What Are The True Feelings?

July 24th, 2018

Pro or con on America?

So this is what we do know:

America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, has yet to be included in any of the Bucs’ 2018 promotional marketing videos. And Jameis’ likeness has been stripped off the side of the Den of Depression (given all the losses in that crib since Chucky left, is that really a bad thing?).

What we do not know is what Team Glazer thinks of all of this, and did they order it?

Of course, the latter two actions by the team come in the wake of NFL strongman Roger Goodell sentencing Jameis to a three-game suspension over a hassle with an Uber driver in Arizona.

Albert Breer of theMMQB.com, perched in his Boston ivory tower, seems to have the pulse of Team Glazer when he wrote it is likely that Team Glazer is peeved.

I don’t think the Buccaneers’ decision to leave Jameis Winston out of a big promotional campaign last week should be ignored. A decision like that is made at the highest levels of an organization, and it probably reflects the feelings of those in ownership about the position Winston’s behavior and resulting suspension put the team in.

Of course, no one really knows what Team Glazer truly thinks of all of this, outside of their right-hand men in the non-football wing of One Buc Palace and Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.

Well, there are a couple of interesting timelines at work here. First, when were those videos shot? Remember, Bucs players have been scattered all across the globe for more than five weeks. The videos debuted last week on Buccaneers.com.

So it is likely the videos were shot before June minicamp broke, before Goodell announced his decision (which came on June 28). Did the Bucs have time to edit Jameis from the videos or did he appear in any videos that simply were not released due to his suspension?

And here is where it gets more interesting. Internationally popular JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman, thanks to his dogged investigative nose for news, became privy to what Jameis had told the Buccaneers about his involvement with the Uber hassle before Jameis was suspended.

A week later, Ira met with Team Glazer at the owners meetings in Atlanta and there, as Ira explains later today in his podcast, Team Glazer was solidly behind Jameis.

So what changed, if Team Glazer was 100 percent behind Jameis in March at the owners meetings in Orlando and staunchly behind Jameis two months later (when it is very likely they knew what Jameis told the NFL)?

Joe will guess the removal of Jameis’ mural from the Den of Depression is an act of appeasement to corporate sponsors.

Joe does know the following: We will all know where Team Glazer stands with Jameis by March 13, 2019, the start of the new league year.

Prior to that date, the Bucs can release Jameis and not be handcuffed with his $21 million salary for next season.

People can point fingers at the Glazers, Koetter, Jimbo, but the common denominator is Jameis. If Jameis was like OJ Howard, Godwin or just about any other rookie we would be looking at things completely differently.
Sorry to say “You reap what you sow”……..

  2. Alanbucsfan Says:

Good guess, Joe. It’s strictly business.

  3. BrianBucs Says:

I would love to have been a fly on the wall in that first meeting with the Glazers and Winston after they found out that he had been lying to them for 2 years. PRICELESS!
Maybe the taking down of his mural was for the Corporate sponsors and maybe it was the Glazers realizing that Winston in no way deserves to be the face of their franchise.
As training camp starts and these folks get behind the podium we will finally get to see what the PR angle is and what direction the spin takes on. I’m sure that by then everybody will have been told what to say. It will be very interesting for sure.

  4. Bucsfanman Says:

Leadership is one of the main issues with this organization. The Glazers have been absentee owners since Malcolm passed. Regardless of Jameis, this has been a rudderless ship for a long, long time. It starts at the top.
What the Glazers think on any subject remains a mystery. Not what I would call “involved” ownership.

  5. Dooshlarue Says:

All this over a little “hassle”?
Wow Joe, why would they do that?
    Really?

  6. Walter Seidel Says:

Joe, it’s gotten to the point with you that I don’t even need to comment on the “Not Even Raymond James Stadium Quarterback”….stick a fork in it….it’s done.

  7. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Joe does know the following: We will all know where Team Glazer stands with Jameis by March 13, 2019, the start of the new league year.”

Hmmm, the NFL 2019 Draft is 25-27 April in Nashville, Tennessee. Interesting dilemma for the Glazer Boyz IF Jameis & the Bucs fizzle this year. Possible new GM, new HC (and accompanying new coaching staff) AND a new starting QB. Wow, a Trifecta. Hopefully we get to keep our punter though.

But hey, that’ll give the media & JBFers LOTS to talk about, as we spend the next 5 or more years in the NFC South cellar yet again.

  8. Lunchbox Says:

I’ll be keeping a keen eye on the College QBs this year. I’m most definitely NOT hoping for Jameis’s demise, as that would likely also mean new coach, possibly GM, etc) but if it were to happen, I wanna see who we might draft with our high draft pick.

Tough to defend a he said/she said, with ZERO EVIDENCE, VS a lynch mob of sissy-boy fans…silence is GOLDEN

  10. The Daily Autopsy Says:

Regardless of what the NFL did with Winston’s drunken Ubergate did anyone think they would be using Jameis as their marketing marquee?

