Jameis Winston Talks AC Joint, Taking A Pitcher’s Mentality
June 12th, 2018Is America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, healthy?
He says he is, but he’s also interestingly focused on the shoulder he injured in 2017.
Speaking on the Ira Kaufman Podcast today, Jameis answered a question about whether he first injured his shoulder against the Vikings in Week 3 last season. There has been some mystery about when the AC joint in his throwing arm was first injured.
Jameis didn’t add any clarity, and he also sounded like a guy who is still trying to get back to 100 percent.
“It’s so long ago I really don’t remember when I suffered [the injury,] Jameis said. “Because I just remember playing, playing through it. That’s what I’m always going to do. I’m happy that I’m definitely feeling better. My arm feels way stronger and I’m improving.
“I think taking care of your shoulder, I view myself as like a pitcher, as in consistent work on your shoulder over and over again. But definitely with the AC joint, I took more of an initiative to make sure that my shoulder is on tip-top point throughout the entire year.”
Asked how much the injury affected him, Jameis said it’s just part of being a quarterback.
“I just believe people play through injuries all the time,” Jameis said. “You know, you really can’t determine how it affects you. All you can control is when you’re healthy or healthier, that you got to take advantage of the opportunities that you get.”
The shoulder will go down as one of the mysteries of the Bucs’ 2017 season. How much did it really affect Jameis and the rhythm of the Tampa Bay offense?
Hopefully, the shoulder will be a complete afterthought by opening day for Jameis by opening day. Lots of time between now and then to get it significantly stronger.

I’ve torn and retorn my AC Joint, 2 shoulder surgeries later and it’s never been the same. Not great news I know. He has the best people working in his Multi-million dollar shoulder though and he’s young. Fingers crossed.

I had shoulder surgery in 11/2015 to repair a large labral tear and also they shaved down the AC joint because it had become pointed and was poking into the rotator tendon. I was in PT for 6 months off & on and still have issues with stiffness from the buildup of scar tissue. The shoulder is a delicate area to say the least.

I took that as he has been working on his physical activities/workouts in the offseason to better strengthen his shoulder. It didn’t sound like he was saying he has been rehabbing it to get it back to tip top.

I believe it was in the vikes game…..VHG pulled up grabbing his hammy too in that game….other players got banged up too…..they slapped us in the mouth, spit in our face, took our lunch money and pinched our lady on the booty in that game…..

Refresh my memory. I seem to remember some question about Jameis arm before the draft. Nothing major was said or anything, but just had to wonder. Could there be some correlation to that? Joe…help me out. You know what it is like when those Illinois born and bred guys start getting older.

He’ll be alright he’s gonna wear that copper tone sleeve.

further…I think it was in some physical prior to the draft. And maybe it was the shoulder, but I thought I remember hearing arm. Does anyone else remember that?

Here it is and the link… I guess I haven’t lost it yet…
That was notable because there were reports on Friday, most notably from Doug Kyed of NESN.com, that Winston’s throwing shoulder was in bad shape: “Winston’s shoulder is ‘bad,’ a scout, who is not authorized to speak on the record, told NESN.com. The Florida State product’s shoulder won’t be an issue in the short-term, but it’s viewed as a long-term problem by this team. The injury was categorized as a ‘real issue.'”

damn….
good research…..I never heard anything about his shoulder during the draft process….but FSU is known for keeping things covered up….especially for Winston…..
folks will find a way to blame lovie not licht…..
but if this is true, that explains why lovie wanted a run heavy offense….and it also explains part of the reason why Winston cant connect with his deep ball…..and if this is true, and this staff currently knows Winston shoulder will never be a full strength, why the hell is dirk still calling 9routes……

Sooo the Glazers medical staff overlooked a well publized shoulder injury?🤔 And when JW went to Mooches training camp he had him to rotate his arm and checked it for clicking. Neither found anything! Don’t ALL ATHLETES have prior injuries? Give me a freaking break! Prior was not the problem, the problem was continuing to play after week 2’s injury!

@mark, but that clip you posted is a little misleading, because right before that, the articles says
And then after that paragraph you quotes, they wrote:
The only shoulder concern I knew of before the draft had to do with his mechanics, specifically his throwing motion and wind-up from being a pitcher.

Unbelievable…but they don’t contradict each other, do they. It said it wasn’t an issue in the short run…that workout WAS the short run. And maybe the first few seasons… But if he was right, who knows when the “long run” kicks or kicked in? Sorry about the duplication’s. It didn’t show up or register as a Duplicate post and for that I apologize to Joe.

Nole…I’m no Doctor….and agree logically, as you say, most players have issues to some degree. But if his shoulder had damage that would likely show up in the long run, and he suffered an injury or injuries that accelerated that injury and he came back too early, we could be in the “long term” area. Aren’t you concerned that this keeps popping up, when we thought it was solved?
June 12th, 2018 at 5:38 pm
The other point is, what do you do about it if it does become chronic? I don’t know.
June 12th, 2018 at 8:11 pm
I hope he’s not putting excuses out there already. You know, to soften the blow just in case he sucks. I hope not….
June 12th, 2018 at 9:05 pm
Trench…we should all hope that Jameis will be fine. I remembered something in the back of my mind I read a couple years ago regarding such things and found them in searching. And maybe it is all BS. But as this seems to be lingering, and we really have never gotten a clear picture of the problem and solution, even after, I think I remember that he got first class medical assessments from more than one doctor. It is worrisome.

agree on “worrisome” for sure. I think if Jameis still has lingering effects from his injury, he should say so now. He may not be healthy enough to be totally effective even with his heroic attempt. He could be risking the jobs of his head coach and staff. Better he come clean now. Rest that shoulder if need be. We all know Jameis is as tough as nails but a broken wing is serious. If that’s the case?
June 12th, 2018 at 10:58 pm
The pressure this year is going to be enormous on Jameis to perform on a high level. Let’s all believe Jameis can rise above it all, and be a winning, high scoring juggernaut and put the NFL on notice. ..but with a bad shoulder?
Is Jameis still hurting?
