Bucs Work Out NC State RB

April 4th, 2018

Bucs OC Puts ACC RB Through Drills.

Quite honestly Joe doesn’t know much about this Nyheim Hines, a running back for North Carolina State. But it seems like Joe better start brushing up on him.

It seems the Bucs have more than a passing interest in Hines, who averaged 5.6 yards a carry as he had a breakout season for the Wolfpack. Going deep on his background from Lance Zierlein of NFL.com, it seems Hines is a mixed bag. He has played slot receiver for NC State but he is inconsistent in catching. Hines is rather quick running a 4.38 40-yard dash but has trouble reading blocks.

There is no word if Hines can pass pro.

Jenna Laine of ESPN reports Bucs offensive coordinator Todd Monken put Hines through the drills in a private workout recently.

I’m told that N.C. State running back Nyheim Hines worked out privately for Bucs offensive coordinator Todd Monken the day after his pro day last month. The two also went over video and board work. Hines clocked a 4.38 at the combine, the fastest 40 for all running backs. He can also return kicks.

Now Joe’s experience is if the Bucs are spending cash to send a coordinator to go through a private workout and a chalk talk, then they have more than a passing interest in a guy. Teams, especially the Bucs, are not going to p!ss away time and money for a coordinator to throw away a day working a guy out just for a smokescreen.

Per Zierlein, Hines is a late second-day or early third-day draft pick.

    Never heard of him

I’m a Nyheim Hines fan. I would rather him over guys who get more media hype like Bo Scarborough and Kalen Ballage.

IF, and its a big if, Koetter wants to give Peyton Barber a shot to be the guy, Nyheim Hines would be a great compliment to pair with him. And Hines could be there when the Bucs are on the clock in round 4.

  3. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Yes. If its the 4th or late 3rd. Hopefully we have a trade down and can get a banger like Guice and Hines later would be a nice complement.

He is a track guy with good receiving and kick return ability. Small but compact and able to hit the home run.

There’s a ton, of very good running back prospects in this draft.

    THUNDER & LIGHTING
    • KALEN BALLAGE – ARIZONA STATE | 40 YARD DASH: 4.46
    • NYHEIM HINES – N.C. STATE | 40 YARD DASH: 4.38

Hines is interesting. Teams trying to find the next Cohen, which I understand. For my money, of the second round options most likely to be on the board, I prefer Nick Chubb as a second round pick vs Hines as a fourth. Chubb slipped due to the injury, which he appears to have fully recovered from, and splitting carries with Michel. With all of the attention that Michel is getting, Chubb is being overlooked somewhat. Any player that produces the second most rushing yards in SEC history behind only Herschel Walker needs to be seriously considered. Plus if the Bucs are going to go to a power scheme, he fits the bill. My draft is looking like him in the second, a trade down option at 7 (I think the three will be gone, one QB will be on the board and someone will want the Bucs pick). Depending on how far the Bucs go down, they can pick up, Davenport, Vea, Wynn, James, Hernandez or Jackson. Then Chubb in the second. Then a CB or Safety in round 3, and the best O line prospect in round 4.

We need 2 RBs…..he very well could be a good choice for one of them.

  8. Bnomo Says:

How good as a kick returner? Bucs need one.

  9. Realbucfan941 Says:

Funny 4.3 speed and he got caught from behind several times in that video. Returns looked great but he had a full head of steam some guys were back peddling. Not saying he isn’t fast seemed like he should have housed more of those.

  10. Lunchbox Says:

If they are looking for a RB that can also return kicks, Penny is the guy. If I’m not mistaken, he gained the most yards in college football last year, while simultaneously being the most dangerous return man. 5 or 6 kickoff a returned for a TD I think. We’d probably have to use our 2nd on him though to get him

  11. Big Country Says:

I think you will see the Bucs go two DBs and two RBs in the top 4 pics.

