Odd Couple

BY IRA KAUFMAN

Jameis Winston faces a difficult challenge regaining the trust of every employee toiling at One Buc Place. He would be wise to start with Dirk Koetter.

It wasn’t long ago that Koetter was chosen to succeed Lovie Smith based primarily on his relationship with Tampa Bay’s young quarterback.

With Winston taking every snap as a rookie and Koetter serving as offensive coordinator, the Bucs set a franchise record for total offense in 2015. And when Koetter led the Bucs to a 9-7 mark in his first season as an NFL head coach, there was no reason to doubt this was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

That has all unraveled in the past seven months.

It started last December with an unsubstantiated report by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, asserting a rift between Koetter and Winston. According to Rapoport, Winston questioned Koetter’s play-calling skills and didn’t feel he received enough support during his struggles with a shoulder injury.

Who generated this story? I may not have a smoking gun, but I know one thing: it didn’t come from Dirk Koetter.

Following a 24-21 home loss to Detroit, both sides quickly denied the validity of the report.

“I know the truth about our relationship,” Koetter said. “My big concern is our football team.”

Winston also tried to shoot down a story that quickly generated national headlines.

“Obviously, a lot of stuff can come out when we’re not doing as expected, but that’s false,” Winston said. “Coach Koetter coaches his tail off, and he definitely supports me. So whatever anybody else has to say outside of that — that’s just water under the bridge, man.”

The water level is rising.

When Koetter moved into the head coach’s office, Winston hadn’t yet taken that fateful Uber ride in Arizona. It was still a few months off, but Koetter didn’t find out about it until last fall.

That’s a problem in and of itself.

The biggest keys to a healthy coach-quarterback relationship are communication and trust. Before he throws a single pass in training camp, Winston needs to connect with Koetter.

Koetter Should Shoulder Some Blame

It’s been a rough stretch for Tampa Bay’s head coach — and he has to take his fair share of the blame for the brutal 2017 season. He calls the plays, he decides on his staff and he is responsible for getting his team ready to play.

The Bucs didn’t look ready to play in their first four road games — at Minnesota, Arizona, Buffalo and New Orleans. Koetter’s loyalty to Doug Martin was misguided. Chris Baker should not have been starting over Clinton McDonald and red-zone woes are on his plate, too.

But Koetter doesn’t deserve these last two body blows involving Winston. He had to be hurt by the suggestion of friction between the two and now he has to seriously wonder if Winston is the right guy going forward.

Wins Take Priority Over Depth Chart

Koetter’s focus will soon be getting Ryan Fitzpatrick ready for New Orleans. If Winston felt unsupported last year, wait until camp rolls around and he’s getting minimal snaps.

Koetter can’t worry about that — and he won’t. Winston did this to himself and now it’s about giving this football team the best chance to win every week.

And if that means Winston holds a clipboard when he returns from suspension, so be it.

That’s what happens when you’ve got a failure to communicate.

Howard is not part of the Winston lynch mob.
That said, if Fitz is 3-0 or even 2-1 he should keep starting

  2. Pete I Says:

A mediocre QB with a Coach who hasn’t shown he is a NFL level head coach. Then add in the lies about, is it again the Uber hassle? America’s Choir Boy belongs holding a clipboard all season. Hopefully somewhere else, but if not so be it. Whatever the choice it’s likely to be the wrong choice if made by the Glaziers.

  3. Pete I Says:

“he (Koetter) has to seriously wonder if Winston is the right guy going forward.” One can only hope he is wise enough to wonder that.

  5. tval Says:

Pete needs help, or a job.LOL. Hate! Hate! Hate!

  6. feelthepewterpower Says:

Individually, Fitz isn’t the future of the team. We need to know if Winston is the future of the franchise from week four onward.

  7. JMan5 Says:

Jameis is what the Bucs deserve. Lol

  8. Pickgrin Says:

“if that means Winston holds a clipboard when he returns from suspension, so be it.”

That ain’t happening Ira and you know it.

Only chance for that would be if the Bucs are 3-0 when Winston comes back and even then I would seriously doubt coach K actually believes Ryan Fitzpatrick gives the team a better chance to win than Winston would…

  9. DB55 Says:

    Ira,

This all seems all too familiar. Why don’t you and Tom Jones split the cost of a billboard on Dale Mabry Hwy and we can just fire the liar and roll with Fitzpatrick?

