“Cartwheels” For Jason Licht
March 15th, 2018It is not all gloom and doom for the most puzzling Bucs offseason in years.
Yeah, fans are a little perturbed at Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht for what appears to be two weeks of hell for the shot-caller of football operation.
Bucs fans see swings and misses on Robert Quinn, on Michael Bennett and in recent days, Licht apparently is in a game of chicken with free agents and their agents at grave positions of need on the roster.
From the outside, Licht is getting kudos from folks who traffic in player contract information, such as Jason Fitzgerald of OverTheCap.com. He believes the way Licht handled the new contract for Mike Evans, folks at One Buc Palace should be doing “cartwheels.”
@Jason_OTC: Bucs should be doing cartwheels they got their deal with Evans done before these two WRs signed. Incredibly smart by their front office
Joe isn’t sure who the other two receivers Fitzgerald is referring to, but just a hunch that one of them is shady, sophomoric drama queen Odell Beckham.
In other words, Licht, in getting Evans to put pen to paper earlier this week, didn’t allow another team to set the market for wide receivers.
March 15th, 2018 at 8:02 am
Now lets hope Mike stays healthy and gets more physical against DBs in coverage. Earn that money Texas boy!
March 15th, 2018 at 8:04 am
Sammy Watkins just got 13-14 per
21 mil bonus and that guy hasn’t done crap.
So kudos licht
No sign some players
March 15th, 2018 at 8:04 am
Probably referring to Watkins and Robinson, both of their per year averages came in about a million less than Evan’s, when he has proven a much better option than either.
March 15th, 2018 at 8:06 am
Cool story, bro.
How about the Buccaneer pass rush?
We need improvement on the trenches.
Save the cartwheels for when this roster has glaring deficiencies upgraded.
March 15th, 2018 at 8:10 am
Hope Licht does the right thing and trade gmc, lvd, aires and all the old guys who didn’t get us anywhere for many years. We don’t need anyone in FA unless we find a young promising jem. 2018 will not be good for us regardless. let’s dump the false hope and avoid the dissapointment. gather some picks, get some young talent with attitude and hope to turn this franchise around for 2020
March 15th, 2018 at 8:11 am
Sammy Watkins 16M a year and Allen Robinson at 14M are the two receivers
March 15th, 2018 at 8:13 am
No JBF “dinner bell” for the Bucs, they’re having junk food at the “snack bar” ……..
March 15th, 2018 at 8:18 am
Let’s face it. All free agents have warts and are either:
Too old
Coming off injuries or
Cost too much money.
All are on the down side or considered not worth it or they would not have been let go.
It looks like the Bucs are looking at overachievers who have potential and are hungry and cost less and have prove it contracts.
March 15th, 2018 at 8:20 am
Wooooooooooooooooooooow, he made a no-brainer decision to re-sign a core piece of the offense that is still young. Bravo
March 15th, 2018 at 8:26 am
Lightningthunder
The BUCS ORGANIZATION has WARTS not the free agents… glazers have proudly rendered Tampa bay buccaneers the least desirable location in nfl
March 15th, 2018 at 8:28 am
Worrying more about salaries than talent is exactly why bucs are laughing stock and perennial losers….
March 15th, 2018 at 8:29 am
It’s only a disappointment to people who kept talking about the free agency dinner bell ringing and vaults if Glazer cash.
If you don’t build it up so much you save yourself a lot of disappointment Joe.
But I know…..it’s fun ( and profitable) to dream!
March 15th, 2018 at 8:33 am
Free agency is a team KILLER if not properly handled. I like the way theyre feeling it out right now. Plenty of time to acquire/trade/draft and solidify both lines
March 15th, 2018 at 8:34 am
If the don’t bring in difference makers to pair with the young talent, then it will be all for nothing because they will never develop like they should and never sniff the playoffs.
All of the free agent errors came as a result of over paying the back up’s backup or a broken down vet past their prime.
