Waiting game.
Bucs fans are understandably nervous.
As all of Bucs fandom awaits a potential sentence and suspension of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, by NFL strongman Roger Goodell, what happens if Jameis is suspended?
Of course, the voice of Tallahassee radio, Jeff Cameron of ESPN Tallahassee, who has strong contacts close to Jameis, reported yesterday that Jameis’ camp is bracing for a suspension, possibly up to three games for his alleged hassle with an Uber driver in Arizona.
No one short of potentially Goodell knows for sure what the ruling will be. And if Jameis is suspended, what then?
Joe suspects if the Bucs get off to an ugly start while Jameis serves his time, and the team never recovers, that Bucs coach Dirk Koetter and his staff may just get a mulligan from Team Glazer. Naturally, there would be deciding factors.
For example, if the team, as a result of a suspension to Jameis, throws in the towel on the season, not unlike what happened in 2011 under Raheem Morris, that likely would doom Koetter. And if the defense is still horrid against the pass, specifically in the secondary, Joe is confident defensive coordinator Mike Smith’s status for a fourth season with the Bucs would be in grave jeopardy.
Remember: No coach Team Glazer has hired has survived two consecutive losing seasons with one exception. That would be the same guy who won the team’s lone Super Bowl.
If Jameis is suspended for multiple games, it could be Koetter’s get-out-of-jail-card to navigate a brutal schedule.

In the 2 yrs Dirk has been the HC, Bucs could’ve thrown in the towel at several key points after long losing streaks (mid-season 2016 & 2017, end of 2017) but instead they continued to fight (and even beat the Saints in a tough game to end 2017). This team is behind this coaching staff 100% from everything I see, and that’s one of the things I really like about Dirk & Smitty. Whether the Bucs have the horses to win might be a whole different question.

I have to admit I was excited to see how Bucs would handle the beginning of the season against the best of the best. It would have been a true measure to see how the off-season draft and free agents worked out ?
Well… that is about to be pearl harbored as the Joe’s call it by this suspension.
Just unacceptable. Shame shame shame It’s time for Jameis to take next step more then ever. No more excuses.
I almost think they should appeal so suspension maybe gets postponed a game. That way they can play up in New Orleans where Joe’s have confirmed bucs do well early and saints have lost several season openers.
Then steelers and eagles. Well …no offense but I had those down as NON – Ws. They can beat Chicago without Jameis if it turns out to be three games.

Contrary to popular belief by some (and maybe yourself), one player’s outcomes don’t torpedo this team in the same sense that Winston himself cannot get us to the playoffs. If he gets the max of 3 games as some speculate, I still think we can get at least 1 win with Fitz at the helm. This isn’t an indictment on Winston, it’s an indictment that perhaps we’re an improved team and that Fitz is a more than serviceable backup.

Bottom line is this, whatever the league was going to do they were going to do but if it was not getting any media attention at all the likelihood of a suspension wold get smaller and smaller. Then enter JoeBucsFan with a question and every NFL event. No matter what anyone says this obsession with this from this site has hurt this team and this fan base period. Cause if it was or was not brought up daily you could still have reported on the results either way but due to your approach, much like ESPN you are part of the story. Long story short you can’t find a article on the Internet that does not tie any recent news on this to JoeBucsFan. Congrats to you but just know you are a major part of hurting all of you our customers no matter what you tell yourselves. Enjoy

Now that the King Roger Goodell has waited so late into the off-season, The Real fans will have no choice, but to hand out a huge pass to the coaching staff!!!!!! If it is a 2 or 3 game suspension, that means that the QB will sit out 3-4 weeks play one game and then hit the bye week!!!!!! To play only 1 game in almost 2 month span will throw any rhythm, timing and/or cohesiveness!!!!!!