Wouldn’t that be easier than having to Regurgitating the same story every other day?

You guys want to cut off your nose to spite your face. Well let’s look back.

Raheem wasn’t good enough, no discipline. Yet he was the last coach to win ten games.

Schiano was too tough, college coach, men don’t react well To that style, yet he had the best def in the past ten years.

Glennon was a giraffe, too slow, can’t play, then mcclown came in and on top of stinking the place up, he literally cried on the podium. Yet he’s respected by some of the never-Winston crowd. Smh.

Finally, there’s Jameis who is by far the best qb this town has seen since Jeff Garcia and you guys are clamoring to get rid of him bc he lied? Jury is still out on that, oh wait no jury bc no crime.

What exactly are you guys looking for? Carson Wentz? A maga Christian conservative that will take Tampa to the Super Bowl (oh wait that’s a lie) with no running game, defense or special teams? All while praying every game and going fishing on Mondays? Honestly I think the answer is yes that’s exactly what some people want. Good luck with that!

    To recap:
Lovie, mcclown, McIceCream = excellent, good and great. (All career losers)

Raheem, Schiano, Winston = not good enough (SB ring, national champ, national champ/Heisman and cleats already hanging in the hof)

What does this say? To me it says that EVERY member of the TB mic club is best served reporting than providing opinions bc obviously their track record is atrocious at best.

And for the Marcus Mariota crowd consider this MM was drafted in 2015 #2 overall, in 16 they drafted 8th overall and in 17 #5 overall. So really how good can he be?

Finally, as to the detrimental affects Winston’s actions has on this org I ask what stellar rep are people referring to? Mrsa? The Freeman fiasco where a coach is sharing a players medical history, the drug use, the 6 win avg for the past decade? The third lowest home attendance in the league? The uncanny ability to only be able to sign third tiered FA. Or maybe the reputation of bringing in FA paying them a huge salary only to see them sit out the season and then return to their former team.

I’m just trying to figure out what reputation Jameis is messing up? Maybe if people quiet down a bit he can ruin the reputation of being the second worst team organization in the league since their inception. Maybe!

  10. SB Says:

I don’t know about that Pick. If Fitz goes out there and beats 3 Division Champs in a row he should stay until we lose.

  12. DB55 Says:

The fact that anyone even thinks Fitz can go 3-0 against these teams when he has a 1-8 career record against them amazes me. Fitz has had much better defenses and running games around him during that 1-8 streak.

What fantasyland do you guys live in?

  13. Bobby M. Says:

Right now…..Fitz and Winston are basically the same….both are capable of getting hot but mostly streaky and over confident leading to turnovers. Winston has more perceived “upside” but he’s shown no ability to come close to all the hype…..He’s literally a mirror reflection of everything you saw at FSU….Lots of hot air….lots of turnovers and slow starts….lots of controversy. If Fitz is winning….I think the coaches may find the players prefer to stick with what is effective. The fans as well….We pay to watch the team win….nobody cares what Winston’s stats are when the losses come at a rate of 3 to 1.

  14. DB55 Says:

Can anyone make a Fitz statement without using the word if?

  15. Eric Says:

Bucs fans always want to get rid of people, but the usual outcome from that has been more often than not been disaster.

  16. AlteredEgo Says:

Can anyone describe Jameis without making excuses…

  17. DB55 Says:

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Cool Hand Luke “What we have here is a failure to communicate”

Jameis should start week 4 regardless of the Bucs record.

    3-0…..Fantastic job Fitz…..thanks.
    2-1…..Fantastic job Fitz…..thanks.
    1-2…..Not bad Fitz…………thanks.
    0-3……………………………,thanks.

  19. unbelievable Says:

Hey Pete- what username did you used to post under?

  20. D-Rome Says:

I remember during training camp last year the talk was Ryan Griffin being Jameis’ backup. Perhaps Griffin will outplay Fitzpatrick this year. He sure did last year before he got injured. In fact, Fitzpatrick was terrible in training camp and probably would have been off the roster if Griffin didn’t get hurt.

