Potential Eagles Trade Looms

May 5th, 2018

Interesting developments have Joe hearkening back to what general manager Jason Licht did last season with newly-signed free agent safety J.J. Wilcox.

You remember Wilcox, he was a key March 2017 signing and then was traded to the Steelers before the season kicked off. The Bucs had snagged weed-whacked safety T.J. Ward and Wilcox became expendable.

Fast-forward to this offseason, when the Bucs signed defensive tackle Beau Allen, a rotational player with the Super Bowl champion Eagles. Allen was beloved in Philly but, like most Super Bowl teams, the Eagles couldn’t pay everyone and Allen brought his run-stuffer game to Tampa.

One guy the Eagles did pay was defensive tackle Tim Jernigan, whose salary sort of pushed out Allen.

Philly traded for Jernigan in April, paid him a giant new deal in November, and then just cut back his contract this week after he blew out his back this offseason during an undisclosed activity and had disc surgery. He is highly questionable for opening day.

The Eagles also have a question mark with their new defensive end/tackle Michael Bennett, who could get suspended for allegedly shoving a woman in a wheelchair. He was indicted in March.

This has Joe thinking the Eagles are yearning to have Allen back on their roster, where he missed just one game over the past four years.

With the Bucs drafting Vita Vea (Allen must have felt like he had his groin kicked) and newcombers Vinny Curry and Mitch Unrein having loads of experience and decent success playing defensive tackle, it’s reasonable to think Licht and the Eagles might start talking about possibilities once training camp ends.

If the Bucs’ D-line stays healthy, and Stevie Tu’ikolovatu (last year’s seventh-round pick) looks like he can contribute, Joe easily could see Licht and the Eagles making a deal to send Allen back to Philly.

Something to file away in the back of your mind — and a peek into how Joe’s Bucs obsession operates on a lazy May weekend.

  1. Baz Says:

I see your point Joe, but hell to the no! They can stay screwed on their defensive line while we stay deep in our rotation!

  2. ATrain Says:

    NOooo
We need his play to change the culture of this defense

  3. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

No. Joe, you are failing to realize that Licht wants Vea all the Dlineman he signed/ traded for to be part of a rotation.

Just like he still wanted Cameron Brate on the team after drafting O.J. Howard. It’s part of his plan.

  4. Reverse Joe Says:

First, why make things up and insult Joe? Second, the Doug Martin comment on the podcast was to drive home a point that the Bucs’ evaluation of running backs is suspect and unpredictable. The same Joe was widely criticized for saying Charles Sims was very likely to be re-signed. –Joe

  5. I Bleed Pewter and Red Says:

Wait till after we play Philly. It would be a travesty if Allen were to be the deciding factor in a Buc loss. We have our proverbial foot on their throats so let’s not let up and give them a weapon to use against us.

  6. darin Says:

Gona need Beau and all those big nasty boys. Long season and need a rotation. Like Baz said screw those eagles. Let them figure it out without the bucs help.

  7. Trench War Says:

Unless it’s the Eagles next years first round pick I wouldn’t even entertain a deal that strengthens there defense with them on our schedule early. Sorry Eagles …no take backs

  8. AlteredEgo Says:

Nope….their problem not our’s….too solve…unless Jameis is in “noderation”…then perhaps as the season turns into 2019 talk…a trade at he deadline

  9. Dewey Selmon Says:

    Depth and injuries.

  10. Reverse Joe Says:

Also I am not even sure the Eagles have the cap space to take on Beau Allen’s contract. And I just checked overthecap.com, and maybe…..maybe they could for Vinny Curry because he is taking up 6,000,000 in dead cap space and they have only appox 1,000,000 left in cap space so…….as Lex Luther said in the Brandon Routh (crapshow) Superman movie…….’WROOOONG!!!!” Sorry you guys goofed up here. And last why would the Bucs trade Vinny Curry or anyone on this line especially when this offseason has been about improving the defensive line??? I mean come on!

