Jameis Winston Talks About His “Wakeup Call”

July 10th, 2018

Shoulder injuries, nine straight losses as a starter and being accused of crotch-grabbing without permission were not the only eye-openers for Jameis Winston last season.

Jameis shared with Joe a heartfelt “wakeup call” he experienced in 2017. The chatter from America’s Quarterback came during a June episode of the Ira Kaufman Podcast.

Joe asked Jameis about how he felt meeting Aaron Rodgers for the first time last season, a couple months after his private chat with Tom Brady at the Den of Depression.

“Just shaking his hand after that game and getting a chance to play in Lambeau Field, I really wish we could have [won],” Jameis said of meeting Rodgers in November.

“Meeting him would have been better. Same with Tom Brady. Beating him would have been way better [than losing on Thursday Night Football].

“But you know, I think I’m one of the few quarterbacks who play in a division with three MVPs. And it’s competition every single week. You know, we have Drew Brees who’s a definite Hall of Famer. We have Cam Newton who has already broke records as a quarterback. And we have Matt [Ryan] who is now the highest paid quarterback in the NFL. So I think it’s a privilege every week to play in this league against every single quarterback, but definitely meeting the greats like Rodgers and Brady last year was not only a privilege, but I mean it’s a wakeup call. It’s like, ‘Jameis you’re competing against these guys and instead of you idolizing these guys, you need to be trying to beat these guys every single time you play them. Like you’re already playing three of the best [in your division] every single week.’ So just a wakeup call that I got to step my game up. Even though [Rodgers] was hurt, we still lost that game. People that have success in this league they win. That’s my main thing I’m focusing on is winning.”

Great, candid take from Jameis, but also a little odd for a third-year quarterback. It was as if Jameis acknowledged that he caught himself getting starstruck and recognized that it affected him.

Before meeting Brady and Rodgers, Jameis already had beaten Newton, one of his major childhood idols, Brees and Ryan, as well as Eli Manning and Russell Wilson. Jameis also played in a Pro Bowl. So one might think he had gotten past the wakeup-call stage.

    I’m converted!

How long until win a date with jameis night?

  2. Frank Pillow Says:

Losing to Brett Hundley and his 84 passing yards should’ve been the REAL wake-up call from that trip to Green Bay. Sheesh.

  3. Dooshlarue Says:

Sounds like more Jameis BS to me. He just says sh!t he thinks he’s supposed to say.
    Mock humility.
I’m just surprised he didn’t give the obligatory shout out to his boy upstairs….. you know, the guy that forgives you for multiple F-ups?

  4. Joe Blahak Says:

I remember the podcast and thought how odd it was that Winston was speaking in a low hushed tone and just spewing out cliche after cliche…calculated and reserved to cover something up…much like his claim to being a “leader” and good QB

  5. AlteredEgo Says:

Yeah….after how many Snooze Control hits ?….

  6. meh Says:

    Cut him.

  7. donuts Says:

Looks like the NFL has its second off-season PR disaster breaking today…have you seen the pics of LeSean McCoys girl and the post? see nypost. No way he plays ever again.

In RE Winston being enamored with All Pro QB in year 3…just more signs of him not being mature NFL QB. He has this year to turn around his career or it will be exit stage left.

  8. D-Rome Says:

Great, candid take from Jameis, but also a little odd for a third-year quarterback. It was as if Jameis acknowledged that he caught himself getting starstruck and recognized that it affected him.

Joe, do you remember several years ago during the Raheem Morris days when the Packers played the Bucs at the Den of Depression? There was some kind of delay of the game for something not football related and I remember Raheem and a few other offensive players going up to Aaron Rodgers because they were pretty much star struck.

  9. Robert Says:

just saw that donut…….it’s bad, real bad. and then the talk of beating his son. hello DCF, goodbye NFL.

at least JW’s boys got rid of the tapes….

  10. donuts Says:

I remember Raheem and a few other offensive players going up to Aaron Rodgers because they were pretty much star struck.

