draft pick, starter or rookie. There must be a solution.

August 7th, 2018 at 11:16 am
@Buc1987: you need help snowflake. I am a true Bucs Fan for many years. It’s not my fault that we drafted a Criminole as the number one pick in the draft. His mental health/addictions are no different than any other repeat offender, he just happens to be able to throw a football well. He will crash and burn just like Amy other which job that does not get real help. The only problem is, he thinks there’s nothing wrong with him and that he is somehow above the law. On another point: how do you find time to go through archives? There are many available jobs that you should be applying. And stop watching CNN

LOL every year like clockwork, people freaking about the first depth chart, in preseason.
Preseason? We talking about preseason?
August 7th, 2018 at 4:50 pm
We need to trade Desean Jackson now, while we can! We need to be talking with the Dallas Cowboys, who are desperate for receivers and who have a ton of great O-linemen. New England may need receivers as well, but they don’t have much O-line depth, or starters to trade for currently. We need more Offensive tackle depth! Dotson is getting too old to stay healthy consistently.
