Big raise.
UPDATED 4:07 p.m. – It appears Cam Brate won’t need to room with Adam Humphries and Ryan Griffin any longer.
After today. Brate can buy his own pad (bad real estate timing) and lease out rooms to Humphries and Griffin.
Pet Jenna Laine of ESPN, Brate and the Bucs have agreed to a six-year contract. ProFootballTalk.com details Brate’s deal includes $18 million guaranteed as part of a $40.8 million pact, plus about 10 percent of that total is tied to incentives for catches, touchdowns and Pro Bowl visits.
Props to Brate for the well-deserved raise.
Joe never figured the Bucs would be crazy enough to let Brate go. As Joe wrote earlier today, middle-of-the-road starting tight ends earn $6 million per season. Brate made $679,000 last year.
O.J. Howard won’t earn big money until 2021, assuming he’s still around and producing. It was a no-brainer for the sign Brate and cross tight end off their list.
Dirk Koetter knows how to use two tight ends, right? Otherwise there’s no way this team would have drafted Howard in the first round last year.
Now it’s time for the Bucs to get the most out of these stud pass catchers. No team should be so bad in the red zone with targets like Howard, Brate, Mike Evans and DeSean Jackson.

Smart move for a change. I would be surprised if he plays out that deal though, Brate might be our best trade value at some point. I like him, but with the investment in OJ and depending on how the staff feels about Auclair I could see Licht phone ringing with interest from some other teams.

Good deal for both sides. Maybe Joe can confirm, but I understood it carries an out after two seasons, which hopefully isn’t the case, b/c he’s a good player and a good guy as well. Lots of incentives in there for catches, TDs, etc which is also interesting especially given how many other targets JW has at the moment.
Still, it’s a rare player and team friendly deal overall IMO, and it keeps two Pro-Bowl caliber TEs in house for at least 2-3 more years.

Bonzai, he definitely worked his butt off not only in games but in practice. His first year he was the very last player on the field in the couple of practices i was at that year, simulating snaps and getting off the line quickly. I yelled and thanked him for putting in the extra work and he yanked his helmet off and came over and thanked me too. Class act and my favorite currnt player. He will get even better.

Good for Brate. Whoever the next Bucs coach is can use a 2 TE set like the Pats do, and the Pats are quite successful on offense. OJ is without a doubt a superstar and Brate benefits from that tremendously since Brate can’t get open versus man coverage unless its someone down the depth chart – and that works out perfectly since OJ gets defended by guys at the top of the depth chart. It’s a very good 1-2 combo, and if the offense ends up featuring only 1 TE then Brate has pretty decent trade value. It’s a win-win for everyone, except the dummies who complain about the Glazers being cheap, and now complain about Brate making too much money. LOL!

On the surface I view this deal as a bit steep, but considering his numbers over the past 2 years are comparable to Zach Ertz (considered one of the best TEs right now and who received a similar extension) I’m all for it. If we can just utilize 2 TE sets more effectively and if Jameis finds his rhythm quickly enough we can give Brate the opportunity to earn that money.

I just hope we can replicate the twin tight end sets that Belicheat was running when he had both Aaron Hernandez and Gronk. We are one or two pieces on the O-line away from having a monster offense! Draft Quenton Nelson and get a decent running back to complement Peyton Barber. (of course Jamies is the Wildcard in this 2TE offense seeing as he is no Tom Brady)
I actually think Peyton Barber can be a really good RB if he works on his catching abilities this training camp and can be a feature back although if Charles Sims is going to be the 3RB then he can’t be just a “receiving back” and needs to improve his running game

BILLS just traded their 22nd pick and Cordy Glenn for the 12th pick … they now have #12, 22, 53, 55, and 96 in the first 3 rounds and therefore enough draft capital to get all the way up to #2 if they want … it seems obvious they want one of the top 4 QBs but still may not be able to get higher than #7 if the Giants and Colts aren’t willing to deal … Bucs #7 pick will be a HOT commodity imo.

There should be little rush in giving Humphries a new contract, just play out the year and see what happens. Godwin looks like he’ll be a solid #2 in time, but if you pay Hump that means you want him at #3… ugh, no thanks. #4, sure! #3… one injury away from being a starter? We’ve already saw that and it was a disaster.

I thought the one year $10 mill for Grimes was crazy, but I’m liking this. So are there gonna be some major trades for us now or just no good players in FA??? Everyone knows the Glazers don’t spend big money on multiple players. That’s why we’re at the top of the cap every year. We shall see.