Joe, there will be no suspension. I am glad the suspension talk is giving you and Jeff Cameron a ratings (made profootball talk last night) bonaza during the offseason. However, it is a bit premature to dictate that a suspension is pending. Why would the suspension need to pend? If the NFL feels it is in their right to suspend wouldn’t they already have done so? The draft has been over with for weeks and the nfl also had a chance to suspend for allegedly violating said policy on numerous occassions since the playoffs ended leading up to the draft.
The NFL simply can’t suspend Jameis Winston as the rule at the time, unlike currently, did not call for players to report allegations, period. You can punish the team with a fine, etc., but if the nfl tries to levy a suspension it will lose in court. It is also a bad precedent that I doubt the nfl really wants to start, especially with the looming cba. If there was concrete evidence to suspend Winston for his actions it would have been done so a longtime ago.

Funny how none of this supposed savant in Cameron, or recent coverage on JBF, had the detail in depth on the distinction between how the former rule for player report when the act allegedly occurred, versus the current rule under the conduct policy. That…is the entire issue.

First off, anyone who says this is not talked about elsewhere clearly has not paid attention. Joe links to other media sources in most of his posts.
Secondly, to think that anything Joe says will effect things is dumb. Goodell is constantly getting negative publicity from hundreds of blogs. One voice won’t stand out that much to him.
And finally, taking the case to court would not happen. Doing so would alienate Goodell in the case of future suspensions, if they are ever considered.
And Goodell has overstepped his authority on many occasions. How many times was he taken to court for it? And, if any, how many cases has he lost? None.
To think that Jameis would be any different is ignorant.
An appeal? Maybe. But I find even that doubtful.

But Koetter is going nowhere either.
Personally, I hope the defense does so well that Smith gets another HC job elsewhere.

If King Roger doesn’t believe Jameis’s story, or if he’s found to be the only guy in the car, or if Roger thinks in the loosest sense JW harmed the NFL image by either doing what is alleged or by lying, he can be suspended. If we’ve learned anything from Brady/Zeke lessons it’s take the lump because the courts will decide in favor of the NFL and the CBA terms…
Don’t forget, the players association (union basically) agreed to the CBA that gives Roger the power, in return for some things (like harshness of suspension, drug testing, etc) that the players wanted. Goodell isn’t trying to make nice nor is the NFLPA. And certainly not on this measely case.
In short, Jameis has screwed himself if he lied or misbehaved, and his fans who play good money to see his (backup) play.

@Bonzai…you could be right…but optics on the GM in the midst of a dumpster fire is important to ownership. I don’t have an issue with any of the top 3 coaches or GM. I hate the idea of replacing any of them before three straight losing seasons. Though I’m more inclined to dump Smith first.

With an entire off-season to prepare there are ZERO excuses for this team, none! So what if Jameis is suspended?! The Eagles lost their starting QB and won the freakin’ Super Bowl with a back-up.
If this team is not prepared to play without Jameis, it does NOT warrant a “mulligan” or a “pass”! What it means is that this coaching staff is incompetent and should’ve been fired after 2017. Anyone who thinks otherwise has their head in the sand!
Need I remind you that Fitzy won games for us in relief?!

That’s the thing, “IF (keyword) King Rodger doesn’t buy his story.” I don’t mean “concrete evidence” in terms of a being found guilty in the court of law. Concrete evidence in the NFL is a much lower standard ala reasonable doubt or probable cause. Which if it is a lower standard, that NFL would have had ‘concrete evidence’ to nail Winston to show that it was only him in the car with the driver as the driver alleged when the groping took place, even if he was in the back of the car with her alone and truthfully did not touch the driver.
The conduct policy and policy in which you must report any allegations to the NFL are two different things. Legally, the only way the NFL can suspend Winston is they can show he was the culprit as the reporting policy for players was not instituted until after the initial allegations occurred with the driver.