March 15th, 2018 at 8:35 am
I just don’t understand why we would pick up and over pay 2 under performing D-linemen, when that money could be spent on a D-linemen that will actually have an impact. I don’t get this philosophy!
Aren’t you supposed to build cheap depth with later round draft picks and undrafted players while using free agency to fill holes in your starting line up? I’m tired of this inept organization! They have no plan, try to do everything on the cheap, overhype the product they’re trying to sell us and it produces the exact same results, for over a decade now.
March 15th, 2018 at 8:40 am
To be honest… I am tired of hearing things about the future and being smart with the cap… Who cares? I want… We want to win now? I am tired of hearing how things will look 5 years from now. We have enough problems going 8-8 consistently….
If you look at the Eagles they were negative in cap space. Patriots were also not in great “cap shape” and you know what? They went to the super bowl and figured it out. Especially the Eagles. They have made trades, restructured deals etc. The Eagles seem to have the majority of their core intact even after being in cap hell. I am tired of excuses.
March 15th, 2018 at 8:42 am
The hangover from irrational exuberance …even if they sign Jensen…I know we need a center but all I know about him is he’s supposed to be the best of the centers not signed by their own teams……as far as the D linemen…stop gap vets that know how to play the game and will be used until the rookie help arrives and is ready to assume their starting projected roles….oh well it is a beautiful Florida morning…
March 15th, 2018 at 8:45 am
doolnuts…Pats and Eagles have QB that throw darts…..I wish to Bucs would just be honest and say “we are rebuilding” it is obvious to all there are many pieces missing…hence the desperate FA and draft talk…
March 15th, 2018 at 8:46 am
I would think he is referring to Allen Robinson and Sammy Watkins. They are in the same range per year money wise when Evans should be paid way more than them.
It was great timing to get a deal done
March 15th, 2018 at 8:47 am
AlteredEgo I agree with this.. I am critical of Winston’s turn over issues and if you aren’t being critical you aren’t paying attention to football. I see a lot of blame on Koetter’s play calling but I can assure everyone the play called in the huddle wasn’t fumble the direct snap or throw into triple coverage…
That being said Winston is still only 24 fingers crossed on growth and development next year….
March 15th, 2018 at 8:48 am
Yeah should be doing cartwheels off the skyway bridge the way he is attacking free agency sounds like Jenssen is heading out of town so once again another impact free agent is parade waving past the Bucs. Whatever man this is Soo stupid! WTF???? I feel like Culverhouse is still owning this team!
March 15th, 2018 at 8:50 am
Tnoles
The glazers are doing thier very best to make culvehouse look like a dream owner.
March 15th, 2018 at 8:55 am
@AlteredEgo
I have no problem with a stop gap player being added from time to time, but an under performing stop gap player still leaves a gap! It is at best a lateral move. Brent Grimes is a good example of what a stop gap player should look and perform like. How many of those type guys do we have on our roster? Maybe Jackson, who else?
Face it, these are cheap moves made by a cheap organization, who is more concerned with padding their pockets then actually winning.
March 15th, 2018 at 8:57 am
I have always defended the G’Boyz…but I am beginning to wonder….it is difficult to have a top down football culture with their personalities…part of which is being able to identify, hire and relate to real football men…maybe they’ll be the first to hire a transgender LGTBVZX front office and coaching staff
March 15th, 2018 at 8:58 am
He will not be here next year so who gives a crap. He is dropping the ball this off season.
March 15th, 2018 at 9:00 am
Now we know what the Licht plan is. Save the glazers money and get a bargain by all means necessary, winning is optional
March 15th, 2018 at 9:00 am
Maybe we’ll draft the first LGTB kicker!
March 15th, 2018 at 9:01 am
AlteredEgo
I likecyour direction but Dungy can’t help bucs he already failed….
March 15th, 2018 at 9:02 am
The glazers have a personality ?
