This offseason has been remarkable for the number of trades made by NFL general managers.
The NFL, which largely treats the in-season trading deadline with all the fanfare of Arbor Day, started a trading frenzy right around the Super Bowl when the Chiefs sent quarterback Alex Smith to the Redskins. And the trading hasn’t stopped.
Just in the past two weeks or so we’ve seen two more trades: Brandin Cooks of the Belicheats to the Rams and backup quarterback Kevin Hogan from the Browns to the Redskins.
Even the Bucs got involved in the trading craze this offseason by shipping a third round pick to the Giants for defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul.
In the past, general managers coveted draft picks like gold and were reluctant to move them. Now, a new breed of general managers thinks otherwise. At the NFL owners meetings in Orlando last month, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht was asked about giving up a third round pick for JPP.
“Can you get that guy in the third round?” Licht asked rhetorically of the debate he had whether to consummate the deal. “Man, trust me, I love draft picks. I wish we had 20 of them.
“In order to get better — I talked about this with the owners, I’ve talked about this with Dirk [Koetter] — sometimes you have to strain to get better. In this case, it wasn’t easy to part with a third round pick but sometimes you have to strain.”
Given the recent 12-year history of the Bucs constantly urinating on their shoelaces in any and all efforts to find a decent pass rusher, Joe would argue, no, this franchise couldn’t find a consistent edge rusher with the third round pick.
If JPP can get eight sacks and the defense improves to maybe 20th overall and, most importantly, the Bucs win, that third-round ransom will have turned out to be a bargain.

THIS Bucs fan loves to hear this quote, because this time of year leading up to the #7 pick and SA-QUON, Say-gone Barkley…..mannnn, there could NOT be a BETTER smokescreen laid out there. Along with some of the local media constanly surmising that Licht will trade down, and the player visits around those…guesses.

Let me guess……..Buc coaches simply can’t develop young DEs…..in addition, they are unable to continue to coach up veteran DEs…..
So, the only draft picks we should be interested in are…..LBs, TEs or WRs…..oh wait, we have plenty of them.

After more reflection on another topic but similar one in this article….

That mentality…is HOW all the Neanderthal cave-dwellers dragging their bat along pining for sitting past at every draft slot SHOULD approach the supremely wise acquisition of Saquon Barkley for the entire multi-faceted organization of the Bucs. If Licht parts with 2 expensive or 3 semi-expensive picks or combo of players/picks) in this and future drafts, get your heads out of your arses and re-read @Joe’s comment above on how to comprehensively value a player acquisition. The sum total idiots.

I have absolutely no issue with giving up a 3rd rounder for JPP. It was a complete no brainer and a deal most thought New York would not consider. JPP is the real deal and the type of edge rusher we have needed since Simeon Rice left. This was Jason Lichts best move of his career and should get him a contract extension.

Saquon aside, very few draft picks are absolute “sure-fire”. Think of it this way: Cooks is an established threat and 3rd year player. He doesn’t need to acclimate and he should have a general knowledge of the NFL game. Would the Rams get that from a draft pick? The answer is: MAYBE. So, in this case, would you rather have the established NFL threat or the “potential” NFL threat.
I thought about this the other day and it makes perfect sense. They have their franchise QB, RB, and other young star players in key positions. Trading unknown draft picks for known NFL commodities is brilliant as long as you have a good foundation.

We got a definite starter who can play the run and pass…..I believe Bill Walsh was known for saying if a player has played at a high level before, odds favor them doing it again vs hoping a player that has never done it eventually will. Not only has JPP done it, he’s still been productive while being asked to do a lot AND he’s at a position that has a direct impact on the game. We’ve been burning 3rd rounders on back up RB (Simms), kicker that is out of the league (Aguayo) and a back up WR (Godwin)….we got a definite starter to pair with McCoy who’s an equal or possibly better talent as McCoy. To me that was a no brainer.

If only GMC “talent” could elevate other lineman…. Or he can live up to 6 pro bowls title champ and break a double team we should of been okay from the get go. But no we have to “strain” and cost us a 3rd round and about 45 million

I am demanding..better Defensive coaching by our invisiible gametime DC..Mr. Smith. Put players in position to get sacks. Give us some mixed coverages, Better schemes..anything Smitty!! We are sick and tired of the camera panning to you..sittting their on your A.. scanning the field with your binoculars. game after game. Your, “Better View” theory has not panned out producing 11 losses last year. So get your butt on the field and do some coaching,. You can get an assistant..the waterboy to sit in the pressbox. YOU..are needed on the playing field sir!!

A 3rd rounder for JPP is NOT ransom. You can’t get that guy in this draft for a 3rd. It’s puzzling where people are coming from when they complain we gave up the farm for JPP. We gave up a nice mobile home for JPP, not the farm.

This is not a particularly good draft for DE prospects. We HAD to have a “professional” DE and that’s JPP. That’s a no brainer to me as well.
@TBBF That was some nice snark. We can’t coach DB’s…DE’s and some here would include QB’s and OL….dang this team has some bull headed players who never paid attention in all these years in football. lol

BOBBYM,TO put Godwin in the Simms and the Roberto conversation is laughable.he had to pay his dues ,what was the bucs gonna do start him in front of Evans or djax?the kid showed that he is gonna be a very good player for years to come!I would say that is a very good pick for a 3rd round draft pick!If anyone knows what the hell Bobby is talking about,please explain it to me!he totally lost me when he put Godwin in that statement!

Mike JOhnson,with the talent level of the defensive line last year on the bucs,you could have had Monte muffin or dick labeau running the defense and results would have been the same!the talent level was awful on that dline!I remember Monte being in the booth as defensive coordinator very often.rather in the booth or on the field,it didn’t matter where Mike Smith was or what defense he called it simply wasn’t gonna be successful with that dline!You can’t blitz often in the NFL before you get your ass handed to you!so just stop with the Mike Smith crap about not being on the field!