  12. Aaron May Says:

I need to prepare myself for the Bucs to go

    1 – S
    2 – CB
    X
    4 – Rb

We need So much help on the backend I can see the bucs working the draft to fill eeds and they just happened to be the top players on our board card…crossing my fingers if we go S or Cb in 1st round we traded down…

  13. BucFanFromOhio Says:

    @Aaron

I think you’re pretty close there. I do think the Bucs trade down in the 1st and target a S or CB (or defense in general) in top 2 rounds. If we pick a RB I don’t see it happening until roounds 3 or 4 (assuming we pick up a 3rd in a trade down).

  14. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    WTF ?
4.38 speed, getting run down from behind by ACC cornerbacks ?

  15. Pickgrin Says:

If we haven’t addressed RB yet by day 3 he might be an option…

Looks like a decent value pick in rd 5 since he’s got some speed and has had success with returns.

The double spin move after a quick catch in the flat at 1:35 was impressive.

Hard to see the Bucs not going after one of the top 5 or 6 backs though after what happened with McNichols last year.

We only have 2 RBs on the roster as of now – so maybe we go Nick Chubb in the 2nd and grab this Wolfpack RB in the 5th if he’s still there as more of a 3rd down/receiver/gadget play/returner guy.

How well (and reliably) can he catch? – and is he teachable regarding becoming a decent blocker? These are the things coach Monken was likely trying to determine.

  16. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Luv

I know man. I feel this years class is deeper than last years. All the more reason to not take a RB top 10.

  17. AlteredEgo Says:

Also in the later rounds or UDFA

Martez Carter 5-9 205 Grambling State

  18. BucDan Says:

I do not care who the Bucs pick up at RB – AS LONG AS:

-the guy is a burner aka so tired of monster whole leading to 15 yard gains. There has been no breakaway speed on this team at RB in FOREVER

-the guy (or other guy, given LUV’s suggestion) ENJOYS contact aka gets that extra yard or two falling forward every play

I agree with LUV that these are plentiful in this draft. The question is: Will we pick the right one(s)?

  19. darin Says:

I hope they get another RB if they get Hines. I’m all for a guy with 4.3 speed that returns kicks too. Hines if he makes it to round 4 and Guice, Michel, Chubb or Jones.

  20. Capt.Tim Says:

Another in the Bucs endless quest for a kick returner.

Sooner or later they’ll hit on one

This kid has speed and moves. Should be available in later rounds.
Might be a 6th round pick.

  21. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

HEY BUC FAITHFUL….what do you think about this idea???

Since Arizona at #15 needs to trade up for a QB and very likely will to either #5 Denver, or with the Bucs at #7 if a QB is still on the board at #7 the following:

    Bucs receive: RB David Johnson + 2018 15th overall (1st round) + ARZ 5th round pick 2018

Arizona receives: #7 overall pick + DeSean Jackson (their 3rd biggest draft need) + Bucs 4th round pick 2018

I think if you really, really mull it over, this makes a ton of sense for both teams.

    How Arizona Wins in This:

DJax gives them another instant playmaker in Fitzgerald’s final season, allows ARZ to get their QB of the future, plus ARZ can use their 2nd rounder on a young RB.

    How Bucs Wins in This:

David Johnson (second to a brand new Barkley) gives the Bucs the proven rushing/receiving threat both outside and between the tackles that fits perfectly in our scheme and far better than 2nd tier draft RB crop, allows us to unload DJax’s $11 million dollar salary for Godwin perhaps, still allows Bucs to grab Guard Hernandez at #15 or trade down again, allows Bucs to grab either DE or CB in 2nd round.

Freaking brilliant….roll it around. Respond, if you have the good sense to really see it.

    Go Bucs!

  22. destinjohnny Says:

not much wiggle and he doesn’t play to his speed.

  23. 813bucboi Says:

    guice and bo scarbrough!!!!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!!

  24. Bucsfanman Says:

Good return guy, perhaps. Get legit talent though if we’re not getting Nelson. If we land Nelson, we can look at these type of guys later in the draft.

  25. John meeks Says:

This makes me believe the bucs are trying to find a return man with homerun potential, speed kills!if he lasted until the 4th round then our GM would snag him but he will not be picked by us before the 4th round because there is way to much talent better than him at running back and we must grab one in the 2nd round being we have no 3rd round pick

  26. ndog Says:

This is their Charles Simms replacement, book it.