Let me say this at the outset. I am a Jameis supporter…if he’s suspended for four games and Fitz goes 4-0 I would still expect to see Jameis start game 5.
Point is Jameis is the future…Fitzpatrick is insurance.
Having said that unlike some here I feel Fitzpatrick is good insurance. While I accept Joe and other’s points about Koetter gettings some slack if we start the season without Jameis for four game….NOT FROM ME.
This team can win with Fitzpatrick. Again I realize Jameis gives up better odds but that doesn’t mean Fitz can’t win with this team….it just means that two areas we’re all counting on anyway are no longer optional. IF the Barber/ROJO tandem produces a good running game…and if our defense is as improved on the field as it is on paper….we can win with Fitz…just like we won with Brad…or the Ravens won with Trent…although I’m not talking SB just the playoffs here.

If the loss of one player, for three games, can torpedo an entire season, then I think that gives even more of a reason to fire EVERYONE.
Its not like this will be a surprise and the entire team will be forced to immediately adjust to a “new” hurdle.
Quite frankly, this is the problem. From the first day Winston walked in, all the responsibilities for wins and losses were placed on his shoulders. Koetter needs to look hard in the mirror and figure out ways to win. Period. Winston may become a super elite QB but he isn’t yet, so trying to equate a loss of Winston to losing a Rodgers, Brady or Rivers isn’t apples to apples. All I’ve heard around here is that Winston is average at best. So if losing one average player for three games, even at QB, gives the coaches an excuse to post a losing record, then the rest of the roster has to be MUCH worse than anyone believes.

This whole NFL judicial system is a fking joke. I’m not saying I want to let anybody get away with murder or beating women, but people have lives outside of work and sometimes it’s not the employer’s business what happens away from the job.
I buy merch and watch the games for what they do on the field. I don’t care what the do in their free time. They’re 25 year olds with more money than I can dream of ever having, they’re probably gonna do some stupid stuff at some point.

why would this staff get a pass….
in 2015 while we were sitting at 6-6 kwon got suspended….we lost the last 4games without our defensive captain….not only was he the captain but he was/is the heart and soul of the defense…..
no one gave the previous staff a pass….why?…because they said they staff knew about the suspension since TC…..folks said the staff should’ve been prepared…..so why doesn’t this apply to the current staff…..
this staff does not deserve a pass!!!!!!…..they have more than enough talent to overcome a 4 game slump at the beginning of the year!!!!!…….they’ve had more than enough time to form a plan around fitz and get him prepared…..

I certainly do not mean to compare the skill level of our defense to that of the great Bucs or Ravens units. But I’m not talking championship here…we do need Jameis for that…but the playoffs should still be in reach.
Fitz doesn’t win games for us…he doesn’t lose them either…we don’t get Jameis’ game busting big plays…but we also do not get as many bad decisions.

I’m used to dealing with real courts, where before a punishment can be imposed it must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt, and the accused is afforded due process.
Unlike this nebulous “reporting” requirement, which is so broad you could argue almost anything has to be reported if a player becomes aware of it. If it were written in criminal court it would be immediately stricken.
Horrendous thing to watch, and astonishingly heavy handed if the underlying “incident” was proven to be unsubstantiated.
Sadly, these reports seem to ring true and I am afraid no number 3 at the beginning of season is almost a given now.

Policy as of March 2016 when the allegations took place.
“Reporting – Clubs are obligated to promptly report any matter that comes to their attention
(through, for example, victim or witness reports, law enforcement, media reports) that may constitute a
violation of this Policy. Clubs are expected to educate their employees on this obligation to report.
League employees who are aware of an incident that may violate this Personal Conduct Policy have a
similar obligation to report the matter. Reports should be made to any of Robert Gulliver or Tara Wood
of Human Resources, Jeffrey Miller of NFL Security or Adolpho Birch of the Management Council legal
staff. Questions about whether an incident triggers a reporting obligation should be directed to a member
of the Management Council legal staff.”

