Welcome Back, Charles Sims!
April 26th, 2018Hey, Joe told you last week to look for this. And now the Bucs have gone ahead and re-signed their 2014 third-round pick.
Charles Sims is back in a Bucs uniform, per NFL Network, after leading all Bucs running backs in snaps last season by a wide margin.
He was on the free agent market for the past six weeks.
After a pure stud 2015 season, Sims caught the Doug Martin Flu in 2016. Last season he recovered, playing every game, running the ball reasonably well when he got a shot, pass blocking efficiently well and hauling in 35 balls.
Sims, 27, is a solid No. 4 running back in the NFL with enough talent to help you win a game.
Now the Bucs have three running backs on the roster and can feel a tiny bit less pressure entering the draft, but they still are in need of a running back to challenge/complement Peyton Barber.
At a news conference last week, the minute center/guard Ali Marpet was asked about losing Doug Martin and Sims in the backfield, and replied he wasn’t so sure about Sims, Joe knew something was up. Joe’s various sources got tight-lipped quickly about Sims, so it appeared clear that the Bucs and Sims were negotiating.
Man, what if the Bucs sign C.J. Anderson soon and don’t draft a running back? Joe would be ok with that.
April 26th, 2018 at 9:58 am
I would still draft 2 if the situation is right and someone falls to us.
April 26th, 2018 at 9:59 am
Joe still pushing CJ Anderson…the older more expensive Peyton Barber
April 26th, 2018 at 10:04 am
Used properly Sims can be an asset to the team. He should be used for more outlet passes than last couple of years.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:06 am
Watching this guy dance for a bunch of 1 yard losses is always a pleasure. That slip screen play they telegraph to him every game also never works.
At least I can call him twinkle-toes for another 16 games.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:08 am
Uhhh, Joe, are you sure you were watching Charles Sims and not old Billy Sims highlights? Aside from a very nice 2015, this guy has been oft-injured and pedestrian. But he can pass-block and that means Dirk values him more than any rookie RB in the draft.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:09 am
I was thinking they would resign Chuck and/or Robert McClain depending on how the draft goes. I wonder if this means that the Bucs don’t think the RB they want is going to be on the team after the draft.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:11 am
Didn’t McClain sign somewhere else? Or was it Josh Robinson?
April 26th, 2018 at 10:12 am
Instead of stockpiling running backs, what we really need are defensive backs. That’s all we have and they all aren’t gonna produce like they should
April 26th, 2018 at 10:12 am
Now the Bucs have three running backs on the roster and
can feel a tiny bit less pressure entering the draft.
That’s why they waited to draft day! Should
we expect a 4th round running back now?
I expect them to sign a bum Cb now to
justify drafting a safety we don’t need.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:13 am
No! Why? “Twinkle toes you’re breaking my heart!” I guess that means no trade back to acquire more picks, this meaning no 2RBs outta this draft… Maybe for the best…. GO BUCS
April 26th, 2018 at 10:15 am
Bucs were just waiting for Sims to sit on the open market long enough to figure out he’s not worth much more than a vet minimum contract – which is $790k for a 5th year player.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:17 am
This cat will never learn. He’s making the same mistakes he’s made the last 3 years with this buffoon. They had better draft the damn running back, or the fans will f****** revolt!
April 26th, 2018 at 10:17 am
Sims is an ideal 3rd down back in the NFL. When used properly he is a usable asset.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:18 am
I’m fine with Sims coming back. He is a solid back up with good hands plus he already knows this offense very well.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:19 am
What if we get the 15th pick and David Johnson from Arizona for #7 ?
April 26th, 2018 at 10:20 am
WOW! Just what they needed. Now if Licht drafts a kicker in the 1st round we’d be all set.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:22 am
My fear realized. Been worried all along that the Bucs big free agent RB signing would be Sims. He is the best at minimizing potential yardage. Count on 40% less than a true third down back gives you on every touch. Yes, he can get you a 10-15 yard gain now and again, but when you look at the film you realize, it should’ve been 25. At least he is good in pass pro, Koetter’s #1 criteria for a RB.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:23 am
Did we sign him to be a dancer for the team?
April 26th, 2018 at 10:25 am
ok now i can sleep at night….
April 26th, 2018 at 10:25 am
We cannot afford to draft RB in the first two rounds. CJ Anderson could easily be our starter for 2 years if we signed him, spelled by Barber, Quiz, and Sims. That is honestly pretty darn good depth, especially if we add a rookie in the 4th or 5th round. Read fivethirtyeight article published yesterday and see how RB is just not worth it early in the draft!
April 26th, 2018 at 10:25 am
Bucs have a #3 and #4 rb now, so how about # 1 and 2????? Maybe signing a bit of misdirection that they will not have a chubby for a certain RB during day 2????
April 26th, 2018 at 10:27 am
Not good.
Sims is too one dimensional and not flashy enough to be the home fun a lot of players with his type of usage have.
