Crazy Season In Full Swing

As Joe wrote earlier this week, the lunatic fringe has come out to play. And for Bucs fans, the target is America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.
Joe is now overcome with draft fatigue. It happens every year early in April. Draft, draft, draft, draft, draft… enough already! Pick the friggin’ players!
It gets to the point that Joe is almost looking forward to talking to Bucs players about pumping weights, which will happen next week when the Bucs report for offseason conditioning April 16.
Yeah, Joe gets that bogged down with the draft. And it seems so does just about everyone else. We now have NFL writers arguing about a quarterback prospect flying first class. We now have stat nerds arguing with ex-scouts arguing with ex-NFL front office talking heads.
It is out of hand.
So much so that Bucs fans have — well, some of them have — lost their damned minds specifically the anti-Jameis crowd. As Joe suspected after last season, this subspecies has their knives sharpened and they are ready to pounce after the first incompletion Jameis throws this season.
They are already getting warmed up. As Joe noted, one Bucs fan commenting on this here site wants Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to trade away Jameis for whatever the team can get for him and draft quarterback project Lamar Jackson at No. 7.
No, Joe doesn’t know how many shots this guy downed before typing the above.
But it gets worse. Yesterday, a Bucs fan from Louisiana by the handle of “Moe” called the best football show in the land, “Movin’ the Chains,” co-hosted by Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
Moe is a semi-regular caller and he is an avowed hater of Jameis. He would rather have Josh Johnson as quarterback rather than Jameis. So unnerved is Moe, he wants the Bucs to draft a quarterback at No. 7 as well only to “scare” Jameis into playing better. Moe also added Jameis is “crazy” and Moe is of the mind Jameis shouldn’t be in the NFL.
Kirwan, a former Bucs scout who also once served as the pro player personnel director of the Jets, has grown highly skeptical of Jameis’ future as an NFL quarterback, but even he couldn’t believe his ears.
“It sounds like you want to intimidate but the reality is, you can’t afford to use your first round pick” on such a high school stunt, Kirwan said. “Now if you say you are getting rid of Jameis, we are going to trade him, then OK. But you are not going to do that.
“You can’t use your No. 7 pick in the NFL draft to” scare your quarterback.
Moe would have none of it and argued that Licht needs to draft a quarterback this month in the first round because, he said, the Bucs likely won’t have a top-10 pick next year to draft a top-shelf quarterback. Kirwan cut him off.
“Here is the double-edged sword to that one Moe,” Kirwan explained. “If you are drafting down low [in 2019], that’s probably because Winston played good.”
All of this crazy talk is the result of the NFL dragging out the draft way, way, way too long after the combine. There is no excuse for this.
Yeah, Joe gets the marketing angle of the NFL and it is vitally important for the health of the league. There is still no reason the draft couldn’t be held three weeks earlier, say the first week of April.
This dead time and the fatigue that comes with it fuels mindless, baseless if not idiotic crazy talk that torments Joe and frankly serves no purpose other than to just aggravate folks.
The lone benefit of this unnecessary delay of the draft is it means less non-basketball association talk on national sports networks.

I only put my heart and time on the draft if we are picking anywhere 28-32. Otherwise it’s not fun having a top 10 pick. It’s actually embarrassing to have pick 7. Next year get that late round pick please then I’ll invest more into draft.

Joe, even you have routinely criticized Winston’s play, and the need for improvement. Improvements in areas in which he has DIGRESSED from year one. Quite routinely. And furthermore, you’ve acknowledged many times the possibility (I’d suggest probability), that he will miss six games not due to injury. And I believe he’s in a contract year to boot. And (as I’ve learned from your posts here), it’s hard to find a QB that stays a starter for 5 years with zero playoff appearances, and he’s almost there already. Therefore, to suggest that anyone looking beyond Jameis as QB is dumb is well….dumb.

We really do not need another quarterback people. This one just needs to clean up mistakes. At the end of last year he realized he can’t keep turning the ball over. He will work to clean it up but the question is “can he”.

What do we expect?! We label players as “loving to lose,” “career loser” etc…
Are we to expect fans to be indifferent to Jameis? Why? Isn’t he on the same team of “losers”. What’s so different about Jameis?!
Vinny Testaverde was in the NFL for 21 years, TWENTY-ONE and drafted number 1 overall by the Bucs! He is in the top 10 all-time in 3 categories: 6th in career passing yardage, 7th in career touchdown passes, 6th in career completions.
Why do I mention him you ask. Because NOBODY talks about him despite all those statistics because he didn’t win games. In other words, as of right now, Jameis is not so “rare”. Until he proves it, he’s fair game. That’s the truth whether you like it or not.
I don’t agree with Moe but we can’t act like Jameis is Tom Brady or something. You are what your record says you are.

