Bucs, Ryan Jensen Come To Terms

March 16th, 2018

Signed.

Ryan Jensen is your new Bucs offensive lineman.

That’s the word from Jenna Laine of ESPN. Laine reports that the Bucs and Jensen have come to terms.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network claims 27-year-old Jensen, formerly of the Ravens, inked a four-year, $42 million deal with $22 million guaranteed.

The question Joe has, are the Bucs moving Jensen to center and taking a very pubic admission that Ali Marpet at center was a con and a waste of a season, or is Jensen a guard?

Curious minds want to know.

  1. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Joe, Regardless of your perceived wasted time with Marpet at Center.

Can you honestly say that he wasn’t better at Guard?

  2. Bird Says:

    This guy is mean

Sweezy without the bad back fusion. Guys hate playing against him cause he never stops hitting you.

  3. Buccaneer scotty Says:

    Oh yeah thank you Jesus!

  4. Jd Says:

That lessens the pain a bit!

Can’t wait to see what he can bring to our o-line

  5. AlteredEgo Says:

I don’t think it is a reflection on Marpet’s play/potential at center….it is simply the smartest thing to do…Marpet is an excellent young guard…this FA period it was easier the find a young FA center than guard that fits the Buc going into this season

  6. tmaxcon Says:

Well I’ll be damned the clowns actually closed a deal for a decent player… still tons of work needed on that roster and the cancer93 needs to be eradicated but Jensen is a piece.

  7. darin Says:

Jensen at center is what I’m seeing. Another failed experiment by these boneheads. Great signing IF he is playing center, moving Marpet back. A true center is what theyve needed. Since they refuse to find anyone who can sniff a qb, I guess theyre planning on running the ball and playing keep away. Better idea than not. Now lets hope sittin back smitty can scrap together a 4 man rush somehow with the mush licht slaps on his plate

  8. Bnomo Says:

    Hopefully, not a bust.

    An improvement? Time will tell.

Use as guard. Get Miami’s center (Poncey?)

    Get a good running back.

    Go Bucs…..

  9. Buc4life Says:

The bucs signed the best interior lineman on the market? Fite everyone! No one wants to play here because Jameis licked his fingers. Tear everything down rebuild.

  10. DanBucsFan Says:

BOOM ! Now get the Honey Badger , please Mr. Licht.

  11. Joe Says:

Can you honestly say that he wasn’t better at Guard?

Can tell you a high-ranking Bucs official off the record told Joe before last year’s draft Marpet was overrated as a guard.

So ***if*** Jensen is a center, that is a stunning admission that all the team’s research and everything they thought about Marpet was wrong.

  12. JayBucBoi Says:

So that means we waste another season, and now money, because of ego?? Nah, forget that! Do what’s right for the team and for winning games.

  13. Todd Says:

    Finally a good signing

  14. SteveK Says:

    Joe,

It would be foolish to not move Marpet back to OG because of pride. Last year is done, we were 5-11. Our Marpet back at Guard, where he excels, and let him mail people.

I understand your point of a wasted year of development for Marpet, but I’d rather it just be one year vs. letting him exceed at OG!

Having two guys that can handle the center duty is a far cry from the days of Garret Gilkey!

    Let’s go Bucs!

It’s ok to try something and be wrong. It’s less ok to hold onto something lesser because of pride. Marpet is OG! Cut Sweezy!

  15. lambchop Says:

Marpet moving to C was strictly a personnel issue. He’s going back to his natural position. No need to experiment anymore. They each are solid at their respective positions. It would be foolish to experiment now when it’s clear Marpet had growing pains at C. It’s not that he can’t be a solid C some day, but now it’s not necessary.

  16. tino Says:

Hey Joe, I thought the Bucs were allergic to spending money in FA? You probably want to go edit some prior posts now, hmm?

  17. SteveK Says:

Joe, the Buccaneers were wrong to move Marpet to C. He’s adequate there, but much better st OG!

Hobart Hammer back to G! Cut Sweezy!

  18. JayBucBoi Says:

Now Curry … which unfortunately would mean that’s it for Ayers. Can’t justify paying him and Curry with the results Ayers has put out these lately, even though we would still need him!

  19. KingBuc17 Says:

This is the best news of the FA period. I don’t think Marpet at center was a waste but now we can put the best 5 OL on the field!!

  20. DanBucsFan Says:

    @Darin…

Come on bud, why must u add a “hater” comment. Can we all for once just rejoice and be happy about a move? It was a good signing and last year is over bro, who cares about past mistakes, lets live for the future. GO BUCS FIRE THOE CANNONS

  21. Bird Says:

Cut ayers or gholston and get the badger. Buckner has watched enough film on both along with practices to know which guy he would rather have.

Gholston is younger but can’t sniff a qb’ s jock.

  22. SteveK Says:

The had eight million guaranteed reasons (Sweezy) to move Marpet from G to C!

When something doesn’t work, you go back to the best possible situation. Holding on because of pride, and settling for less, is foolish at best. I get your pint, but come on bro, Marpet at G is like two FAs for the price of one.

Cut Sweezy! Draft Nelson! Bully our way to the division crown!

  23. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

All I know is that he looked like an ascending Right Guard to me, and being a long time listener of the Ira Kaufman podcast, I know the sage of Tampa Bay agrees.

He had a higher degree of success RG than at Center.

And the guy we just signed to a 4 year 42 million dollar deal, just had the best season of his career starting 16 games at Center. Bring him in to play guard would be more perplexing to me than moving Ali back to his previous position.

  24. Bird Says:

Get Lamar Houston. He would come cheap.

  25. BucEmUp Says:

There is no shame in moving marpet back to guard. Maybe they felt he was the best center last season. Maybe they still see him as being developed into a guard but don’t want to wait and see. Who cares at least they signed someone.

Problem still remains that every time the Bucs don’t score the opposing team is almost guaranteed to.score every time.

I can’t wait for.Smitty to crap all over himself and hopefully get fired

  26. Chrisco4Bucs Says:

Hope you negative nancies are happy now, this is a great signing

  27. SteveK Says:

    Joe,

The suit who said “Marpet is overrated at G” was wrong. Just watch! Get Ali in space and let him get the Vulcan death grip on ppl and maul them!

Hobart Hammer at G is awesome.

I hear Jensen is a mean SOB! He will fit right in!

Nice guys finish last (in the division #93)

  28. Not there yet Says:

Marpet moving to center was not a waste because he proved he can do it. Injuries happen and if needed he can move to center or guard at any time it’s needed this season. There is no need to admit to it being a success or a failure. The 2017 season was a complete failure and who going to say it was because of marpet moving to center?

Sweezy needs to step up and earn his paycheck because it appears he’s now the weak link

  29. USFBUC Says:

I know some don’t put much in PFF but they did rate Marpet as the 7th best Center last season which is a few spots higher than Jensen. Love the signing and it doesn’t really matter who plays where. The good news is that we actually addressed a position of need and we now have excellent depth at C regardless of who starts there.

  30. lambchop Says:

Overrated at guard by a bucs official? They’re not exactly the best talent or player evaluators in my opinion. So I’ll take muy chances with his play at G over an opinion.

  31. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

SteveK with a rather salient point.

It could be argued that the major impetus for moving Marpet to Center in the first place was just because Licht wanted to validate the Sweezy deal.

How about this Joe, regardless of whatever that anonymous Bucs official had to say off the record, can we at least agree that Marpet was a whole lot better at Right Guard than Sweezy?

  32. SteveK Says:

    Chrisco4bucs,

I’m pumped we got a solid lineman and move the Hobart Hammer back to guard.

The Buccaneers are still the second sh!ttiest team in the NFL over the last decade, thanks Cleveland!

No where to go but up!

  33. Ja'Crispy Says:

Joe, if Marpet was drafted to be a center then why didn’t he start at center his rookie year. He was a center last year best they didn’t have a good center. He is a better guard then he is a center.

  34. SteveK Says:

Again, to the suit that said Marpet is overrated at G, let the JBF posters share their knowledge and opinion!

Marpet is a mauler and the Hobart Hammer! Let big Ali mail ppl. Free him up to destroy fools!

  35. DanBucsFan Says:

Boy oh boy if we draft Nelson I will take that Oline into battle any day.

  36. DB55 Says:

Still need a RT and which guard position is Marpet moving to? Is he next to Dotson or Smith?

