The only conclusion Joe can come to is the powers that be at One Buc Palace are damned confident in themselves.
A team that grossly needs a defensive end ballyhoos the re-signing yesterday of a guy who led the team with 2.5 sacks. Let that sink in for a moment: Most teams toss away a defensive end who had 2.5 sacks yet Will Clarke is warmly embraced back into the brotherhood at One Buc Palace — as your Buccaneers edge rush sack leader.
Ryan Smith is still your starting cornerback for 2018. For reference, remember the defensive coaching staff tasked Smith with stopping Julio Jones on Thanksgiving Weekend in Atlanta (even though Brent Grimes was healthy). How did that turn out? Nah, we’re good there, the shot-callers at One Buc Palace are essentially telling fans.
Then there is running back. Now Joe likes Peyton Barber and perhaps he could be the No. 1 back for the Bucs. Remember, however, last season when Bucs coach Dirk Koetter was asked why Barber wasn’t getting more touches as Doug Martin continued to shat on the field week in and week out, Koetter openly scoffed that he didn’t have Gayle Sayers on the bench (To be fair, he wasn’t Martin either.)
So in three critical areas on a football team, you have a leader at defensive end with 2.5 sacks, a cornerback who has not been developed one iota, and a currently projected No. 1 running back that the head coach seemingly isn’t fully sold on, based on both his words and actions last year.
And there’s plenty of salary cap room.
What is Joe missing here?

The only not-completely-dumb reason I’ve heard people try and explain the moves on defense to this point are that the Bucs are making the switch to 3-4 this offseason, which obviously isn’t going to happen but it’s nice to fantasize sometimes.

No matter how scared Jason light might be of free agents he can’t fill all these holes in the draft we need to make some moves or we will be in the same position as last year with no depth starting players that shouldn’t even be out there there atleast 10 players in each team ever year that goes on the IR We need to continue to build our team and he needs to stop been scared of the free agents and take risk

Tampa has “won” the off season for like 5 years straight and it hasn’t gotten us anywhere, literally nowhere. Instead of whining and moaning like a bunch of little kids let’s be honest, everyone knew this was a terrible free agent class, there are zero “double digit” sack guys out there at the moment, pull your f’n skirts down, want Licht to reach from the NFL trash bin to appease You? You fans that let other teams take over the home stadium every week? You fans that call for heads as soon as the ball doesn’t bounce the bucs way? I’m fine with it to be honest, keep developing our guys, draft, trade if it’s right and if this regime gets fired because they tried to do things their way and they can sleep at night then so be it and we will live with who they bring in next year. I will try my best not to visit this site until after the draft, because frankly I can’t take the pity party anymore. Not saying I won’t, seems like I’m a glutton for punishment because I can’t stop scrolling through real pit of misery that has become the JBF comment section. We all know Einstein’s definition of insanity right? I for one am glad Tampa seems to have found it. Oh and BTW I hope Will Clarke breaks out for 10+ sacks, kid has potential, it’d be funny for him to shove it back down your throats.

Free agency is not a bad thing. Yeah, the Bucs have done horribly in the past. Joe would suggest Vincent Jackson and Brent Grimes were good signings. Bucs also got a decent punter in free agency as well.
If the team has a bad draft, they just don’t throw their hands in the air and give away all draft picks. Just because Lovie couldn’t judge talent to save his life means the franchise should ignore critical needs on the roster.
One reason one of the greatest NFL general managers was pushed out the door a couple of months ago (Ted Thompson) was because he all but ignored free agency.

Joe(s)…I so appreciate a late night article..and why, you ask? Because it’s so damn quiet over at Twitter world…I get home from work, expecting some good news..and all I see is how the Jags, who have hacked some computer, have managed to sign more guys with the cap hell they are in..
Meanwhile..nothing on the Buc front…all quiet at the west Tampa front…I am flummoxed to the 80th degree…

It is starting to feel like a return to the economizing ways of the Culverhouse era. Hopefully, Jason Licht has some bold moves in store but it sure seems like the organization has slapped a spending limit on his Amex card. Help was available and we didn’t go out and get it. We are either going to be treated to something bold and refreshingly different – or – this season will be over before the first preseason snap of the football. We’ll all be reaching for our brown paper bags to wear over our heads.

