Is Jameis Winston a distraction? Joe assumes that for those with a severe case of ADD who have the attention span of a housefly on a caffeine buzz, he would be.
But is America’s Quarterback and his three-game sentence from NFL strongman Roger Goodell a distraction for the Bucs?
This was a question thrown at Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy yesterday after practice. And though GMC answered, Joe still isn’t sure where GMC stands.
GMC replied with a strange dance that he is going to work every day just like in years past, and then talked practice schedules and TV programming.
“We’ve had two practices,” GMC began. “In order to keep it from being a distraction, we’re going to come out tomorrow, put on shoulder pads and practice. We are going to have meetings and we are going to have a walk-through. Then go to sleep and we are going to do it the next day, and the next day, and the next day until we play Miami. Then we are going to have off days, then we are going to do it again and again until we go to Tennessee. And we are just going to keep doing it, and keep doing it like we always have done. Regularly scheduled programming.
“This is the NFL man. We just got to keep playing. It’s a blessing to be here, alright. It’s a privilege, not a right. We just have to keep being the same. Regularly scheduled programming.”
So GMC seems to be suggesting that you go to work each week and on Friday after work you stop at your favorite Hooters, have a couple of beers, go home, order a pizza, have a few more beers while watching “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” and “Live PD” and pass out. Then you fish and drink more beer the rest of the weekend, go to work the following week, rinse and repeat.
But is Jameis a distraction? GMC really didn’t say. In fact, he didn’t say at all.

It’s only a distraction when reporters make it a distraction. Like when reporters say they hope there is a QB controversy. ..c’mon man!

I could see it being a distraction to the offense, but not much. I think the offense (should) be comfortable enough with whichever qb is playing, but the defensive players should be focused on doing their jobs.
McCoy’s biggest distraction is probably wether he’s going to be considered expendable with a non-guaranteed contract looming, all the new additions to the d-line, and all the guys you’ve mentioned who need to get payed next year.
I hope he’s able to prove he’s still the top-dog of the d-line.

Players rarely ever throw a teammate under the bus in the media….It’s like an unwritten rule or bro code, but I can assure you guys with GMCs career and talent don’t like the spotlight focused off them…particularly for nonsense unrelated to football. They all have egos they thoroughly enjoy having stroked….They also have careers and families that might see big changes if this season is another dud because the “franchise QB” sabotaged it. That’s less then ideal. I get the sense veteran players have tuned Winston out and he knows it.

He knows the defense has to step up and GMC is chasing the greatest that ever played. There’s a lot at risk for his legacy. I have a feeling he steps up and leads, reluctant, but capable. We handed the keys to Jameis prematurely, and maybe GMC was given it too soon as well, but this would be a great time for GMC to step up and turn this ship around. I think he will

GMC answered the question perfectly Joe, and I didn’t see him suggesting anything in his response about Fridays, or Hooters, beers, ‘Diners, Drive-ins and Dives’ or fishing. Sounded a lot more like ‘we’re professionals & we’ll come to work every single day & we’ll wirk hard & practice hard until we get it right, then we’ll practice some more until the season starts.’ One day at a time, one game at a time. Sounds like the only ones getting distracted by Jameis ‘hassles’ are the media.

Then the media aka you “one of you especially ” who goes to each player and instead of asking a question about football or a question on how they’ve been doing personally. “…
It’s the same ,how is Jameis , how Is he handling this, how is his curves holding up, was he wearing boxers or briefs this morning when he came out of the shower.
What happened to covering the team. It’s getting pretty sad to the nenth degree. And it’s pretty obvious. But yah. We know … he moves the needle ?