March 15th, 2018 at 9:06 am
Jensen flying to Colts!???!!!!! Wtf
March 15th, 2018 at 9:06 am
Shane….the worse part with your comment about late picks being depth, the $8.5 million spent on Urein and Allen are on former 7th rounder and a UDFA, while Lichts 5-7 picks the past 4 years are always cut, only Pamphile and Bond has played a down for the Bucs, that’s 2 out of 15ish, it’s like after the 4th round Licht is wasted, that’s where the Pats get most of their OL, Licht doesn’t coach them though, but it seems like we give up on rookie projects too early, we are screwed once JW gets paid, won’t have $8 mil to throw at backups anymore
March 15th, 2018 at 9:07 am
We should be doing cartwheels because the ONE starter from his 2014 draft made it to an extension. Evans is a very talented player but again, was he the best WR in that draft? OBJ is better and Landry has been more productive. Had we got a few more starters from that draft…..like….one more. I could say not a bad haul but we passed on two franchise QBs in the 2nd round to draft a guy of the same or lesser talent the next draft at #1…..who is now under investigation for all the same crap he was pulling in college. Its like saying Mark Dominick drafted McCoy…
March 15th, 2018 at 9:09 am
Bucs fans mad about this off-season so far must have really short memories.
How have all the big dollar early free agent signings worked out for this team in the past? Vincent Jackson is about the only bright spot among literally dozens of whiffs.
Take a chill pill, don’t buy into “Joe’s” doom and gloom bull spit. Maybe a couple of the moves these other teams are making will work out, but the vast majority will take this money and pack it in.
The low profile moves that happen later on will be the most effective players.
March 15th, 2018 at 9:09 am
Glazers won’t even pay for squints LASIK
March 15th, 2018 at 9:09 am
Did we miss out on Jensen?
Sweezy is toast, cut him.
March 15th, 2018 at 9:11 am
Look at the teams with the same record or worse and they are killing it in free agency and this notion that well, they spent big money before and it didn’t work out so that is why they don’t want to spend the money now. Has anyone in the organization ever heard of the “if you don’t first succeed try try again theory”? Who is running the pro player personnel Dept. Over there? Because they need to be fired! I guess instead of subscribing to the try again theory they prefer the definition of insanity one instead.
March 15th, 2018 at 9:13 am
Gotbucs,
Gotta spend upwards of 90% of the cap.
10 years since playoffs, one better than Cleveland.
12 years since we had a defender get 10+ sacks in a season, god bless Simeon Rice.
We are signing run stoppers when we have three mvp/Super Bowl appearance QBs in our division. They will throw the ball!
Our pass rush is beyond brutal. The worst in the league for years.
Our CBs, outside of Grimes, stink. The #11 overall pick Heargraves is too slow and small and plays too far off the damn ball.
This reminds me of Kevin Bacon in Animal House during the parade: “All is well! All is well!”
Status woe anyone? FFS LICHT, fix it now.
March 15th, 2018 at 9:16 am
The only thing it shows is that Evans wants to be here ….nothing more.
March 15th, 2018 at 9:17 am
Glazers are buisness men they don’t care that much about the sport. Why did they buy manchester united? do they love soccer?
March 15th, 2018 at 9:19 am
What difference does it make to get our best players under a good contract for the team dollar wise if we are never are going to spend it anyway?
March 15th, 2018 at 9:19 am
Haven’t seen anything indicating that Jensen has left Tampa yet? Anyone see any updates anywhere?
March 15th, 2018 at 9:25 am
I’m into competitive football, it’s my entertainment on Sundays. I love watching good games and teams that play to the wire.
I work in business all week and look at numbers. Do I give a shoot about safeties and cap space? F, no! Why is a football website quoting writers complimenting what Jason Licht is doing with contracts. All well and good that Mike Evans will be a Buc but we all want to judge the organization on what type of product plays for us and to be fair the team is unbalanced, uninspired until after halftime and can’t run the ball or stop a decent passing attack. Special teams suck, you wanna he more touches to DJax, put him back to return punts, he was fantastic as a or in Phila. Get passing plays into the offense that don’t take 5 seconds to develop.