  11. BrianBucs Says:

With any big business, sports included, what they say or what happens publically and what happens privately sometimes are two different things.
Winston has been an embarrassment to the franchise and maybe the Glazers have finally realized that they made a huge mistake by wasting the #1 pick in the draft on him. It’s kind of like buying a dog that keeps biting you. Even though you may love him, how many bites do you endure before you finally realize it’s best to get rid of him before getting bitten again.

  12. stpetebucsfan Says:

You can just read JBF to see what a mess Jameis has created for himself.

In the past month the Jameis threads always get large numbers of comments generally 3 to 4 times the other threads. JBF represents the more hard core Buc fans and so that interest may be affected by the type of people who come to JBF.

But here is where Jameis, the Glazers and everybody involved should be concerned. Just anecdotally…somebody else can do the work if you want specific numbers…it appears our board is divided almost equally between those who still support Jameis…those who want him gone yesterday…and those like me who are just riding it out. Jameis now scares me…doesn’t mean it will affect my love of the Bucs.

Now outside of JBF where regular folks are not as rabid as we are I do not know what that % might be. I suspect it’s at least 50-50 and perhaps worse.

The folks here who support Jameis believe he is our best chance to win…and I get that. They want to win desperately and so they give Jameis a LOT more leash and if he wins it’s all good. I also want to win. But not at all costs and not if it is jeopardizing the future.

Those who still believe in Jameis personally do not see any jeopardy in his behavior patterns. Those of us who feel betrayed by his drunken Arizona adventures are not as sanguine about his future behavior.

If corporate sponsors drove this it’s still the same deal. The Bucs are also a corporation and no corporation will stick long with someone who damages their brand. The picture may have come down because the Glazers have probably hired professionals to secretly poll the fans.

The Glazers SHOULD know a lot more than us about the reaction through our broader community. I certainly do not pretend to know. I only know what I read here at JBF.

  13. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    BrianBucs

Bucs organization has been an embarrassment long before winston

  14. THETRUTH Says:

It’s simple the Glazers are respecting the sensitivity of the situation to fans. No less no more

Let’s stop talking about JW and incident for a week , Ago bless your short of stories to write about , 90 players on roster we could learn about

  15. Godeep66 Says:

Sorry to say. We are rebuilding next year. The QB would be long gone if he did not play college ball in the same state as he plays in the NFL. Picking him over Marcus M was strictly a “put fans in the seats” selection. MM is far superior on and off the field.

  16. BrianBucs Says:

Let’s also not forget that last year at this time Koetter was trying very hard to convince Nick Foles to come here. You know that would not have happened without the Glazers consent, and it would not be to come here and be the backup QB. Maybe even a year ago Koetter and the Glazers already saw the writing on the wall.

  17. TheDailyAutopsy Says:

Joe, regardless what the NFL did after Winston’s drunken Ubergate, why would anyone make him the Bucs’ poster boy (except for bad behavior)?

  18. Dooshlarue Says:

    BrianBuc,

Yeah that’s true about Foles. I really think Koetter tired of Winston’s BS even before the “hassle”.
That alleged rift between them last year was probably real and that’s when Koetter realized he had a mental midget, albeit a sporadically talented one under center.
Coach K strikes me as the type of coach that needs a QB who listens, executes and doesn’t let his emotions control him.
I feel better starting the season without Jameis and I bet Koetter does too.

  19. 813bucboi Says:

    nawl it aint just business…..

as joe stated, the glazers and other folks at OBP all said they are disappointed but support Winston and have his back…..as a billionaire, you don’t stick your neck out and make comments like that without knowing the facts or evidence…..

just look at our most recent example of a player that let the organization and fans down….DM

DM had a injury(hammy), had a bad year….year got worse once he got suspended….glazers took his mural down….he missed 3games, came back, had a lousy year and is now gone…..had DM gotten over 1K yards and been productive he would’ve still been on the roster…..but his performance along with his drama wasn’t worth it…..

fast forward to the present, Winston gets hurt, plays bad, news comes out about his situation in ARZ, team continues to lose and has a lousy season, he gets suspended….glazers take his mural down…..IF Winston has a lousy season he’s gone…..he wins he’ll be here until be becomes an URFA….at that point he hauls a$$…..

no doubt Winston brought this on himself but the glazers said they support him….once you get on that horse, you got to ride it!!!!…..glazers cant say they back him but take his mural down and decide not to include him in any promo vids…..that’s being a backstabber!!!!!….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES….GO BUCS!!!!

  20. 813bucboi Says:

IMO, the “rift” started once Winston got injured and dirk continued to play him….I think Winston told the coaches and medical staff that his shoulder wasn’t right, but dirk kept him in because he was trying(and did) to save his job….Winston didn’t get shut down until after he had a visit with dr. Andrews….