  11. Dave Pear Says:

Yeah. Let’s help those poor Eagles out.
    Boo efing Hoo.

  12. NFLNut Says:

If we could trade him and maybe a low round pick for Ronald Darby, yes!

  13. old time buc Says:

Ah, I did enjoy the responses and naturally agree with them. I don’t hate the Eagles but I am a Buc fan. GO BUCS!

  14. Dooshlarue Says:

We could always cut out the cancer and offer GMC for a couple of draft picks and fast track our new nasty Defensive with more fresh talent next year.

  15. Jjones Says:

Don’t know why we would ever help the Eagles out in any way shape or form. We would need a kings ransom to even entertain the idea. Personally I’d tell them to go pound sand.

  16. Defense Rules Says:

Beau Allen & Vita Vea are the Bucs’ future. I know the Derby’s getting ready to run in a couple minutes, but seriously Joe, you need to stay away from those Mint Julips. They’re causing you to write some downright crazy stuff.

  17. Rob Says:

Screw that noise. Injuries always seem to happen to the Bucs and we can’t afford to trade away a quality defensive lineman, especially to an NFC team we play this year. Tell the Eagles to pound sand, unless they are willing to give up at least a second or third rounder. Go Bucs!

  18. Not there yet Says:

I don’t think so. Surely I expect McCoy to get injured in fact it’s one of those things he’s consistent at. Besides that’s not how you treat a guy who turned down less money because of the deal he already had in place with us.

Even if we were to trade him back to the eagles who we play early in the year, you don’t do that favor for them until after we’ve played them. How would a draft pick for next year be worth it if your team doesn’t win this year, nope not a consideration until we know what kind of worth he has in season. I think you guys are too old to be playing Madden

  19. LostinPA Says:

We need Allen to bring Vea along slowly and through rotation. If they are going to offer us a primos pick like a 2nd I’d take the deal. 3rd or 4th i’ll Wait till week 3.

  20. Waterboy Says:

Nooo I don’t see that happening.

  21. Destinjohnny Says:

We aren’t a playoff team so why not.
You need to draft well then when you are almost there… Then sign free agents much like we did in 02.
We need draft picks. Our left and right tackles need upgrading as does the guard position. We also need a free and strong safety.
    I’d trade djack as well.

  22. JimmyJack Says:

Fail to see what this has to do with Wilcox. It’s not like Licht didn’t know Vita was a major possibility in the draft when he brought in Allen. Licht surely has the draft in mind when he commits money to free agents.

  23. JimmyJack Says:

And thinking Vita comes in and gives us 16 stud games while taking a ton of snaps which means we can trade away our depth is an awful thought. This is how sucky teams stay sucky. It’s basically saying that we don’t need quality depth.

It’s also saying that Allen is no more then a depth guy. Most on this board realize he can be a key contributor in a rotation and can be a big help for Vita developing.

I’ll be pissed if Licht trades away Allen.

  24. denjoe Says:

Vinny curry is needed more as DE than a DT. We shouldn’t need to kick him inside on passing downs. I wouldn’t count him as a DT. Allen will help the rotation. Trade them unrein and gholston for descent proven Corner.

  25. DailCoroner Says:

    Joe
    Get a girlfriend.

  26. Buc4life Says:

He’d be more valuable playing for us than the pick he’d probably fetch in a trade. Pass

  27. Tval Says:

philly also added haloti ngata, which is more relevant than michael bennett, when talking jernigan injury concerns. beau was given a contract philly didn’t want to give, and they won’t take said contract on in a trade situation. id see ced thornton being a stop gap target for phillys dline. familiarity

  28. Tval Says:

trade a rotation guy, and a low rounder, for the #1 eagle corner darby?? mmmkay… funny thing is howie might do it lol!! eagle fans dont know how valuable darbys been. hes played great aside from a cpl missed tackles. his speed is enough to destroy timing

  29. Bobby M. Says:

We need vets pushing rookies…..and we need depth. Gifting jobs is what stunts development and makes mediocrity the norm. The dude is getting paid guaranteed money….he’s expected to be professional. I swear the Bucs get the injury bug worse then any team on a year over year basis…..we need depth to survive a season.