  21. DB55 Says:

Somebody answer my reputation question pls.

  22. Joe Says:

Bucs fans always want to get rid of people, but the usual outcome from that has been more often than not been disaster.

    Michael Bennett
    LaGarrette Blount
    Aqib Talib
    Darrelle Revis
    Jameis?

    (That’s just this decade.)

  23. Pete I Says:

“Bucs fans always want to get rid of people, but the usual outcome from that has been more often than not been disaster.

    Michael Bennett
    LaGarrette Blount

    (That’s just this decade.)”

Joe, are you sure the fans wanted all those guys gone? Some seem more like out and out organizational decisions.

  24. Pete I Says:

I didn’t see any real howling for Bennett, Blount or Revis to be gone from the fan base. Talib, yes but not like America’s Choir Boy is hearing.

  25. bucsfaninchina Says:

Not sure Jameis understands what the phrase “water under the bridge” means

  26. 813bucboi Says:

    DB55 on they a$$ today!!!!!…lol….

dirk should shoulder some of the blame…..this team has come out flat and unprepared multiple times last year…..questionable play calling and personnel….creativity is nonexistent in his offense….the 4vert scheme is very predictable….couple that with a mentally weak team(starts at the top with the HC) and there you have it….a lousy 5-11 season and a ton of excuses……

rally the troops dirk or gather your fishing gear!!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  27. Destinjohnny Says:

I would never hire dirk to be my coach but having said that…
Our record matched our talent level.
Give most nfl coaches players and you usually win.
Keep an eye on Buckner being our next hc

  28. Not there yet Says:

No coaches don’t shoulder the blame for stupid off field incidents. Duh it’s called the off season. Whether story is true or not it’s all on Winston. Even if it comes out that the Uber driver completely lied he still had to learn unfortunately he’s not a guy that can be put in a car alone with a female after a night of drinking and that’s all on him.

  29. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I believe Blount, Talib & Bennett were let go during the “Dominick Disaster”

It’s not the players that ended up playing well for other teams that hurt….

It was the multitude of players we drafted that didn’t play well for us.

    Now, that’s what hurt.

  30. Buc4L Says:

A few more weeks of Winston talk till we can finally move on to football. Bottom line is he needs to improve his play, when he comes back and balls out all you haters will go silent!! GO BUCS!!!

  31. Howard Cosell Says:

How does the team even know “what the fans want”?
Don’t say the internet because Bucs coverage on the internet and television is a nothing but a giant psy-op perpetrated by the local media and to some degree the owners.
What percentage of true merchandise and ticket buying fans post on Buccaneers websites? Maybe 20% max? Back in 2009 it was probably 5%. To blame the fans for anything or t hold the accountable for anything related to the BUcs is like holding the passengers of the Titanic responsible for the iceberg. Again….to me….most of sports media is a psy-op.

(I would exclude the Joes. Lol those guys are pure as the driven snow compared to corporate types like RS. Ira knows this more then anyone. Rs is closer to a personal injury attorney than a sports writer)

Oh by the way….epic post above DB55

Howard has spoken. Let it be written upon tablets

  32. Roy T. Buford Says:

Anytime Winston says something is “false” his statement is not to be believed. Anytime Winston says something is “true” his statement is not to be believed. At the time he said that, he already knew he was keeping the Uber hassle from his team as they apparently knew nothing of it and he was required to report it. I’d not be surprised if Winston was throwing all of his coaches under the bus, and just denying it. He’s not proven himself to be a great QB yet, but he’s definitely got the ability to lie.

  33. Buc4L Says:

Are you haters posting on here even bucs fans?? Find another site to fill with negativity

  34. GhostofSchiano Says:

Koetter can’t worry about that — and he won’t. Winston did this to himself and now it’s about giving this football team the best chance
    to win every week.

And with that we move forward, support Fitz, get ready for the Aint’s.

    GO BUCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. Defense Rules Says:

@Ira … “It’s been a rough stretch for Tampa Bay’s head coach — and he has to take his fair share of the blame for the brutal 2017 season. He calls the plays, he decides on his staff and he is responsible for getting his team ready to play.”