How do you know they were not taunting Rodgers with their Youngry smack talk? lol I met Raheem at a U2 concert..he was on the GA floor for a little bit..talk about odd meeting places. lol

  11. 1sparkybuc Says:

I can understand why some people are hesitant to defend Jameis Winston. What I can’t understand is why other supposed “fans” are so hell bent on attacking him. What’s their motivation? What do they get out of it? It’s one single questionable off field incident. It’s near two and a half years ago with nothing since.. it’s a “he said”, “she said”, with no witness and no video. The attacks would make more sense if there was some evidence to prove he did something wrong. There’s nothing. Who needs trolls when you have “fans” like these? Your complaints here won’t change anything. The Bucs are not going to cut him. He will play well and they will pay him.

  12. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Donuts

You are 100% correct. Keeping in mind that McCoy is still denying all the accusations I’ll try to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Because if he did that to the girlfriend we won’t be talking about football. We’ll be talking about prison or at least SHOULD be.

My father was a wife beater. Beat the hell out of my mom until I became a teenager and confronted him physically. Threw me out of the house and my mother followed and finally got away from it. In the 50’s and 60’s there were none of the halfway houses for battered women and to make it even tougher we had priests come to our house and counsel my mother that leaving him would be wrong and bad for we kids. Yeah…I’ll tell you what is bad for the kids…watching that crap and spending your life full of that anger. Men who beat women are scum of the worst kind.

IF…and again McCoy claims he didn’t…but IF he did…just rip his entire package off
That picture reveals repeated bashing…not just a punch like Ray Rice.

BTW Can we please save any comparison to our QB…there is none.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Do I remember this right…….Joe urging the Bucs to bring in LeSean McCoy?

    Surely, I’m mistaken…..

However the good news is that this will take some of the stink off of Jameis…..

He beating looks really, really bad…..McCoy should be in jail for sure.

    Joe knows RBs too!

  17. Robert Says:

character still counts to some of us.

  18. D-Rome Says:

What I can’t understand is why other supposed “fans” are so hell bent on attacking him.

Those “fans” understand that sexual assault is a very serious issue and is not something that should be overlooked because you are (or were) a fan of a player.

Fans can be the worst sometimes. None of you tolerated hearing Cowboys fans talk about Ezekiel Elliott in a way that painted what he did in a positive light. Oh, but when it’s “your guy” all the excuses come out of the woodwork.

Personally, I’m not rooting for him to fail. I am looking at this objectively. He sexually assaulted that woman and the NFL found her story to be true. It would have been six games if they didn’t negotiate a deal. Those are the facts. On top of all of that Jameis Winston is not a leader and he’s been a losing QB in the time he has been here. Those are the facts. Of the 32 starting QBs in the league Jameis Winston is *not* a top 16 QB.

I am a fan of the Buccaneers and not an individual player.

  19. Bucko40 Says:

This guy is the ultimate sleazy used car salesman. He do anything and say anything to make you buy what he’s selling. If anyone is truly buying his speak anymore they are a true HOMER Bucs fan.

  21. Robert Says:

exactly d-rome. and when they put that player as the face of the franchise…….well then that player just cost me a sport I once enjoyed.

so you’re doubly pissed at said player.

  22. BrianBucs Says:

Winston should have had a LOT of wakeup calls by now

  23. Destinjohnny Says:

I couldn’t imagine leaving the kinda money jameis has left on the table

  24. Dooshlarue Says:

Winston must have given the front desk the wrong room number for them wake up calls!

  25. Defense Rules Says:

@Jameis … “I really wish we could have [won],” Jameis said of meeting Rodgers in November. Meeting him would have been better. Same with Tom Brady. Beating him would have been way better [than losing on Thursday Night Football].”

Yup, 2 losses … BOTH could’ve been won with better offensive play (14 pts against the Pats & 20 pts against the Packers). Defense held the Pats to 19 pts & held the Packers to 26 pts. One more TD in each game & we would’ve won. Defenses fault once again in doubt.