Biggest disappointment is not Brate signing this contract but that Koetter doesn’t know how to use 2 good tight ends in his offense as he showed last season. Koetter has 2 very good tight ends and we’ll see how much he knows how to utilize them in his offense.

Godwin looked pretty good, but it was his rookie year. We’ve seen WRs have good first years before and turn out to be busts (Clayton for example). And frankly, Godwin has not earned the #3 spot yet.
Humphries has. For now.
Remember though…Jackson might have a $7,500,000 dead cap hit this year (2018) if cut, but next year he carries no dead cap space at all, making him expendable. If he doesn’t produce like they want him to, that will make a #2 spot available. Humphries and Godwin will compete for that.
Also…really, the #3 spot is now a starting spot these days too.

Hard to tell how valuable our #7 pick can be in a trade until we see what the Browns/Broncos/Jets all do about QB before the draft. It’ll all come down to the willingness of teams ahead of us to move down combined with available QBs and other’s bidding to move up

Oh good lord. OJ was a rookie. He didn’t actually prove he was good last year. He has potential to be great, but he’s not the first at that position to do so. He’s got to earn more before he gets more.

g720 – Brate was injured most of the last year so I wouldn’t really blame Dirk for lack of knowing how to use him. The type of offense Dirk runs uses a lot of 2 TE sets and getting production shouldn’t be a problem since both OJ and Brate are very good receivers, with OJ being bigger, faster and stronger than even Evans and being able to play WR if he needs to – although he’s a better blocker than Brate is already so you really want OJ playing TE. Anywho using both isn’t a problem and it should not only help the passing game as OJ continues to develop and Brate is healthy, it should help the running game as well.

I don’t actually mind the 1 year $10m for Grimes. Revis got 1 year $16m from the Bucs and basically robbed us. Grimes has done more for the Bucs than he did.
And the deal is only one year, meaning its off the books the year when big rookie contracts need new deals.

The deal with Jackson was always considered a 2 year deal with a 3rd year as an option, that’s what everyone said at the time and it’s still true and the team needs Jackson playing since he in large part helped open up the middle of the field by drawing off safeties who still had to pay attention to him and his speed. Jackson isn’t going anywhere this offseason and no one that pays any attention should want him going anywhere – if he did and the Bucs didn’t replace him then once again Humphries is one injury away from starting, and if you want to tank the Bucs season, make Hump a starter.

Bonzai – How did Revis “rob” the Bucs? He came back from a major injury and had a very solid season, giving up only 1 TD all season if my memory is correct. Everyone knew he wasn’t going to be a superstar coming off a major injury that season and yet he was really solid – had the Bucs kept him around he would have been back to his normal self by the following season which was always the plan. If anything I think Revis played better for the Bucs than people would have thought considering the injury he was coming off of.

Bonzai – My estimate is that the Bucs have around $44-million in cap space still, that is assuming Brate is getting his money this year and not next year, so he’s at $7m in my estimate, then giving a 2nd round tender to Hump (which is about $2) and Grimes at $10 and Glanton at $750k, Barber at a base salary and Fitz at $5 (totally a guess since the number isn’t out there).

It could cause more Qbs to be taken 1-6 and therefore create a better chance at a Chub, Barkley or Nelson falling to #7.

Thing about that is Koetter doesn’t know how to run good running plays. I don’t think I saw him run one check down play last year. He says he doesn’t like screens. And my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE of all Koetter’s bullsh#t calls of all last year is the single back set for third and short that he constantly ran with his very sizable Doug Martin. Team’s knew exactly what was coming every time. They would stack all their LBs and we would get stuffed every time. This is also on Jameis for not calling the audible but that was just a stupid f-ing call to give to the QB so many times.

More like $7-8M max for rookie contracts including UDFAs.
And we don’t have that much room at all left. $10M at most for free agents and that’s before bringing back McDonald, McClain and Tandy for about $4-5M combined.
Licht intends to sign Marpet and Kwon to long term deals and both will be in the $8-10M per range or close to that. Also good chance they try and work out a favorable deal for Donovan Smith this year as well IMO – That’s another $10M.
If I’m right on Licht wanting to extend those 3 players this year – then we don’t have very much left to work with without releasing some guys like Ayers, Gholston, Sweezy etc.