Winston will have decent future in the NFL, the only question is whether the Bucs will be part of his success or another franchise. The guy has the work ethic and will to win but just need to settle down a bit and don’t try to overdue it. From a progress standpoint he’s not quite where I’d hoped he’d be at this point in his career but at the very least he’s an average QB. You can win with an average QB but just have to have strength in other areas on the team.

According to the Fox News sports host, Maka Thingsup, if Brady played for the Bucs last year the team record would have been 7-9. And vice-versa, if Jameis would have played in New England the record would have been 10-6.
All kidding aside, it’s always more about the team than one guy, whether he is the QB or not.

Joe… trade scenario for you to opine on:
Jameis to the Browns for the 1st and 4th overall and a 2nd round this year. We draft a QB with #1, Chubb or Barkely with #4 and still get Nelson, Ward, or whomever else with #7.
I think Jameis is good, maybe great, but hasn’t shown that consistently yet. I do know he has 2 strikes (actually more) in the court of public opinion and is one more baseless accusation away from becoming a pariah in the league. The Uber situation is going to cost him games… proof or no proof. My over/under is 4. He’s not going to be able to stay clean, we should consider shipping him while he still has a lot of value. Think Pats… better to ship them a year too early than a year too late.

I have been a “Buc” since day one seen a lot of QB’s come and go. Jameis is clearly the best we’ve ever had. In just 4 years he will break most of our team records and when he does, the haters will be eating a giant slice of humble pie. And no I haven’t forgotten that Steve Young wore Bucco Bruce on his helmet for 2 years.

No excuse for the crazy talk or no excuse for the NFL dragging out the time of the draft? Actually both eh since you suggest one leads to the other.
I don’t really disagree but after all the crazy talk I’ve seen from some posters here I’m not sure they need a down or “Crazy” time to be crazy.
Some here have definitely been hyperbolic about GMC to the point they’d embarrass themselves if they weren’t victims of Dunning-Kruger…a psychological study that shows many people have a higher opinion of their smarts and abilities because they are literally too dumb to know better.
I don’t know where the irrational hate comes from…but I could expand that to other things that are going on right now in our nation.
Why do we need to call Bucs players or Coaches absurdly negative names and ignore their achievements. Their flaws have been documented here so meticulously that I won’t bother to restate obvious areas for improvement.
5-11 Sucks. We all get that!!! But why so many here want to throw the baby out with the bathwater just amazes me. Jameis had an injury filled disappointing season…we get that…but throw out baby Jameis now? Don’t think so.

Yes, lets not waste a pick in the first 3 rounds on a cb. Every qb in this league will light up a team with no pressure who plays 15 yards off. Keep drafting Dline until it’s good enough. I hope theyre not putting all their eggs in JPP and Currys basket.

I could see drafting a developmental QB somewhere after round 2… if we could spare the pick (which we can’t). Would be nice to have a backup plan in case Jameis melts down or regresses or has long term issues with that shoulder… It would not surprise me at all if they picked a QB in round 5 or later if they felt it was a value pick.

This is to the people who think we need to mov on from Jameis…HE IS 25 YEARS OKD. Think about when he turns 29…you really wanna see him playing for the Jets? Or the Saints? When he finally puts it together. Haven’t we done that enough? (Testaverde, Young, Williams..)

I just watched the replay of the Bucs and Panthers last years game on the NFL Network. If I was doubting Jameis, I wasn’t after that game. He was the best player for both teams. If not for bad play calling in the red zone, an easy 41 yard FG missed, a boneheaded play from fat arse Baker, multiple stupid penalties, the Bucs win this game easy. No where or no how was this game in anyway Winston’s fault. In fact he outplayed everyone and had an outstanding game . And if everyone on the team cared about winning and hated losing like Jameis as illustrated at the end of the game , this team would win more games.

Totally reasonable-Just Like: If the coaches were good they would have turned Vernon Hargreaves into an all pro CB in a year that he was injured. Things like pass rush, size, and speed (don’t matter)…it is just coaching. Forget drafting a CB it won’t help the Bucs because they having no body to coach them. Totally Reasonable! Why would we want to go anywhere near a QB in the draft to scare him?

