Time To Entice The Colts

“Dear Indy …”
The Colts issued the strongest draft signal over the weekend by trading the No. 3 overall pick to the Jets for their No. 6 overall pick and two second-rounders in 2018, plus a second-round pick next year.
It should represent a green light for the Bucs.
The Colts are not drafting a quarterback, and there’s a solid chance their No. 6 pick is up for sale. And who better than the Bucs trade up one slot to get it now?
The Bucs own the No. 7 overall pick and a trade like that virtually would guarantee Tampa Bay gets its paws on either defensive end Bradley Chubb, running back Saquon Barkley or guard Quenton Nelson. Also, if the Bucs and Colts flop first-round picks and the Bucs cough up a fourth-round pick to do it, then the Colts would be bertain the Bucs are out of the QB market and a team might still trade up with Indianapolis to get any QB leftovers out of the top-5 picks.
Joe would advise Jason Licht to start working on the Colts immediately. They need offensive line help. How bout dangling Caleb Benenoch?
What about J.R. Sweezy? (Joe’s not joking. It always pays to see if a team is foolish.)
What about getting creative and working Kendell Beckwith into a broader deal with multiple draft picks? The Colts need linebacker help and the Bucs are very deep at the position.
There is great value in that No. 6 pick versus what the Bucs have at No. 7 . The Colts are in a selling mood and it’s worth a serious effort by Licht right now, not waiting until draft week.

I’d trade up IF ONLY one of the 3 top prospects is there: Chubb, Nelson, Barkley. If 2/3 are there at 6, then hang tight and get the remaining stud.
I hope the Bills trade up to #6 and take a QB. That would be ideal, see 4 QBs go in the top 6 guarantees us the opportunity to draft one of Nelson, Chubb or Barkley.

Theres no way the Colts let us move up with a 4th round pick. Its worth more than that. If Barkley or Chubb is available at 6 I would try to work something but I am sorry I am not moving up to get a guard Nelson or otherwise.

I think the Colts knew exactly what they were doing, they figured with this, they stay in front of the Bucs and still get either Barkley, Chubb or Nelson, basically the same needs, so why would they play trade partners with the Bucs, if they did not want their choice of the the three, they will trade back for more picks, but with the picks they got, they now can get one of the three and fill holes with all their other picks in the top two rounds, I think they now have 3 picks in the top 49

I think Licht should inquire about trading up, but why would the Colts want to trade down right now for only a 4th round pick (or Beckwith)? It is almost a certainty that there will be 3 QBs gone in the first 5 picks, and there is a consensus top 3 of non-QBs in Barkley, Chubb and Nelson. This means that Indy is in a great spot to either sell to the highest bidder whoever may want to come up for the 4th QB or take what’s left of those top 3 elite non-QB prospects.
If the Bucs can get to that position and only give up a 4th rounder than Licht would have fully pulled the fleece over Indy’s eyes.

Ballard is on record as saying that this trade allows them to get someone they think will be there at 6. Never believe a GM in March. –Joe They didn’t move down not thinking about who the pick would be. I think it is Chubb. Could be Nelson, whom they could desperately use as well but G men have been linked to him as too. We have too many similar needs as the Colts for a deal to work out. Sit tight at 7, we have good chance at either Nelson or Chubb if we hold our cards and stay patient. If for some reason both are gone, and I am assuming that Barkley is going to the Browns, then trade back with the Bills or some other mid round team and grab another 2 plus picks.

i’m sorry joe but you were way off with that one . first off if the colts were to trade down again it would probably be with a team desperate for a qb that is willing to give up a load of picks something we don’t have the luxury of doing knowing we don’t have a boat load a picks and have holes to fill with those picks . 2nd if we were for some reason looking to move up i highly doubt they dangle a lb they think very highly of who they just drafted last yr, much more likely they would try dangling guys on expiring contracts or 2 yrs away .. like devante bond , ryan smith , benenoch could be a option as well .. but why would licht want to move up ??? 4 qbs go in the top 7 like it’s expected and a damn good player will be there for the bucs . no need to get desperate

If the Bucs stay at 7 then I think there is a very high probability they will either draft Quenton Nelson or Bradley Chubb.