  26. Eric Says:

America’s QB will be back come game four…………..

In time, all this nonsense over the hassle will be forgotten.

  27. Bucsfanman Says:

D-Rome- I couldn’t agree more. The Bucs are bigger than ONE player.

  28. stpetebucsfan Says:

    What D-Rome just said.

  30. Walter Seidel Says:

And Eric…..sexual assault is NOT a “hassle”. Do you have a daughter?

  31. Eric Says:

No Walter but I have practiced criminal law for 30 years, and know the definition of sexual assault.

It’s a hassle as no charges were ever filed, and none sought.

They will always have a fan in me no matter what.

  34. Bucsfanman Says:

Walter- Jameis will play for the Bucs this season. While his actions are deplorable, the Glazers have to make a business decision. The TEAM is in position to make some noise and Fitzy is just a place-holder. In the end it’s the TEAM that matters, NOT Jameis Winston.
And “fans”? Man please, if the Bucs don’t start winning games they won’t need to worry about JW’s presence.

What’s the date on this interview? Looks to be more than a month old…and that’s fine…just looking for context….I don’t think Winston would be saying the same stuff in the past week or so.

The man must have a lot of alarm clocks, each one set to go off at a different time so he can always claim he got (another) wake up call.

  38. Eric Says:

Remember when Namath got all liquored up and tried to kiss the girl during the half time interview?

This is about on par with that.

  39. Roy T. Buford Says:

@DB55…I agree…there is a big difference here. Assualt versus assault and bettary. Both are felonies, of course.

  40. Bucsfanman Says:

DB55- I guess ‘deplorable’ is a little too strong. I would argue semantics, but I agree. It was more immature and stupid, comparatively speaking. Point taken.

  41. TX Bucs fan Says:

I tend to agree with Eric on this one. What has me curious is the Uber drivers immediate response to what allegedly happened. It has been reported that she stated “What’s up with that?”.

    Strange, to say the least.

  42. D-Rome Says:

What’s the date on this interview? Looks to be more than a month old…and that’s fine…just looking for context….I don’t think Winston would be saying the same stuff in the past week or so.

This was part of the Ira Kaufman podcast on an episode one month ago. The actual interview probably took place 2-4 weeks prior so it’s possible these quotes are about two months old. Why are we making things up? Especially with such confidence. The interview is 1 month old and it was recorded 5 days prior. –Joe

  51. D-Rome Says:

Why are we making things up? Especially with such confidence. The interview is 1 month old and it was recorded 5 days prior. –Joe

Easy, Joe. I have my own podcast (not football related) and when I have a guest often times the interview was recorded a few weeks in advance. Many podcasters do this. I was guessing this may have been the case with you.

Quite frankly, with all the work you do on JBF it’s remarkable you did the interview, got it edited, and published it in five days with *everything* else you do for the site!

  52. Sc Bucs fan Says:

DB55 I’m impressed you waited so long to place the race card. A new record for you.

  53. Roy T. Buford Says:

Good gosh…why do some of you guys always have to inject race into everything? Too funny.

What’s even funnier is guys still saying there is no evidence. That ship left port weeks ago. Certainly there’s enough in there to have the NFL negotiate it all down to 3 games from 6. No way I can see anyone takes that (if it’s a raw deal, falsly accused, etc) unless there is plenty to it. That is, this may cost Winston millions as is. No need to make it worse by fighting it.

For “ace in the hole.” Just to be clear, when any guy does it, white or black (since you seem to thing that matters), if carried to the court system, it’s called assault. Just because it’s not in the legal system mean what’s alleged didn’t happen. And the NFL says it did.

  54. Walter Seidel Says:

Eric, using Namath to defend Winston’s sexual assault is plain stupid and irrelevant. If you practiced law for 30 minutes, much less 30 years, I feel for your client….

