Pat Kirwan On Jameis: “Do You Really Want To Drop A Ton Of Coin On That Guy?”

April 10th, 2018

Fresh football and investigation talk about Jameis Winston.

The former Jets coach, Bucs scout and Jets front office executive turned CBS Sports analyst and top host on Sirius XM NFL Radio, Pat Kirwan, is a true power player when it comes to NFL Media.

After 35 years around the league, Kirwan interacts regularly with officials from all aspects of the game and travels to loads of training camps and attends all major NFL events.

So Joe pays attention when Kirwan shares wisdom.

And that’s what he did recently on WWCN-FM Fort Myers.

The subject was the official NFL Jameis Winston investigation into his alleged unauthorized crotch-grab of an Uber driver in 2016. The issue became public five months ago.

Kirwan was asked why the NFL is screwing the Bucs by letting the investigation drag on.

Jameis fans won’t like his verbatim response seen below:

“I have not heard the logic behind why they’re waiting [on the Jameis Winston investigation],” Kirwan said of the NFL. “My experience when I had players that had issues, the waiting was really because they hadn’t gathered enough of their own information to make a conclusion.

“And I promise you I used to call [the NFL] and say, ‘C’mon, we gotta know. We gotta know what we’re going to do in the draft.’ “My [Jets] situation involved a cornerback and we weren’t sure we were going to have him. We weren’t sure if he was going to get suspended. All the things. And we could not get an answer and the league didn’t really care how many times I called and how many times I complained. And even when I had our [team] president, who was the league office all the time, I said, ‘You might want to get involved in this.’ And it didn’t do any good. They’re going to wait until their security people, usually, say ‘We’ve got everything we need here.’

“And they’ve made enough mistakes along the way that they’re even more cautious today than back when I was in it. So when in doubt, draft a guy at the position.

“You know, someone told me, ‘Would you be surprised if Jameis Winston is traded next year?” Your out on a limb on that one. But when you think about [Jameis] do you really want to drop a ton of coin on that guy? Do you want to put him into the $20 million-a-year range? Maybe not ever. It’s coming down to it for him and the kid up in Tennessee. They gotta start playing better. They were brought in as the top picks in the draft to get to a championship game [in 2018] and a Super Bowl next year. Well, they’re pretty far behind on the schedule. That’s not my schedule. That ultimately is the fans/media schedule for expectations for these guys. And so far, it really hasn’t been that good.”

So there you go. The NFL plays very, very stubborn, per Kirwan, when it comes to these kinds of investigations.

But Joe’s attention today is on Kirwan wondering whether Jameis stays a Buccaneer if he can’t succeed this season. Kirwan is spot on. As Joe has written, good luck finding a rookie quarterback in the modern NFL who started his first four seasons (the vast majority of games) without making the playoffs — and then started a fifth season with that team. Joe would love help finding a guy with that resume.

Joe’s wildly rooting for Jameis on all fronts, but with 45 games under his belt, it’s absolutely time for Jameis to emerge from the pack and become more than an average QB in his conference.

  1. P’cola Buc Says:

We might regret letting Jameis go. He’s the best we have had in many years. Who would we replace him with? Will we find him one day in New England winning Super Bowls for Kraft?

  2. AKick'nTheBucNuts Says:

This whole organization needs to show us something this year or my guess is…a LOT of changes.

  3. Syl Says:

That was the most nonsensical statement I ever read. It sounds like someone who has no clue just rambling on to fill time.

  4. John meeks Says:

Agree, the time is now for jameis and the entire team to step up!

  5. JA Says:

Another comment from a guy that probably watched five minutes of Bucs game film last year. This guy is so plugged in that he can’t even remember Marcus Mariota’s name. Everybody has an opinions these days but INFORMED opinions are rare. Count Kirwin as another member of the uninformed club.
You obviously, don’t pay attention to Kirwan if you’re making that comment. –Joe

  6. Marlow Says:

Jamis may wanna leave. Folks win Super Bowls after leaving Tampa.

  7. Broy34 Says:

God is it draft day yet. Least favorite time of the football year. Ridiculous smoke screens and unecessary bashing

  8. Pickgrin Says:

    “Wisdom” – Eh?

Sounds like Kirwin is spouting some serious BS if he’s questioning whether the Bucs should hang onto Winston or not….

  9. lambchop Says:

Jameis needs to get better with his decision making. I think most fans can agree on that. But this team is in no shape 1 QB away from the post season the years Jameis has been our QB. I dont think he’s the type that can shoulder the load even if we were 1 QB away, but he doesn’t need to be that guy if we have a team around him that can help. Depending on what happens in the draft and post draft, this may well be the best team on paper we’ve fielded in the last decade. This season will hopefully bring out his best. But, I think poor play calling, poor coaching, poor evaluating, injuries, etc have stunted the growth of this team during the Jameis years.

The less Jameis has to carry this team the better.

  10. feelthepewterpower Says:

Winston is well ahead schedule. Does Pat Kirwin not realize that Jameis came into the league at 20?? Jameis will get paid and continue his ascension as our franchise QB.

  11. donuts Says:

Wow! Probably the best article on JBF in a month. I love the honest look at #3. Its easy to defend him but harder to look critically at him as a player when we are all fans of the team and ultimately want the same thing…a team in the playoff hunt come December that is playing well. I hope for the Bucs sake (we dont want to be QB hunting again) that Winston starts showing why he was the first pick. We have only seen glimpses and its time to see it on a consistent basis. If he gets suspended and plays average again, I think he is gone.

I do think Winston has the talent to go to the next level. Does he have the mental makeup to lead this team over the playoff drought hump is the bigger question that is unanswered. When I listened to JBF Monday podcast, I agree that Winston responding to the DJAX inconsistency stuff on social media was a mistake and a small glimpse of maybe he is still not mature enough, which really concerns me after year 3. I thought the Brees comparison was dead on when noting his personality would not respond to favoritism with his WR group especially on social media. #3 put that phone down until you lift the Lombardi trophy! then you can talk all you want..

