“Maybe The Coaches In The Past Didn’t Have The Nutsack”

May 26th, 2018

A former Buccaneer has fired away at one of his favorite targets but is optimistic that positive change could be around the corner.

It’s easy to guess who is shooting the sharp arrows. That would be Ian Beckles, a Bucs guard from 1990 through 1996, who has been a harsh critic of Gerald McCoy for years.

The longtime sports radio host now talks football on his In The Trenches podcast with RadioInfluence.com. On his most recent episode, Beckles read fresh quotes from new Bucs defensive line coach Brentson Buckner and interpreted.

One focus was Buckner saying of McCoy, “For nine years, or eight years, he has done the same thing, been successful but has it showed up for the team?” Beckles maintains that McCoy isn’t a special player and hasn’t made those around him better, or been an effective leader.

Beckles likes that Buckner, a former standout defensive tackle himself, is already challenging McCoy and believes it might work — and it already represent a positive change.

“The thing is, when you’re going to Pro Bowls every year, maybe the coaches in the past maybe didn’t have the nutsack to sit Gerald down and say, ‘You gotta a lot of room to get better,'” Beckles speculated. “So now we have somebody who’s going to get in his ass a little bit and maybe challenge him because I’m not sure we’ve had that coach in the past or that person in the past.”

McCoy has worked under 13 defensive line coaches, which is a stunning total. Joe knows that player-turned-coaches Bryan Cox and Keith Millard drove McCoy hard, but Jay Hayes was not in that camp over the past two years.

While Beckles thinks Buckner can help McCoy, he says there are limits because he thinks McCoy’s instincts and feel aren’t what they should be and those things are not coachable.

“I think he has some shortcomings in his ability physically because he doesn’t want to reach his arms out. And reaching your arms out is essential to make tackles when running backs are running by you,” Beckles offered as one example.

Whether you buy what Beckles is selling or not, Joe is pleased Buckner has put so much early focus into McCoy. There’s undeniable talent there, and what a joy it would be if Buckner could drive McCoy to another breakthrough season like he had in 2013.

For those who think McCoy sucks, here’s a flashback to what Sean Payton responded to the McCoy haters at this year’s Pro Bowl.

GMC aka “Mr Softie” will be gone after this season…….THANK GOD!!!!!

He can take his play to another team…..I’m sure they’ll appreciate how UN-IMPACTFUL his presence or play is on their team.

Vita Vea will dominate…….so will JPP minus the ice cream man

  2. Adambomb418 Says:

If you go and watch the 4+ minutes of highlights of the Pittsburgh game referenced by Payton on NFL.com, McCoy doesn’t show up in any of them. I’m just saying.

  3. SCBucsFan Says:

Does Beckles ever have anything positive to say?

  4. Mr Ed Says:

Ian Beckles wouldn’t have been able to block #93 if Gerald had both feet tied together. When Beckles was on the Bucs they had zero winning seasons. ZERO. So Beckles has no leg to stand on, criticizing McCoy. What an empty windbag attention starved has been.

So now we know “Horse Liver” and “Mr. Ed” are the same poster. IP addresses even match! — Joe]

Beckles is an empty windbag has-been who craves attention and embarrasses himself most occasions on which he opens his piehole.

I take what Beckles says with a grain of salt and some very course..dry bread!! I remember his play..and it was not all that great here. Did he ever even get close to a pro Bowl? Beckles talks loud and says..just about what all so called sports forecasters say..Little or nothin. Bucs have made improvements on paper this season. Let see what they got. Better be good for the sake of this sorry coaching staff.

When your team embarrasses itself week in and week out and has not won a meaningful game in 16 years please explain what there is to be positive about. Franchise is a laughingstock.

All the offseason talk is fluff until they win games, stop blowing leads and play like men versus soft little girls. That is when positive change will hapen. Until then, its just the same hot air from the losers.

  8. Horse Liver Says:

And if BucAnthem ever operated a business, it would surely have gone belly up. Fortunately he’s not running the Bucs, or for that matter knows anything about football.

  9. SCBucsFan Says:

Tmax please don’t respond to my comments until you show some stones and use your real name

    Another conspiracy nut job

  11. unbelievable Says:

I’m all for seeing GMC play even better and be more dominant, but hearing from Beckles I just have to laugh.