The Buccs are only to make Winston aware that they, not Winston, have to obligation to report any allegation of misconduct to the NFL. Winston is thus not obligated to tell his own team anything per the wording of the policy in march of 2016, just that he is aware the team is mandated to tell the league should any report come against one of their players. This policy never mentions the players are obligated to tell their team, which is obligated to tell the nfl.
This policy was updated to specify that players are now obligated to report incidents themselves to the league:
Clubs and players are obligated to promptly report any matter that comes to their attention (through, for example, victim or witness reports, law enforcement, or media reports) that may constitute a violation of this Policy. Clubs are expected to educate their employees on this obligation to report. Club reports should be made to NFL Security or Adolpho Birch of the Management Council legal staff. Questions about whether an incident triggers a reporting obligation should be directed to Adolpho Birch or Lisa Friel of the league office.

Is it just me or did a team that lost their starting QB last season win the Super Bowl?
That’s the bar. Don’t lower it if you’re pretending to try and build a contender. A contender is a team that could still win 8 games without their starting QB. Otherwise, they’re simply a fragile house of cards and the systems the coaching staff has in place would have to be considered suspect at best.
Look at the Patriots during the season Brady missed and during his suspension games. They won A LOT.
Why does Koetter deserve a mulligan? THIS season is his mulligan. Coaches can’t be solely judged on how things go when everything is perfect because very seldom are things ever perfect.
Win or hit the road. 4 seasons is enough to right the ship.

I’m going to the New Orleans game either way but man it’d suck that the only game i can attend is the one he misses.
Here’s to rooting for (at worst) a 1 game suspension that he appeals and the appeal process drags this out so that at worst he takes that suspension later in the season against a sh1ttier opponent.
That way he can start the season and we can get early momentum. So f*cking sick of terrible starts to the season.

I don’t believe for a second that a suspension will happen – but IF Jameis IS suspended under these circumstances – he is obligated by what’s right to take this matter to a real court of law – and sue the NFL as well as Goodell personally for lost income and irreparable damage to his name and reputation.

This crapshow of a sports franchise ran by the incompetent glazers is much closer to 0-16 than a playoff birth regardless of suspensions. All the talent upgrades in the world cant over come the losing culture led by the weak and soft cryin clown and his merry band of paycheck thieves. Once again this franchise will be a laughingstock defended by low standard excuse making fans.

This is front page news because and insider from Tallahassee (not affiliated w/JBF) with deep ties to the Winston family is claiming that the Winston camp is expecting a suspension to be levied. How in the world would that not be big news. Truly, you must not have access to newspapers, the internet, TV, or a radio. How can you blast off on Joe when you are so uninformed.

Koetter stupidly continued to feed the disinterested Doug Martin the Ball last season.
He should have been giving that experience to Peyton Barber.
Now, we go into the season with two talented but inexperienced RBs. That will hurt the offense.
Our secondary may well be Grimes, Davis at cornerback.
Whitehead and Evans at Safety
Definitely talented, but too many rookies/1st year players.
And if Grimes pulls a hammy?
Ryan Smith, Carlton Davis at CB. Justin Evans and Jordan Whitehead/Chris Conte at safety
That group is entirely to inexperienced to succeed. They will get better. Just not this year
And while they will start VH3 in the slot, Im certain MJ Stewart will have outplayed him
2 key areas, with no experience.

I am confident the 2018 season will be over before it starts if there is a Jameis suspension.
The Bucs have a delicate psyche and going into the season without the leader of the team is a recipe for disaster.
If Jamies is suspended I see a blow out in New Orleans and a season that will look similar if not worst than last year.

the suspension is just another form of adversity…..rally the troops and fight thru it dirk!!!!!…..
Winston may miss 3games….ok….fine…theres still 13more games to be played…..those 13 will be more important than the first 3…..
if dirk and some fans think we cant make the playoffs with Winston missing the first 3games while having 13games remaining is a shame….. that explains their confidence and the competence of this staff!!!!!!!
wanting to give this staff a pass for every little adversity is an indictment on their coaching ability…..

I really appreciate the depth of your research & comments, and definitely hoping that you are right.
Big fan of Jameis and hoping he gets a full season to take the next step that I believe he is going to take this year into becoming a great Bucs QB for a very long time.

It could be that they don’t want to suspend him, and are waiting for TC to announce it so that fans will be focused on other things.
I doubt it, but its possible I guess.