  37. DB55 Says:

Will Hernandez and Rashad Penny will work too. I like Jones from USC too he reminds me of CJ2k

  38. SteveK Says:

Let’s hope Nelson falls to 7 and we can scoop up the road grader! We will own the division and play keep away!

  39. Kalind Says:

I don’t see why the two can’t coexist. Marpet was ok at Center, but you find an upgrade you take it. Upgraded 2 positions. Good for us

  40. SteveK Says:

    DB55,

I’d put Ali at RG, roll with dotson one more year and draft Nelson to play Lg. Cut Sweezy!

Maybe draft a RT in the mid rounds?

  41. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Yes!!

    Again – Great call L.C.!!

  42. SteveK Says:

    Db55,

Good call on Hernandez at OG. He is huge.

I hope we draft 2 RBs and just pound the effing rock.

  43. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Oh and for those that haven’t put it together. Signing Jensen to that large of a contract guarantees JR Sweezy’s departure.

    Good riddance.

  44. SteveK Says:

    Joe,

Not a “stunning” admission at all this team has sucked for the last decade. No surprise they were wrong about Marpet to C. They were just spilling the company line.

  45. Guzziep Says:

Can we please cut Sweeny and his 6 million contract, bye Felicia

  46. DB55 Says:

And we still overpaid. Like historically overpaid. Is this guy a pro-bowler. No. He a one-year starter and gets 22 mil garunteed. Hmm ok no need to rain on the parade I guess.

  47. Rod Munch Says:

Well considering how dumb the Bucs were for moving Marpet, a near all-pro level guard to center, I guess we can expect them to double down on their mistake and make Jensen a guard and keep Marpet at center.

Anywho if they move Marpet back, that is obviously the smart thing to do, and no, it’s not a wasted year since it means Marpet is now cross trained for 2 positions, which is never a bad thing. Now wasting an entire year to cross train a guy is dumb, you should do that in say preseason, but hey, it’s done.

Lets just hope that Dirk and gang do the right thing.

  48. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Sign
    -Vinny Curry
    -Bennie Logan
    -E.J. Gaines

    And we good!

  49. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Listen to everyone….Guard…..Center….No, Guard…..No, Center….

Sounds to me we finally have some options….at least Marpet has some experience at C going forward….that can’t hurt.

  50. Scott Legere Says:

If we get Nelson we can Pound The Rock keep our quarterback upright and our pass offense will be explosive!

  51. adam from ny Says:

if he goes bust, we have our own “red headed step child”…if he
rock & rolls at center, he will be our “ginger snapping fire crotch”…

welcome to tampa good sir…bring the fire, we already got the heat !

  52. OneBucPerson Says:

Joe he’s clearly going to be our new starting Center, Sweezy’s bad back makes him a liability and Ali fumbled far too many snaps last year. It’s time to move him back to his natural position of Guard.

  53. T in Orlando Says:

    Joe,

Why is it so bad if the Licht and Koetter “admit” that moving Marpet to Center was a mistake? They come out and say, we did what we thought was best for the team last year based on the available personnel in moving Ali to Center, and are doing it again this year by moving him back to Guard.

I just don’t see why this is such a bad thing.

  54. Rod Munch Says:

DB55 – $7m a year isn’t pro-bowler money, the guy from Carolina got $13m as a guard, that is now what pro-bowl money is. This is just a nice signing, a guy that is an upgrade at center and who now lets Marpet move back to guard where he should play at an all-pro level.

  55. Defense Rules Says:

PLEASE don’t screw this up Bucs. Jensen is a great signing because he has experience at C, RG & LG … great flexibility on the interior OLine. Marpet is a much better RG than he is a C. Moving Ali back to RG gives us the option now to release Sweezy & bring on EITHER a C or LG (via FA or draft) to flesh out our OLine. Still need much better depth than we now have, but re-signing Pamphile & E. Smith for reasonable $$$ could take care of that in a hurry.

  56. ElioT Says:

    Thank you baby Jesus!

Draft Nelson, Michel just maul defenses.

  57. JimmyJack Says:

So happy they finally made a move.!! Almost 80 hours on hunger strike is something I hope to never relive.

Do they pass on Nelson now if he becomes avialable?

And it’s very concerning to me that the team just keeps adding pieces to the offense. It’s been 5 offseason of building up one side of the ball with no results. While I will be hopeful they can finally get on the scoreboard and give us some leads I will not be confident til it shows up on Sundays.

Here, here……to another offseason of unfounded hope!!

  58. cmurda Says:

No matter where Jensen goes, Marpet was a beast wherever he played. A couple of stumbles but Marpet again was our best O lineman. Disagree with you there Joe

  59. matt johnson Says:

After a few years of reading posts by buc “fans” on this sight, i am now convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that Tim Brown was absolutely 100 percent correct.

  60. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I like this signing, and only wish that Sweezy would return to his old, evil self.
He sure was good in Seattle.
My Son and I were hopeful about Carl Nix too
Of course, things did not work out for him, but we had the chance to meet him, when we cleaned the roof of his house, because he was selling it, and going back home.

Now, Marpet can return back to Guard, and Jensen makes our line better!

  61. Bird Says:

Honey badger will set the safety market as none really taken.

There are some better “than what we got “strong safeties out there and would keep us from drafting one cause we have so many holes

  62. matt johnson Says:

The most stupid, ill-informed contributors i have ever heard or witnessed…

  63. LUVMYBUCS Says:

This one goes out to U Mr. Sweezy

1975 version: Roy Rogers – Happy Trails
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5U0oFJehl_k

  64. Kazz Says:

    Goodbye Sweazy.

  65. kgh4life Says:

Jensen is a true center. In the best interest of the team, the Bucs have to move Marpet back to right guard where he was playing at a high level, next move Sweezy to left guard and have him compete for the job. At this point Sweezy is just not reliable.

  66. James G Losinger Says:

    DanBucsFan Says:
    March 16th, 2018 at 9:27 pm
Boy oh boy if we draft Nelson I will take that Oline into battle any day.
    ________________________________________________________

That would be way cool. If by some miracle he falls to 7th the Bucs draft announcer better be yelling his name even before he steps on stage.

  67. El_Buc941 Says:

Joe my opinion is they are moving Ali to guard where he is dominant at,putting Jensen at center and than drafting another OLinemen to fix the offensive line and that should help improve the running game by quite a bit wether it be Barkley,Guice, or Barber pounding the rock.if we can settle the Offensive Line then the running back position should fall in place and MAYBE,JUST MAYBE our first round draft pick can be used defensively.Chubbs or Fitzpatrick would be a Uuuuuge upgrade.

  68. Rod Munch Says:

Again… every single guard drafted in the top 10 since 2000 was a bust for the team that drafted him.

There’s only been 3, and all 3 were busts.

Drafting a guard in the top 10 is a very bad value since you can get really good guards in the 2nd and 3rd all day long. If the Bucs get Nelson then so be it, but he’s going to have to break that trend of top 10 guards and he’s going to have to be a pro-bowler from day 1 to be worth that pick.

Also yes, I get it, he’s special, he’s great, blah blah blah. So was every other top 10 guard taken.

  69. lambchop Says:

BR has Marpet ranked 10th at center and Jensen at 8 based on last season. Marpet also had a shortened season. So, from a finance point of view, Jensen should be C. Has he played G before? We need to shore up the RG position so it makes sense to put Marpet back at G. With Pamphile at LG, this only means that Sweezy is going to get released.

  70. AtlBucs Says:

I think Sweezy will bounce back this year. After all, he was out for a whole year. Can we really expect him to come back and dominate after being out a year? If he has a good year this line will be awesome. Even muscle hamster could run behind that line.

  71. kenny Says:

now sign de curry, cb gaines or breeland and the badger at safety

  72. El_Buc941 Says:

Also Joe don’t forget….the longer into free agency we go the more leverage GMs have to work on cheaper contracts I.E. if we get the honey badger HE WILL SIGN FOR LESS THAN WHAT HE ORIGINALLY TURNED DOWN IN ARIZONA.

  73. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

Licht is heeding the words I’ve been repeating for months…

FIX THE TRENCHES, FIX THE BUCS!!

We still need 1 more interior offensive lineman and about 4 DEs to really build depth and competitions

  74. godzilla13 Says:

Ryan Jensen is a great signing. He is young (26) and can play the run and pass protect as well. Move Marpet to guard and draft Nelson or Herenandez. Which means we need one more FA signing..a CB. If Licht can pull this off all will be right in One Buc Town.

