“He’s Strong As Some Of Our Linemen”

Running backs coach Tim Spencer drops an eye-opener

Yes, Jason Licht grabbed a shovel, a lasso, a checkbook and more to fortify the Buccaneers’ trenches this offseason. So the recent words of running backs coach Tim Spencer made Joe do a double take.

Is it possible that the Bucs have a just-under 5-foot-6 running back who is as strong as some linemen?

Spencer says they do.

During a chat about super-versatile and effective running back Jacquizz Rodgers, one of the great stories in football because of his size, Spencer raved about Rodgers’ blocking toughness and ability to do it all. Spencer called Rodgers a second coach at the position and then dropped this gem.

“A lot of people come in and think they knock/run Quizz over,” Spencer said of Rodgers. “Quizz might be down there but Quizz is pretty solid. I mean, he’s a solid, strong guy. He’s going to be as strong as anybody. He’s strong as some of our linemen. With technique you can block anybody, and he does a good job doing that.”

Call Joe a freak, but Joe would love to see Rodgers in some 1-on-1 pass blocking drills in training camp against the defensive linemen.

Regardless, Rodgers is one of Joe’s favorite Bucs. Unlike many others, Rodgers has done nearly every last thing asked of him. And he’s done it well.

If Quizzie is as strong as some of our linemen, we gotta get some stronger linemen.

    No disrespect to Quiz.

  2. HFXBUC Says:

If ‘quiz had to start a game or two this year, would you be horrified? Nope. Thats a good #3/4 RB to have on the roster.

A very solid player indeed. We need guys like that on the roster to average out some of the higher priced players. He is versatile and appears to stay healthy perhaps because he doesn’t get many snaps.

If Quiz has done so well, why isn’t he starting? Why did we need to draft a RB?

I like Rodgers, but he’s not a special talent and for whatever reason can’t seem to score a TD to save his life. I would think his #1 job is to score, not to block or do the little things he seems to be only good at doing.
We need to stop keeping players are only good at doing other player’s jobs and not their own.

    Hyperbole much coach Spencer??

@Joe … “just-under 5-foot-6 running back.” That’s cruel Joe. Bucs list Quizz at 5’7″. You’re understating what Jacquizz brings to the table by almost 2%. Every inch counts. Or so they say.

Maybe it’s not hyperbole. Jacquizz is short and jacked. Some of the strongest people in the world have similar builds. In his draft year he was measured at the Combine at 5’5 and 7/8″ at 196 lbs. Now he only did 225 for 13 reps which isn’t good for any weight, but his lower body might be as strong as many/most O-linemen in the league. It wouldn’t surprise me. At 5’7 1/2″ I weigh 190 and have put up 225 well past the rep ranges (25-29) of most offensive linemen at the Combine. This doesn’t necessarily make me stronger as my max is no better than 375, but I know plenty of guys under 225 that are significantly stronger than NFL linemen in their squats, max bench, deads, etc. So the fact that a dude not quite 5’6 and weighing probably well over 200 lbs might be stronger than a much softer, taller, and less dense offensive lineman… i believe it.

Uhhh, sounds like someone on #KluelessKoetters staff not doing their job then. If the lineman aren’t stronger than a damn 5’6 runnngback. Typical of Koetter not doing his job of making his asst coaches accountable and do their jobs. I’m guessing the strength coach is Koetters best friend and Koetter just lets him yell “get back” on gameday as his only job on the side line. Dang we need to get stronger upfront.

key word is some…..some lineman. Guys who will be cut

  13. William Walls Says:

I can take Spencer’s word for it that Jacquizz is as strong as a lineman. But, strength to move (or resist being moved by) another person is limited by body weight. I don’t care how much weight you can lift. If I outweigh you by 80 pounds, you’re not going to stop m when I come at you.

  14. stpetebucsfan Says:

    William,

That’s a great point and it’s even worse for an RB trying to pick up a blitz.

The force/momentum at the time of contact is equal to mass X speed. If you think this through it means if a guy is 10% larger than you, you must hit him with 10% more speed than he can reach. Can’t happen when the relatively stationary RB gets slammed by a speeding DE or LB who is also larger than the RB. That’s a classic mismatch.

So the RB just has to have enough cojones to buy some time by sacrificing his body to the on charging beast. The RB may end up on his butt but if he delays the blitzer long enough for the QB to release the pass it’s a GREAT block. Don’t need style points…just get the job done even if it means taking one for the team.

I just wish he was as fast as some of our linemen.