Right on target Ira, as usual. BUT … for others to hold him responsible for the Jameis ‘hassle’ isn’t fair. He got blind-sided by Jameis more-so than anyone else. Dirk’s job, as well as the jobs of his coaching staff, is on the line now more than ever. Licht did a pretty good job IMO fixing what he could in a single year (DLine & RB especially, maybe (?) the Secondary) but Jameis blew it all up when he screwed the pooch (by lying & creating a cover up, not literally … oh, never mind).

The good news for Dirk is that the rest of the team is more capable (on paper at least) than it was last year. If the defense can significantly improve this year, the Bucs are more than capable of having a winning season. Koetter … the HC & OC … needs to improve his play-calling especially AND do a better job in training camp of getting this team ready to play to start the season.

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

You are not really thinking it through, Ira.

If Winston is not the franchise quarterback of the future, then the focus would have to be on acquiring one. That means a high draft pick.

So if Ryan Fitzpatrick is winning, they especially should not start him. They would need to tank. They will not trade for a QB.

And if they tank, Koetter risks losing his job.

Winning or losing, they will have to start Winston over Ryan Fitzpatrick after the suspension.

Personally, I think this is blown way out of proportion by the media and fans/trolls. No guy here who has experience dating can say he never felt a girl up in the hopes that the date could lead elsewhere. The girl gets resistant, you stopped.

If Jameis is guilty, which I still doubt, then he did nothing more than that. We don’t know the conversation in that car. There could have been things said that led into it. We just don’t know.

But I do know that unless a guy is a church going virgin who has never made out with a girl, he’s a liar if he claims he did not touch a breast or more, and the girl stopped him sometimes.

So that would make us all guilty of sexual assault by what you elk le are claiming.

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    by what you people

  38. Defense Rules Says:

@Bonzai … “I think this is blown way out of proportion by the media and fans/trolls. No guy here who has experience dating can say he never felt a girl up in the hopes that the date could lead elsewhere.”

Bonzai, I can’t believe you just wrote that. IT WASN’T A FRIGGIN’ DATE … SHE WAS A TOTAL STRANGER. The law considers it a real no-no to feel up total strangers. They even have a word for that … it’s called “a hassle”. Oh wait, that’s Joe’s word for it. My bad.

  39. DB55 Says:

Based on what I’ve seen on Twitter it seems to me like a lot of these guys who are offended didn’t get their duck wet until the got married and even then they got married bc of what a great provider they are.

Bunch of nerds, who probably found they’re partners on match, Christian mingle or farmers dating sites. Most of them obviously suffer from micro-p and low testosterone.

Leave it to them to field a team and they may have to switch to the legends of football league.

  42. BrianBucs Says:

Pete is right. If the Bucs make the mistake of keeping Winston on their roster then he should carry the clipboard All Year. He should be the #3 QB and be deactivated each game unless the other 2 guys are injured.
I believe that Koetter doesn’t think that Winston is the guy moving forward, but Jason Licht will tell him that he is. Plus, why should all of the employees at One Buc trust Winston when he has shown he’s not deserving of it?
Bucs should let Winston hold the clipboard All Year, only to be used in Emergency situations then release him at the end of the year, then either draft or trade for his replacement, a TRUE franchise QB.

Poor, poor misguided DB55, even if Winston went out and committed murder, he would still be on here every day blindly defending his idol and favorite Criminole

There are probably many more examples of prison time for that offense but I simply don’t have time to try to fight the spam filters sending then to you

  46. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Bonzai

Yes….we have no absolute proof that it happened but to assume that it did happen and try to excuse it as an OK act is absurd…..

Defend Winston if you wish….but don’t minimize the action itself….

  47. DB55 Says:

No I’ll take it. The most I found was community serve and it wasn’t in the US.

  48. SB Says:

DB all over JW’s Jock as usual.” Garnet and Gold til ya die”, right. Some people are on the extreme JW supporter side, some are (maybe justly so ) on the Cut Winston side. Most of us though are right in the middle. See it for what it is. If I have Never been accused of theft nobody sees me as a thief. If I am accused twice and go through Years of legal process’ to not suffer consequences, a Bunch of people are going to still believe that I’m a thief and used my position in Society and my $ to get out from under it.