  12. ndog Says:

I would much rather trust the words of the owner of this team than this has been who wasn’t very good in the first place. This statement is complete and utter nonsense and we wanted to trade Jameis about 15 teams would line up trying to see what we would take in a trade. Again people don’t have to like it but facts are facts from a stats perspective he is on a HOF pace period end of story.

  13. Vic Says:

Jameis has this year to shut everyone up. He’s got all kinds of weapons and better RBs already. He’s already proven he can play will in this system. So it’s on Jameis.
If he fails this year, then Koetter and Licht are gone and a new coach will want his own QB, one that isn’t a magnet for trouble, losing and weight on the salary camp.
    It’s not that complicated.
Joe is right. What QB gets a fifth year to figure it out?
I’d say I’m 60% confident he figures it out.

  14. Radman Says:

Draft a good OL position player and see what JW can do. If he fails, time to consider his future.

  15. Issic Haggins Says:

Winston is pretty dam good with the coaching and holes that have been around him!!!

Do the turnovers decrease with a running game , top 15 defense and less drops , I believe they will .

  16. I Bleed Pewter and Red Says:

I can’t help wondering where we might be today had we taken the other guy. He would’ve had more talent to work with in Tampa Bay than Tennessee but somehow managed to get Titans in playoffs. …and we’re still waiting. So it was unfair for Kirwan to compare Mariota to Winston as an underachiever. JMO

  17. rrsrq Says:

    Joe,

I listen to “Moving the Chains” pretty frequently – they can tell everything about the Pats, Steelers, Raiders, Packers an da few other high profile teams, Bucs are bottom of the rung to these guys and I get it, very few Buc calls to the show, but sometimes they are not as adept on the Bucs as they could be, I constantly hear the mis-takes and the mistakes about our players and team, I listen because I like football, but sometimes it is irritating, I do not expect much to change until the Bucs are winning, which I hope is their attitude as well “change the culture”

  18. Lord Cornelius Says:

It’s an organization failure if that happens. A sad as f*ck failure.

This team averaged under 5 wins per season the 6 years after we fired Gruden before we signed Jameis.

Since drafting Jameis we’ve averaged closer to 7 wins.

So even on a sh1t roster with barely anything left from the Dominic days; he still has been part of a W:L improvement.

He’s also set a bunch of Bucs passing records; and despite being injured his 3rd year; still continued to improve in every passing category; and finished as a top 12 type QB the last 5 games of the sason.

And you seriously want to dig into Wins and Losses Kirwan? Go look up all the freaking game logs – as I have – and see who the f*ck is losing us games in the 4th quarter. LIke 1/2 our wins since Winston has been here have been on him doing something in the 4th quarter.

So go ahead and entertain these thoughts…but sh1t could be MUCH worse. And watch the F*ck out if Winston was actually on a good team.

  19. GhostofSchiano Says:

As Joe has written, good luck finding a rookie quarterback in the modern NFL who started his first four seasons (the vast majority of games) without making the playoffs —

We have the Dan Pastoreni of the 70’s Oilers. We need our Earl Campbell to get to the next level.

  20. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    @Joe….

My man, you gotta slow the hell down on Pat Kirwan. YES, this Bucs fan DOES know who Pat Kirwan is, was, and frankly is not. For God’s sake man, you talk about him like he’s Bill Parcells, Ron Wolf, or Bill Walsh or something. It’s ….JUST Pat Kirwan! He’s had a mediocre at best, NFL front office personnel background, and many current of that ilk have favorable opinions on Jameis.

And in his “comments”, he didn’t specifically reveal anything we already didn’t know (about the investigation), and his opinions are just that, his opinions on Jameis, and/or Mariota. Let’s see Pat Kirwan play QB, huh.

First, Jameis and Mariota have each endured injuries in their brief 4 year careers, have performed in the top half of the respective QB offensive, have also endured multiple coaching and position coach changes in 4 years, and THEY DON’T PLAY DEFENSE last time I check, which also account for the lackluster TEAM performance, determining a playoff birth or not.

    Joe…it’s just Pat effing Kirwan.

    Go Bucs!

  21. JJBucFan Says:

Does anybody that comments on the Bucs actually watch the games? Pure silliness. We have had a terrible defense, special teams, average o-line and no running game except for 1 year with Doug. Jameis has set all kind of records into his fourth year. His OC (Koetter) has completely handicapped him with his sh*tty play calling and he had to defy him just to get a couple of wins. Haters talk about his turnovers-okay I’ll give you that but that comes with maturity. Favre was a turnover machine, would you same people be calling for us to replace him? Oh, I know-don’t compare Jameis to Favre- Jameis has done more in his first 4 years than Favre ever dreamt of doing. Jameis will be here long after Koetter, Smith and Licht.

  22. miken Says:

Pretty good and fair take. Put up or shut up time.

  23. Gambelero Says:

If Winston goes to a better run organization, it’ll be like Doug Williams cubed. Given how many times we’ve regretted the loss of Bennett and Penn on this board, I can just imagine the lamentations as we chase another franchise QB while Jameis is regularly chasing championships somewhere else.

I’m convinced our 89%er owners went ahead and spent some money this year because they don’t want to lose him.

  24. Kobe Faker Says:

“The NFL isnt worried about Jameis/exact details but what they are scared of is attention whore Attorney John Clune and what he is going to do with NFLs decision . John Clune wants the NFL(big fish)more than JW…..

There absolutely is a reason why its taking so long. NFL is scared Clune has something in his sleave that will make the NFL look very bad if they let this slide

Kobe believes NFL will suspend JW for 2 games just so Clune wont go after the NFL.”

*JW and uber girl will settle out of court

    Kobe & Kobe

    *JBF 10% discount

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I don’t know how you investigate something without apparently interviewing any of the subjects…..they aren’t looking at video tape and I presume there is no audio…..have they gotten hold of the phones…..come on!!! Investigation my a$$..

Now the problem here is that Winston supposedly didn’t inform coaches or management about the incident……even though he was notified of the complaint from Uber…..it would be difficult for me to have trust going forward……so, do you want to keep him….yes…..but do you want to drop a ton of cash on him……maybe, maybe not.