I’m not sure why everyone is so puzzled to what Bugs are doing in FA…. during the Mike Evans presser Licht came out and said himself they are focused on resigning in house guys and bringing in guys from FA to supplement the roster…like it or not…. it’s not puzzling because they have already told you what the plans are
Do I want some more guys in FA? Absolutely! But I want the right guys….I think they did pass up some guys they shouldn’t have…. but it is what it is….. here’s hoping that we can still nab a few more guys……namely Tyrann Mathieu

What this regime has just failed to realize (and really the Bucs as a franchise historically has failed to realize) is competition is king in bringing out the best of your players. You want great corners? Have 3-4 guys capable of starting and let them battle. You want a beastly line? Have a rotation of 6-7!guys and let them compete for the right to play.
You don’t sign and draft backups. You sign and draft starters across the board and then let the best man win through competition.
The Bucs very rarely do that. They gift jobs to rookies and let the incumbents know that their jobs are safe. They don’t incentivize. They do not let competition reign.
There’s still time to remedy this.
FIX THE TRENCHES, FIX THE BUCS!!

The DE corps is concerning and I just hope Licht doesn’t think he’s “done”
DE: Ayers/Spence/Clarke
DE: Gholston/Unrein/Russell
Bradley Chubb could drastically improve the corps but outside of that, some 3rd-5th round rookie like Josh Sweat or Chad Thomas isn’t going to inspire much confidence that we’ll even be able to match last year’s sack numbers.
HOWEVER, people freaking out are just silly … the first 2 days of free agency is when teams OVERPAY and that’s what happened (Solder, McKinnon, Butler, Watkins, etc) … it’s when free agency settles down that good players can be had at great prices … EJ Gaines, Tre Boston, Kony Ealy, Ryan Jensen, Mike Pouncey, Morris Claiborne, Alex Okafor, etc., are all better than many guys who have already signed and been overpaid … calm down everyone.

The draft can only slap a band aid on the secondary or the D-line, not both. I fear this will be the year that Brent Grimes starts to show his age and loses a step (he was already getting burned and loafing here and there last season). The best we can hope is one of the two units (D-line or secondary) can be at least average after the draft but the other will suffer as a result of neglect.
Now in my wildest optimistic dreams: Noah Spence is healthy for a full season and plays like the prospect he was thought to be, GMC continues to play at a pro-bowl level, the D-Line is shored up in the draft with high draft picks THAT MAKE AN IMPACT, Grimes continues to be ageless, VH3 steps up into the outside corner role that may even line up against opposing teams 1WR, and Justin Evans ballhawks.
My pessimistic outlook is Spence gets injured for more than half the season, GMC gets injured a couple of games, Beau Allen does little to nothing, we reach for players in the draft who don’t deserve to be starting yet are forced into starting roles, Grimes starts getting torched left and right, VH3 still has no confidence, and the safeties look lost and confused.
Crazy how my pessimistic outlook sounds just like the 2017 season with the exception of O.J. Howard.

My theory which is someone else’s theory is the Bucs know exactly what is going to happen with Jameis Winston’s uber investigation and it’s not good news. They’re not going to invest in free agents when the QB is going to be suspended.

In fact, I think I have figured it all out.
Everyone knows that Jason Licht’s biggest weakness is free agency, and his biggest strength is the draft. Even has to accept this as true. So he has smartened up.
He’s not going to overpay for any free agent any more. He doesn’t want one year wonders unless the value makes them worth the risk. He won’t commit to a long term, expensive contract for a player who he will wish to be rid of in a year or two.
The man knows that this is the first year of three in which he will have to re-sign some very expensive players. He has to make sure any expensive free agents can come off the books by next year.
Remember, he doesn’t just have to re-sign offensive players. Kwon will need a deal. He won’t be cheap. Beckwith will need an extension in a couple years, since his rookie contract is a short one.
He will even have to deal with McCoy and David again before too long.
This means he needs to consider value and length of commitment with all free agents. No young free agent is a sure thing. Few older free agents will agree to lower contracts or shorter contracts.