Can go on and on ad nausea but please no more articles discussing the business side of the Bucs. The Glazers win at the bank but lose on the field. They have been horrible owners since Malcolm passed.
March 15th, 2018 at 9:28 am
Oh boy…look at all the above names linked to the Bucs…. Packers so far have Wilkerson and Graham….Jimmy Graham, as if they needed more offense with Rodgers back. I’m so excited about what the Bucs have done, I tried to do a cartwheel and wet myself.
March 15th, 2018 at 9:31 am
Are any of our “low energy, no name” free agent signings worthy of a press conference?
March 15th, 2018 at 9:50 am
No more press conferences, we should not celebrate anybody until they actually do something HERE!
March 15th, 2018 at 11:23 am
Next year they gonna Cartwheel ole Jason, Koetter and Smitty right out of Tampa Bay. Good riddance!
March 15th, 2018 at 11:25 am
Sure, the team will be 4-11, but will will win the” who has the most Cap room” title every year!!
Whoopie!
And they are counting on us being stupid enough , to still pay for a deliberately inferior product
Spend minimum
Make maximum
Thats the only competion anyone at One Buc place is worried about winning!
March 15th, 2018 at 11:30 am
4-12, damn big fingers
March 15th, 2018 at 11:32 am
Guys Jensen apparently is NOT coming……Been in Tampa left with no contract, and flying to Indianapolis……..
March 15th, 2018 at 11:58 am
I imaging Licht reading that tweet and going, “damn I got lucky I didn’t even think of that!”
March 15th, 2018 at 11:59 am
Who F-ing Cares!!! licht is still trash and it’s UNBELIEVABLE that he still had a job.
March 15th, 2018 at 12:02 pm
@ Ed
Kudos my man that was well said!
March 15th, 2018 at 1:38 pm
Licht is still the culprit letting Jensen get out of Tampa! He has already let the top RBs get away too and we needed one of them as well. We are going to be left with crumbs as usual and he will talk them up to try and help sell tickets. So far there has been no improvement of our trenches and no top RB. You watch Licht will stubbornly just go after BPA in the draft and ignore needs once again which will always leave us with a surplus in a few positions and ignore others. It is a recipe for disaster. And an 84 per cent Kicker is no great kicker.
March 15th, 2018 at 4:31 pm
Just in case any Pollyanna here considers Unrein or Allen’s signing by Licht as building up the trenches, Unrein is 30 years old and 300 pounds and we let Mc Donald go who was about the same size but was much better at sacks and turnovers and even could play McCoy’s position when he was hurt and was good at stopping the run too so to me Unrein is not as good a replacement of what we had in McDonald. Apparently Allen is a little bigger if he could play NT in a three four, which we are not going to by the way; and he was just a rotational backup at Philly. The person he is replacing is our backup over the last few years, Siliga, who also could play NT because he was 330 pounds. So that is no gain but just replacing one backup NT for another one. So to me we are slightly worse off than we were last year because we’ve lost McDonald’s sack production and ability to cause fumbles and McDonald’s ability to play the three technique and superior knowledge of our Defense. Licht has not upgraded the trenches at all, he has just tried to catch up for what he has let go, and hurt our cap space and defensive flexibility and our sack production, and even worse has an excuse now for not getting Vea in the draft who will be a future star player like Latuia and play for ten years as an elite player. So don’t expect me to be giddy about these two signings!!!
March 15th, 2018 at 4:34 pm
i am assuming that the people who think the Glaziers are the worst owners ever, were not around for the Cloverhouse years. At least he Glaziers are keeping top talent like Evans around. The fact that Licht keeps making horrible free agent signings for ungodly amounts of money. The Glaziers agreed to pay guys like Anthony Collins, Michael Johnson, Chris Baker, and D Jax a lot of money. Licht simply can not evaluate free agent talent. part of the low salary cap right now is because they thankfully have cut most of the failed FA’s.
March 15th, 2018 at 7:48 pm
even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.