  75. Rod Munch Says:

If the Bucs do release Sweezy they should consider bringing back Pamphile since he can play everywhere and is good depth. Then you can draft a guy and be set knowing Pamphile could start if the rookie is terrible. I’m not anti-Sweezy, I might keep him and let him compete, but I’d rather find a spot for Pamphile since he can play all positions.

  76. @Broy3434 Says:

Get the badger out of your head guys

  77. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    @RodMunch

You are wrong about Nelson dude. Universally rated higher than Zac Martin. He would be a tremendous draft pick.

  78. Maze Says:

    He’s a center Joe

  79. Lamarcus Says:

Jensen is left guard. Book it

  80. Saskbuco Says:

    1. Thank you Glazers and Jason Licht for pulling this off, and calming the masses down to a degree
    2. This move is almost like 2 FA pick ups, with moving Ali back to G ( his best spot and damn good guard)
    3. Anyone that says Jensen has only had one good year, and didn’t even play his 1st season and blah blah, that’s a good thing, less wear and tear and maybe he even get better, pay for what’s to come not what’s been done
    4. It’s an attitude the line needs, Sweezy was supposed to be that and he hasn’t and now probably wont. If he is cut, his salary this season is 6.5+625,000 for a 7.125m Cap hit, take Gholston 6.5 and get it reduced or cut him (we have run stuffers to replace him now) and that’s more than Jensen Cap hit, thats 13.624m
    5. Any top FA at their respected position will almost always be the new top paid player at their position, due to increase in cap space every year. Last year was Linder from the Jags, and Richburg is making 9.5 and coming off a concussion
    6. Love the move, I’m eating crow on this one, and I wrote down at my desk last night 5 yrs 47.5m and 22.5 G money, wasn’t too far off

  81. JimmyJack Says:

Rod Munch I’m with ya. I wouldn’t mind letting Sweezy compete. Though they may have to release him for financial reasons.

Good thing for us is there is depth at the guard position in the draft so we have many options.

I still think they have to get Nelson of both Chubb and Barkley are gone. I wanted Chub first and Nelson second….but with this signing I gotta have Barkley sencond based on need.

  82. denjoe Says:

    Finally a good move!

  83. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Rod I agree…you can’t let go of guys like Pamphile..versatile…Sweezy? Meh…send him packing..he’ll get hurt again in the off-season cutting his grass…

  84. SCBucsFan Says:

Me, I’m just glad we signed a starter and my visions of us spending the least amount in the league and tanking get pushed to the back of my mind. Positive vibes.

  85. I Bleed Pewter and Red Says:

I would like to welcome Jensen to the team. As far as position that will all be figured out in the off season. All said and done he’s got to make the final cut. Good luck Ryan!

  86. JimmyJack Says:

Sasko……They certainly calmed me down. I can finally east again!! Over the past few days I have been having nervous breakdown symptoms such as speratic breathing, increased heart rate, violent outbursts, and even an occasional dellisional vision.

This news very well could have saved my life.

  87. JimmyJack Says:

Life….In my opinion Sweezy was better then Phampile last year. That’s a tough debate between the two. Who has more potential?

  88. DanBucsFan Says:

    @Rod Munch

My good man, you are actually one of the people I loook at on here as a very knowledge football fan, I also respect your opinion and usually agree with you. You also are not the only poster I have seen that has stated the fact about drafting a guard in the top 10. I know it is by no means a sexy pick and I believe your a actual fan of the Bucs, others I feel are no longer deep down even fans anymore as they literally criticize every move, and most people who comment if it goes against their belief. But with that being said, I AGREE with you about no guards have worked that high, but this kid has me convinced that he will anchor a line as a perennial all pro for years to come. So with so much uncertainty in the draft I view him as the surest thing this year. Of coarse I could be wrong, but if I am right, it would indeed be scary. You of all people understand everything that it benefits to have a dominant Oline. That is one thing that will never change in the Nfl, no matter what style offense you run, dominant line equals playoff contention.

  89. DanBucsFan Says:

At this point with very few impact defenders available or willing to go after. I wouldn’t mind keeping Sweezy for depth, we could do far worse. Also like the idea of Phamphile as a swiss army knife back up. But Im not sold on Phamphile as a starter at this point.

  90. Bucsfan1988 Says:

THANK YOU for Jensen! Now I’m stoked!! We need 2 more free agents. They would be Vinny Curry and EJ Gaines to complete roster headed into the draft.

Would like to see trade down – 1st round & pick up extra 2nd rounder
    For 1st round- Davenport /DE
    2nd round – Hernandez / LG
    2nd round – Guice / RB
    3rd round – Best corner
4th round – Shaquem Griffin!!! – Strong safety!!
    5th round – another DE
    6th round – another RB
    6th round – another OL
    7th round – another CB

  91. JimmyJack Says:

Well I have no idea who the other guards drafted top ten were but how many of them were taken or being consider to be a top five guy?

How many of them were considered the safest prospect in the draft or were given such high grades by the pundits?

I’m just asking I don’t know. But the comparison could not be the best in the world. Most of 5he analysts sound pretty dang confident that Nelson is a sure fire difference maker. And yeah, I’m well aware these guys miss a ton on their evaluations. But they also dont sound extremely confident very often.

The two guys that I’ve heard the most confidence about have been Nelson and Barkley……Only time will tell.

  92. Batman Wood Says:

It’s already been reported that Jensen will play C and Marpet moves back to RG.

  93. DB55 Says:

    Rod

According to nfl dot com the buc made Jensen the highest paid center (I think in the history of the nfl). I’d post the link but it will just get blocked. It’s on the nfl website though.

  94. Jeremy Says:

2018 – just going to have to outscore everyone because we won’t be stopping anyone

  95. JimmyJack Says:

1988…..I think there’s a very good chance that 4 QBs get drafted ahead of us. Not sure we will be in the trade market which may be a better situation if Chubb or Barkley drops to us.

This draft will be a lot of fun with so many QBs being seen as possible franchise guys. The Bucs seem to be sitting at the turning point spot. Either all the QBs will be gone leaving top 5 talent for us or Licht is beating off the trade offers which should give us better then just a extra #2.

  96. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Rod Munch. Just want to let you know that you make an absolutely horrible case for you credibility when you suggest we not cut Sweezy immediately.

The guy is due 6.5 million with a 7 million cap hit if we keep him. And he is NOT even medically cleared to play right now.

No offense, but based on your sentiment regarding Sweezy, only turns your negative opinion of drafting Nelson into a ringing endorsement.

  97. DanBucsFan Says:

Off subject but, im not into the Curry fan section. He is a good player but Imo and if you look at career stats id keep Ayers over Curry. He is not a beast pass rusher by no means, and we have plenty of De’s who are solid but not high sack guys. Do we need a pass rusher , of coarse we do, but i dont think Curry would be the guy to address that. Lets hope Spence stays healthy all year and blossoms, also got a hunch our whole Dline unit will step up their games this year and be more productive in the sack category.

  98. BucFanFromOhio Says:

Finally Licht made a decent move! Now go get Curry and Gaines to stop the sky from falling!

  99. Oneilbucs Says:

    I like the move.

  100. DB55 Says:

We can draft Mike McGlinchey OT from Norte Dame and put him at RT.

  101. Dave Says:

What a relief! IF we can land the Honey Badger as well… nearly all will be forgiven between a restless (depressed) fan base and Jason Licht.

  102. BrianBucs Says:

Jensen played guard in 2015 and 2016. Last year was his first year at center, like Marpet

  103. Lord Corn Says:

    Thanks for the love LUV!

Very happy with this signing 🙂

  104. Oneilbucs Says:

    I like the move.
    Let’s

  105. SOEbuc Says:

    NELSON/JENSEN/MARPET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FIXING THE TRENCHES WITH YOUNG BOSSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  106. Bucsfan1988 Says:

JimmyJack, yeah I was thinking that someone is gonna make a trade with us for that 4th QB…Either Arizona, Miami, or Buffalo…

If not, no biggie…Take either Chubb or Nelson and I’m cool with that….No more DB’s at high 1st round as we always screw that up (Mark Barron / VHIII)
If we don’t snag DE first then we need to move back up with our 2nd into the 1st round again…Would like to see us grab Davenportif possible. He’s an awesome athlete..Great skills but just raw. Buckner will teach him!!…If we stay 2nd round then grab GUICE…
Regardless though, WE MUST MUST MUST DRAFT SHAQUEM GRIFFIN!!!! Keep that boy in Florida! Seahawks will try to get him, BUT JUST SAY NO, lol!!!

