Update On J. R. Sweezy

There may be light at the end of the tunnel for J.R. Sweezy.
The Bucs’ right guard, who has missed more games than he has played since signing with the Bucs prior to the 2016 season, believes he is soon to return to the football field. That’s what he told Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times.
Sweezy broke a fibula in a home loss to the Dixie Chicks last year, ending his season. In two seasons, Sweezy has missed 18 games.
Since breaking his leg, Sweezy has been on cap patrol, watching from the sidelines. As Joe has joked in recent weeks, who the hell knows what is going on with J.R. Sweezy? Apparently, we may now know.
Sweezy, per Auman, believes he will be cleared by team doctors to resume football activities in the next “week or two.”
We shall see. There have been false alarms before. Perhaps this is why Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht told a SiriusXM NFL Radio audience there would be competition at right guard and failed to mention Sweezy’s name.

Even if he his cleared to play ball again, there’s no telling what kind of physical condition he’s in when he hasn’t even been able to use his leg. That’s after his long stint out from the back injury which likely prevented him from any physical activity. You would hope that he has still been hitting the weights and doing what he could to stay in top physical form with a broken leg, but I’m not holding my breath.

IR Sweezy gets pushed straight back on pass plays. Unless the plan is to have IR sit on Jameis’ lap for story time, dump him.

In a string of awful signings by Licht, JR Sweezy managed to be one of the worst.
Of of the 5 year 32.5 million dollar deal Licht signed him for in 2016, how much would you say the Floppy Hat Man has earned thus far?

Wouldn’t most of that 7 mil get rolled over to next years cap since it would be a post June 1st cut? That would still free up money this year to bring in a replacement if that’s how it works.

What?? If there was to be an injury settlement – it would have already happened.
Once Sweezy is medically cleared to play he is fair game to cut if the Bucs choose to do so.
Gambelero – to answer your question accurately:
Sweezy being on the Bucs roster in 2018 represents a cap hit of $7.125M.
Like all vested vets – his $6.5M salary becomes fully guaranteed if he is on the roster week 1 of the season after final cut downs.
If Sweezy is cut at any point prior to week 1 – The Bucs regain $6.5M in 2018 cap space. Take a $625k dead cap hit in 2018 – and take a $1.25M dead cap hit in 2019.
The net savings is $4.6M total. The down side is adding $1.25M to next years dead cap hit – but that’s the only way it can be done at this point – since he couldn’t be cut prior to June 1st because of his “injured” status.
If we DO hang on to Sweezy this year – it will be a similar situation/decision next year – for a bit less. $5.125M cap hit for him to be on the team in 2019 – $4.5M savings minus $1.25M dead cap hit if released for a net savings of $3.25M.

If we keep him through the 18 season, I wonder what the odds are of a late season, undisclosed injury that isn’t cleared until after June 1, 2019.

I say if he hits training camp gets through the preseason and looks like the best option at guard and by that I mean the guy next on the chart is way off highly doubt that but lets say the football gods shine fortune upon him then I think we should roll the dice but if he’s playing Mr floppy hat anytime before week 1 then cut our losses with him bye bye the risk vs reward looks way out of whack here to me imo

i think the bucs are in the Doug Martin Zone with Sweezy this season. Highly paid but cuttable on a whim. Hopefully they play that option better than they did in the past. There’s still a chance he’s the best guy or the best backup, or that he’s asked to take a paycut, but personally i think the most likely scenario is that the bucs cut him once he’s cleared healthy (no injury settlement) and they confirm that their younger linemen are up to the task in training camp.

Marpet and Dotson both ended the season on I.R., with leg injuries.
Missed the last four games.
Heres a news flash
In todays NFL, with 6’6, 320lb monsters hitting each other at max force, 60 times a game- Injuries are common.
Sweezy has been unlucky a bit here.
In Seattle, he was a damn monster.
Before we throw away another good player- who will end up signing with the Saints, and killing us,
Why not see if hes looking good in Preseason.
Sweezy and Marpet would be a great set of guards- if both are healthy.

This guy was a mauler in Seattle run blocking. His pass blocking may not be his forte. But he wasn’t bad either. With Rojo in the backfield, if Smith, Marpet set the left side and Sweezy is fully healed, this could be a good thing. Can’t call it on RG, but Wester is a tough dude, and could be an option with Dotson. That would be a pretty nasty bunch. Running the ball will be a top priority this season. Glass half full, Sweezy could be in great shape. Basically 2 seasons of fresh legs. Who knows. It would be awesome though if he caught Jensen fever and took it personal. Look thru the banter. He’s a pro. He wants to play.

As sure as thinking about Roberto Aguayo’s days with the Bucs makes me throw up a little bit in my mouth, when I see any Bucs floppy hat now, “I.R.” pops into my head and gives me a slow onset headache. I’d also love to get back to the days when Bucs play puts a shot of adenaline into my blood out of excitement vice the biological need for heavy amounts of alcohol.

Sweezy was awful last year because his back surgery cost him his flexibility and he therefore could not get low like when he was a mauler. They took Licht like a sucker. I doubt very seriously he will ever regain his flexibility no matter if his leg heals up perfectly. Here is what to do. After he claims he is well take him to a renowned back surgeon (not the Buc’s doctor) to tell Licht whether his back has regained his flexibility. If the answer is no cut or trade him immediately. Don’t let him take up a Lineman slot you may be able to give to a better candidate to help this team.