Jameis was just as accurate as Peyton over the same time frame. Myth busted. 61 Total Turnovers for Jameis and 69 Total Turnovers for Peyton over the same time. Myth busted. Jameis was equally rated to Peyton over the same time period. Myth busted. Peyton had more TD but a worse ratio of TD:IMT than Jameis over the same time period. Myth busted. Peyton’s record was much better, but he had 2 HOF RB’s, 1 stud LT, and 1 HOF WR. Jameis has had an atrocious defense, Druggie Dougie at RB, Bust/Swinging Gate Donovan Smith at LT, and possible future HOFmer in Mike Evans and Desean Jackson for 1 year.
Two QB’s. Both #1’s. Very similar stats over the same time frame. One is white. One is African American. The African American gets criticized much harsher than the white quarterback ever did despite producing similar numbers. Makes you think.

Browns 1st 4th and 2nd round pick for Winston = Chubb, Barkley, and Jaire Alexander . And with out 7th pick one of the 5 quarterbacks (my preference Lamar Jackson). Plus all of the rest of our picks would fix every single hole and with studs at the most important position. I’ll take that trade all day. Yeah Winston has upside but he definitely has more downsides to me.
#1 he cant throw a deep ball to anyone except one time to Godwin.
#2 too many interceptions (2nd behind Desone Kiser) *he’s a rookie
#3 way too many fumbles ( lead the league )
#4 slow to start games very lopsided
#5 too many off the field incidents guilty or not, its happened twice with two women in under 5 years and likely getting suspended
#6 sucks in the redzone
#7 he screwed us for our draft position due to not following the coach
#8 he acts like a fool to the point where other players make fun of him publicly. (Never seen that in 41 years)
I think thats enough to be cut much less traded for such a haul.
Make the trade and cut this overhyped underwhelming problem child!!

Pat Kirwan was the director of player personnel for the New York Jets. The Director of Player Personal is #2, the GM is #1. The New York Jets record under Pat Kirwan’s talent evaluation expertise was atrocious. He was a failure at talent evaluation. 49 Wins – 95 Losses with only one winning season in Kirwan’s 9 seasons with the Jets atrocious. I don’t put a lot of merit into Kirwan’s talent evaluations as Kirwan’s with Jameis because Kirwan has proven that he can’t evaluate talent, as the losing New York Jets demonstrated under his talent evaluation. Silly is listening to a proven failure when it comes to evaluating talent. Hey Kirwan and everyone else, ever heard of the franchise tag? It’s an option that the Bucs have with any player, including Jameis. Are the Steelers tied down to Bell for a massive contract over numerous years? No, they aren’t, you don’t say. Shocking.

Hey Eric, you might want to check your stats. Jameis had 11 INT last year. Nowhere close to leading the league as you incorrectly stated that Jameis was 2nd behind Kizer’s 22 INT. #2 was Cam Newton with 16. #3 was Mariota with 15. #4 was Big Ben with 14. Prescott, Carr, Matt Ryan, Russell Wilson all threw more INT’s than Jameis last year. Jameis was #17 with 11 INT last year. Can’t take anything you say seriously when you use fabricated, factually incorrect and thus invalid statistics to support your claims against Jameis.
Jameis has thrown more TD’s than any other QB in the history of the NFL before the age of 24, breaking Dan Marino’s record set over 30 us years ago.
Dan Marino played for a Super Bowl Caliber team from the time he was a rookie. Those Dolphins had an amazing defense and offense for Marino when he set that record. The Bucs have been nowhere near a Super Bowl contending team in any of Jameis seasons.

BelleGlade…….That’s kind of a reach to blame Kirwan for W-L record or evaluating. That just seems like your doing a lot of guesswork for what his job truly entailed.
Can you honestly look at even just one player that flopped for the Jets and say that it was Kirwans fault? For all we know the guy negotiated contracts for most of his job.

Kirwan was Director of Player Personel for the New York Jets. GM is the only position higher than that in the NFL team’s front office. No guess work involved. Those are the facts. The New York Jets were awful under Kirwan’s tenure as director of player personnel.

Marino also would have made this league look ridiculous if he played today with there no defense rules. 60 TD seasons would have been easy for Marino with today’s NFL rules.

BelleGlade sorry but that is not a fact. The GM is not the highest position on every team. The Bucs are a good example when they had two coach’s Lovie and Gruden that were given more power then their respective GMs.
The point is that every NFL office has its own way of doing business. It’s too much guesswork to hold Kirwan responsible for that W-L record. But since you disagree please let me know which poor decisions Kirwan directly made?