  107. MadMax Says:

Great news!!! Welcome aboard Mr. Jensen!

  108. JimmyJack Says:

Dan I hear ya with that. My only concern is keeping Ayers on the field too much. I would not mind seeing them bring in some more rotational ends.

While you may not increase the overall talent of who is on the field keeping guys fresh was something we didn’t get last year. Give me a fresh Ayers in the fourth quater who can empty his tank knowing the other team has to throw and maybe that’s what this defense needs.

Of course the offense has to hold up its end of th3 bargain. Still waiting for that one.

  109. BucHouse Says:

I may be late to the conversation and it doesn’t really tie into this signing. But did anyone see Ian Rapoports tweets saying that Tyrann Mathieu and the Bucs have a 4yr $62million deal with $37 guaranteed??? Or is the internet playing tricks on me? It was posted yesterday

  110. cmurda Says:

@DB55. I read that he’s top paid ever from a couple different places also. It wouldn’t surprise me if there are some team friendly clauses in that contract to level out the cash.

  111. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Ryan Jensen is a tackle according to NFL.Com. He could be a potential heir to Dotson. Depth for now.

No chance does he replace Marpet at center.

    Blake_Bucsfan Says
“Can you honestly say that he wasn’t better at Guard?”

Well, of course Marpet was better at guard. He had years of experience there, and none at Center. But he is the type of guy who will excel wherever they put him. He just needs a little more time there. And he was looking great toward the end of the season.

  112. Clw JB Says:

Finally!!!!!! Could a CB or SS be next, please!!!!!

  113. Oneilbucs Says:

I been a since the oilers left Houston. Let’s stop worrying about the pass n let’s support our team.

  114. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    http://www.nfl.com/player/ryanjensen/2541159/profile

    Offensive Tackle.

  115. ScottyinFatAntonio Says:

Honey Badger now a Texan on a 1 year deal

  116. Rod Munch Says:

DanBucsFan – I’m not gonna cry if the Bucs draft Nelson, I just don’t think it’s a good value pick when the team so badly needs defensive players and I really think you can get a guard in the 2nd and 3rd round.

Take Leonard Davis for example, in 2001 he was the #2 overall pick right behind Michael Vick, he was as much of a can’t miss prospect as there ever was… and he was a complete bust in Arizona. He did have a nice run with the Cowboys to end his career, but that Arizona rook him at #2 as the can’t miss prospect of the century. That doesn’t mean Nelson won’t be good obviously, it’s just that guys like Marpet can be found in the 2nd and 3rd.

If Nelson is drafted I’d hope, assume, pray he’s starting day 1. On paper that is now a formattable offensive line – assuming they do put Marpet back at guard – so I can certainly see the appeal. But at the same time they just skipped over a defensive player they also badly need. Perhaps the idea is forget defense we’re just going to outscore people, and if so, well this is the way to do it. But I really think you can get a guy in the 2nd or 3rd that will be 90% of Nelson for a much lower price.

  117. Jjones Says:

FA for us has been about as thrilling as seeing if Punxsutawnry Phil sees his own shadow but hey, they finally got their heads out of their a$$ and made a sound signing. I wonder if their heads have retreated back to their a$$es now?

  118. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Okay, $42M is a bit high to be a backup. Roto lists him as a Center. I suppose anything is possible. Maybe he will play center.

Doesn’t he also play both guard positions?

  119. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    Honey badger to the Texans

  120. Rod Munch Says:

DB55 – I was saying if Jensen, as you said and as I fear, is actually going to play guard and not center, in that case he’s not getting anywhere close to 2018 pro-bowl money. Hopefully they’ll be smart enough to play him at center, but I really don’t know with Dirk, I can totally see them saying Marpet stays at center just because they then think it means they don’t have to admit a mistake.

  121. JimmyJack Says:

88……Let’s not worry about Davenport just yet. Until taken we can keep fantasizing about Chubb.

  122. Tval Says:

    Patience… Now go get vinny

  123. Tval Says:

The best center picked Winston over luck.. #justsayn

  124. JimmyJack Says:

Dang GOAT…..I was hoping we got him

  125. Rod Munch Says:

Bonzai – Jensen only played center for one season, that was last year, before that he was a backup guard. That’s why I fear, and it’s a legit fear, the team says he’s a guard and moves him there while keeping Marpet at center.

  126. Chris Schiefen Says:

Black/white, A/B, ol Joe. Or, they thought Marpet was better at Center, tried him there, then decided Jensen was better than him, and Marpet is better than Sweezy. Scouting is just an opinion, and opinions change based on more evidence.

  127. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

I really like this guy, he is mean and young. We would be better off playing Jensen at center and moving Marpet to guard. Whatever RB we end up drafting and Barber will have a dream of a time running behind those 2 guys.

I hope we sign Kony Ealy. He will give us a solid younger DE with plenty of experience and still has a lot of potential with his age.

Hopefully we sign at least one corner, safety, DE, OT, and RB. I realize we probably won’t sign all the positions but each one still has some talent available.

CB: EJ Gaines, Ross Cockrell, Darqueze Dennard(potential but will be cheap)

Safety: Kenny Vaccarro, Eric Reid, Morgan Burnett

    DE: Kony Ealy, Vinny Curry

    OT: Cameron Fleming

    RB: Orleans Darkwa

  128. Bucsfan1988 Says:

Honey Badger just agreed w Texans on a contract!!!!

  129. JimmyJack Says:

Rod I think it all boils down to how highly Licht has Nelson rated. If say Ward is the next highest defensive player behind Nelson but they see a large margin between the two they better get Nelson if they know what’s good for em.

If they have Ward barely behind Nelson as a prospect then yes get Ward because that need is so much greater then guard.

Just used Ward as an example based on mocks. You could use any other name you wish……Bottom line is we got a very high pick and if you’re not getting top ten talent you’re effing up. All depends on the evaluations.

  130. Howard Cosell Says:

I’ll bet the Glazers are wound tight tonight about how much money they spent, LOL…………good!….spend more you jackarses!

  131. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Apparently, this guy is extremely injury prone, from top to bottom. Last year was his first complete season out of 4 seasons.

That’s a lot of money for a guy that will likely end up on Injured Reserve one he stubs a toe.

I actually do NOT like this signing. But hey, I’m sure that, because it took a chunk of change to get him, many here are happy.

The reason I don’t like this signing are:

    Very Injury Prone
Another One Year Wonder (Licht tends to fall for them every year)

Happy if Jensen proves me wrong in my dislike of the signing, but we will have to wait and see.

    Thu, May 2, 2013
Ravens sixth-round G Ryan Jensen is out indefinitely after fracturing his foot early in training camp.

    Tue, Sep 2, 2014
Ravens practice squad G/C Ryan Jensen currently suffers from severe sleep apnea. (LOL, poor guy!)

    Sat, Aug 29, 2015
Ravens OL Ryan Jensen suffered concussion in the team’s third preseason game.

    ALSO PER ROTO:
26-year-old Jensen also has experience at both guard positions.

  132. MadMax Says:

So we have two Guards now who can also play Center. Nice! One goes down, plug and play!

Saw this from a Ravens fan:

“Bucs just got a straight animal, gonna miss the nordsman”

I think we’re looking pretty solid now on Oline and doubt we’ll draft Nelson, but if we did, good gosh we need to hit on a RB next to take advantage of that beastly 3 front. I think we’ll use him at Center and see how the chemistry goes with JW3. But as large as he is, G would be good too.

  133. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

If I were a betting man, I would lay money on the Lions winning the Superbowl next. They just signed Blount.

  134. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

MadMax, I am leaning toward him playing guard. I just think the Bucs want Marpet at center and Marpet has the chemistry with Jameis already. The run blocking woes had nothing to do with Marpet. They had to do with the guard positions.

At least that’s what I think…which has no value at all.

  135. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Thank the Lord Adrian Clayborn is off the market. I was afraid Licht would bring him back.

  136. cmurda Says:

Bonzai. The Lions? Pfft. I’ll take that bet. The Lions and the Browns are interchangeably bad. They win the draft and free agency every year and fall short when the season ends.

  137. Pryda ...sec147 Says:

This will change everything this guy at center is going to do so much for Jameis and crew.