I think the rift arose when both Winston and dirk were trying to protect themselves….Winston knew he was really injured and dirk knew he was really on the hot seat…..

but the injury worked in both favor….Winston got to sit and performed better when he returned while dirk got to use the injury excuse…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES….GO BUCS!!!!

I think it is absolutely hilarious. Grown men and women so preoccupied with trivia. If you want to know whats going to happen forget everything from the past including today that has anything to do with Buc’s football. Get a good nights sleep, wake up tomorrow with a clear mind and enjoy a new training camp, pre-season, and 2018 season. If you’re not on the Glazer payroll there is not one thing you can do about the outcome. 99% of the past speculation is wrong. Recordable truth starts tomorrow. Make friends with all those good people you have fought with over ridiculous Buc’s topics during the offseason. Happy Football season to all.

Leaving Jameis picture off the RayJay billboards was a logical thing to do; who wants to advertise a team using someone who has been suspended for sexual misconduct. I have a Winston jeysey in my closet – there it will stay.

“Joe will guess the removal of Jameis’ mural from the Den of Depression is an act of appeasement to corporate sponsors.”

You hit the nail on the head. Just because Jameis won’t be the face of the marketing department, that doesn’t mean if he plays well enough to win 8-10 games he’s not going anywhere.

  34. Tony LA Says:

I say again what I said multiple times yesterday…

The Glazers have done nothing wrong.

    Jameis and Jameis alone…
…hung out with the worst group of friends he could have picked PR wise that night
    …drank way too much
…did whatever he did in the Uber
…covered up much about what happened until it was too late

The Glazers did none of that. what they have done is exactly what they should. He’s clearly on 2018 notice. He has 13 games to decide his fate. He has to do two things:

    -stay out of trouble
-win at the very least 7 of those 13 games

And that is just to get another one year shot in 2019.

They do not have to say anything. They chose not to cut him or sign another QB. They are obviously giving Winston one last chance in 2018.

    It’s on him, guys. Completely.

  35. BucNole Says:

Face it slurpers. . . JW is your QB this year.

But plz – quit posting stoopid $hit on here and let the big boys talk a little football.

  36. Lord Cornelius Says:

“…covered up much about what happened until it was too late”

I don’t think he covered anything up. Unless you also can remember things exactly from when you were black out drunk 2+ years ago.

He told the team what he knew which in retrospect probably wasn’t that much. He probably still believes to himself that he didn’t grope the driver; but because he was drunk he can’t say it with full confidence. He didn’t bury any information – at least based on anything reported – and he shouldn’t have been speculating about it out loud to the public regardless.

On the other hand I agree with what you laid out in terms of him determining his future. He has to 1) Win games and play well and 2) Be 100% clean off the field and show maturity. 2018 gets him a chance at 2019 to do that again. He does all of that and we’re a winning team this year and the next then he’ll get an extension and people will forget for the most part.

  37. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

What am I missing Joe? I just drove by the stadium and all of the posters are down. You write as though JW is the only one that came down.

  38. asdf Says:

“[He] doesn’t throw guys open. That works at [college] when your receivers are better than the DBs you are playing against, but if you are a second late in the NFL, you are screwed.”

Interesting quote from a scout on Jameis….He needs to somehow wildly improve here or he will never be elite

  39. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Lord, you don’t think his friends would have reminded him that he was blotto later that night and took another Uber? When him and his boy Darby were talking about that night, you don’t think that would have come up in the course of conversation? Darby specifically said there were 3 people in that car. You don’t think he was trying to mislead investigators? C’mon man! Get real here. Speaking of Darby, is he suspended? Lying to investigators should get some punishment too.

Man that’s a really well thought out response. But not tough to defend more than a half dozen bad decisions…off the field…trying to attack a ref and fighting with another player getting his star WR suspended a game on the field?

TVAL…sissy boy…that was the wimpiest response I’ve ever read here…ZERO EVIDENCE….kind of like the zero facts in your post. There are none so blind as those who will not see.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE WOMEN!!!! Forget about them. It’s about JUDGEMENT and then LYING….this year not two years ago!!!

  43. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Brianbuc and Stpetebuc all ready to destroy another persons life. You need to remember nobody was there that night. Instead of trying to rip someone apart you should be trying to build someone up. I’m fully confident you will see the spirit of good in man that will blossom through adversity. He was young, I was young and now my job is to build tomorrow not break it down. I strongly feel their is greater good in a Jameis and it will prevail. Go Bucs!

  44. Tampaspicer Says:

I’m tired of the JW3 stuff. I know the media will not want to hear this from the team or players but this would be the best thing for everyone to move on from the JW3 suspension. The very 1st thing that should be said at the 1st press conference is. We are not going to discuss the JW3 suspension in any way. Please don’t ask about it because the answer will always be NO COMMENT.