  26. pick6 Says:

it would take a special kind of stupid for a franchise to walk away from its most talented QB possibly ever because fans are freaking out about his performance playing through injury while supported by the league’s worst defense and running game. If the team stumbles next year, the bucs will still at least pick up his 5th year option and lure in an offensive coach with the dual lure of seeing what he can get from Jameis in his first season followed by total freedom to pick his QB in his second season

  27. Wausa Says:

    Pat Kirwan is an idiot.

  28. EnoughSaid Says:

Why do Pat’s opinions matter? Clearly the NFL executives don’t value his opinions. If they did, he would have a front office job and not be on the radio. During his time in the NFL as scout, coach, and executive, his teams only finished with one winning record(9-7) and they were immediately bounced from the playoffs. If we were to trade Jameis or let him walk via free agency, it would set this franchise back another 10 to 15 years! Do we not learn from previous mistakes(i.e. Doug Williams and Steve Young)?? Do we really want to see Jameis win Super Bowls for another franchise?? NFL quarterbacks take 5 to 6 years before they are ready to win championships. The few that have accomplished this prior to this timeframe, were on teams that were ready to win a championship regardless of who was playing QB. Jameis is the best QB this franchise has ever seen. Be patient and the championships will come! In Jameis I Trust! Go Bucs!!

  29. Lord Cornelius Says:

If we dumped Winston only to see him have a HOF like career I’m probably f*cking done with this franchise. You can only take so much lol.

Even if you don’t give him ANY excuses; he’s objectively and statistically been the best QB we’ve EVER had.

    Seriously.

How the F*ck can you reconcile the above with wanting to move the guy? How can you even freaking consider it at this point?

The only reason is at this point. It sure as f*ck can’t be based on what he’s done on the football field; unless you’re a delusional nut with insane expectations.

  30. zzbucs Says:

He is a good player, I have no doubt…But a 20mm year kind of player????, hell no…..This is the year to show us more……He is young, he is inmature, he has a lot of potencial, but he is far away form the top qb´s, The Rodgers, The Bradys, etc. I wouldnt pay that money if he does not get a step futher.

  31. pick6 Says:

as others have said, this didn’t happen in a casino or a bar or a storfront. there are 3 sources of evidence, the accuser, the accused, and the other parties that may or may not have been present. it has been confirmed that the NFL has yet to talk to at least 2 of those 3 sources. so are they building an investigation based on the accuser’s statements to Uber? the timing would make sense if one iota of what i would consider to be FUNDAMENTAL fact gathering had been done

  32. Lord Cornelius Says:

I meant the only reason at this point is -insert whatever “problems” you think he has off the field-

  33. pick6 Says:

and btw, the throwaway one-year starters (osweiler, glennon) have a 15mm floor. if you have a guy who you know is keeping a QB out of your draft plans and your backup on the bench, that basically qualifies your QB to earn $20 mil a year. this isn’t 2010, with the way the cap has moved $20m is just table stakes to keep a starting QB in town

  34. Eric Says:

Trade this organization destroying overrated inaccurate loser. Raheem said it best, stats are for losers and thats all you have to defend this punk. Stats are good if you are winning games otherwise I consider it garbage time stats…you know the kind where we are diwn 21 and the defense plays prevent defense. (Which allows for easy yards and completions)

  35. 813bucboi Says:

Winston is safe…..dirk is the only who has to worry…..if Winston cant fix his T.O’s or connect with the deep ball, then folks need to start looking at who’s coaching him and what are they coaching……

are these coaches focusing on technique and fundamentals or only execution?….if you perfect your technique and fundamentals execution will be near perfect…..but if you only focus on successful execution, even when the fundamentals and technique are wrong or incorrect the player will continue to have rollercoaster performances on Sundays….

as many have posted before, his stats went up so its not the talent or ability…..there’s a misconnect between Winston and the scheme/playcalling…..that was highlighted when Winston ignored dirk, called godwins number and won the game in spite of dirk…..

the time is now for Winston to mature as a man, leader and role model…..that’s the only thing its time for…..

no more rah rah speeches…..it hasn’t worked…..just focus on QBing…..don’t focus on setting the tone, getting guys ready, getting hyped, none of that…..Winston just needs to focus on executing play after play to perfection….that’s the only way he’ll get better and those around him get better…..

now if the coaches cant see that or have told him that, then they need to hit the door!!!!!!!

with that sadi, MR. WINSTON, NO EXCUSES from you either(even tho he’s never made excuses for his performance or the team)

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  36. NFLNut Says:

    ****************

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA … Pat Kirwan is a loon … no wonder he’s no longer employed by an NFL Team.

Jameis is the youngest Pro Bowl QB in history, the ONLY QB in NFL history to start a career with back to back 4,000 yard seasons, and last year, when healthy he was #1 in the NFL in passing yards per game and top 5 in passer rating … THAT guy will EASILY be offered the richest contract in NFL history when the time comes FROM MULTIPLE TEAMS, if he wants it and doesn’t offer the Bucs a hometown discount so they have more cap flexibility, which knowing Jameis’ mindset, he may just do.

It amazes me that certain people get paid to talk about sports …

    ****************

  37. NFLNut Says:

BTW, had Jameis been a free agent this past offseason he would have easily got a longer and richer contract than Kirk Cousins got imho … Kirwan seems clueless.

  38. NFLNut Says:

    ******************

As for “the kid up in Tennessee” … that would be Marcus Mariota and if he has another year this season like he had last season, where he throws more INT’s than TDs and has a passer rating in the 70s with goofs like DeShone Kizer and Trevor Siemian, he will likely never get a second contract from the Titans, even if their running game and defense carries him to the playoffs again.

I think Mariota gets his 5th year extension no matter what, but it’s all about the “second contract” where a QB really gets paid, and if Mariota puts up another horrid season, I think come 2019 he’ll be fighting with a rookie to be the Titans starter and by 2020, will be on another team as a backup … similar to RG3 with the Ravens.

However, in all honestly, I do believe Mariota will be much better this year, and even good enough to re-inspire confidence in the Titans organization, and that he will therefore earn a lucrative second contract with the Titans.