The guy was a barely average guard, nothing more. Yet he contantly dumps on current players like he was some god from the HOF who had a flawless career.

To me he just always sounds like a bitter old man who’s jealous he can’t play the game anymore.

Also Joe, the comment form fields are killing me!

  12. Couch Fan Says:

13 Defensive line coaches. 4 Head coaches. Garbage Dline after garbage Dline. Fingers are pointed in every direction except the 1 common denominator between them all. Its amazing to me that anyone would think this guy is special. At best hes slightly above average sometimes. Whats really funny is the fan boys who think people have no right to talk about McCoys game simply because they didnt play the game at a high level themselves. LMAO. Fan boys will be fan boys.

  13. Joe Says:

    Mr. Ed:

The Hall of Fame is full of some of the smartest men in football that never played a snap in the NFL. Ability to play in the NFL has no relation in any way to discussing the game.

  14. Buc believer Says:

We have former players and current coaches calling out the soft marshmallow that is GMC yet some JBF readers are still defending her.. ahem him. SMMFH!!!

  15. Bird Says:

    SC

I think you may be right. Unfortunately “reality is a beoch “is tmax in disguise

Great. More useless negativity. Can’t believe the Joe’s let him back this early.

  16. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Bird

Joe thinks Tmax is still in the cooler…rotflmao

  17. Lamarcus Says:

GMC is hot garbage. Beckles is right. U can’t coach a guy with one signature move and can’t beat a double team. Most glaring issue…..he quits in the middle of the play.

I believe GMC literally runs into double teams to have his fan boys feel sorry for him and praise excuses for his underwhelming performances. If not, it’s a shame he hasn’t figured out to either not get doubled or beat them like the rest of the elite dts

  18. Not there yet Says:

Nothing he said was wrong in the slightest stop why cares what Sean Payton thinks. Beckles was on the money, reaching his arms out to tackle someone running by him is exactly how he tore his biceps twice early in his career…yes he had room to get better because he’s an average pass rusher and below average run stuffer. McCoy had done nothing in this league so we’ll see if he’s the same guy or will be a better player

  19. Bucsfanman Says:

Predictable posts by the same folks. HOF? Probably not! But, name a better DT the Bucs have had since Sapp. Go ahead, I’ll wait.
    …crickets! Enough said.

  20. Steven007 Says:

SC, nice job calling Trollmax (AKA: Reality) out as he’s the most transparent coward on this blog due to his one note takes and especially his hiding behind a new moniker. Ha-ha – show some stones! Good one. Jimi Hendrix even wrote a song about Trollmax: ‘Stone Free’.

  21. Duke Says:

    Mike, unbelievable,

If Ian hasn’t been successful enough to be critical of GMC, then ipso facto you two have zero to be critical of Ian . If comparing resumes w you guys I don’t believe that you two have earned anything but silence.

Basically, it’s pretty weak dic to attack the messenger not the message. But that’s the world we live in today. If you think Ian is wrong….make a case. Discounting his on field success as reason to ignore what He said is ….So flawed that the mention of discounting Bill Walsh because He doesn’t have NFL experience success as a player is unimaginable and so frankly preposterous that it should resonate with you like getting smacked in the pie hole with a dead salmon.

  22. Bird Says:

    Yah

Tmaxbabythong aka reality is a beoch tried not to use his famous cancer 93 fifteen times a day

But “hasn’t won a meaningful game in 16 years “is a dead give away. Since he has no life other than trolling the bucs , he couldn’t help but get new email address

  23. Frank Pillow Says:

Ian’s observations certainly have merit- Geraldini is a very good player who has never been able to take the next step towards being a great player- a player that makes everyone around him better. Nor has he fundamentally and positively impacted our W-L record. In terms of technique, the arms extension issue might just be Geraldini compensating for his multiple bicep tears.

  24. StPeteBucsFan Says:

13 DL Coaches and 4 head coaches and garbage DLines to work with.

Some like Couch fan somehow see that as all on GMC. Sorry guys I just don’t see it. If anything 13 DL coaches is obscene…GMC NEVER had the power to run off those DL coaches. His play did not cost them their jobs. Their COACHING and player decisions are what messed things up…not GMC.