We added DJax who Jameis wasn’t connecting with but appears he will have a chance at redemption.
We added the tree hugger Baker. Bad move and hurt our chemistry. He’s gone. Addition by subtraction.
We got OJ freaking Howard and Evans who both look like solid future pieces. As well as Kendall Beckwith who played dang well.
Spence, Jameis, Kwon, Grimes, David,McCoy, ME13, VH3, baker, and maybe more all were hurt. Expect that to happen again?
Jameis is older (wiser?), we will have a new RB, I bet a new OL and DE as well.
Kicker is upgraded. Run stop upgraded. Trying for OL.
We lost 7 games by 6 or less. We are not far off.
So much to be excited for and positive about. I could literally go on for hours. So what we didn’t win the off-season on paper. We were paper champs last year and howd that work out.

Simply not a true statement.
Jason Licht has successfully addressed 2-4 positions in every one of his drafts. He’s better at it than most GMs.
Vea in round one.
A DE in round two.
A CB in round round two (after trading back up with forth).
A RB in round five.
Another DE in round five (after using a 6th and 7th to trade up)
A Safety in round six
We know Licht will end up with two second rounders. That’s his usual thing.

I made this same observation yesterday. The way I figure, the Glazers are 110% committed to building through the draft, and they’ve come to realize that in doing so, it’s going to take time and sacrifice.
I’m hoping the constant turnover in coaches has taught them that there are no quick fixes.
Really, no one can honestly claim they’ve gone cheap this off season. They’ve already spent a ton of money on re-signing key players.
I realize fans want quick fixes, but those only occasionally succeed, and almost never for teams that have consistently struggled for a decade.
The Glazers have shifter their perspective to the long view.
Heck, I would not be surprised if McCoy is trades this year or next in order to acquire picks. Wouldn’t happen until the draft though. If word leaked now that he was available, team moral would plummet. It would have to be a big surprise and a really good deal for the Bucs.
McCoy has actually reached the reasonable period of his contract. Heck, only $500,000 of dead cap this year. None next yeR. And he’s locked up for 3-4 more years at arround 13m per year. For him, that’s a good price…and that make him good trade bait.

Iv’e lived through a lot of Buc offseason and one thing Iv’e learned is regardless of who you pay for in FA or regardless of who you draft it is very difficult to equate those moves to the overall outcome of the season. The way we are approaching FA to day has very little correlation to our record 6 games into the season. This year I stand by my belief that due to a weak FA class (esp at edge rusher), the ridiculous salaries that desperate teams are paying, and the absolute “Chines Fire-drill the movement of QB’s has created the best rout for the Buc’s is to resign some players and lay low in FA. If we are going to improve it will be through the draft. One thing I think we lose sight of as a fan is no matter what our personal or for that matter collective perceptions of what the team should do you are only kidding yourself if you that the Buc’s management cares. As long as 96% of the fans could care less and are simply thrilled at having a professional football franchise in the Tampa area, you can post your complaints and arguments until you wear your fingers to the bone. NO ONE IS LISTENING. They have a plan and their going to do what they want. So enjoy the NCAA play-offs, go to the beach, read a good book but don’t get an ulcer over the Buc’s offseason. Life is too short.

A GM doesn’t reach a .333 winning/losing percentage by accident. Licht’s Out has “skilz dat pay da billz”. I’m actually glad he’s not dabbling in free agency at this point given his track record. The more than likely new regime in 2019 can begin with a fresher slate this way. It’s time to identify some young and promising coaching talent like a Sean McVay, Doug Pederson etc. Things have gotten so stinky that it may be tough to land top talent in the GM dept. Sadly, we had that fella in the building ( Jon Robinson ).

I still think the Glazers are trying to make the team attractive to the next Gm/coach. They don’t want to deplete the draft resources or get into any guaranteed money signings that would likely the next regime from making over the roster how they please. For this reason all those wanting GMC or any other big name traded can forget it. The next coach will get to decide if GMC is a building block or tradable asset, not the dead regime walking of Koetter/Licht. I’m not even sure teaching the playoffs will save their jobs if this is the mentality of the Glazers.