    *******************

  39. D-Rome Says:

I really like Jameis Winston and I hope he is exonerated but Pat Kirwin is correct on this. If Jameis Winston is suspended because of this Uber Investigation then the Jameis Winston era in Tampa is over.

  40. SCBucsFan Says:

If we don’t pay him someone will. Then we have Ryan Griffin.

  41. StPeteBucsFan Says:

First an observation. Some posters here have pointed to this as a non story because people in Tampa Bay do not care about it and so are unaware. That was a phone call in freaking Naples! At least some folks care. Although I concede it’s mostly hard core fans and not the average guy who is not following that closely.
Most fans are not as observant as JBF posters.

Seems to me we have two issues here.
His play on the field. Needs work but he’s on schedule IMHO. Last year was an injury filled aberration for both #3 and the entire team.

Off the field is different. I’ve always shared TBBF’s concern…why didn’t #3 tell the Bucs in confidence. Perhaps he did and the Bucs are spinning.

I’m as unhappy as all here with the NFL dragging it’s heels. So I see three possibilities…
1.) It just goes away as TBBF suggested yesterday

2.) The NFL suspends #3 without any real evidence. If that happens I’m not going to hold it against #3 and will wait and see how he plays the rest of the year.

3.) Somehow (I can’t imagine) the NFL finds incriminating evidence. That changes everything for me.

If I had to bet…I go back to #1…they’re going to let it just die a slow death.

  42. Kobe Faker Says:

The Bucs tore up last year of Mike Evans rookie contract…

If Mariota or any of the younger QBs get a new 2nd contract…

“Jaboo wont be stepping onto the field in 2019 without minimum 25 milly (Derek Carr)”

    Antoine Winston

  43. Bird Says:

    It won’t be 20 mil a year.

It will be close to 30 mil a year.

Cousins ain’t elite and that’s what he got.
It’s time. We need to see his best

  44. mark2001 Says:

Hate to break it to you guys, but he is right. You have to look at the contract status. He has one more year on his original contract…and will be looking for a whopping raise in the next contract. And if he flames out, the Bucs are dead for years. We have to get this right, or it will mean another half decade to rebuild this team with a new coach, GM and starting QB. In the meantime other star players will be aging. This year is pivotal for Jameis and this organization. And if you don’t get that, you are blinded by the Pewter shades.

  45. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Letting Jameis go without a top replacement would be stupid. If necessary next year, draft a QB in the first round and let them compete, but Jameis is the best QB this team has EVER had. He is not so easy to replace as fringe fans think.

  46. Eric Says:

This guy always has and always will be surrounded by controversy. You dont get that many bad situations unless you are actually bad at least sometimes. As a professional firefighter you know where there is smoke there is fire, how much fire is undetermined until you peel back the facade but make no mistake a fire nonetheless. I could deal with the drama if he actually won for us but 5-11 is not enough winning for anyone not enamoured with FSU.

  47. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @mark

Technically they could use the 5th year option on him for 2019; which would pay him the average of the top 10 QBs at the position; but it would not require a long extension.

Let’s just all hope he isn’t suspended; and has his best year yet while leading us to a winning record so we can give him a massive extension and all finally agree that QB is solved on this team.

  48. nate_tweetz Says:

Jameis has put up numbers in his first 3 years that rank up there with some of the best 3 statistical years of any QB in NFL history and at a younger age. Even while playing hurt/missing games last season.

  49. JonBuc Says:

I listen to Kirwan and Jim Miller ( who is good…yet unrecognizable from his playing days…must have an all access pass at Abe’s 😉 ) on satellite radio quite a bit…Kirwan rarely has a good thing to say about the team…wasn’t he a scout/janitor at One Buc Place once upon a time?

  50. Capt.Tim Says:

If a top QB drops to us in this QB rich draft, we damn well ought to think about drafting him!
Jameis, at year 3, was still showing rookie decision making skills. And he was surrounded by Talented OL, WRs, and TEs.
There are QBs driving their teams to the playoffs- with far less help than Jameis had last year.
    Fitz was 2-1
    Jameis was 3-10

At this point, we cant trust Jameis decision making on the field.
If the NFL gets film from that Fast food drive thru, validating the Uber drivers account of things- then we cant trust Jameis decisions off the field.

Its a WB rich draft. You can always get you value back on a QB. If the draft goes by, and we pass on a talented young QB with our high draft pick, we may regret it when the NFL reaches their findings.

QB is the most important position on the team. We have reason to be concerned about ours, both short term and long term.

Wisdom says we cover our bases

  51. LouisFriend Says:

24 years old, a VERY young guy going into his 4th season. In this situation, we’re talking about a guy who is at this point mostly a good starter that has YET to come into his prime both in maturity and playing level. Talking heads don’t care about all the factors that give a guy a losing record as a starter, but I guarantee you the Bucs do. Is he there yet? Of course not. But look at the end of 2017 and tell me that’s not a guy worth investing in.

No way in hell do the Bucs let Jameis walk unless he regresses in 2018 AND 2019. Because they will pick up that option, or extend him.

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  53. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @SPBF

I could be dead wrong about this going away….but to me, it’s the best result…..perhaps the NFL will at some point announce that there was no corroboration of the account from the driver……
Taking into consideration there was no police report…..and more importantly, no civil suit…..no attempt to settle, from what we can tell.

I checked (someone let me know if I’m wrong)….but the last news of any kind on this was 1/8/18…..and that was generated by a local source….no national news.

This thing appears to be dead except on JBF and the occasional mention on air.

  54. Walter Seidel Says:

    Bye bye Jameis

  55. Capt.Tim Says:

They are showing Buc/Panthers on NFL network.
If you watch- focus on DEs and Oline

  56. Jjones Says:

The main problem is the investigation most likely wont be done until after the draft. If they make a ruling before OTA’s and mini camp he might be barred from entering the building possibly. If that happens he’ll be playing catch up and how ready will he be? His chemistry with Djax surely won’t be there.