LVD has NOT had a complete season since schiano the great was run off by cancer93. He starts slow and was a non factor the first part of the last 3 season.

I Chubb and Nelson are gone before pick 7, Bucs should trade down even if Barkley is available. Plenty of RBs in this draft and Bucs need as many picks as they can get. Bucs could literaly get Landry, Davenport and Guice with a trade down or a DE, RB and CB.

@RRSRQ has a very good point. Indy has the same immediate draft needs as the Bucs, and wouldn’t likely trade with us reasonably, much less for only a 4th rounder plus/minus a player. However, they are moving to standard 4-3 defense, and do need LB help, and we could unload LVD and his bloated contract to Indy possibly.
SA-QUON isn’t falling to #7 for all those fools who want to console themselves to sit at #7, maybe Nelson or Chubb does, but NOT Barkley.
Remember folks, what NO ONE is talking about, that Elway in DEN likes Nelson sure, if not Mayfield possibly, but what NO ONE is talking about, is that Elway played all those years with Terrell Davis and realizes that SA-QUON, SA-QUON would create a huge impact in that same vein for Keenum and the offense, with DEF there intact! Spin that around at #5!!
Also the publicity monster in WAS that takes draft shots all the time at #13, and even the Dolphins at #11, would both jump the Bucs at #7 for possibility of Barkley at #6.
Mull it all over. AND Jason just has to GO GET Barkley.

I don’t care if winning the last game causes us to miss out on a future HoFer. I will never root for the Bucs to lose a home game, especially when it’s against the Aints and the stadium is half full of their rude, bandwagoner fans.
Bucs fans whine about the losing culture all the time yet you have fans on this website that complain about winning. What about Fitzpatrick winning his two games? We were out of the playoff race at that point (not mathematically but we were realistically out). Those games hurt us just as much if not more so. Seeing Sean Payton end the season with that look on his face made winning that last game worth it alone.

Joe, I understand your point about smokescreens being sent by GMs in March, duly noted. But the point is that they are comfortable sitting at 6 with whomever they have on their board. They, like us need an edge rusher, a stud RB and an interior lineman. A trade back on slot with a team with the exact same needs doesn’t make sense. They risk getting their second choice. Why do that for a 4th rounder? Unless they are blown away by a team eyeing an available QB at 6 they take Chubb. Or Nelson.

The jets won ONE more game than the colts, had to cough up three 2nd rounders to get the pick they would have had with one less win. Every slot is huge on draft day. As far as trading to move up I say no way. The draft is an unpredictable fun event. Still more time to go, and more trades to be made. Alot of qbs this year. I wouldnt be surprised if 5 qbs go in the top 6 after its all said and done. Never know.

Considering that Beckwith was at one point one of the better Linebackers on our team last year that would be a very unwise move. It is likely that 3 QBs go yes but Cleveland is probably trading out of the 4th selection to a team that wants Darnold or Mayfield. If you stay you’re still getting a blue chip player at the 7th pick. Trading down makes more sense though I don’t think we’ll have any trade partners unless Arizona wants to pull the rug out from under Buffalo and take a QB before them.
We’re probably going to stay at 7 and grab BPA and then in the second round we’ll go either D-line or RB, whichever position hasn’t been filled yet. But trading a promising player for one spot just doesn’t seem like a great move at all to me.