  138. MadMax Says:

^Haha, yep….and I wouldnt have minded Blount coming back (always hated us trading him when it happened and voiced it here) but we need a small shifty change of pace back….Im still on Penny. He’s gonna surprise some people being an early 3rd rounder.

    Vita
trade back into 1st for Landry
    Penny

thats where I am first 3 picks.

  139. Jjones Says:

I would love to draft Nelson but, at #7? Looks like they’re playing FA about as safe as they can by bringing in the right mix of good character and toughness which leads me to believe they’ll follow suit in the draft. Not saying Nelson doesn’t posses any of those traits but Bucs aren’t gambling to hard, and an OG at #7 would be a gamble for Licht. Take the safest player at #7 that would be the best fit for our locker room. If it’s Nelson and it works so be it, I just don’t see them leaning that way.

  140. Guzzie Says:

Said last year new hashtag #WALLFORWINSTON we are close

  141. JimmyJack Says:

Good grief we could now use a RB who could break one!!! We’ve invested so much drafting and free agents into the offense already why stop now.

If I’m Licht Im waiting to see if somehow Barkley falls. If not I’m hoping a QB falls and Bills want him so I can demand McCoy.

Figure it out Jason…..I been watching you get all these offensive pieces since you been here and hire an offensive coach. Get Dirk that one last piece and we’ll see how good he really is.

  142. VegasBuc Says:

@Bucsfan1988 yup, looks like no Honey Badger for the Bucs.

  143. Owlykat Says:

I have been pulling for Jensen and moving Marpet back to RG. I have to give Licht credit for at last seeing the importance of that and making it happen. Sweezy needs to be cut because unfortunately his back operation caused him to lose flexibility and he no longer can get low enough to be effective. We do definitely need to keep Pamphile as a Swiss Knife backup for all the Guard and Tackle positions. Then move down with) Buffalo and get two first picks and take Davenport (yes he’s a raw talent but our DL Coach can coach him up) and then get Penny (the highest yardage of any back and can return kicks for touchdowns). Then with our second round pick get Hernandez for LG. With the third pick take Tackle Brown to be able to either replace Dotson if injured or when he retires, and just in case LT Smith continues being a turnstyle and doing holding penalties Brown can step in and play LT like his famous NFL Dad.
Fourth Round get best CB available, (Licht still needs to sign a Free Agent CB and a Free Agent Safety unless they move Tandy Man to play CB like he played at WVa)

  144. LargoBuc Says:

I wouldnt say that a year of Marpet at center is a waste. Now if injuries rear their ugly head Marpet can play center in a pinch.

  145. Ndog Says:

I love how all you smart guys keep saying Marpets natural position is guard and ripping Licht for moving him to center when it was licht in the first place that moved him to guard from LT in college! Get a clue he is just trying to build the best team he can. Plus would be a GREAT center no matter the result.

  146. Owlykat Says:

In the Fifth Round get the best big back left. In the Sixth Round get Penaro to compete with our overpaid 84 per cent place Kicker. In the Seventh Round get another small DE like Noah’s size to be a speed rusher on third down.

  147. JimmyJack Says:

How fat is this guy? Didn’t we sign a 330 pounder yesterday. I think that other guy was fat too. Don’t underestimate fat physical guys in this game. I don’t know much about those two Dlineman they got yesterday but if they bring some physicality to this team I am all for it. Softness was our biggest problem last year.

One thing that has bothered me for the longest time with this team is how soft we are when it comes to one yard. You go back and look at how soft we were last year on one-yard plays and it was pathetic on both sides of the ball. These plays are not only often very critical in deciding games but they make a big difference in the mentality of a team. If these signings bring nothing more then give us a great short yardage team it will be a major success IMO.

  148. JimmyJack Says:

Gholston is a frighten softass too. They better have a danged good reason to bring that guy back if they do. Dude is the biggest guy on the field and plays like a teddy bear. He was the best player on the field I though in the home opener against the Bears then just disappeared.

Frighten leadership needs to step this year. You got a guy like Gholston not playing his bes5 get up in his face or get him the heck out of he can’t hack it. Don’t just let the guy play teddy bear football all year. It’s counterproductive to anybody playing near him.

  149. NFLNut Says:

    ***********************

I TOLD ALL THE HATERS AND I WAS 100% RIGHT.

THIS signing PROVES that the Glazers are all-in this year on the team and 100% ALL-IN ON JAMEIS … they just handed Jensen the largest contract in NFL history for a center … to protect Jameis.

813BucBoi and all the others whining about Licht’s inaction and spitting conspiracy theories that the Glazers were tanking the season just got silenced.

NOW … I’ve heard many different figures of what we actually have left to spend ranging from just $2mil to $7.5mil all the way up to $17.5mil … can someone clarify this with any accuracy?

The Honey Badger would have been a great signing and he just went cheap with a 1 year $7mil deal to the Texans … I’m pretty shocked as I figured he’d sign with a contender and the Texans suck though they do play in the worst division in the NFL and could sneak into the playoffs as a wildcard if Deshaun Watson can manage to stay healthy.

Anyways, if all we have left is $2mil I’m guessing we just bring back Simms … if we have $7.5mil I’m guessing we bring back Pamphile and Simms and maybe sign a Vinny Curry … but if we still have $17.5mil I’m hoping we sign a #2 CB like EJ Gaines or Brashaud Breeland (Panthers stupidly voided his contract so I wouldn’t mind signing him and sicking him on the Panthers) and a starting SS like Kenny Vaccaro or Tre Boston and maybe bring Pamphile and Simms back, along with signing Vinny Curry …

BUT … THIS JENSEN SIGNING IS GREAT NEWS AND PROVES THE GLAZERS ARE 100% ALL-IN ON JAMEIS AS I ALWAYS SAID THEY WERE!

    ***********************

  150. MadMax Says:

Haha, UMBC taking down #1 ranked VTech on TNT…..2 mins left, man thats a shocker.

  151. NFLNut Says:

As for the Marpet G/C thing … I think it’s obvious he’s moving back to guard … Jensen was likely told he’d have to play guard in Indy as they spent a 1st round pick on C Ryan Kelly just recently, so Jensen said, “nope, I’m playing center in Tampa!”

I don’t think going guard with our #7 pick fills anywhere near the biggest need now, but man, an O-Line of: Smith/Nelson/Jense/Marpet/Dotson … THAT could be the best O-Line in the entire NFL … seriously.

  152. MadMax Says:

$$ on U Must Be Cinderella next game!

  153. JonGruden4President Says:

Nice piece and yes I do t see this as a testament of wether or not Ali can play center it’s just simply put, he’s a potential all pro RG and Jensen is a potential all pro center. Draft Nelson in the 1st or Hernandez in the 2nd and we will quite possibly have a line that could be talked in the same room as the Cowboys. Now go get Gaines, honey badger, and curry get Walton the RB from Miami on the 3rd and we are playoff bound. Go Bucs

  154. JimmyJack Says:

NFL NUT…..I am not a hater…..but I was walking my way to the edge of the plank…..Yes I was a whiner, a crybaby I must admit. I am too much of a diehard fan and I panicked. I was so afraid this team was not going to make a move. I tried to hold it in but the fear turn into panic which turned to rebellion.

I was so distraught I went on a hunger strike that lasted 80 hours. I’m happy to inform you that the signing of Jensen ended my strike and my belly is now filled with pork chops and spegetti and meatballs.

I’m sorry I’m so pationate about my team. I realize it’s an unhealthy obsession. I also realize that my obsession actually hurts the team. They had to overpay to get Jensen to settle down the fans and end my strike. Now they have less money to spend elsewhere.

It’s just so difficult to be patient with this team, even with Winston, when we have been so bad for 16 back to back seasons.

  155. cmurda Says:

    Max,

You took UMBC seriously? Studly move my man.

  156. JimmyJack Says:

Wait…..My hunger strike lasted 80 hours!!!! Freaking O.J. Baby!!! I knew from the second they drafted him that year two would be his unleashing.

  157. MadMax Says:

Not yet, but next game lol

  158. JimmyJack Says:

And Nut you can now start figuring out ways we get Barkley in your mock drafts……I was all for Chubb1, Nelson2……Now my wishlist has Barkley2 based on need.

  159. LakeLand Says:

4 years $42 million for an average player is not a good signing.

    They grossly overpaid for him

  160. NFLNut Says:

    JIMMYJACK,

I understand man and know you just love your team … enjoy that food!

