Discusses new tackling rule.
Bucs coach Dirk Koetter doesn’t seem overly concerned over the new tackling rule. But he predicted crises could arise implementing it.
Speaking yesterday after practice, Koetter seems to have a decent understanding of the new tackling rules the NFL approved of this past spring. But with anything else that is new, there may be some bumps in the road, Koetter predicted.
“We’ve seen all the videos,” Koetter said. “We’ve had the officials do the presentation. I only saw one of the calls in the game the other night, and the one I saw, I thought was a good call. The officiating crew that we had here said that they thought another one of those calls was 50/50, that not everybody would agree. I think there is definitely going to be some trial and error as both the officials and the players adjust to the rule.
“But, it is a rule now and it is something that we’re going to have to adjust to, just like any other rule. It’s for the players own good. It’s for the players’ safety. We just have to adjust, so we will see how they are going to call it.”
Is Joe the only guy scared as hell about this new rule? Look, Joe gets the goal of player safety. At least in college a shady tackle (known as “targeting”) is automatically a reviewable play.
Joe just fears that in a league that has demonstrated it doesn’t know what a catch is or know what forward progress is (or more importantly, isn’t) how are we as fans supposed to believe officials will be sure to know what a tackle is?
Remember the rare times since Chucky was jettisoned; the Bucs got hosed out of a playoff berth because of a botched judgment call.

There will be a lot of controversy this season. Watch toward the end of the season what teams are flagged the most? In fact, I will bet the teams who have losing records will reflect and represent the highest amount of spearing violations.

Just stop all the misery, no more tackling. Put flags in the players’ belts and work towards merging with the Pro Soccer leagues and call it Professional Pussy Football.

Call me cynical, but why do I envision a late flag against Justin Evans or one of our DB’s as an “illegal tackle” and the same hit in the same game officiated by the same crew by someone in an Eagles or Steelers jersey as a “just good, hard football” non-call?

Could not agree more.
It will be subjective.
It will change the outcomes of games.
It will cause drama.
And it will further diminish the game, which let’s be honest has been already declining for several years, in large part due to massive inconsistencies with the officiating from game to game, week to week.

All judgement calls are a pain. Refs have always been a part of the game we all like the least. This rule is not going to make them any more popular.

To me this new rule is just another way to put the outcome of a game in the hands of the officials and take it away from the players. There are way too many gray areas left to interpretation. Wait til one of the calls takes away a victory that eliminates a team from the playoffs! If this about the players safety, eliminate contact/tackling until high school age. Up until that age group the fundamentals, technique and conditioning can be the focus. The let all the teams keep (college too) keep rosters of 125 players and implement a maximum amount of plays per game that a player can play. After all it is not the tackle that is the enemy it is the repetition of the hits a player takes, especially to the head. This way there would be the ability for all out play by those on the field and another “chess match” dimension as to when players would be used, held back or matched up.

I don’t drive race cars because it’s dangerous and I could die. I don’t work on rooftops cause I could fall and die. I don’t do underwater welding cause I cold drown.
If you’re worried about concussions or head injuries don’t play football. Sell insurance.

I feel bad for the older players back in the day who didnt make that much and played a much rougher game. These guys deserve a settlement. A BIG one. Even though it’s common sense of you hit your head a bunch it will do damage.
But no, let’s make up for it by ruining the game as we know it today.
This is ridiculous. These guys get millions to accept the risk and we pay thousands to watch it. I don’t want to pay to watch flag football. You can’t take the occupational hazard away without profoundly changing the game. Its just part of the game and its a risk they accept and are compensated for.
Can you take the danger out of crabbing? No more boats?
Can you take the danger out of police officer? No more arresting people?
I mean really guys, it is part of the game! Let them bang, let them do what they grew up watching.
Pretty soon we will be left with a generation of football players that doesnt even know what the old style of football looked like and this unfortunately be our new norm.

I hear Elizabeth Warren is going to run for pres with the slogan “Make America Soft Again”. She claims to be American Indian…..must be Seminole.

Yes I realize 1 good hit to the noggin can cause a concussion. But it still is the repeated knocks to the noggin that presents the danger of permanent injury. “CTE” which is the killer of the brain is caused by the head constantly and repeatedly hit and concussed. Limit that exposure and the risk goes down. Sure this whole situation can be likened to the health nut VS the Junk food addict. The junk food addict is slowly killing him/her self with over indulging bad food intake. The health food nut is avoiding that exposure to the danger but could get run over by a bus crossing the road. So with the understanding “moderation is the key” limited exposure to concussions in the game of football is the only clear solution IMHO. Having more players on the roster to rotate and ban pre-adolescent exposure makes sense. Other than that fixing the games with rules like this new one (and wanting to ban kick offs) that destroy what the game is all about, will ultimately destroy the game!

What do you expect from the NFL when they p/o their base of paying customers and the people watching them on TV and think they can make up for that loss by targeting women. The buzz around the NFL this year is much much much lower than in previous years, and I don’t think it’s just related to the Bucs, I think it’s people fed up with the dope players with IQs in the low single digits pontificating about political issues, a sports media that thinks people want to hear those politics more than they want to watch the game (not you Joe), and the NFL continuing to water down the game. We shall see what happens once we get to the regular season and ratings start to hit. But so far it seems hype is just way down this year, from fantasy football to Madden, it seems like there isn’t all that much excitement, even the Eagles fans I know are not as excited about things as you’d expect.

Don’t like the rule but I’ll give it a shot. Plus I think our team will benefit big time from it. Just off the top my head I can think of a few plays last year this rule would have helped big time.

I have to admit that I was looking at the situation incorrectly. You’re right about the cte and it was not something I considered. I was looking at it too narrowly. A positional bias if you will. So I think that’s a good idea you proposed.

The need to add video replay on penalties (in my opinion only personal fouls) is becoming more and more obvious. Cancel out the time it would take with less TV timeouts. Which was a great call for the HoF game and was noticeable to me as a viewer.