Now even if you concede that GMC could be meaner or tougher or whatever your problem…even if you believe that GMC is no better than Swaggy…you still have to be freaking braindead to think that ONE player is the reason for the Buc’s problems. Or one coach…this has been chaos for a long time!!!

It’s the freaking NFL not the NBA. It’s the ultimate team sport…11 starters on O..11 more on D…ST’s…all the coaches….ONE guy cannot deep six a team for more than one season and even that guy would probably need to be a QB.

The Bucs have sucked for a LOT of reason…and MANY players and coaches have contributed to that suckitude. If one guy could destroy a team then it wasn’t a team to begin with.

  25. gotbbucs Says:

I’m not a big McCoy fan, but I don’t completely blame him for everything either. He’s been over valued by every regime that has come and gone and so too with the current one… until now.
They’ve always tried to build the defense with the idea that McCoy would be able to supplement for deficiencies elsewhere, and he can’t. He’s a one trick pony that should have only been used on obvious passing downs.

  26. Couch Fan Says:

And some guys really should learn how to read if you are going to make a point. I never said anything about it all being GMC’s fault. But what I did point out is that GMC is the common denominator through all the DLine and head coaches and all the garbage DLine play that we’ve had. As well as the finger pointing at everyone BUT GMC… Kind of like exactly what StPeteBucsFan just did in his rant to try to mitigate the fact GMC is just not that good and is every bit as responsible for the absymal Dline play as anyone else that you’re pointing your fingers at. But please continue telling us things we already know and trying to twist and skew to make GMC look like some great player. LMAO I love it.

  27. BucEmUp Says:

I can’t stand beckles, but he may be right for once. The effort level may go through the roof for the entire line, for about three weeks until they all give up realising there isn’t enough time to get there with zero coverage soft tackling.

    Worst DC in the league

  28. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

You conspiracy nuts are so afraid of the truth you freak out when faced with reality. You gals should start a bridge club for gossip hour. Wacko jacko all of you.

  29. Bob in Valrico Says:

What other Dlineman on the Bucs had 33 solo tackles, 6 sacks , and 13 tackles for a loss on the Bucs. Most players that are willing to put in the work make themselves better. Its gotta come from within . Beckles keeps making the statement that its McCoY should make everybody better and its often repeated
    as fact on this site.
    @Duke ,enjoy your posts.
But IMO opinion much of the McCoy hate is driven by jealousy of his 93 million salary . I have to wonder if some of Beckles criticism is driven by this. Beckles has a right to his opinion, but to me it it would hold more water if he had actually played defense.

  30. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    Bob in Valrico

He just joins a long list of good but not great players who spent thier careers last in the division.

  31. DB55 Says:

I just met booger McFarland at Home Depot. I honestly think I could hit these guys no problem. They not that big at all but wtfdik.

  32. SB Says:

“but wtfdik.”………..I am going to not touch that one.

  33. Tony from L.A. Says:

    This is dumb.
    Really dumb.

    Such a negative sports town.
Yes, let’s attack Winston and McCoy and the handful of other truly talented players on the team repeatedly, make them hate Tampa and not focus the blame on how bad the team’s #10-53 players have been on the roster all of these years.

Yes – defensive tackles are known in NFL history for being the position responsible for making all the other players better. they are not space eaters who open up lanes for DEs and LBs – no, they are responsible for EVERYTHING.

    Come on.

  34. Joe Says:

    DB55:

Don’t be foolish. Lot of these guys including Booger have slimmed down since their playing days.

  35. Duke Says:

    Bob,

    Thank you Sir.

In ‘re; Ian, like many people, tends to focus on GMC for the simple fact that He’s the voice of team and has been for some time. That and the fact that He seems to avoid the media criticism. He’s the guy out front and Ian has said that the local media likes too much to question him. I think it’s a little more likely that Ian believes GMC has everyone but him fooled.

The fact that Ian was an offensive lineman actually strengthens his position. He has watched hrs and hrs of film preparing to block d linemen. He knows what to look for in terms of strength and weaknesses of opposing players. If He was not extremely good at this His career would be a single season. So He is better positioned than a defensive player.

  36. DB55 Says:

    Joe,

You should have seen me in my prime! Lol.