  161. MadMax Says:

@Jimmy Im with ya a little….was giving up hope then started watching basketball and said F it….they’ll do what they do. Reset myself and reassessed things a little and low and behold it hit me. All of the FA’s that burned us the past few years. So we plow through the FA field very carefully and thats what we did. GJ Licht! Still wanted a DE signing but I dont know enough to get after it like a GM (or paid enough).

But still need a DB and RB signing IMHO.

  162. DanBucsFan Says:

JimmyJack- I got a feeling Buckner gonna bring the Dawg outta our whole defense, not just the line but whole defense. Im predicting that Buckner makes such an impact with our line that he gets promoted to defensive coordinator after Smitty’s contract expires. I remember teading in Arizona several key players saying he was defensive coordinator material. Hopefully Im correct as most people are ready to run Smith out of town, but I doubt team Glazier wants to eat his contract one year after paying him top dollar to stay, time will tell. But one thing we all must admit, we have gotten tougher in the trenches so far through free agency. GO BUCS I AM A BELIEVER !!!

  163. JimmyJack Says:

Panic does weird things to your emotions Nut. I like to consider myself a calm and sensible fan/poster most of the time.

Luckily my anger and panic has subsided and I can go back to trying to be sensible about the team.

For a while there I was cussing and raging all over the comment sections. Have no idea how Joe didn’t ban me.

  164. Pa bucs fan Says:

As a Pennsylvania native and penn State and bucs fan. I wish for nothing more other than drafting Barkley. Go get him

  165. JimmyJack Says:

All I know is next year I am planning my vacation for the free agency season. My body cannot handle another year of this.

  166. LakeLand Says:

No way is Ryan Jensen with 25 career starts at OC/OG worth over $10 million a year. Now they have to pay Donovan, Kwon, Ali ,$40 million or more.

  167. cmurda Says:

@JimmyJack. The way we get Barkley is we sacrifice the entire rest of the draft a la Mike Ditka. Ain’t happening. There is no way Barkley gets out of top 3. I expect him to go to Cleveland #1 overall. Doubtful that Chubb drops to us also. Even Nelson will likely be gonzo with the immense need of O Line talent in the draft. I’m circling the wagons for Denzel Ward. 4.32 40 time. Derwin James is a possibility but somewhat of a reach. Did I mention that Ward ran a 4.32 40?

  168. Capt.Tim Says:

    So,
Buc management said Marpet was overrated at guard
Everyone fell in love with his story- and didnt critique him enough.

    Fine.
So they move him to Center,
A lower payed, less critical component to the Oline.
Thats what you do with hard workers, who cant cut it at guard.
Now the move to center makes sense.

But today- they signed a center.
Does that mean They consider Marpet a bust?
    Center is the last step

Now theres something to think about. The Bucs hierarchy considered Marpets move to center a demotion

Did I understand your take on the conversation correctly?

  169. JimmyJack Says:

Max……One thing that I believe to be true with Licht is that he always looks a year into the future when he makes decisions.

I believe he did that when we needed a QB in his first year. His plan was to make a move in 2015.

I believe he did that last year not getting a RB til late realizing this year has another deep RB class.

I also believe Licht will take into account that next year is said to have a deep DE class. I don’t think he will be making power moves to get Ends in this draft.

Bucs fans may have to come to terms with pass rush still being a weakness on our team. That’s not Ideal but I’m OK with it if we can get an improved secondary and rushing game. Reguardless, there is no excuse to have as horrible a pass rush as we had last year. I don’t consider that product to be NFL caliber.

  170. JimmyJack Says:

Cmurda you are likely right…..I think Cle should take him #1 too.

But what if they don’t? What if NY takes Nelson, Indy takes Chubb and four QBs fill out the top six.

    BOOOOM….Barkley!!!!

Never mind NUT. I got it figured.

  171. DanBucsFan Says:

Cmurda – James would be a excellent pick , IMO he has game changer skills and will be a pro bowl ss in a couple years. I know most will disagree but I prefer him over Fitzpatrick on our team as we have a promising fs in Evans. Evans and James as our starting safeties for next 5 -6 years looks good to me. So many options, I can’t wait till draft, whoever we get will be a welcome addition.

  172. LakeLand Says:

I can’t believe the Bucs are dumb enough to give this guy $42 million for 4 seasons….$10.5 million a year? This don’t make any sense at all. They were bidding against themselves for this guy. No other team wanted him, the Colts brought him in, but no way was they paying him that kind of money.

  173. Todd Says:

The glazers spending stops here now it’s just enough to get tickets rolling for them again. We got the space for SUH go get him 👍

  174. cmurda Says:

If that’s the case Capt Tim, then we might as well fold our hand right now. I know what my eyes tell me and even with Marpet not being a stud at Center, he was still our best O Lineman, again. He was a beast at RG. If the Bucs scouting and hierarchy think Marpet isn’t cutting the mustard, then we are doomed because they clearly have no personnel skills. Come to think of it. There might be some truth to that. Michael Bennett, Blount, Talib. I can go on and on.

  175. MadMax Says:

Jimmy, click on that Harold Landry breakdown link I posted today…its a voch lombardi youtube vid. Pass rush can be had this year….and he’s slated to go in the 20’s. He’s another Vonn Miller, Demarcus Lawrence in the making (mark it down).

  176. cmurda Says:

That would be lovely JimmyJack but no way the G Men pass on Barkley. They haven’t had a running back since YA Tittle. JK. He was a receiver.

  177. LakeLand Says:

    Tyrann Mathieu – 1 year- $ 7 million
    Rashaan Melvin- 1 year-6.5 million

But the Bucs give a guy with 9 starts at OG and 16 starts at OC a 4 year $42 million contract.

  178. JimmyJack Says:

Cmurda….Don’t dash my hopes and dreams. Don’t the Bucs do enough of that?
But ok I’ll give you the benefit on that one so we need somebody to trade up with the Giants and Browns for QBs and the broncos to tale a QB and the Jets in typical Jets fashion over draft Lamar Jackson…..Boom Barkley is ours.

Don’t like that scenario? I’ll just keep playing this game

  179. JimmyJack Says:

Max….I’m sure good DEs can And will be had in this draft. I just don’t think the Bucs will make a big move to get one. I think then will and should draft one.

In my opinion if I was hoping for Landry I’d be hoping they trade out of pick 7 and get something closer to his stock. I don’t see them making a trade back into the first round into to 20’s. That would be costly. Maybe if Landry drops significantly

  180. NFLNut Says:

We will either get Chubb, Saquon or Quenton Nelson … or we can trade down to a QB needy team for a king’s ransom; those are the ONLY legit options as I see it

  181. Costa Rica John Says:

Joe, the Bucs tried Ali Marpet at center and now he has experience there. It wasn’t a mistake to try to put your best five linemen on the field. He was just a better guard and the Bucs realized an opportunity to get better at two positions with one signing. Now let’s get ready for the draft and finish the trenches. Hi Bucs!

  182. Gambelero Says:

Wow Joe. What a thread. Can’t believe the Glazers caved and gave us a decent player. When I saw that Indy was courting another guard, I thought we were getting him, but I was afraid to get my hopes up.

Credit goes to Joe, Ira and the people on this board. I’m convinced they would have left us hanging otherwise.

  183. LakeLand Says:

For the Bucs are paying Ryan Jensen, they could have signed Honey Badger and Isaiah Crowell.

  184. LakeLand Says:

    ****For the money****

  185. JimmyJack Says:

Costa RICO…..I kinda half agree and disagree with ya. The constant flip flopping of Marpet is just poor evaluation. Getting Phampile on the field as “one of our best players” was another example.

Had they addressed the positions properly we could have a line with more continuity coming into the season.

At the end, Jensen sounds like a nice addition and I can’t be upset about that. But I can still be upset with bad personal decisions(Doug Martin-like) giving us horrible results essentially wasting a season.

  186. Jjones Says:

    @Lakeland

Bucs were bidding against themselves???? No one else was interested in Jensen???? I didn’t know you had all this insider info that no one else knew. Stop comparing LB, CB, DE, OG etc etc etc pay scales to one another. Contracts vary across the board for skill positions and this is what he was worth umfortunately.

  187. LakeLand Says:

This is the dumbest free agent signing this free agency…hands down. This makes absolutely no sense at all. Giving this guy a 4 year $42 million contract. The team has a lot of needs and to make this move in plain dumb.