I’ll read it in a second, I’m currently reading an article about a suit filed against DT by a 13 yr old. And one of his former wives (Ivana) accusations. And about 16 others so it might be a while.

    Case: 1:16-cv-04642, SDNY

  50. Defense Rules Says:

DB55 … Bad news: You’re not a lion; you’re one of Realist’s sheep. All I was saying to Bonzai was that the ACCUSATION of crotch-grabbing a total stranger is not the same as being out on a date with someone you know. The law CAN consider that assault (and yes, they often do), but in this case the Uber driver didn’t press charges.

And in so far as you being ‘all about facts’ that’s BS. You wildly categorize and label people more than most of the JBFers whose comments I read. Statements such as “guys who are offended didn’t get their duck wet until the got married” and “Bunch of nerds, who probably found they’re partners on match, Christian mingle or farmers dating sites” and “Most of them obviously suffer from micro-p and low testosterone” are proof. You’re not about FACTS at all. You’re about labeling and innuendo.

  51. Dooshlarue Says:

    Capt. Tim

    I hear ya.

JW’s overall behavior is the thing, not just the “hassle”.
You tallied up what he’s done in the NFL and it ain’t pretty.
The JW jock-riders mistake that behavior for passion I suppose and are afraid of losing him and him becoming great somewhere else.
Doubtful at best. I say he winds up playing baseball.

I think realistic fans see that this is a pattern, a serious flaw in his character and we need to move on.
We have a strong nucleus of players to build on and we don’t need this sh!t!

  56. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Now I’m on record numerous times asking fans to give Jameis another (perhaps 3rd) chance…..
I don’t know if he did it…..but he did at least attempt to hide it and that’s not good.

But, I will not defend that sort of behavior from anyone….it is flat out wrong.

  57. DB55 Says:

Yea but it will highlight the total hypocrisy of some of the fans.

Personally I’d love nothing more than to see jw on another team.

I asked this earlier in the week, what are all you Jameis sould be cut today guys going to do when he comes back and starts week 4 or 5? Are you actually going to openly root against him unlike before when you just did in silence?

  62. csidedave Says:

To DB55 and other defenders. I was an ardent defender of Jameis Winston, enough so that I lost a few friends over it. This time I was convinced that it was mistaken identity and I believed him though I did say that if the accusations turned out to be true, I would change my mind. It’s the lying and deceit that did it for me.

Somebody extremely close to me was coddled through Middle and High School because he was extremely talented and everyone was so happy just to have him there even though he never had to work hard. Once he got to college, everything changed because they would not tolerate his behavior. He was kicked out and honestly it was the best thing that ever happened to him. Somebody finally stood up to him. He became a much better person as a result. Maybe Jameis needs to have someone stand up to him too. He could be stronger in the long run. Those who continue to defend him are not doing him any favors.

  63. JabooBuc Says:

Ndog- it’s an interesting question. Thankfully for JW and the Bucs, game 4 & 5 are on the road. Pretty good chance that if he comes back after at least losing 1 of those games, the boo’s will rain down. That’s assuming anyone actually pays to go to the game.

  64. csidedave Says:

If I am the owner and still believe in Jameis, I would add 5 games to the suspension and make it half a year.

  65. JBFG Says:

    Did I miss Thursday’s podcast?

  66. Capt.Tim Says:

    No proof he did?
    Lol
Of course theres proof. The lying and colussion with Ronald Darby,The video from the fast food restaurant, his fingerprints on the steering wheel, etc.
But part of the arrangement with the NFL, was that he issued an apology, and doesnt fight the suspension.
And The NFL doesnt release details, and futher damage his already Sh*tty reputation.
NFL always protects the brand, and its players

If they didnt have absolute evidence, Jameis would have fought it! He has tens of millions if dollars at stake-
Are you really stupid enough to believe he gave all that money up- based on hear say??

He did it, and they had him.
Its called sexual assault- and there are a THOUSANDS OF GUYS IN JAIL/Prison for that.