  57. Buc4life Says:

Clown statement by Kirwan…talking out of his ass…Jameis will get paid here no question…Jameis needs to protect the ball better…Mariota needs to prove he can win from the pocket thats a big difference

  58. Not there yet Says:

Titans didn’t make the playoffs because of the quarterback and we didn’t miss the playoffs because of the quarterback. He’ll get off regardless because he’s sure worth more coin than Glennon it is what it is. Cousins is an average qb but when him, Glennon and guys like that are getting big contacts I think barring off field issues he’ll be talked about as the first qb in franchise history to get a second contact which is pathetic all in itself

  59. Pistol Pete Says:

Don’t pound me but it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibilities….What if the investigation has revealed some damning evidence against Jameis.
Would the Bucs sit quietly giving zero indication they are in the market for a “franchise QB” and hope that one of the 5 (I include Lamar Jackson) QB’s are there for the taking at 7?
If yes, who would you want them to draft?
The downside of Jameis may outweigh all the “potential” he has shown.
Just curious to see what you think we do “if” news breaks that he is going to be in deep trouble.

  60. Eric Says:

    yes we do.

  61. KfromFLA Says:

I listen to NFL Network every day, and I can say with 100% honesty that I have NEVER heard Pat Kirwan say one good thing about Jameis Winston without a very strong caveat. In the first year when “the kid up in Tennessee” had some better statistics, I had to suffer through all out Jameis Winston bashing every time the subject came up about either of them. Now that Jameis is better than “the kid up in Tennessee” in every way except having a team around him, Kirwan never compares them anymore. He spent all of last year saying “the kid up in Tennessee” needed more help, while Winston had a worse O-line, lesser RB help, and the worst defense in the NFL, and was still much better statistically than “the kid up in Tennessee”. But those obvious statistical differences do not matter to Kirwan.

Pat Kirwan made his opinion known about Jameis Winston, now I will make my opinion known about him. I listened a few years back as he said that Cam Newton did not deserve a huge contract as Cam was up for his latest contract; while Cam went on to be League MVP shortly thereafter. I see Pat Kirwan as the type of old-school FORMER GM (for a reason) that would draft a black QB just so he could make him a wide receiver and see it as a community service. He finds negativity in every single comment about Jameis Winston. In MY opinion, Pat Kirwan is the most dangerous kind racist because he has a national audience and has the skills to spread constant negativity without raising his tiki-torch or donning his custom head-gear; plus, he gets paid to do it.

How many of those QBs who started 4 years and couldn’t make the play-offs played with the crap the Bucs have been?

  63. AlteredEgo Says:

Kfrom….Father Dungy made his opinion know too….he just speaks softly

  64. JB Says:

JW has some big decisions to make as he needs to cut out certain habits and people out of his life if he wants to make the next step. The talent is there, he just has to do what’s best for him and his career.

  65. BrianBucs Says:

Winston will never be a championship calibre franchise QB, here or elsewhere. He doesn’t have the mental makeup. He will always be surrounded by controversy for his actions both on and off the field because of his arrogance and immaturity.
It would be a huge mistake for the Glazers to drop a huge contract on this guy unless it is strictly incentive based.

  66. Reality_43 Says:

I believe Jamies will be fine if he isn’t suspended.
The analogy earlier by @JJBucfan was spot on when comparing him to Favre.

It took until year 4 for Favre to do anything special with TD/Int ratio and then 3 years later he won the Super Bowl after throwing 39 TDs.

Winston is on a VERY SIMILAR path.
And by the way Favre threw 29 INTs versus only 19 TDs in his 3rd year.
Then 3 years later won the SB.

This team is much closer than most on here realize.

I really believe that if Winston isn’t suspended the Bucs take a huge step forward this year, however if he is suspended, it could get ugly!!

  67. doolnutts Says:

I still think if Winston(24) has an iffy season again next year we keep him throughout his rookie deal and then keep franchise tagging him until we see some real improvement. If he goes through an entire rookie contract (5) years and 1 or 2 franchise tags and still doesn’t show us what we need I think we would all agree we could let him go… That being said I he is still very young and I have faith he will fix his turnovers and improve overall.

  68. Horse Liver Says:

With even a modestly below average defense the Bucs would have made the playoffs in 2015 and or 2016. Heck even last year. It’s like a broken record around here. Jameis isn’t perfect but he is not the major obstacle from making the playoffs. When opposing quarterbacks post an average QBR > 100 against your defense and complete 70% of their passes, you’re not going to win many games.

  69. feelthepewterpower Says:

“His final touchdown pass of the 2017 season — a 39-yard throw with nine seconds left that completed Tampa Bay’s comeback victory over the New Orleans Saints in the season finale on Dec. 31 — gave him 69 for his career, breaking Dan Marino’s record for the most NFL TD passes before turning 24 years old (which Winston did six days later).

Winston’s 11,636 career passing yards are the third-most for an NFL player three years into his career, trailing only Andrew Luck and Peyton Manning. His 69 TD passes are the seventh-most by an NFL QB through his first three seasons.”

  72. DanBucsFan Says:

Kirwin is a stubborn old man who is no longer capable of working for an NFL team in the front office. 20 million is the going rate for AVERAGE starti g QB in totays NFL. Sam Bradford just got 19 million and he obly plays 10 games a year at most, Keenum, just got paid by Denver close to 20 million, and the grand wizard of them all Cousins got 20+ guaranteed. So IMO Winston if he doesn’t take a big leap and puts up his normal numbers he will get around 25 million annually from about 27 teams in the NFl, if he happens to progress in the next 2 years while still 25 years old he will more than likely get 30 million and the check will be signed by TEAM GLAZER ! Put that in your pipe and smoke it Kirwin!!!!!

  73. Bucko40 Says:

Winston is facing a minimum 4 games suspension for his involvement in the incident in AZ in 2016. At the least he failed to report the incident to his team. At the most this is the 3rd time he’s been accused(or got away) of Sexual misconduct. His AZ incident now opens up he entire FSU allegations for extensive investigation. This coming season is already in tanked because of this clown. The Bucs only hope is if Fitzpatrick can win enough games during Winston’s absence

    —————————
Winston didn’t “get away” with anything from the rape allegation. If you read the case facts, you’d know the FSU accuser’s story was full of holes and changed her story several times.