From what I can tell, it is not for lack of wanting to make a splash in free agency as it is players who would rather be playing on a competitive team somewhere else. Licht went after Robert Quinn and struck out along with some other players.
Last season was a culmination of poor judgement on the age and effectiveness of their DL which dominoed into many other problems. And signing a big name is not going to allow that player to play multiple positions. I’m actually a little impressed the GM and HC are not trying to buy their way out of a hole to save their job.
The season is not lost yet. If we can get a stud DE, starting RB, and a starting CB in the draft. It’ll go a long way to improve this team. We can probably poach a S and OL during the 53 man roster casualties. There is still time to plug a few holes yet before this free agency comes to a close.
Let’s hope for the best. We don’t need pro bowlers at every position.

The word on the street is, that the Glazers “realized” how bad the roster was from the talk show dominik/loser lovie,!!!!!! Now that Coach Gruden was off the board the plan is to get two more draft classes in for this coaching staff!!!!!!

Sorry Realist, don’t think you’re close on this one. Bucs’ roster has a LOT of holes in it right now; you know that as well as I do. No way even getting FOUR starters from the draft will make so much as a dent in plugging those holes. There was enough talent available in FA this year to at least make us competitive … with a strong draft. Licht has blown off FA for all practical purposes. When you start where the Bucs were in 2014 (yup, 2-14), no way we can build strictly through the draft. Winning teams (like the Patriots, Falcons, etc) have traditionally used free agency & trades to shore up their weaknesses. Folks need to stop making excuses for the Glazer Boyz & Licht … from a management perspective, they’re abysmal.

Looks like the Glazers are just checking out this season and are willing to suffer through a 2 or 3 win season to save a few bucks. Not sure if they are having trouble financially, don’t care anymore, or don’t see any way to drastically improve this horrendous defense and simply don’t want to waste money trying to. Whatever the reason it certainly looks like the Raheem era all over again as they aren’t spending money to bring in talent. As of now this team looks to be worse than last year and that is saying something. At least this year I don’t have the dilemma I had last year when I contemplated season tix. I won’t be spending a dime for tix or gear this year.

Why wouldn’t Licht go after Suh? If you add up all these mediocre DT salary they just signed, they could have pay Suh with it. Gerald and Suh in the middle, what team can stop that? Any DE we sign will have a field day every game and it will give them one on one battles on the edge. That sounds like a better battle plan then this stupid rotation crap they tried last year. What good is depth if they can’t get pressure?
Our GM is crap and needs to go. He’s has dinner nothing to impress me since drafting Jameis. I’ve been a season ticket holder for the last 3 years but lost faith and will not be one this year.

One of the greatest things about the NFL is…You get what you deserve. There is no hiding. Your record will indicate exactly where you stand. And we will get what we got coming..Good..or Bad. Who Knows? Maybe this Bucs coaching staff and Gm know and see something we as fans do not. I hope so. For there sake. So we want them to make token moves? Create the illusion that things are fixed to make us feel nice, to prove they want to improve a horrible pass rush, even if it doesn’t make sense to them? Just to hear people crying about him wasting money in October when those players aren’t playing as well as they are paid. If they were to do that, then they truly should be fired on the spot. We should reach for a C level player who’s coming off an Achilles injury? We really are to believe they are actively trying to sabotage themselves? They have a plan and I’m saying they’re clearly more qualified than us good folks in the comment section to implement that plan. Just let it play out man.

Likely when Licht proved how inept he was in Free Agency his first year here, he excused it all by telling the Glazer boys that you have to build your team through the draft, because I heard one of the Glazers on Sports Radio this week justifying their poor showing in this year’s Free Agency by Licht, by saying “Our conclusion is you build best through the draft.” Guess they never noticed that the Eagles were heavy participants in Free Agency last year and that allowed them to win the Super Bowl!!! The other teams in our Division know that secret too as does the rest of the NFL and they have been cleaning up in Free Agency this year while Licht sat on his rear. The Glazers deserved what they got when they hired a Nomad Scout and promoted him to GM. Next year they need to hire a proven GM who wins in Free Agency, the Draft, and on the field as a result. Believe me they have the money to do it. If not sell the Bucs to the owner of the Lightening. Stop trying to follow the owner of the Rays get filthy rich model at the expense of fleasing and disgusting the fans!!!

The Glazers probablly tightened their wallets a bit given Lights FA record. Probably said “Stop doing that!!”
