It was serious coin when quarterback Kirk Cousins locked down $82.5 million guaranteed from the Vikings in March.
Today, the franchise QB bar jumped quite a bit, nearly 25 percent. Word of Matt Ryan’s new deal comes via D. Orlando Ledbetter of the mighty Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The Falcons reached a five-year, $150 million contract extension with their quarterback on Thursday. Overall, Ryan’s contract is now worth $169.25 million, with $100 million guaranteed. After next season, he will average $30 million per season.
Wow. That fifth-year (2019) option on Jameis’ contract for $21 million is starting to feel like peanuts. Heck, brittle Sam Bradford will earn $20 million this year for the Cardinals, while Mike Glennon soaked in $18.5 million with the Bears just last year alone.
So $30 million annually and $100 million guaranteed is the new bar for quarterbacks — while a backup just won the Super Bowl, the same guy who beat Case Keenum in the conference championship. What a country!
The QB money is sure to rise, which will make it even more attractive for teams to chase rookies who can win while they’re still under the inexpensive rookie deals.

I love how people say the Falcon coaches were dumb in the second half of the SB to put the game on the shoulders of Matt Ryan. If you believe that then you also believe the MVP award he won is fake news. Personally I just had a gut feeling that he’d somehow blow the game because that’s what Matt Ryan does. Sure you can quote all his regular season stats when it doesn’t matter, but when the pressure is on he’s just another Alex Smith.

It gets old reading the negative swipes at Jameis. Is he the best in the NFL? No, not yet. Damn, he’s still young with a ton of upside. Does he make boneheaded plays..yes. Then, he will pull off a play that is amazing. Be patient people, it will pay off. I have been a diehard fan since 1978. Jameis is the best starting qb we have ever had. Relax, be willing to grow with him. It will pay off. When he wins his first Super Bowl, I want it to be as a Buc. When it comes time to pay him, I’m sure the owners will do what’s right. $100 mil guaranteed on a 5-year contract? $30 mil a year (plus)? Matty Ice is a very good QB IMO, but over $150 mil for 5-years? Seriously? The ENTIRE Atlanta coaching staff probably makes half (or less) of what Ryan will make each year.
What’s curious to me is that the ones footing the bill … the fans … just go along with it. (Maybe Realist is right; we’re all ‘sheep’). Cost of season tickets (or even individual games) have gotten to be cost-prohibitive for many, maybe for most. And for those who say “Ha, I watch it for free on TV” think again. TV money from advertisers is what’s fueling this runaway train, and companies don’t pay exorbitant $$$ to advertise on TV out of the goodness of their hearts.

If u look on the Buccaneers app it will show pictures from practice, and within the last 3 practices that they’ve posted I have not seen JW3 taking a single snap behind the 1st string O line or throwing to a 1st string wr. It has been all Fitzpatrick. Is this a sign? May be nothing

This is going to alter the NFL. More QB movement in FA, more QBS drafted, more short term QBs 5 year guys who can run RPO, then move on to the next guy when they get drafted. College FB is built around system not QBs. NFL will follow and Lamar Jackson, Tyrod Taylor, Deshaun Watson types will be the new prototype.

By picking up the 5th yr option on QB3…The Bucs ownership have set themselves up to either stay the course or another “start fresh”, after next yr…If the Bucs win 10+ & reach the play-offs…An extension will be forthcoming for QB3-Others..The FO & CoachingStaff will get extensions too.
But if it goes the other way…The FO/Coaching Staff will be gone & QB3/GMC/Kwon become trade chips…While plenty on here will bemoaning that the Bucs could have had Josh Allen, Josh Rosen or Lamar Jackson had this FO not traded away the #7 pick in this draft.

TV revenues are down. Those ‘patriot’ social justice warriors (who BTW are never found in any other forum) cost the NFL big dollars. And now teams need to shell out $100+ million for one rock slinger? I’m not a businessman, but even an idiot realizes that player compensation is ridiculous. No vertebrate, no matter his skill is worth that kinda dough. Throw a fastball into the endzone and suddenly you’re more valuable than the modestly paid guy who actually commands the worlds greatest military? I don’t think so. Keep this nonsense up and the game becomes pay-per-view, (lookin’ at you Jerry Jones) with only super rich fans (count up how many of those folks you personally know. Yeah, when was the last time you quaffed a game time brewski with someone like that?) Here’s an idea:
No more fat contracts. You get paid per point, per block, per stop, etc. I like that. It’s the common man that funds this game, push it out of reach and see what happens.

The Glazers aren’t going to go through yet another rebuild and trying to find yet another franchise QB – Winston is the THE guy and will be the guy for the next 15 years. If you don’t like Winston then I highly suggest you take a trip to the Skyway Bridge, stop at the top, and take the express route down directly into the water (please be kind and take an Uber so you car isn’t blocking traffic, thanks!).

I understand that Matt Ryan is the best QB in Falcons history, a former league MVP, and has led the Falcons to the Super Bowl but to give 150 mill with 100 guaranteed to a guy who has a horrendous playoff record and lost aforementioned SB is a bit much. At least when Jameis re-signs it won’t be for anything near that amount, I think I’d love him forever if he actually asked to take less to give more cap space for the team to sign/extend more players. In Matt Ryan’s 1st game against Tampa they lost 24-9 and Ryan went 13-33 with 158 yards and 2 picks.

LMFAO. It is refreshing to see that bucs fans are as inept and stupid as bucs management. Last year the bucs didn’t have a running back that would start for a good high school team, an o-line that was high school level, a defense that couldn’t stop a jr high school offense and Winston is the problem? You fans are as ignorant as the bucs management, which is the worst run franchise (of any pro sports team in any sport) outside of cleveland. Face it, you guys are bucs fans and nothing is really new. They are year after year the worst run franchise imagionable. If you aren’t used to losing and being a joke of a team by now you haven’t been paying attention to the bucs history of ineptness and losing, which will continue in to the foreseeable future. Water is still wet and the bucs will still suck.
What makes you guys think he even wants to be a buc and won’t run to a real team as soon as he possibly can? Put yourself in his shoes. Year after next he will get paid a massive contract because the football folks see what he can be on a real team with competant coaching. So if you were him who would you sign with, a team that has proven year after year after year that they have no clue how to build or manage a team or an actual pro team that has a plan and knows how to win. Add in the hate he hears from ignorant bucs fans and the choice is clear. Good luck starting over, again, in 2020 while JW goes to a real team and wins a cople of super bowls while the bucs will be lucky to win a couple of games as usual. I for one wish like hell you would have selected MM ovet JW. He probably does too.

I’ve said for years that Jameis should refuse to sign an extension with the Bucs and that he should force the team to franchise him in 2020 so that he can become an unrestricted free agent in 2021 and chose what team he plays for going forward … that may be the Bucs, but he should preserve his right to chose.
Heck, I think Aaron Rodgers wish he would have preserved his right to choose as he probably would have left the Packers if he could have … all QBs should probably go the Kirk Cousins route if they can pull it off.

Winston isn’t worth it. I’d rather dump a pick or two and move up to draft the best QB available next year than to keep Winston at 30 million per.