Also, how do you know the NFL is going to issue any suspension. In order to issue a suspension, they’ll have to show probable cause (meaning: there is sufficient evidence to show that Winston was in the car alone with the uber driver based on available records). If the NFL can’t show probable cause and decide to suspend Winston without evidence, you can be sure that the player’s union, the team, and others will back Winston in any appeal or lawsuit. Like someone mentioned above, the NFL would be foolish to open that can of worms considering a new union contract is on the horizon……..

  75. Bucko40 Says:

Pistol Pete- Mariota Redzone Offense is far superior. Both Winston and Mariota both played injured last year. Mariota finds ways to win games. Winston finds ways to lose games. You would think that a guy that that can put up Stats the way Winston does that he’d win more games. The final comparisons is Mariota has actually led his team to the Playoffs and Winston hasn’t. You add in all the off field issues with Winston and he’s not worth the risk of a Big Contract. The Bucs need to treat Winston the way the Redskins treated Cousins. Let him play out his 5 year deal and Franchise him for 1 year. If by then he hasn’t produced then it’s time to move on.

  76. Lord Cornelius Says:

NFL network has the week 16 Carolina game on right now. It’s crazy how much our team shoots itself in the foot. Winston playing an amazing 2nd half of course. The TD pass to Bobo Wilson was extremely impressive.

Held to FG on another great drive because Peppers came free for a huge sack.

Watching this and it’s obvious we need more quick passing options and more efficient red zone plays then huge deep drops and asking Winston to make a low % TD throw like the Wilson one. Great play but it doesn’t need to be that hard if you draw up a better game plan. Having big deep drops and long developing plays is also a recipe for any QB to be prone to more hits and more subsequent fumbles.

    Hm wtfdik tho

Joe seems as though you should join the ranks with the America’s
    Quaterback,pro-bowler Jameis winston basher/haters.
An injured qb with no ol line no run game and no pash rush a pee wee secondary. But he’s still a top 5 qb in stats go figure.

  79. Joe Says:

    Jgiles87:

Not sure how you came to the conclusion Joe has turned on Jameis.

  80. webster Says:

    @ bucko40

You are an idiot. Jameis has more 4th qtr comebacks than mariota. The bucs lost five games because the defense couldnt keep a lead that winston just gave them with less than 2 mins to go. What was jameis suspose to do, play defensive end or qb? Mariota sucked throwing 12 tds and 15 ints. The scrub cant even avg 1 td a game. No he did not carry his team to the playoffs. The titans running game and defense led them to the playoffs. Go cheer for mariota with your made up false narrative because winston will be here a long while.

  81. Rod Munch Says:

Can we please just get to the draft so it’s not the same story posted every single day… I know you got to post something Joe, but man, you’re making me miss those Doug Martin hate columns.

  82. webster Says:

    @ bucko40

Third time winston has been accused of sexual assault? So not only do you make up stuff but you cant count either? So the false allegation in college, uber and what? Oh thats right, you have proven you like to make up stuff. Go cheer for mariota

  83. NOSBOS Says:

D@$!,it don’t get no more BLOOD RAWer than that..

  84. passthebuc Says:

It’s not what Kirwan said, it is more about Jamis. If you throw a 5 year hundred million dollar deal to JW, you have hitched your wagon to him for 5 years regardless of what happens. Since I rate a QB differently than most, I would have never picked him. However we have him and now what? Yes, I would trade him and trade him this year. I also would trade Evans. I think those 2 would give me 6 very high picks in the next 2 drafts. I would use those picks to beef up my 2ndary and D line. I would use my normal picks to find my running backs and beef the O line. I would now find an above average QB (4th Rd) with emphasis on IQ. Lest you forget, we won the Superbowl with an average QB. I still think the game is won in the trenches and the QB needs to be good enough to take what the other team gives you. This was the Dungy theory and he was 139-69 over 13 years.
In addition, you need coaching and scouting to make it happen.

  85. Gobucs Says:

Lmao I don’t care what the stats say.

No way on this planet that Winston is a top 5 QB

Not even the best in his own division.

    Lmao.

(adding that Winston was hurt and missed games in his 3rd year seems relevant to that tally as well I’d say).

Next post – 4 minutes later
    ben Says:
    “Winston is average”

You can’t make this stuff up folks. Truth is stranger than fiction when it comes to perception.

  87. Lord Cornelius Says:

Damn another great drive in a key point in the game.

3rd and 12 from our own 10 and a 30 yard rope to ME perfectly in between the dep zone coverage. Overcomes 2 offensive penalties.

Get to the 40 and run Martin for -2 yards. Good job Koetter! Play it REAL safe..

2nd and 13 – weird a4ss fake screen with WInston running to the left. Not sure wtf the play design was but this was broken as f*ck. Good job Koetter!

3rd and 15 – dumps a screen to get it to the 33 yard line. 50 yard FG.

Hm playcalling sure looked terrible here. A 1st down likely wins the game and your QB is on fire so you hand it to your worst RB. Maybe it was a tank just like the last game of the year play call that Winston ignored lol

  88. NOSBOS Says:

In Fameis defense some here are making Andy Dalton comps. Unfair. Fameis has never had a top tier Defense or a running game to support him.

  89. ImtiredAnd87isright Says:

Writing on the wall Jameis has not been the reason we have sucked. Last I heard was it takes a team effort to be great in the NFL. The problem has been constant change in coaching, and horrible defense with no running game. Most super bowl winning teams have those three. Go Bucs!

  90. Lord Cornelius Says:

    50 yard FG

    Missed Wide Right

    That part matters.

Now time to watch the defense lose the game with a 4 point lead and a few minutes left

Why did I tune into this game today

    GO Bucs!

  91. Pickgrin Says:

Winston “dislikers” coming out of the woodwork today – LOL
(hate is such an ugly word)

  92. Lord Cornelius Says:

lmao i almost forgot about the Chris Baker false start on 4th and 3 with the game on the line

  93. pelbuc Says:

If JW gets suspended bc of the Uber investigation, then it will be his off field immaturity plus his on field refusal to learn not to turn the ball over that will doom this team. Mariota was the safer and better pick. I don’t care for JW’s rah rah crap and supposed leadership skills. I’d rather have a leader by example. Bucs need to go back to creating a strong defense, that’s always been this franchise’s identity even in good and bad years.