When he’s on the field, every DB knows it’s a pass 90 percent of the time.
This just accentuates the Bucs biggest problem.
Predictability.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:31 am
I hate the signing because regardless of who we draft, Koetter will play this glorified slot receiver on every 3rd down!
April 26th, 2018 at 10:32 am
Dewey, Spotrac says that Robert McClain is still a FA (wish we’d re-sign him for depth). Josh Robinson is on the Bucs roster. Glad Sims is back. He knows the offensive system & he’s better than some give him credit for IMO (2015 – 4.9 YPC average; 2017 – 4.5 YPC average … injured for half of 2016 & 2016).
April 26th, 2018 at 10:32 am
Could this mean that they feel their RB’s are more set now, thus enabling them to go after Hernandez or Wynn at G in late Rd 1/Rd 2? I will say, that having Hernandez/Wynn/Nelson in addition to the rest of our line would make any running back look better. Honestly I really actually would like to see what Barber could do behind this line. I think he could really surprise some people.
If that is their thinking, so be it. Get one of the above mentioned Guards, and go defense with the rest of the picks.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:35 am
Sims definitely dances but when this offense has balance the dude played a like a rotational Matt Forte, I am glad we brought him back
April 26th, 2018 at 10:37 am
Ugh.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:38 am
@Jeebs the Honey Bear … “We cannot afford to draft RB in the first two rounds.” You may well be right Honey Bear, IF we only get 2 picks in the first 3 Rnds (i.e., don’t trade down for more picks). Kinda depends IMO on who’s available when we pick (IF Barkley is there in Rnd 1, my gut tells me we’ll draft him; IF Guice or Michel or Chubb are there in Rnd 2, good chance we’d also draft one of them). IF Bucs sign CJ Anderson, I REALLY hope we add a big back someplace in Rnd 5-7 (my pick there would be Bo Scarborough).
April 26th, 2018 at 10:43 am
There’s a reason that CJ Anderson is still unemployed.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:44 am
Well that pretty much ensures we won’t be seeing any long runs for TDs this season.
There are a lot of good CBs still on the board at #38 in recent Mock Drafts including Mike May Cocks.
Mike Hughes, Isaiah Oliver, Josh Jackson.
Pretty sure this means we ARE going S/CB in the 1st 2 rounds unless a miracle with a trade down happens and New England gives us #31 for free.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:46 am
Man that guy suck !!!!! That’s the problem with this team . They keep players that don’t produce. We need to start holding players acountble for there lack of production. We gave him chance after chance he had 1good year. He don’t break tackles n he don’t out run no body. We can find some better late in the draft like in the 6th round or seven.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:46 am
he’s a ham and egger…
a bad ham-hock, but a good egg…
April 26th, 2018 at 10:46 am
TINY DANCER IS BACK!!! Bahahaha god help us plz and let a competent rb fall to us
April 26th, 2018 at 10:46 am
SHAME ON YOU JASON LICHT! You knew better but you let Koetter get in your head now Sims is going to be handed a slot at 1st or 2nd string.
April 26th, 2018 at 10:48 am
at least chuckie simms will be at “big paw’s” draft party tonight knocking a few back with them wangs!
April 26th, 2018 at 10:49 am
Does anybody know if Jacquizz’s contract is guaranteed ?
April 26th, 2018 at 10:51 am
The signing of Simms doesn’t scare me. It’s koetters stubbornness of using him too much that scares the crap out of me!
April 26th, 2018 at 10:53 am
He runs to high to fake anyone out .
April 26th, 2018 at 10:54 am
My dream draft is now Barkley…but a close second..perhaps even a tie is Nelson then Michel/Guice. Either way we add a running game and in the second scenario we finish a wicked offensive line. Benenoch played well at the end of last year and so he’ll push Dot for starting RT and if Dot gets hurt we have depth.
Smith is solid enough on the left and then the mean three up the gut!!!!
April 26th, 2018 at 10:55 am
i hear that simms has now added the “moon walk” to his repertoire…and thats why they re-signed him…
he has lots of moves…
the stutter step to nowhere…
the electric boogaloo dance move…
he can do the “happy feet” like trent dilfer…
and if your feeling horny, i’m pretty sure he will be your “private dancer”…just ask tina turner
April 26th, 2018 at 10:55 am
Dirk has that loyalty thing going.
Like with muscle hamster. And Smitty.
Normally an admirable trait, but is it for an NFL head coach?
April 26th, 2018 at 10:59 am
now draft BO SCARBROUGH in the 4th or 5th round……
one of the main reasons why I was iffy about sims is because the play calling was predictable when he entered the game…..it was a pass all day long…..
with that being said, that’s not all on him…..dirk has to do a better job of play design…..too many time defenses knew what play was coming depending on who entered the game……
barber, sims and bo scarbrough would be good…….barber, Anderson and scarbrough would be better……imo
sounds like we’re targeting OL early with that move…..
#NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!
April 26th, 2018 at 11:04 am
FTLOG, just draft a RB with one of the first two picks. Help your offense out.
April 26th, 2018 at 11:07 am
Terrible!
April 26th, 2018 at 11:11 am
we need Sony, we cant pass him up in the 2nd. I hate that signing of Sims (bust).
April 26th, 2018 at 11:14 am
Used right, Simms is a weapon. He matches up great in the open field against LB’s.
April 26th, 2018 at 11:15 am
Good guy but not a great football player, hopefully this just until we get some drafted and UDFA’s in to take his place.
April 26th, 2018 at 11:20 am
They probably re-signed him to lead teams to think they won’t draft a RB.
April 26th, 2018 at 11:28 am
No need to improve the worst set of RBS or CBs, not like our coaching staff know how to effectively use them
April 26th, 2018 at 11:29 am
St Pete, how about a Nelson 1st, Wynn 2nd? Wynn has played all positions on O-line except center and I recently heard that he even snapped some balls in practice at GA. McGlitchen (name?) will be gone and Wynn might be there in the 2nd and may replace Dotson. Minimally, he’s versatile depth that will play sooner than later.
However, our defensive needs are ginormous.
I think Licht has telegraphed the reach for DB in the 1st by signing none in FA.
April 26th, 2018 at 11:32 am
🙁
April 26th, 2018 at 11:39 am
Would like to see the Bucs take a chance on Flowers from Oklahoma in the late rounds.
April 26th, 2018 at 11:40 am
Why?
April 26th, 2018 at 11:48 am
bringbucback
wynn is a little too short to play T imo….he’s about 6’2 6’3…..would love either him or nelson at guard…..we should be looking at Orlando brown….was projected to go in the mid or late 2nd but after a poor combine and average pro day he could slip to the 4th……frank ragnow is an option in the 2nd if wynn and hernandez are gone…..he played C and G…..
but i agree with you regarding licht…..he build up the lines in the offseason…..I think he goes DB early…..I hope not tho…..I hope he continues to build both lines thru the draft this year and sign some veteran help at CB & S…..
#NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!!
April 26th, 2018 at 11:51 am
Meh! I fall into the “bad play-calling” crowd. We saw his potential. He was injured and never used the same again.
It give us depth, so, there’s that.
April 26th, 2018 at 11:59 am
Joe,
I have a Beer that the Bucs DONT Draft a RB in the first two days
OLine
DB
April 26th, 2018 at 12:16 pm
I have never in my life read the term “solid No. 4 running back in the NFL” before in my life. That could be the worst vote of confidence I’ve ever seen in print…. ever.
Might as well say, “Charles Sims, a running back who happens to have working legs and feet,…..”
April 26th, 2018 at 12:19 pm
They didn’t call Mini plays for passes to running backs last season not sure why
April 26th, 2018 at 12:20 pm
LOL @ BucTrooper
Well said
April 26th, 2018 at 12:29 pm
Free agent for 6 weeks, no one wants him, BUT WE DO.
I keep waiting for this franchise to WAKE UP and stop signing players no one else wants.
Looks like the waiting will continue.
April 26th, 2018 at 12:29 pm
6 weeks as a free agent and we pick him back up. Terrible! Another loser running back, 4 below average running backs. Good thing doug martin already signed with oakland. I would rather have Chris Simms.
April 26th, 2018 at 12:34 pm
Thank god
April 26th, 2018 at 12:42 pm
Sims is not a solid back up, and Joe how can you say you can win games with him, when in the last four years has that happened? With one of the worst rushing attacks in the NFL how can the pressure be off drafting one when you’re bringing back the same three backs from last year? Koetter does not trust rookie backs, and would rather roll with the likes of Sims. I guess he was busy looking at his play sheet while Kamara was craving up his crappy run defense. Come to think of it how could our defenders know what it’s like to play against real NFL backs when we have NONE on our team to practice against!
April 26th, 2018 at 12:47 pm
Brutal…why we are losers…this guy sucks and fumbles…and they bring him back, ugh
April 26th, 2018 at 1:33 pm
Hearing about this on draft day is like giving your mom a smooch on your way out to the prom. Total buzz kill
April 26th, 2018 at 1:53 pm
GREAT NEWS! He is a wonderful pass-catching 3rd down back … the kind of player that could have blown up on the Patriots … now we need to draft a quality back and we’ll be all set at RB
April 26th, 2018 at 2:05 pm
Yeah man! Welcome back Chuck. Hope we see ya more on early downs.
GOO BUCS!!!
April 26th, 2018 at 2:08 pm

Agree … that’s why he should be a slot receiver instead of a running back.
April 26th, 2018 at 3:31 pm
@BucTrooper….LMFAO!!!!! That’s the funniest comment I’ve heard on JBF!!! Good one man!!!
April 26th, 2018 at 4:27 pm
He stinks!!!!
