“Him And Gerald Are Already Getting Into It”
June 1st, 2018Jason Licht’s plan may be working.
Licht got tired of seeing his linemen getting pushed around, got tired of seeing guys more concerned with banging a palm tree than listening for a hard count. You get the drill.
So in the offseason, the Bucs’ AC/DC-loving general manager decided to go get nasty guys to play in the trenches. One guy Licht used that term on more than anyone was free agent center Ryan Jensen.
Just how nasty is he? Well, this afternoon, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, did a spot on “The Blitz,” co-hosted by Alex Marvez and former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio. And Jameis had a neat story to explain just how fierce and aggressive and physical and mean Jensen is.
“Man, [Jensen] and Gerald [McCoy] are already getting into it in practice and we just have helmets on,” Jameis said. “So I really love that tenacity and that grit that Ryan brings. You have to love that out of a center.
“My first year I had Logan Mankins, that guy is a Hall of Fame offensive guard. His grit and his competitiveness, it was infectious among our offense. And it is going to be great to have a guy in the middle of it all that is leading this offensive line with that competitiveness.”
Joe thinks this is cool as hell that just in underwear football, Jensen has gotten under GMC’s skin more than once — in underwear football no less! Imagine what this guy is like when the pads come on in two months?
It sounds as if Jensen is forcing GMC to raise his game. And as Joe has written before, the Bucs in practice should put Vita Vea on Jensen and let Jensen show Vea the NFL ropes.
Yeah, it is June 1. It is underwear football. But it appears, hearing Jameis talk, Licht’s grand plan is already making an impact on the team.

Like everyone here I get that it’s only June 1st. There are no underwear football championships.
But 2017 is over and our pre season is still a couple of months away. So ALL we have is the underwear football.
Rather be getting these good reports than watching Swaggy hump a palm.
We could be getting reports of #3 re injuring his shoulder…or Spence separating his once again. I’m happy to be getting good news out of the OTA’s.

Man Joe i don’t know about Vea on Jensen. It coould urn out 1 of 2 ways, they either get in a fist fight or Vea man handles Jensen with one hand. All inknow is Vea would either result to be the biggest steal of the draft or Jensen is the key center piece to a Dallas style OLine.

Joe…somethings up with your software…hotlinks to members emails ?
June 1st, 2018 at 5:40 pm
One man can change a whole line……let’s hope we have that one man on the Oline and Dline…..
In the case of the Dline…..I think we have 3 or 4…..

lol.
Good.

Maybe he can teach McCoy how to be nasty and mean but I doubt it.if Sapp couldn’t get message across to Gerald years ago then nobody can!oh how I miss big#99 killing people on sundays.the good ol days!!
June 1st, 2018 at 6:29 pm
How exactly are they getting into it? Serious question. It is my understanding that there is no contact or bodies on bodies during these OTA’s. Just trash talking each others performance or what?
June 1st, 2018 at 6:41 pm
@chris
It’s deeper than that…think about it. Jensen no 1 priority…PROTECT the QB. So yea.. No contact…👌 he’s letting GMC see his quick get off, get off my QB.
June 1st, 2018 at 7:00 pm
Fingers crossed that this actually goes the way we’re hoping…O line and D lines that get after it and dictate play, not the other way around!
June 1st, 2018 at 7:25 pm
I think I’d worry about Jensen against Vea. Jensen has the mind set to do whatever it takes and I’m afraid he actually might hurt himself going against “The Hulk” trying to out dominate him.

We will see. Nastiness in and of itself doesn’t equal quality on Sundays. If I lined up at center and tried to punch a d tackle in the balls on every snap, it would show a lot f nastiness and force the DT to show a lot of nastiness, but I’m not sure it will make anybody better at the end of practice. I hope everyone’s technique and knowledge of the scheme is improving in the process

Haha, GMC is getting his ass kicked. Gerald needs to step it up. He gets ragdolled and blown out far too often. I hope this works and to be the best you have to beat the best. Gerald has never had anyone in practice that he couldn’t push around and now he does. Bring it or gtfo.

Chris
Good question. My guess is that it resembles some hockey fights. Players grab each other’s jerseys and attempt to throw each other around. Lot’s of sound and fury signifying nothing.
June 1st, 2018 at 9:30 pm
@BigMac,
First of all, nobody is getting anything kicked in OTA’s. That’s ridiculous. Second, Gerald has gone against Ali Marpet in practice (and Logan Mankins before that), and Ali can hold his own against anyone.
June 1st, 2018 at 9:32 pm
That’s what McCoy needs…..no more cupcake training camps got you, now your practicing against some who doesn’t care about who you are yet so it will McCoy beret this year

Didn’t know barber was a power back. Thought he was a poor mans ray rice without all the yards and TDs. When I say power back I’m talking about guys like Blount, fournette and Henry. Bo Scarborough would have been a good pick up but wtfdik?
June 1st, 2018 at 9:45 pm
Joe how can Jenson be forcing GMC to raise his game when according to you and all the othe GMC apologists he has been performing at maximum level for the last years. You claim he has given his all. Hmm sounds like your having second thoughts about the fake one.
June 1st, 2018 at 9:51 pm
Is it too late to trade GMC? Looking like camp meat when the big boys come in. Obviously a prime suspect poster child of everything wrong with the defense
June 1st, 2018 at 10:01 pm
Buc believer, easy.
Now that he won’t be double and triple teamed as the only good player on the line, he will be freed up to cut loose. He has been giving 100%, but teams sent 200-300 percent against him. Now they cannot do that.
Play that on your fiddle.
June 1st, 2018 at 10:28 pm
Banging a palm tree? That’s a visual I don’t need.
June 1st, 2018 at 10:48 pm
@Hawaiian Buc
Don’t get offended bro. I’m just having fun. But I still need Gerald to stay healthy. We will see if the investment finally pays off. I just want to win. I don’t care who how where or anything else. I don’t care about sacks, just win baby.

Bonzi- absolutely spot on. Nice to see dry land, on what is normally a sea of stupidity here.
Jensen was a backup. Got his first year starting last year, due to injury.
Gerald McCoy is started every game hes played, and the players have voted him to the Probowl 6 times.
Gerald McCoy is ragdolling Jensen. McCoy- for the first time as a Buc, wont be getting double or tripled teamed.
Hes excited about the upcoming year- and is really enjoying teaching a First year starting center the ropes.
And I guarantee its pissing Jensen off
By he way- has anyone noticed how big that guy is??biggest center Ive ever seen. Think hes bigger than Sweezy!

Gone are the days where teams are filled with men that take ultimate pride in showing up with 100% commitment to earning a paycheck and seriously leaving everything out on the field. practice, preseason, and regular season games and not just saying it when a camera or reporter is around. There’s of course s few old school guys like that around but not enough. Players today need to see a legitimate shot at playoffs and a championship season with the talent around them and 100% belief in the coaching system before they buy in and truly give it all, otherwise they don’t risk injury in order to ensure the big checks keep rolling in on Tuesdays. What we see here by McCoy and Jensen are tone setters, i’f this or any team thats been struggling gets enough tone setters it CAN begin to help the mindset of the team and bring that winning culture back.

I have a red haired freckle faced sister. As kids we all teased her with “she’s got freckles on her her face, butt she’s nice” and “I’d rather be dead than red on the head.”