  94. Jgiles87 Says:

    Pat Kirwan’s NFL career:

    1984 Tampa Bay Bucs: 6-10
    1985 Tampa Bay Bucs: 2-14
    1986 Tampa Bay Bucs: 2-14
    1989 New York Jets: 4-12
    1990 New York Jets: 6-10
    1991 New York Jets: 8-8
    1992 New York Jets: 4-12
    1993 New York Jets: 8-8
    1994 New York Jets: 6-10
    1995 New York Jets: 3-13
    1996 New York Jets: 1-15
    1997 New York Jets: 9-7*
Pat Kirwan’s NFL resume for franchise’s he was a part of is 66-158, with only one winning season. Those losing teams had NUMEROUS draft opportunities in the top 10 and they all failed except for 1 year. You are what your record says you’re. For Pat Kirwan that is s person whose NFL experience is defined by failure and losing. Why Joe or anybody would listen to his advice is beyond me. No fan of Lovie, but at least he was a part of a winning franchise that went to the Super Bowl, yet people like myself and Joe will knock him, and then talk about Pat Kirwan’s draft and free agency advice. Kinda makes you think, doesn’t it?
This is just silly. So as a low level Bucs scout in the 80s, he’s responsible for the team’s record? As an assistant linebackers coach under Monte Kiffin with the Jets, Kirwan is tied to the wins and losses? This is just dumb. The guy wasn’t even a GM. If you don’t think Kirwan’s opinion has value, ok, but he’s a major influencer in the media and has the respect of many coaches and executives. He’s also very entertaining and clearly watches film. His book was good stuff, as well.–Joe

  96. Pickgrin Says:

LC – after GMC just told everybody in the huddle DON’T JUMP OFFSIDES!!!

  97. JA Says:

    @Joe
I know who Kirwin is and I stand by my statement.
If a film guru speaks, I’ll listen. Kirwin goes deeper into the better teams because he probably pays more attention. As for the Bucs, my guess is he passes on film, spouts generalizations, and takes a coffee break. If he views Jameis by wins and losses, I think he should balance his concern against a defense that refuses to protect a lead.

  98. JA Says:

    Sorry, Kirwan.

  99. Oneilbucs Says:

Again people football is a team game not a quarter back game. We have ranked 32 in every thing on defense now tell me any quarter back that can win with that. MAROITO is not better than Winston. Maroito have a better team .There defense is not 32 in every thing.

  100. BrianBucs Says:

I continually said before that draft the neither Winston or Mariotta were true franchise QB’s. They both have repeatedly proved me correct.

  101. Oneilbucs Says:

Winston is a good quarter back. I have learned that most people on this site don’t know football. Tom Brady other than 1 or 2 years dink and dunk his way to the hall of fame . His oc came on live television and said they won on defense for 3 super bowls. Tom Brady never played on a bad low rank defense. Give Winston what wenz, golf, Ryan, Borttes have n he will win easy. Y’all just believe what the media say. When you build a team you all ways build defense first not quarter back. Ask Philly, Rams, Jacksonville. This team will be stupid to trade Winston he will win some where else.

  102. Crack3rK Says:

If Blake Bortles can take Jax to an AFC Championship game last year, imagine what a mid-level defense and a running game could do for Winston. I do believe he can lead the Bucs to the playoffs. Remember how Bortles was done last year– until he wasn’t? As long as JW’s shoulder is good and he doesn’t come down with a bad case of Uberitis, I think he emerges this year.

  106. Arealbucsfan Says:

So we get rid of a decent qb jus because he isn’t Tom Brady, Rodgers? It took Stafford a while to become elite. Jus pick up his 5th year option and then franchise him if u have to.

  107. Arealbucsfan Says:

And what’s a “franchise qb” to some of u guys? Someone that can win all by himself? I mean cmon. Does he need to be clutch every dam game, complete every pass? Winston IS our franchise qb.

  108. Mike Johnson Says:

Jameis has learned just about all Koetter has to offer him. Its all on Jameis now to step up his play. 4 yrs in and its time for him lead this team. Not just by comments and..I gotta get better saying. Bucs are gonna get him a new RB and probably a lineman. Get it done Jameis. Its time to go to work.

  109. Frank Pillow Says:

Patty K is delusional. Hands down, Jameis gives us a better chance to win one Sundays than any QB in this franchise’s history. Yes, I said it. No, I’m not blind to his fumbles and boneheaded ways- but he IS improving. Add a legitimate OL/running game/ backfield threat to help the kid out a little and I’m convinced he’ll take the next step.

  110. Alanbucsfan Says:

Do you really want to put him in $20 million / year range-
Economics of NFL dictate the situation
NFL is legalized monopoly, highly popular, earns billions in tv revenue and stadiums are publically financed and qb is most important position
Jameis numbers say he is an elite qb.
Tony Romo never won squat, never reached a championship game- but he’s a sure hall of famer
Jameis has proven in college that he can win with a team around him
When they have a playoff caliber team, and they are getting there- Jameis will win

  111. Gruden4President Says:

This is absolutely a do or die season for Winston m he doesn’t make it this year he has got to go. I don’t care how old he was when he came into the league he has been at it going on his 4th year. Doesn’t take 5 years to develop a QB and JW3 clearly regressed last year

  112. Jarod lauderdale Says:

This franchise for almost a decade was bad after the glory days and before it.. Which means they stink it up after grudens first year and before dungys 2nd year.. Jameis is the least of our worries and flat out if you put a running game behind him and a halfway decent defence in place, they along with jameis will go places! Nuff said… Jameis is a really good football player with a chance to be really special if he stays consistently good.. We have to put him in better situations.. Hence better running back so the other teams d and coaches can’t sole focus on jameis and our defence to get him the ball back and how about some better coaching from coach K… Hmmm sounds about right to me.. Y’all saying jameis is a bum are dumb as a box of Friggen Rocks & should go be bandwaggoners somewhere

  113. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    BigHog

Try posting that Lovie crap in Urbana-Champaign. They will laugh you out of town.