  30. Gencoimports Says:

I want Allen to stay, I excpect him to have a huge role this year regardless on how Vita Vea plays, but if the Eagles pay dearly to have him back, why not?

  31. AlteredEgo Says:

    Veletta….has a 1/4 ton of potential….simply does not know the Sunday special…

  32. Joel Says:

Sounds like a good place to ship McCoy and his bloated salary.

  33. Wausa Says:

I don’t want the Bucs to give up good d-linemen unless the Bucs fleeced another team.

  34. R.O. Says:

Beau Allen isn’t going anywhere.. 1 injury away from relying on a 7th round pick for quality snaps.

  35. passthebuc Says:

    Do they need a QB

  36. BucHead5588 Says:

If you trade any d tackle trade Stevie T looks like he might be off man out get a 6th for him make it happen but Big No to allen

  37. m0j0 Says:

For a 3rd rounder, we would have to listen. Otherwise, no thanks. We need the depth/rotation as it’s a long season and we want to keep everyone fresh/healthy and playing at a high level.

  38. aussieBucfan Says:

While this methodology might work in Madden (sign a player with no intent on keeping so you can package in a trade for somebody you want) in real life this type of behavior would damage the ability to sign free agents in the future.

You do this a few times word gets out to agents they are going to advise their clients not to sign in Tampa because your ass could be anywhere before trade deadline.

I assume Joe shares this mindset but has floated this out there for some banter rather than full blown debate..

  39. Seattle Buc Says:

No way, too many injuries on DL every year. Dont mess w our depth

  40. SCBucsFan Says:

If we just traded McCoy we would be much better.

    Sincerely,

A bunch of morons on this blog

  41. BuccaneEric75 Says:

NFLNUT, I’m not sure I want Winston to even have Darby’s cell phone number, let alone be on the same team. I don’t claim to know what happened, but accusations tend to pop up when these two are together. I’d rather take my chances without him.

  42. Condor Says:

If the Eagles were dumb enough to give up a 3rd round pick for him, i’d go for it. But as is, they have Fletcher Cox, Haloti Ngata, Jernigan, and a couple of guys I haven’t heard of. It’s not like they’re in desperate need.

  43. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Joe, what happened to my posts?

  44. BigHogHaynes Says:

    GMC IS A GOD!

  45. Mark Says:

I’m trying to count all the yea’s.

  46. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

No thanks. Allen will play a big role on our D even with us drafting Vita

  47. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

    Joe,
Depth is key. The Bucs have been paper thin for a decade and the playoff drought proves it.

    Deep teams survive into January.

    Keep Allen. Period.

FIX THE TRENCHES, FIX RHE BUCS!!

  48. JAB83 Says:

FUNNIEST SPECULATION I HAVE EVER READ ON THIS SITE….

But I can appreciate the concept.

I would rather give them Vita for they’re 1st and 2nd next year.

They are a team that could easily go from First to Worst. They have all the haul marks of a team that IS NOT A DYNASTY. To understand my point. How would you feel if the Jags had won the SB???

Unload Vita for a 1st and 2nd NEXT YEAR.

  49. Ray Rice Says:

Call and see if you can get a 4th rounder for the Soft One himself. Yea you McFlurry!!!

  50. Greecosuave Says:

How about for Darby? If the Bucs feel they are stacked at DT maybe it’s worth exploring but I don’t see Licht making a trade.

  51. German Buc Says:

No, thank you. Hope we stay with the deep rotation on D-line. Just rewatch last year’s Super Bowl and you know how important it is to be fresh 12:46 mins in the fourth quarter…

  52. THETRUTH Says:

Joe looks like your trying to see what you can throw out there and see what sticks to wall.. C’mon one injury to line and you will be writing about lack of depth . We actually have a rotation of players now who ON PAPER can produce , lets see what happens when they start playing together.