I must be math challenged. But IF 4 QB’s go before our pick then we do not need to trade up to assure ourselves of either Barkley, Chubb, or Nelson. That’s three players for two selections before us! And wouldn’t that be funny for all those whiny losers who are still angry #3 and the guys dared to WIN a football game.
If we get one of those three our draft position will have been fine!!!
Highest probability is that three QB’s go leaving us out in the cold if the three other teams want either Chubb, Barkley or Nelson. According to Walter Football they do and we get stuck with a safety at 7th.
That would not make me happy…not a safety and not OSU’s CB…NO back seven until we fix the front. If only three QB’s are selected…and IF one of our three guys fill the remaining spots…our position should be valuable for a team looking for that 4th QB and we could end up with decent trade down results.
If we do not get one of our top three I do not want to pick but rather move down…the one exception being if the Buc’s braintrust thought Vita Vea was worth it. Dude has a ton of upside.

After watching the playoffs this year a common theme was apparent. Most of the playoff teams had a really good running back corps. LA Rams had Gurley, the Jaguars had Founette, the Dallas Cowboys didn’t make the playoffs but if Elliot played the whole year they would have made them. The Saints had two good RB Kamara, Ingram, Falcons have Freeman, Coleman, Philly had 3 good RB Blount Ajayi, Clement. What I’m trying to say is if we get a chance to get a game changing RB like Barkley we should run to the podium to make the pick. I’ve been a season ticket holder for 25 years I’ve never seen our offense dominate like other teams have in the past. Getting a player like Barkley would immediately make Winston a better QB. Other teams would have to honor the run, making our play action passing game, which Winston excels at much more effective. Goff is a perfect example of how a dominate RB can make a QB look much better. Even Bortles looked good with Fournette there. I’ll be excited if we get any of the big three Nelson, Chubb, Barkley. If Barkley is the only one left to pick i wouldn’t hesitate one second to make the pick. I want a dominate offense. Just my opinion.

The Bucs have waaaaaaaaay too many holes to give up assets to move up one slot.
There is no savior in this draft.
The Bucs need multiple players to fix this team.
You never do that type of deal until that pick is literally on the clock and you see what’s there.
EVERY year they say 4 or 5 QB’s might go top ten. And then only 2 or 3 do AT MOST.
The Bucs will be just fine at #7 and if anything, need to trade back to acquire more assets.
The Bucs are paper thin depth wise at most position groups. You fix that by accumulating assets, not consolidating them.

Either 4 QBs go top 6; or we are a prime trade down candidate at 7 with either the:
11 – Dolphins
12 – Bills
13 – Redskins
15 – Cardinals
All 4 could be in the QB market in this draft. The Bills definitely are taking QB. Cardinals need one really bad as well.
It doesn’t matter that teams picking 8-10 don’t need QBs. All that matters would be the first 6 teams having no desire to move down because the Giants/Browns/Colts/Broncos are set on guys they want in those slots. IF they are open to moving down then that means 4 QBs are going before we pick; and we get one of the 3 studs we want.
It’s a win win. But if 3 QBs go / the 3 studs go – I think we have 4 teams we could move back with and get a good bidding war going. THe situation would be that they couldn’t make any trade up at this point even though they’ve been trying – and we could probably get a really good haul in that scenario. Like another 2 and another 3 this year kind of haul. Then we can address a lot of needs.
Would still be in the top 15-16 where we will get elite talent. Davenport/James/Vea/Payne/Bryan/Denzel Ward – all elite defensive talents we could use that would likely be available 11-15 especially considering the LBs that will go / WRs that may go

John Dorsey has said that he will listen to any offers for the 1st and 4th pick. I really believe that Cleveland will trade the 1st or 4th pick or both picks. If a QB needed team really are locked in on a QB. It would make more sense for them to trade up with Cleveland or the Giants. There’s also the possibility that Cleveland don’t trade the 4th pick and the Giants don’t trade the 2nd pick. And they both draft Barkley and Chubb. Anything can happen it’s all speculation. Me personally I don’t see any prospect in this draft worth trading up for.