  188. LakeLand Says:

Enjoy the ” Blue Lights” in the basement again in 2018!

  189. JimmyJack Says:

I’ll never understand why fans worry about contracts for. Sure, it would make sense if the team had limited cap space but that’s not the case.

You want to complain about wasting money on Baker or Djax that’s for air.

But with Jensen I just don’t understand. Same with the other guys we signed. All that should matter are results. If they provide them there’s really nothing to gripe about.

  190. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs are always overpaying for free agents. They are the dumbest tam in the NFL.

  191. DB55 Says:

    Nflnut

What do you think of Mike Pouncey? He’s a 3x pro bowler, first round pick, 15th overall, he’s played center for Miami his whole career so the heat ain’t no thing, he just finished at 35 mil contract so 45 would be a raise and he’d be able to stay at home.

  192. LakeLand Says:

    **dumbest team**

  193. FortMyersDave Says:

On the night a 16 takes out a one seed (props to those kids from UMBC) the Bucs actually make a decent signing. I hear what Lakeland is saying though, the contract is a LOT of coin that could and should be used on D but perhaps the Bucs will still nail down the Honey Badger but it does seem that Licht does not want to improve CB or edge rusher until the draft for whatever reason…… Bucs still have lots of coin to play with, hopefully they use it wisely.

  194. pabucsfan Says:

Ummm. dont make it confusing. last year with their peronel marpet was best suited at center. dont be bittet cause you were so convinced that the oline was so great last year and they made it such a high priority to upgrade. now if they could only see they need to upgrade corner too

  195. NFLNut Says:

    DB55,

Pouncey can play and I would have been fine with him at C but NO WAY the team signs him now that they have Jensen imho.

  196. lambchop Says:

    Lakeland,

There’s so many ways to skin a cat, so I want to believe that Licht and Koetter can put something together that we may not all agree with but works in the end.

With an improved line, defense, and RB – the coaches and QB better perform better. I believe they can.

  197. Greecosuave Says:

We need to find another guard and draft Dotson’s replacement. Ali is better a G. I don’t think Nelson will be around at #7. Barkley will.

  198. Jjones Says:

    @FortMyersDave…Honey badger is gone, Texans.

  199. NFLNut Says:

    ****************

    LAKELAND,

I disagree with you. Jensen was the top C on the market and got just slightly above the injured Richburg guy the 49’ers signed …

Also, the Colts wanted Jensen BAD … but I believe they told him he’d have to play guard as they already spent a 1st rounder on their C a couple years ago, and Jensen wants to play C, so viola, he’s a Buccaneer.

I LOVE the Jensen signing as it improves two positions on our line (C and OG) and while I would have LOVED to have the Honey Badger, (a) “C” is more important than safety, (b) Honey Badgers injury history is concerning and (c) the Jensen signing did NOT prevent us from signing the Badger as he only got $7mil … my guess is that either Licht wasn’t all that interested in him due to the injuries or that he told Badger he’s have to play SS and Houston told Tyrann he can play nickel and FS and he preferred that.

Anyways, I believe we still have enough cap space to sign a true SS like Tre Boston, Kenny Vaccaro or Eric Reid and a #2 CB like EJ Gaines or Brashaud Breeland and I’d like to see that happen next.

    ********************

  200. lambchop Says:

Defense and RB have to be addressed in the draft.

  201. LakeLand Says:

    FortMyersDave

    What I’m saying is this,

The Bucs need to get the defense right, that is a top priority
42 million is too much to invest in a interior OL
They has the worst pass defense in the NFL
And they are not trying address the problems
They can’t rely on the 35 year old Brent Grimes to play 16+ games
They still need RBs, CBs, Safety, OT, OG, DEs
They can’t rely on Demar Dotson to play 16 games
They can’t rely on JR Sweezy to play 16 games
If they move Marpet back to OG
They would still need another OG, Sweezy is garbage, when he’s not hurt
Now they have to depend on the draft
I just can’t view this as a good signing
If it was a reach for a Edge Rusher or CB, then yeah I”m on board
But I can’t get on board with this

  202. Rod Munch Says:

I totally misread his contract number, I thought he got $7m when he got $10m, no idea how I did that. Wow, that actually is quite a bit more expensive than I was thinking earlier. I’d assume that means Sweezy will be gone – but still leaves a big hole at the other G without Pamphile. I’m not sure what Pamphile is going to get but if he’s responsible I’d be bringing him back along with drafting a guy.

  203. NFLNut Says:

^ Not sure the team cuts Sweezy … unless they draft Quenton Nelson or grab another starting quality guard later in the draft, though I suppose they could re-sign Pamphile for around $4m per and start him after cutting Sweezy …

  204. LakeLand Says:

I know I’m making a ton of errors, but it’s late and I’m hot.

    Rod Munch,

This signing will cost them a whole lot more, when they have to negotiate Donovan and Ali contracts. How much will they be asking for?

    Donovan with 48 starts
    Ali with 40 starts

    Ryan Jensen with 25 starts

I think this signing just put huge smiles on Ali and Donovan agents faces
    An early Christmas Gift

  205. Gambelero Says:

To Nut’s comment I would add that honey badger needs to play in a super flexible defensive system that lets him improvise to utilize his play making talent. I don’t think he would fit in the tightly structured, assignment-oriented defense Smith uses.

  206. THETRUTH Says:

Better to admit a mistake joe and not bad to unlike some I’m media and sports. DUngy could admit it and rather stay loyal and lose yet you praise that move by sir Dungy ?

  207. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Take Leonard Davis for example, in 2001 he was the #2 overall pick right behind Michael Vick, he was as much of a can’t miss prospect as there ever was… and he was a complete bust in Arizona. He did have a nice run with the Cowboys to end his career, but that Arizona rook him at #2 as the can’t miss prospect of the century.

Bruh, Leonard Davis was an ALL-AMERICAN LEFT TACKLE at Texas.

He was drafted to protect Jake Plummer’s blind side.
But Coach Dave McGinnins, played him at right guard his rookie season – allowing the young brotha – a chance to get acclaimed to NFL (Not Uncommon).

And real talk – he played well at guard – his rookie season.
Sh!t he even looked tailor made for the position. Futue All-Pro potential.

As expected (natural progession G,RT,LT) the following season they moved him out to RT- But things didn’t workout to well. So they kicked him back inside to guard.

But when McGinnins was fired and Dennis Green (R.I.P) took over.

Dennis Green stated “We’re paying him LT money to play guard. He was draft to play LT – Not Guard”

So Dennis Green – Moved Davis over to play LT.

And that’s when the wheels came off the bus. Dude had terrible feet – and wasn’t technical sound. Henceforth his record-breaking penalty count. So after a couple seasons – the team moved on.

Dallas saw what everyone else saw. And wisely moved the brotha back to guard.

  208. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Option #1
    LT Donovan Smith
    LG Quenton Nelson
    C Ali Marpet
    RG Ryan Jensen
    RT Demar Dotson

    Option #2
    LT Donovan Smith
    LG Quenton Nelson
    C Ryan Jensen
    RG Ali Marpet
    RT Demar Dotson

Option #3 – Draft Vea Vita in the 1st Round. And then…..
    LT Donovan Smith
    LG Frank Ragnow
    C Ryan Jensen ←
    RG Ali Marpet
    RT Demar Dotson

  209. NFLNut Says:

^ I hate the Viti Vea at #7 idea … just detest it. The draft is soooooo deep at the DT position that I’d probably throw something at the tv if they use the #7 pick on a DT … Taven Bryant could go 2nd round and be better than Viti … Harrison Phillips and Derrick Nnandi could go late 2nd to late 3rd and be fantastic, etc.

To me, we either take Saquon, Chubb, Nelson or TRADE DOWN, period.

I could see Licht maybe taking Ward or Fitzpatrick … and that could work as well, but to me a trade down makes more sense …

  210. Capt.Tim Says:

Guess everyone is just ignoring that” Marpet was very over rated at Guard”
    Comment.

    That seemed pretty important

Unless we think the Bucs are completely inept at apprasing talent

And if thats the case- then it doesn’t really matter who we sign or draft.

  211. Lord Corn Says:

    I love it LUV.

Let’s light the f*cking scoreboard up. We have too many weapons and a worthwhile franchise Qb IMO.

Pray for health and this O needs to be scoring 25-30 PPG

    Go Bucs!!!!