  37. Reach87 Says:

Valid observations and arguable position. Notice he did NOT call McCoy soft, a diva, a she, or out of his name. Had he done so , I’d put him right into the moron club that frequents this site. Go Bucs!

  38. JimmyJack Says:

McCoy had his time with this team. It is basically over. Just take a look at his stats in the last 3 years. They are going down, down and down. His stats are nof misleading. His overall play and effectiveness has been getting equally worse.

He was an absolute non factor in the first half of 2017. Part of the reason we started so poorly.

His career is winding down and he never lead us anywhere. He is not the future and any winning this team will ever do will be because of somebody not named McCoy.

TBH Im very glad we are moving on from the McCoy era…….Or as I like to call them……The hopeless years.

  39. Grt1 Says:

So you guys want to get rid of our most disruptive D lineman? Ok who do we replace him with? He’s also the number 2 ranked DT in the game, so do we get Aaron Donald to replace him. Because that’s the only logical solution in this win now season. I’m open to other LOGICAL suggestions.

  40. Mike in LOL Says:

Seriously @Grt1 people are so dumb… why would you want to replace a good player with an average player… it’d be like someone owning a mustang GT 500 and saying it’s not fast enough so they trade it in for a Prius…

Some people man… poor DB has to make himself seem big and bad and tough behind the screen.. let’s see you be a real man about it and take a video confronting a player at training camp this spring…I bet even the kickers would kick your sorry ass

  41. DB55 Says:

So what’s with the user name? Is that meant to discourage us from spamming? Gonna suck when the arguing commences.

  42. DANR Says:

McCoy doesn’t want to reach his arms out? that’s how he tore 2 pecs. perhaps he has learned its better to stay on the field than attempt to arm tackle instead of trusting your linebackers to be home and make the tackle. This is classic ‘do your job’ and trust others to do the same.

This is WEAK analysis. it may be accurate, but its also close-minded on perspective.

  43. BigMacAttack Says:

I’ve criticized GMC and I think a lot was deserved. He needs to live up to his potential. I sure hope he doesn’t have any injuries this season. And I want him to succeed in the worst way. He has the support now beside him. Make it happen.

  44. Capt.Tim Says:

McCoys play will be greatly improved, because he finally has some help on the Defensive line.

Not because of Buckner- who has yet to coach a great Defensive line

Not Because of Ian Beckles, who went from a sh*tty guard to a Dumb f*ck commentator- with an audience of 4 or 5( Tmaxipad, DB55, Lamarcus, and a couple other “special kids”)

That Anthem thinks Vea, an immobile nose tackle- would suddenly develop the explosiveness to play 3 technique- shows such a fundamental lack of football knowledge!
Its an embarrassment to Tampa football fans.
No, its so fing stupid- its an embarrassment to intelligent people

  45. Capt.Tim Says:

The only opinion that matters- is that of the other players.
The players he plays against every Sunday.

And they keep voting him as a top 2 defensive tackle, and Probowl after Probowl.
Anyone who thinks their opinion is more accurate than the active Players, is unspeakably stupid.

Ian”on his butt” Beckles is jealous, because the only thing he every got voted- was most likely to get knocked on his keister every play.

  46. joestang Says:

how many pro bowls has beckles been to? He sucked

  47. Owlykat Says:

This will all be moot by the end of this season because the double team will be trying to constrain Vea from pushing the Center back over their QB and I don’t believe just one Offensive Lineman will be able to stop McCoy from doubling his sack total and otherwise disrupting the backfield on almost every play. Besides we will be platooning to keep our first string DL fresh for the whole game. Just wait til the end of this season and then evaluate McCoy. And remember Buckner will be teaching him ways to make his game more successful too!

  48. Mike Says:

GMC has been battling injuries. Plus defense has been on the field a lot. He is an easy target because he is one of the faces of the franchise! He is still a top D-Line guy! However I wish he would take a more back seat role and just play the game. I didn’t like his comment about Vita Vea with the cartoon movie reference. Just show up and play this year his impact will be seen and his numbers won’t lie! Us fans in Tampa tend to lash out at players to much when really the blame can be spread around from ownership on down! With all the offseason moves I think this team will be better. Unfortunately we have a real tough schedule this year. Plus the division is already tough… Good Luck Bucs