And another issue that keeps coming up is leadership
Why does someone have to run their mouth all day and spew dhiarrhea out their pie hole to be considered a leader.
I’ve played sports for almost 40 years at a pretty decent level. I like the guys who lead by example … almost quiet to a certain extant but then go out and play like a bunch of crazed dogs with their hair on fire.
Not people who run their mouths and give lame rah rah speeches but are consistent enough to back it up

Well, bless your heart ❤️. Joe, take a hint. He said STFU as politely as he could. GMC and the rest of the players are tired of hearing the Media’s stupid questions about it. It’s only still an issue/distraction because your making it one. They want to focus on their game.
Look Joe, you’re the number 1 Buc site. If you let it fade into the background it will, and help the team. Damn dude, get over it and move on. This is exactly why so many people hate reporters and the media.
Just watch. Keep running your mouths about it at 1BP and one of them is going to bite your head off.

If you were a Buc’s player, how would you feel? Would you want to talk about football or this stupid bs? If you’re a fan of the team, do you want what is best for them? Do you think rubbing their faces in this crap continuously is going to help them in any way?

An honest question…not snark.
If you ran a Buc’s website and all of your stories on ONE topic drew 4 to 5 times and sometimes even more comments than ANY OTHER topic as a pure business decision wouldn’t you find it prudent to cover THAT story.
Guys, Jameis posts do not move the needle. Sorry to disappoint you when it comes to web traffic. Think about it. A percentage of fans don’t like him and are over him. You really think he draws “clicks” as you call it? You’re dead wrong. Joe sees the data. Sorry. –Joe
If nationally the media are almost exclusively covering THAT story would you as a local reporter feel obligated to cover the “local angle”.
When we join in this “shoot the messenger” mentality we negate the true culprit. Who stayed out till 3AM…blasted blackout drunk and hanging with dudes with bad reps? It wasn’t Joe, or Ira, or Roy Cummings or Tom Jones or the dozens of other reporters whose JOB it is to cover this story.
As for me I’ve honestly moved on…but I’ve been swamped with Fameis coverage for a month…I understand why however. I just believe all this coverage…while perhaps burning me out a bit…has also given me a better perspective. It’s just another subplot to the 2018 story.
So a final question…no matter our record…4-12 or 12-4 when the final recording of the Buc’s 2018 season is placed into Wikipedia…do we doubt that the Fameis story will be a major part of the story of 2018?

This may be the biggest Bucs story since Josh Freeman went mental. And you want Joe to stop writing about Jameis… for what exactly, the blocking schemes of Alex Cappa???

Bg story. Big distraction. I care about the team and hate seeing them bothered with this crap. You know Joe, I’ve been reading your posts since you basically beefed us to come over from TBO. You were good, engaging and above else a Buc Fan. I think a lot of what made you was a different approach and a fan’s perspective. Let me tell you bro, you’re getting a pretty big head. Success can do that. A lot of readers criticize you these days, some right, some maybe not so much. I think you’d be wise to listen to both. And I care about the team and you along with the rest of the pen and mics aren’t doing them any favors. I’ve let it go, but you do you, Joe.
Really not sure what you’re getting at. But Joe is a gargantuan Bucs fan — and Joe doesn’t tell anyone else how to be a fan. There are many ways to approach, and they’re all fine if you cheer for the team when the whistle blows. Joe really has no time to care about criticism, just like when you started reading in 2008. This site would stink if Joe cared about public opinion. For every happy reader there’s an annoyed one. That’s just how it goes. Fans aren’t coming here for the Jameis crap. They’re here for the Bucs. I’m not talking about the stories as much as the stupid questions directed to the other players and the coaches. They didn’t do anything do why do they get the heat for it?

For all you who think guys are tuning Jameis out think again. Most of the players on this team are just like him and they accept him even with his short comings because they have seen he genuinely wants to win for this team. He’s done some silly things, said some odd things but they don’t turn on their own like you will eventually turn on them. They know that it’s not all Jameis fault that the Bucs have lost so many games like a number of you people do. The defense and special teams know they are part of the reason he feels he has to do so much on every pass and offense has hung him out to dry at times. These players also know that some of you so called fans who blast Jameis now will bring your hypicritical faces to him for a signature once he turns it around. They know Jameis has to be 3 times better than Tom Brady for you to like him.