Bucs are at a disadvantage for trading up in the draft because the rookie QB class isn’t particularly strong plus it is deep. Can you tell me there is a huge difference in talent and potential between Josh Allen, Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, and Baker Mayfield? Other teams above the Bucs know that we aren’t looking at a QB this year and instead are looking at the bluechips at other positions i.e. Chubb, Barkley, Nelson, and Fitzpatrick.
1. Browns. Acquired QB in offseason. Still with the Jets now at No. 3 they will most likely get thier QB of the future here. Can get a bluechip here and wait until 4 however.
2. Giants. They can go either way here. Stick with Manning and get a bluechip (Barkley) or get a QB for the future.
3. Jets. Acquired T. Bridgewater in offseason. Getting a QB here if I had a thousand dollars I’d bet $950 yet never rule out a bluechip. Maybe they traded up for the certainity of Barkley or Chubb?
4. Browns. Either a QB or bluechip. Whatever the opposite of their first pick.
5. Broncos. Acquired a QB in offseason with Keenum. More likely to get a bluechip this draft class though don’t rule out a QB

And that leaves the Bucs at 7. I’m nervous at the mindset that everyone has all these QB’s going so high. I can see it happening but it’s only a 60/40 chance that 3 QB’s go in the top 6. A wildcard would be the Bills trading into the top 6 for a QB which would all but ensure a bluechip falls to the Bucs but remember the Bills acquired AJ McCarron this offseason. I can see them waiting until next season for the QB class because like I said I’m not particularly impressed with this years QB’s in the draft.
Trading back with the Bucs would hurt the Colts from their perspective imo as they know the Bucs aren’t getting a QB and neither are the Colts. It makes sense to trade back with the Jets because you know the Jets would only trade up for a QB therefore leaving a player like Chubb, Barkley, Nelson, or Fitzpatrick available at 6. 2-3 of those players will be gone the first 5 picks most likely so why hurt yourself and trade back with the Bucs? It wouldn’t suprise me if Elway was willing to trade back from 5 to 7 at a cheaper cost (say a 4th this year and a 3rd or 4th next year) if Elway plans on getting a QB than it would cost to move up to 6 and trade with the Colts.
All I’m saying Buc fans is don’t be so certain that 3 QB’s go within the first 5 picks. 2 for certain with the Jets and Browns but a case can be made the Giants and Broncos don’t (Browns other pick won’t be used on a QB)

High probability we either get one of the big 3 or a nice trade down offer at #7.
If the worst happens (Chubb, Nelson and Barkley are all off the board and no trade down offers come) – Do NOT take Minkah at 7! Derwin James, Denzel Ward or Vita Vea should be the pick in that very undesirable (and unlikely) situation. All 3 of those guys will be impact players in the NFL at positions of relative need on Defense.
The only way we shouldn’t be picking defense in Rd 1 is if Nelson or Barkley is available at #7.

Better to trade down day with the bills , grab the 12th and 21st and a extra 2nd round pick , take Davenport and keys in first , second take best RB and safety availed and rest of draft get depth

You can’t ridicule ANY offer no matter how ridiculous it may sound on paper because if you watch enough NFL Network you know that NFL history is littered with weird “what were they thinking” deals. Rick Mirer got traded for a first round pick. Hell, the Worst GM in Bucs History somehow stuck up Gun-Controlled Chicago for a 2nd round pick for GAINES ADAMS! Throw out something ridiculous. Maybe you catch some GM on a bad day.
You know Trump offered the Post family HALF of their asking price for Mar-A-Lago when it went up for sale? Half. That was because 3 previous buyers had financing fall through. When a fourth fell through he lowered his price even further and GOT it.

Oh man, if Indy is getting calls about #6 and one of them is from the Bucs, it’s worth it to take the Bucs’ call on that because they’d get to trade that pick TWICE! Once to the Bucs and then to whomever the highest bidder is/was.
Indy is HOPING the Bucs want #6 the way I’m hoping Arizona listens to Cowherd about trading all of their picks to get #7 and draft a QB.