Right now, the NFL is using its considerable influence- to pursuade Arizona not to file charges. They still might.
He’s fing Lucky that the young lady driver isnt a gold digger- because she has him by the shorthair. She could have taken this public- and drug”Americas sex offender” thru the mud- revealing all the scummy details

But, some one else will soon enough

  67. Knoxville Buc Fan Says:

I often wonder is every NFL City/Fan Base like the one in Tampa. You have a few radio personalities and one former personality who now has a podcast reaching 20 or 30 people a day. Oh and the Joes… one newspaper now with a few writers. So much getting blown out of proportion,it’s crazy! What the hell did JW ever do to y’all? If I were him After my suspension I’d take my job back and lead my team like I know I can. Especially now that the defense is stronger, offense should be improved with a running game. I’m rooting for the kid. I’d love to see him at the final home game with a playoff berth secured and then when y’all are looking for a story to write about the season from his perspective, he just quietly says write this. Y’all can just kiss my a$$ and GO BUCS

  68. Skipper Says:

What a fan you are csidedave. Winston is paying the price big time, 3 game suspension, lost revenue, lost ground in future negotiations and has been tarnished in the media. I think he is and will pay his dues. I for one am familiar with the many good deeds he has done, the Christmas shopping for under privileged comes to mind. He screwed up and I will support him getting the help he needs and firmly believe he will be a great QB for the Bucs franchise.

  69. BrianBucs Says:

If you look all around the league, you don’t see any other of the starting WQB’s acting the way Winston does, getting in trouble the lying to everyone about it. They know how a QB should act and represent their team. Winston is the only one who doesn’t “get it”

  70. Roy T. Buford Says:

@BrianBucs…I remember last year Cam Newton got excoriated for how he treated a female reporter. Pretty much the response was “what a jerk” and I was glad at least Jameis didn’t do that. Of course, we know now he’s done things much worse and of course, was concealing the “hassle” then and pretending to be Mr. Clean all along. We don’t see the lying from and all the sexual contact allegations against Brees, Ryan, Manning, Mariota, Geoff, Trubisky, Flacco, Wilson, Brady…you name it. Yeah, we got stuck with a real gem…even worse than Carolina’s QB…who at least performs on the field.

  71. Roy T. Buford Says:

^^^And what I mean by what Jameis much worse that we know of (maybe more) is lying about this Uber driver’s account about being alone with her…putting the whole hassle on her….even Cam didn’t do that stuff.

I remember my buddy a Steeler fan telling me the Steeler fans were up in arms over Big Bonehead in 2010 and wanted him traded to the Raiders. lol. He served a 4 game suspension and the Steelers played Green Bay in the Super Bowl in Feb 2011. Crickets ever since……………………………………

  74. Buccan8 Says:

All Pete needs is a tooltip on the “Submit Comment” button so he knows that it’s not a carriage return, but a posting of a comment. Or at least a built in programmatic feature that takes multiple comments in a row by The Pedro and displays them as Pete I, Pete II, Pete III, etc. lemme know if u need some help with that, Joe….

  75. mark2001 Says:

DB55 “Can anyone make a Fitz statement without using the word if?”…change “Fitz” it to say “Fitz and Jameis”, and you have it right.

Pete is the new Tmaxacon…or lawnmower man. I don’t think we will be able to get rid of him so we might as well add a few other virus’s.

  77. Should have Says:

We just need to admit that the bucs f’ed up again with winston. Mariota would have been the better and safe pick. just like when raheem screwed us with the freeman pick, lovey screwed us with Winston. Hopefully we can find another brad johnson in free agency next year.

No more excuses. It is what it is… he has problems: cant throw the long ball, cant stop molesting women, fake pre game speeches, fumbles, throws dumb picks.

    We screwed up.

I would love to hear your thoughts ::facepalm::

  81. BucNole Says:

    @captTim

“The video from the fast food restaurant, his fingerprints on the steering wheel, etc.”. . . . “And The NFL doesnt release details. . . ”

Very interesting info you have there – gotta a link???
This is the first I have heard about this – How did you come across these “facts?”
Kinda find it hard to believe forensic evidence such as this would still exist 2 yrs later – enlighten us all please.

“Bucs fans always want to get rid of people, but the usual outcome from that has been more often than not been disaster.

    Michael Bennett
    LaGarrette Blount
    Aqib Talib
    Darrelle Revis
    Jameis?

    (That’s just this decade.)”

Joe, are you sure the fans wanted all those guys gone? Some seem more like out and out organizational decisions.