  55. Roy T. Buford Says:

Sexual assault involves some sort of penetration, if not with a penis, at least with a finger. No mention of that was made. What Ben was accused of (and never found guilty of just like JW) is Way worse than JW. JW is guilty of Horrible Judgement on several different levels but I will remain a Supporter as long as he is in a Bucs uniform

I’m not forgiving anything that Winston has been accused of, but Pittsburgh fans want to win, and it appears that many Bucs fans just want choir boys to root for. No one can tell me the difference between Roethlisberger and Winston without talking about winning.

Reading all of these posts and comments every day shows just how Polarizing of a figure Winston is and how he and his actions can divide and separate our fanbase.

Now I can see your relative closeness to the situation. I understand. I lived in Steubenville OH. back in 95 and 96. I went to almost every Steelers home game as my fiance’s dad was a Foreman at an industrial shelving factory and the Drivers used to bribe him with Tickets to the game to get bumped up in line. He used to give them all to me.
Pittsburgh is a Totally different football town than Tampa. The atmosphere there at games was electric! I have been to over 120 Bucs home games but most of them were in losing seasons! I left Florida in 00 so I wasn’t actually in the stadium when we were Contenders very often but in Pittsburgh it felt like they were Always in the hunt.

Big Ben had something else going for him….a Super Bowl.

I feel pretty sure if Jameis had won a Super Bowl in one of his first three years there would be a totally different reaction from the fans. Not me and not some others here but I just gotta believe if Jameis already had an SB instead of a 50-50 split it would be more like 90-10 in favor of Jameis.

The keyboard mafia is out in full force tonight, lmao. Grow up people.

Bla, bla, bla. All talk, mariota has won a playoff game, and he just woke up. Amazing…..

  116. BrianBucs Says:

You also have to remember that Big Ben did not have the red flags, checkered past and history of bad events that Winston has.
When Ben did what he did it surprised everybody as he always kept his nose clean.
With Winston, nothing bad or questionable that he would ever do would surprise anybody

Hey Buc Eric 75, You’re last post is “SPOT ON”

That is the “Truth of The Truth”

Well Said and my hats off to you

Nobody likes or wants you when…You’re down and Out.

  119. Buddy Says:

Mariota. Sure what was his “INTERCEPTION to TOUCHDOWN RATIO” last year again? I thought I heard it wrong.

Can somebody clear it up for me? Because I thought I heard that he ACTUALLY threw more interceptions than touchdowns. That can’t be true can it?

    HOLY COW!

The AMAZING part “if true” is how well his TEAM carried him! His teammates are really good man! Not so sure about him though (if that’s ACTUALLY true that is)

  120. Buddy Says:

    Seriously, is that true?

  121. Buddy Says:

I did wait awhile for a response. The silence is defending…..

  122. Walter Seidel Says:

Hey Joe (where ya going with that…….oh, never mind)…but seriously. The huge division in the fan base cause by Winston is irrefutable. And irreparable. It IS time to move on from this clown.

Winning softens most negativity when it comes to pro football fan support, just win a few more than your share of games and the angst will go away. The future does not reflect the past always, that is enough to hold out hope for the Bucs and our QB this upcoming season, that’s what fans do despite the distractions. This Winston distraction has been dragged through the mud ad nauseam now entering upchuck territory. Winning is the universal cure in sports, fan egos are boosted and superficial weight is lifted from our sboulders. Go Bucs!

  126. Bobby Says:

Look, what happened with Winston was 2 years ago. He was
drunk which is no excuse but it is a fact. If he’s eliminated alcohol from his life he may have turned a corner. He’s been squeaky clean for 2+ yrs now. My concern is more with his play making decisions than his off field decisions. He has the ability to be an elite QB but so far his consistancy just isn’t there. He’s like a pitcher who comes into the game with no warm up. By the time he gets going we’re usually behind. I’m not condoning what he did but it’s just strike 1 at Tampa Bay. I’m constantly reading from posters here how GMC should be more like Sapp. If Winston performs on the field my guess is all will be forgiven. Just ask big Ben at Pittsburg.