I agree with what you’re saying however I just don’t know how high up the Bills are willing to trade. The Bears and 49ers and Raiders aren’t in the QB market either and they are drafting after the Bucs. What’s to stop a trade between one of those teams and the Bills if say a QB or 2 are still on the board at 7?
Also the Giants taking a QB isn’t 100% nor is the Browns trading out of thier 4th pick.

If Buffalo make that trade, they make it during the draft, after the Jets pick. But there’s a strong possibility that the Bill trade up to #2 before the draft.

At least in those scenarios either Mayfield or Allen are sitting there available when we pick at 7.
Dolphins/Redskins/Cardinals/Ravens/Chargers all in play at that point imo. All have had rumours of potentially drafting a QB and it only takes 1-2 of them wanting a guy to make that move.
Just because the pick at 8 doesn’t need a QB it doesn’t stop the deal. The realistic phone call is “Hey – we’re shopping our pick and have multiple teams interested in grabbing Baker (or Allen). If you want him make us the best offer you can”
It’s not like those teams would then say “F*ck off Bucs we know that Chicago doesn’t need a QB and we can make a deal with them for less”
The Bucs would then say “Ok dumbass you just lost he QB you want because we’re making a trade with another team then”

Why is the world so sure the Colts won’t draft a quarterback? When exactly was the last time Andrew Luck the a pass on the NFL, and I’m not so sure that if he does come back, that he is anything resembling the player he once was. The Colts got dealt with by the football gods for the suck for luck while they were blessed enough to have Manning on the roster. Colts have a new head coach, don’t count it a new QB and the possibility of Luck being traded at some point.

I don’t see any team trading up for Baker Mayfield. I believe he’s the odd QB out. Josh Allen is a IFFY, Boom or Bust , a team might trade up for him.

The most likely trade partner would be the Bills after they have already shown interest in moving up for a QB. They have already swapped picks from #22 to #12 with Cincy. Now we trade back 5 spots and gain more picks and grab Vea or Davenport with #12

If the QB run takes place it means either Fitz or Ward is still there. Personally I don’t like Minkah Fitzpatrick as the pick since he violates the ‘inappropriate name for a position’ rule, and in my 30-years of watching football I’ve never seen a guy who violates that rule turn out to be any good. Yes, it’s a dumb rule that shouldn’t make any difference, but by golly (edited in hopes of not getting moderated) is there a really strong track record. Last year Taco Charlton was the guy and he basically had a completely wasted season.
Denzel Ward however… that is a fantastic name for corner – and more importantly he meets the criteria of having something special about him, which is required to draft a DB over a defensive lineman in the top 10. The guy has exceptional speed and he’s a legit 5′ 10″ 190lb, that’s plenty of size for the position. He also has a great vertical jump and excelled at the broadjump – which means explosion. To me, this is the pick.
The other possibility is Davenport. He has very good size for a 4-3 edge guy, has fantastic speed and again was very good at the broadjump. The issue is he’s a project player and this would seem too high to pick him. Based off the little I know of him, looking at the stats, the school he went to and his combine, he reminds me quite a bit of JPP and if the Bucs didn’t need instant production out of this pick (which they get with Ward) then this would be my longterm pick.

Conte: When Peyton Manning was kicked to the curb he was making over 28 million a year when the cap was much lower, and he was going to be 36 years in 2012. The Colts had the number 1 draft pick in 2012 and the highest rated QB (since Peyton Manning no less!) in a generation was coming up.
It would be beyond foolish to cut ties with 29 year old Andrew Luck when he is only earning 24 million a year with a higher cap, there aren’t any great QB prospects in this years draft, and the Colts have holes they need to fill besides QB including guard and DE. We are talking “Bucs letting Doug Williams go” levels of incompetence for a move like that.

The draft is enough of a crapshoot; making any move up would have to be motivated by a hard-to-imagine amount of preference for a particular player, and thus Licht putting his neck out further than it already is.