  212. adam from ny Says:

the thing about sweezy is, he’s too dang mean!!…like scary mean…i think he deserves another year with a shot at getting back to his inner beast…you ever see on film when jameis is on the sidelines ranting and preaching at dudes?…when he tries to do that sh*t to sweezy, sweezy just looks at him like “bro i’ll smack your teeth out”…i’ve seen it a few times, where jameis just hushes up and keeps it moving…sweezy is a scary dude man!..ask jameis…maybe give him one more year to unleash that crap on opposing teams

  213. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Lord Corn

    Amen Brotha

  214. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Off Topic

Wouldn’t hurt to sign RB Mike Davis (Seattle)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0F2vjQpQ3c

  215. lambchop Says:

    LUVMYBUCS,

Ragnow is a C. Never heard of him playing G. But, I could be wrong.

  216. Tnew Says:

Lambchop, Arkansas Fan here, Ragnow started his career at Arkansas as the right guard. Last two seasons exclusively at center. At one point there was discussion to play him at tackle due to injuries but never happened. Really good technical and physical player. Nagging injuries and an awful team for senior season kicked him out of the first round. Started halfway through freshman season and never gave up a sack. He is a better center IMO, would be worthy of trading back into the third to acquire.

Those crushing Marpet for his center play, go watch the film and watch the play on each shoulder. He was covering for poor guard play a ton this season. Especially, left guard.

  217. Defense Rules Says:

LUVMYBUCS … Your Option #3 could very well be the new Bucs’ OLine this year IF you switch Ragnow (to C) & Jensen (to LG):
    Option #3 –
    LT Donovan Smith
    LG Ryan Jensen
    C Frank Ragnow
    RG Ali Marpet
    RT Demar Dotson

From what I see, Ragnow is projected as a 3rd or 4th rounder (doubt he’ll fall that far but might). Far as drafting Vea (or Payne) in the 1st Round, would personally love it but I doubt now that it’ll happen because of the Allen & Unrein signings. I tend to think that Licht is trying to leave himself tons of flexibility with the #7 pick … grab BPA who falls to that position (he’s probably hoping either Chubb or Bradley falls that far down).

  218. Milenko Says:

I guess it all depends where he is frok.

  219. Joeypoppems Says:

I just find it hard to believe that a regime that wouldn’t give up on Doug Martin as their starting RB, wouldn’t give up on VH3 as an outside CB, and wouldn’t give up on Aguyo after awful seasons would give up on Marpet at Center after a decent season.

Ryan Jensen played Guard before moving to Center. Wouldn’t shock me if they tried him there during the offseason.

  220. El_Buc941 Says:

I say we trade #7 this year in the draft for #12 & #22 to the bills and use #12 and this year’s 3rd rounder and next year’s 3rd and 6th to draft back up to 8 or #9,draft Nelson and at 22 trade OUT of the first round to acquire more picks and with our 2nd rounder get Guice.problem solved at O Line and RB in one night.this O Line is starting to look mean specially if sweezy can stay healthy and marpet going back to guard.

  221. old time buc Says:

I may have to eat some of my words but that’s ok, I have some very good Bbq sauce. I still say we let an arm full of good talent slip to other teams and it did appear as though we would do nothing.
Only time will tell and Jensen did play increasingly better at the center position for B.
I hope they have a very good draft and there are numerous ways to go.

  222. Mord Says:

$22M guaranteed to the now-highest-paid-center in the league should be a pretty clear, eyebrow-raising message to the other guys in that room…

and can’t see how it doesn’t also amount to a capitulation by Licht and Koetter that Marpet is better as a guard, now with backup center skills

  223. K_Bassuka Says:

While I don’t hate the move, I think it was and overpay/ overreach move like Sweezy. Praying for him to stay healthy. Wish Licht would’ve go hard after the honey badger instead but oh well.

  224. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Way to leave the same story up for over 2oo post dumb ass

  225. SteveK Says:

I think this payday is the going market. Much like NFLNUT stages about QBs getting paid, and the “next in line”.

I love this move because it allows Marpet to go back ton RG where he can mail people. And it’s in ice to know that we have two competent centers in a pinch. Versatility is key.

  226. Bird Says:

    Lakeland

Dang whiner. Have you seen the contracts this year? Everyone got overpaid. Stupid money. Have you watched Jensen play. Put in his highlights at least before u make comments that are ill informed.

This kid is nasty. Teammates love him. Opponents s hate playing against him.

  227. SteveK Says:

    Stupid iPhone autocorrect bull spit!

Jensen is the next in line, much like NFLNUT states about the going rate for contracts.

Moving the Hobart Hammer 🔨 back to RG is a dream come true. Marpet is going to maul people. He’s freed up to focus on the guy in front of him and will exceed there. Moving Marpet back to RG makes Dotson better too!

Love this move! If we can’t rush the passer, then, we need to win time of possession.

  228. MadMax Says:

Yeah, do something dirty to our QB and Jensen gonna get you back….watch what he does after kiko delivers a dirty hit to Flacco…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4M1O0X5488

    I like this guy!

  229. RickinFt.Myers Says:

You really should rename your webiste “Fans Critical of the Bucs,” because no matter what the Bucs do it’s not good enough for you all.

No, the Ali Marpat to center move wasn’t a failure. It was an effort to improve the offensive line. because the Bucs had J. R. Sweezy and wanted to put the five best and biggest offensive linemen on the roster on the field at the same time. Because Marpat could play center effectively, perhaps not to a Pro Bowl level yet, they started him at center.

Now, with Ryan Jensen on the roster, he’s apparently the “best” center which allows the Bucs to perhaps start him at center and move Marpat back to guard, which may be Ali’s most natural position. Therefore, the whole offensive line is improved.

The next step is to improve the left guard position (can we get Quenton Nelson) and the o-line should be cooking with gas.

  230. SteveK Says:

Agreed! I’m doubtful Nelson falls to 7, but if he’s there we need to pick him. We’d have a savage offensive line and would bully our way to a divisional crown.

I’m so pumped for the this move. Add a solid starting center and put the Hobart Hammer back to RG. Hells yes! Can’t wait to see Marpet mauling people.

  231. Bob in Valrico Says:

Hope Jensen works out, but I do see the similarities in some of Licht’ s free agency signings. 9 starts in 4 years prior to 2017 as Lakeland pointed out.
Licht often signs backups or players with injury issues swinging for the fences.
Hope he hits it over the wall on this one,he is due.

  232. tmaxcon Says:

    RickinFt.Myers

Bucs have not won a meaningful game in 16 years fans should be critical until this Mickey mouse franchise earns its…. free passes are for tee ball not pro sports….

  233. Bucballbaby84 Says:

Genius! Genius! Genius! Way to work out that offensive line. Now I must apologize to the front office because they know exactly what their doing. In no way did I think they’d be able to make a move to put Ali back to guard. Nor did I think they’d get the help at defensive tackle that they did either. Great puzzle pieces to add. Now they gotta kill that draft! I’m still not sold on sweezy at all. He needs to make his game play production to his fat contract! I wanna see a way meaner sweezy this year! A determined one to mow down any for who steps in his direction.

  234. Bucballbaby84 Says:

Supposed to be foe* not for

  235. ChrisBucsFan Says:

Joe i don’t understand why you are so critic. Licht make a good job. Sign Jensen is the right move but for you never seems to go right. I’m sorry for that becausei know you loves Bucs.
This FA Licht don’t sign useless and expensive “big name”. And, for me, this is the right move. A lot of time, big name = big money = bad production.
Use cap space to re-sign the young core of our roster and continue to build a talent group of players, signing the right player for our system, i think is the best way we can win now and in future.

ps. Sorry for mu english. I’m italian

  236. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    LakeLand Says
“I can’t believe the Bucs are dumb enough to give this guy $42 million for 4 seasons….$10.5 million a year?”

Especially since he is extremely injury prone.

  237. Reach87 Says:

Appears to be a good signing. WRT Marpet, this improves our ability to field the 5 best…lots of flexibility. Now on to the defensive end and defensive backfield. Go Bucs!

  238. NFLNut Says:

    BONZAI,

Injury prone? What are you talking about? The guy has missed ONE GAME in the last 4 years …

    See: http://www.sportsinjurypredictor.com/player/ryan-jensen/9149

  239. Mike Johnson Says:

Find yourselves a..Discount watering hole on Buc game days. You’re gonna need it.

  240. DB55 Says:

I would have signed Mike Pouncey for that kind of money but wtfdik.