  53. Roy T. Buford Says:

I hope Jason keeps this idea at the back of his mind, not the front! Interesting thought for sure, but Jason needs his team to perform well this year or he will have lots of time to think when it’s all over. Both Jason and Dirk need to build and stack for ONLY THIS year, not trade away for some future pick that may be someone else’s decision anyway. And given the D line is the place of greatest need, I don’t see another player (over a future pick) coming in somewhere else and being more important than many toys and depth on the D line.

  54. Hodad Says:

Joe, a swing, and a miss. Licht has to win NOW! The Eagles will have a winning record, meaning a 2nd round pick, would really a 3rd. Licht would only be helping the next G.M. with draft choices if he doesn’t win this year. Lose Allen we’d be depending on Stevie T who’s never had a regular snap in an NFL game, and a rookie who’s never had one either. Allen is as valuable as a mentor, as he is a player. Make something else up Joe, it ain’t happening.
First, Joe didn’t make anything up. Why type such nonsense? Second, Joe didn’t specify trade compensation whatsoever, so it appears you are making stuff up. Maybe the trade is a player-for-player swap, or it’s after a few games.–Joe

  55. Harold Hobgood Says:

Get real, so tired of all the GMC haters. 6 straight probowls, averaging over 6 sacks/year double teamed more than anyone else on the team, placed in the top 100 players list. I’m not sure why anyone would think they could be better off without him. You might think he is soft, you might think we could use a louder, meaner player, but statistically, it would be difficult to find the same production in any trade or draft. Plus, considering the improved DL it is feasible that GMC could rival his best season in 2018. Either provide a better argument or consider another position on the DL to fix, because replacing GMC with a new DT would be worse than any thing we’ve seen since 1976.

  56. johnnybuc Says:

yeah after what happened last year i don’t think licht is going to get rid of any of the D linemen he has acquired this offseason

  57. Kobe Faker Says:

***Kobe Radar is detecting funny business

Philly player personnel Joe Douglas will be a GM for a new team in 2019…

    Kobe sniffs funny business

“Hey Meathead, I need Beau Allen back and your going to need a new job next year” Howie Roseman

“OK Boss. Philly Philly” Forrest Gump

  58. TOM Says:

Trade sackless Gholston for a 4th

  59. Buccernutter Says:

I can’t believe this article was published.

    Wow.

  60. BucEmUp Says:

Nope, unless they want him bad enough to where they will give up more than He is worth, but a healthy rotation is needed for a dominant line.

Will the line actually have time to do their jobs? That’s a whole different topic!!

  61. BucEmUp Says:

I personally think two more likely traded to.watch for are Humph with a one year contract with Godwin likely eating up a lot of slot, and Brate to a team lime Dallas who really needs a top tight end badly. If they have up a 1st for him or maybe two seconds so think you’d have to entertain that with o.j Howard on the roster.

  62. Bigtruck Says:

I would assume the same Joe who wrote this is the same Joe who was screaming before the draft for the Bucs to trade DJax. Why make things up? There are accessible archives here. The podcasts are all out there. Joe was never screaming to trade D-Jax. Considering options doesn’t mean calling for a trade.–Joe It’s pretty ridiculous that we finally build up some depth and Joe just wants the Bucs to trade away these assets for a pick that we wouldn’t be able to use until next year. I’ll take the nasty DT to help us win this year. Thanks. … Again, nowhere did you read — or hear — to trade Beau Allen for a draft pick. –Joe

  63. Mord Says:

    “developments”?
    “looms”?

I think you misspelled “Joe imagines a scenario in which … “

  64. Bucsforever Says:

No way. Allen will be a key contributer to our success. I promise he nasty in the trenched thats exactly what we have been missing dont see the trade happening joe. Jason has put together a nice rotation that we desperatly needed. I love the moves he has made dont mess it up. Lets see what we can do go bucs. #playoffs