Pickgrin….I totally understand your frustration. First can we all agree that some QB’s can carry a team a long way…other “average” QB’s may not carry their team but if they are competent they lead their team to a SB…see Trent Dilfer and NFLNuts favorite (just had to tease NN) Joe Flacco. Are they any better than average?

#3 is clearly better than average. The questions that remain when answered will tell us whether he is just good, very good, or great. It doesn’t matter since even an “average” QB can get us to the big game if the rest of the TEAM pitches in. Barring something off the field #3 is not going anywhere.

  114. Bobby M. Says:

Not a fan of Winston….never have been, especially at a #1 pick but he’s not going anywhere even if he does get suspended. Blake Bortles got the Jaguars to the AFC Championship. Winston is better then Bortles and Bortles got an extension. Reality is he’s good enough to extend…..He would have to do something on the same level of Vick to see the Bucs cut ties.

  115. BelleGladeBuc Says:

Joe, what you call silly, I call facts. Was there anything wrong with those numbers? Please correct me if there was. You also failed to include the fact that Pat Kirwan the director of player personnel for the New York Jets. The Director of player personnel’s job is to pull together all the information on a player, including input from team scouts and coaches, recruiting services and other sources, to present to the general manager and head coach. The New York Jets record under Pat Kirwan’s talent evaluation expertise was atrocious. He was a failure at talent evaluation. I don’t put a lot of merit into individuals talent evaluations as Kirwan’s with Jameis in this article because Kirwan has proven that he can’t evaluate talent, as the losing New York Jets demonstrated under his talent evaluation. Silly is listening to a proven failure when it comes to evaluating talent.

  116. gotbbucs Says:

Kirwin is 110% right. He’s gonna have to light the world on fire the next two years to gain my trust back.
He had offensive receiving weapons that most QBs in this league would dream about having and he didn’t win squat.
What do you think the elite QBs could have done with Evans, Jackson, Brate, and Howard? They would have consistently put up 40 points.

It’s this year or never with this team. If he sh!ts the bed this year he can expect a new head coach and GM and they aren’t going to give him a leash.

  117. BucEmUp Says:

It would be a crying shame, but woukd not surprise me one bit if Jameis never gets a chance to play with a slightly above average….or even average defense.

You Russel Wilson wins that championship without that good defense?

How about Joe flacco in Baltimore. Think he’s gonna make a run with a 32nd ranked secondary.

This team.would be dumb enough over pay the worst DC in the league and let.it ruin their young qbs chances in Tampa.

  118. Reverse Joe Says:

Another good post Joes!! Keep it up fellas! #Nomorefishing

  120. Lamarcus Says:

U can’t blame JW and his play all u want but I don’t think in the history of NFL that a Qb 20-24 years old overcame a Browns level franchise or any team for that matter to HOF stats or Superbowls. U can say Wentz Goff Prescott and co. did it. They won’t win without those good squads they have. Name a Qb today that can win for us that plays today? I say none

  121. NFLNut Says:

Matt Ryan will get close to $30mil per on his next contract …. Aaron Rodgers will get over $30mil per on his … and Jameis will get more than Rodgers … then the next year both Goff and Wentz will get more than Jameis … then the year after that Deshaun Watson and Trubisky will get more than Wentz and Goff … it’s just “next man up” … the only thing that would keep a solid young QB from being that “next man up” is if they have a horrible year like Mariota had last year; case in point – Blake Bortles.

  122. Miles August Says:

“Why do Pat’s opinions matter? Clearly the NFL executives don’t value his opinions. If they did, he would have a front office job and not be on the radio.”

I guess I could say the same thing about Mark Dominic.

Many teams fear starting over when pressed to pay a QB who was mediocre, but not bad. They often then overpay out of fear of going another direction.

Winston needs to clean up his decision making on and off the field. Although I hope it doesn’t happen, I wonder what will come of this Uber debacle. Imagine if he misses a game next season over that? The silly “eat this W” rant before the Saints game, his behavior in the later part of the season including the end of the Carolina game. This guy needs to grow up and stone the bonehead play and Oddball attempts at “vocal” leadership.

Whether Pat Kirwan’s teams during his front office career were outstanding or not isn’t the issue. He raises concerns that are legitimate. Alot of commentators on this board need to look objectively at Winston, as if he played for someone other than our home town club. How worthy of a big second contract would be he then? I want him to be successful, but he has sort of been a jackass and otherwise is no where near Elite.

  123. grafikdetail Says:

yeah lets get rid of a once in a decade type player & the best chance this franchise has ever had of having a stable & competent franchise QB because he’s not a one man team 🤦‍♂️ and kirwin has been hating on winston since day 1… so forget what he has to say…

Jameis Winston’s first 3 seasons stats with Bust LT Donovan Smith, Druggie Dougie at RB and potential future HOFmer Mike Evans.

Jameis was just as accurate as Peyton over the same time frame. Myth busted. 61 Total Turnovers for Jameis and 69 Total Turnovers for Peyton over the same time. Myth busted. Jameis was equally rated to Peyton over the same time period. Myth busted. Peyton had more TD but a worse ratio of TD:IMT than Jameis over the same time period. Myth busted. Peyton’s record was much better, but he had 2 HOF RB’s, 1 stud LT, and 1 HOF WR. Jameis has had an atrocious defense, Druggie Dougie at RB, Bust/Swinging Gate Donovan Smith at LT, and possible future HOFmer in Mike Evans and Desean Jackson for 1 year.

Two QB’s. Both #1’s. Very similar stats over the same time frame. One is white. One is African American. The African American gets criticized much harsher than the white quarterback ever did despite producing similar numbers. Makes you think.

With any semblance of a defense, this team would’ve already been in the playoffs the past two years. That’s the bottom line.

How much better does Winston have to play to pick up the slack for a mediocre defense and a below average DC who was inexplicably NOT fired? Well, basically he needs to turn into Tom Brady in just a few months time. NOT HAPPENING.