For the people who keep mentioning his 4000 yards passing seasons compared to the all time greats. . Do yourself a favor and research how many Qb’s threw for 4000 since the early 2000’s. You will notice in 2002 there were 2 Qbs to pass for 4000. Keep looking at the following years and you will notice a trend where almost every year the amount who throw 4k increase every year where 1 or 2 would be the norm back in 02 but now its 5 times as many. The years Wi ston did it there where 11 and 12 more QBs who also threw 4k and btw he had the least amount above 4k and 2nd lest the other. My point is you cant compare the different eras because defense has been watered down to bring more points more offense and to a lesser degree player safety. So yeah he threw for 4k but so did 11 and 12 other guys who also surpassed Winston’s best statistical years.

Peyton was throwing to HOF Marvin Harrison, had a stud LT in Tarik blocking for him, and not one, but 2 HOF Running Backs in his backfield to hand the ball too.
Please tell me that you aren’t using a phrase that as a Special Olympic volunteer I and numerous others find as offensive as the N word to describe me, when you are seeming to suggest that Winston handing the ball off to Martin is the same as Peyton handing the ball off to Marshall Faulk/Edge James?
Also, you conveniently left out the fact that Jameis did not play in three games last season, and played with a hurt throwing shoulder in 3 games last year. Despite all of that he matched Bortles last year.
Also, Bortles offensive line are monsters, he gets to hand the ball off to Fournette, and he has John Wick as his defense.
Please tell me you’re not comparing Fournette to Martin?

Kirwan thought Thomas was a better RB than Rodney Hampton or Emmit Smith.

Bellglade just stop making excuses already. Stud left tackle…really. Mike Evans is top 3 in the league, Djax is or was for the last 10 years the best deep threat in the league(until Janeis started throwing to him) and while Martin is no HOF he did have two Hof type seasons that rank up there and dude almost won the rushing title while having a rookie Qb under center. Brate led the league in Td’s last year while splitting time with Howard who is a freak of nature. Lets not forget the rookie sensation Godwin and good ol Rudy. More important than being aware of how close the talent level at the skill positions was is the fact that Peyton made everyone better because of the timing and ACCURACY! The most important thing is he won games. For over a decade they usually made the playoffs and were a top 3 or better scoring offense. To hell with passing yards in garbage time, Ill take the points all day everyday. Brace yourself powder puff but if you think Winston could hold Manning’s jock you my friend are a moron. Btw if two people have a tie for the most or least at anything you both own the title. Look at it this way if thats tok hard to comprehend, did anyone thow more? Smh smh

@joe The world is full of people who make mistakes and maybe they think our coaches are to blame. ie. Gaines Adams to the Bears for a 2nd round pick. Just look at Bradford and the teams that payed so much to get an often injured never done much but has potential.
I never said he’s the worst just saying he aint worth passing up that amount of draft picks. Maybe if he has at least made it to the playoffs I would understand but I truly believe there are more talented quartebacks including Lamar Jackson, Rosen, Darnold and maybe Mayfield. Again his big claim to fame is 2 seasons of 4k passing yards which got me curious so I checked and found out he wasnt even in the top ten in either of those years. During those two seasons his yardage totals equaled less than the guy everone says Jacksonville should toss in the trash Blake Bortles, if I was Bortles Id would be losing my mind how Winston is “hall of famer in waiting” to some in Tampa and he is hated by the whole city, even though he won a playoff game. To suggest its not possible is crazy. I respect your opinion but I think that option has crossed the mind of more people than you think

Preach Eric. Peyton won 28 games in his first 3 seasons and made the playoffs twice. There is no comparison between Winston and Manning. Can’t wait for the NFL to suspend him and finally hold him accountable for Predatory behavior. While he is a talented QB, he’s just not a winning QB.

It would be foolish to think Jameis won’t set all kinds of passing records IF he can stay healthy and walk out on the field for the next 10 years. Surely he is the best QB the Bucs have ever had.
But why can’t you all recognize a clear pattern of (alleged) behavior and not draw the conclusion it will continue? His career with Tampa will end in a dishonorable discharge by Team Glazer. No one will be surprised when it happens, you just don’t want to believe it.
Still, it seems many people are willing to take such risks with their franchise given the reduced odds he will be able to stay on the field long term. That means you could still get a huge haul for him before it is too late.
Be bold Licht, float the trade. Get off the tracks before the train comes.

Rookie year is a rookie year for a QB in the NFL. Jameis did win 6 games. Tripling the previous year’s record.
Jameis second year (2016) they were 9-7, and in every game up until the end as they fought for a playoff spot as they lost 4 games by 7 points or less. They were blown out by the at the Cardinals, Broncos and the Falcons at home. Not much garbage time that season.
Jameis 3rd year, he was 3-10. The Patriots loss went down to the wire. The Buffalo loss where he played with a hurt throwing shoulder went down to the wire. The Green Bay loss went to overtime. The Detroit loss was by a field goal in the last 30 seconds of the game. The Atlanta loss Jameis drove them to put them in field goal position to win the game and Murray missed the tying field goal with 5 seconds left in the game. The Carolina loss was by 3 points and went down to the end as Baker jumped offsides to give Carolina a 4th and 1 that Cam converted and scored on.
Jameis was not covering Dalvin, Diggs or Thielen as they shredded the secondary for a combined 343 yards and two TD’s in that loss. He also was not on the field to stop Dalvin from rushing 27 times for 97 yards and 1 score.
Arizona loss he was hurt early as AP went Hulk Hogan on our run defense.
Panthers game he played hurt, but he hurt his team and they lost.
New Orleans game he played hurt again and got knocked out by halftime. They were losing 16-3 at the half thanks to our special teams giving up a blocked punt for a TD.
Not much garbage time that season. Also our defense was the worst defense in the NFL last year bHis line is horrible and Martin, Rodgers, Barber and Simms were his RB’s.
Are you sure that you are a fan of the Bucs. Did you watch any of the games last year?

107 of the people drafted with Jameis were underclassmemen. That’s almost half of the draft class. 21 year old juniors are normal in the NFL draft. Have been the norm from the time of Maurice Clarett Rule back in 2003.
Marino set that record in 27 games. That’s a tribute to how great Marino was as well as the fact that he was drafted on a Super Bowl team.
You sound like an individual arguing Marris’ single season homerun record vs Ruth’s.
The fact is numerous QB’s have been drafted at the age of 21 like Jameis was in the NFL since Marino set the record 34 years ago and Jameis has been the only QB to break that record.

In Jameis second season he was 9-7.
The loss to the Rams was by 5 points and ended with Jameis trying to score a rushing TD to win the game at the 5 yard line as time expired. No garbage time.
The Oakland loss went to OT. No garbage time there.
The Cowboys loss was by 6 and we were winning in the 4th quarter 20-17. No garbage time there.
The Saints loss was by 7 and the score in the fourth quarter was 28-21. No garbage time there.
I noted that they did have 3 losses where they were blown out that year. Maybe that’s the HUGE amount of games his second year you were talking about.

You don’t know very much about Football. Norwell is who Joe wanted because he would have helped us and hurt a division rival. Also, Nelson wouldn’t be on our draft board if we got a proven veteran stud like Norwell. He will be blocking for Bortles and Fournette. A Super Bowl contending team with a 2,000 yard rushing attack just got stronger.
So a QB who has one the leagues most dominating defenses makes no sense to you?
Did you see what they did to New England’s offense led by the GOAT in Brady?
Have you forgotten our Super Bowl caliber defense with Sapp, Lynch, Barber, Rice, or have you never been a fan?
Jacksonville’s defense makes it easier for a competent QB to win. A great QB with that defense wins multiple championships.
Brady’s first Championships were because the Patriots with Law, Rodney, McGinnest, Teddy, Vrabel, Seymour, Lawyer, Wildork defenses shut down the greatest show on turf.
The Pats Carolina Championship win the Pats defense destroyed the Panthers up until the fourth quarter when both teams offenses exploded. That game was a defensive slug fest until the fourth quarter.
The Pats 3rd Championship they destroyed the high power offense of McNair, Westbrook and Owens. That defense had to overcome Tom Brady’s multiple turnovers giving the Eagles great field position and holding them to punts. That Pats defense also created 4 turnovers.
Seems like you don’t know much about football. Or did you think the Patriots #6 ranked defense in their first Super Bowl, #1 ranked defense in their second championship or their #2 ranked defense in their third championship were not as big of a factor as Brady? You think the Brady of today was the Brady during those years, don’t you? You forgot that they had power running backs in Smith and Dillion. It was the Parcells/Bellicheck Super Bowl Formula. Dominating defenses with a power running game. Brady wasn’t the NFL MVP for any of those teams.

Joe, you and I know that Jameis is not the problem. The only worry I have with Jameis is someone targeting him with an allegation of sexual assault. I really believe that the man has learned his lesson. Bill Cosby he isn’t.
Last year, I was worried about his health when his play suffered along with his injury. He did show usa ll what he is truly capable of with his 44-32-384-1-3 passing day at Buffaro. If I am right he averaged more passing yards per game last year.
Linebackers, WR, TE and P don’t worry me. All else fails. Let’s not waiste Jameis. Oh, the guy holding the chains on the sideline was pretty solid, too.