Evans is an animal and we got him locked up for years to come.
Grimes is an old man and stud. You can thank Vernon Heargraves for the exceptional need we have at CB, and Grimes has been very solid for us.
All really good moves. We need to keep these kinds of players, as they are WORTH IT.

Because you draft the bpa. In 2010, dominick drafted arreliuos benn in the 2nd round because the bucs needed wrs. 3 picks later gronk was picked. Do you remember 2 yrs ago when brate got hurt the last 3 games of the season and jameis had no other tight end to throw to? We missed the playoffs because we had no depth at tight end? Do you remember the bucs drafted kwon in the 4th round eventhough they signed bruce carter to be the mlb? The bucs had a 2nd round grade on kwon. He is now a pro bowler. He should have been a pro bowler 2 years ago. The bucs drafted beckwith last year as the last pick in the third round. Bucs had a 2nd round grade on him. Kwon got hurt early in the season and beckwith filled in tremendously at mlb in his absense. Do you remember the mlb the last time kwon was hurt? You pick the bpa period. Oj and brate together is a great problem to have.

Do you remember the last time adam humphries had to be the #2 receiver? Mike evans was quadripled teamed. I like humphries for his work ethic but picking godwin in the third round (bpa) paid dividends when djax got hurt the last 3 games of the season. Injuries happen and thats why i laugh at the fans/media that says trade djax. If you trade djax, one injury to evans or godwin means we are depending on hump as #2 and freddie martino as the #3. That means fans like you would be killing licht for not having wr depth. We have depth there due to bpa

1st actually – Licht said in an interview awhile back that they had Kwon rated as the 28th best player in the 2015 draft. In fact all 4 of our 2015 picks (Winston, D. Smith, Marpet and Kwon) carried 1st rd grades on the Buccaneers big board.

We havent been any good in a long time. But there are many reasons. Changing coaches every 2 years, allen and dominick drafts sucked, the bucs giving up four 1st round picks and two 2nd round picks in a span of three years. Everybody remembers giving up two 1st and two 2nds for gruden in 2002. Do you remember giving up 2 first for keyshawn in 2000? Afrter the bowl win, owners spent the less out of any team until 2012 due to manu. Think about this….in the 10 years of allen and dominick, there have only been 3 drafted players that was deserving of a 2nd contract…gmc, davin joseph and david. I believe talib as well but 4 players in 10 years? I know some will argue gmc didnt deserve one but he did at least earn a 2nd contract. There are many reasons why we have lost for so long. Clayton did not deserve or earn a 2nd contract. Good teams build through the draft. Smart teams dont over spend.
Thats why i like the bpa model. Thats how bellichek drafts. Licht learned that from him. Bellichek will cut you in one year if you suck. I dont know if you notice, but licht will cut you in one year if you suck. He learned that from bill. Bellicheck does not over spend for players. Licht learned that from bill. I just want to see the bucs keep some consistency. In four drafts under licht, there are at least 12 players who at least earned 2nd contracts……winston, kwon, evans, brate, hump, marpet, smith, beckwith, godwin, oj, evans. He!! Asj is about to get paid. Calin klay contributes a lot to the panthers. Licht can draft. I say be patient and keep stacking chips ie players in the draft. So draft well ie bpa and not for need. Thats whats pays off in the long run.

Great stuff. That goes to my last post. Licht knows how to draft. I know many will give him flack for roberto but at the end of the day thats just another miss like 70% of the rest of the draft is.

Licht also said they had 1st rd grades on Hargreaves, Spence and Aguayo as well. Which I guess explains why they jumped up to the end of the 2nd to draft a kicker (eye roll)
The Aguayo rating was obviously a miscalculation. We’ll have to see if VH3 can redeem himself this year and hope that Spence can stay healthy…

This is the best work Licht has done , I would immediately let people know he is avail. For a younger stud corner , I believe the Bears would be open to moving Fuller . This contract makes Brate very very attractive to other teams , his value may never be higher and Corner is a much much much bigger need.
Really Like Brate but you gotta build the team.
I would do the same w L David and Kwon and go LB first round and upgrade corner via trade. There are Two LB better than them that are plug and play and won’t miss a beat as a rookie.
The trade would also have to be a sign and trade as I would want the corner under no less than a four year contract.
The Goal is to win the Super Bowl and this is how you do it !!!

I swear there is a crap load of “Bucs fans” that don’t watch the games. Brate is easily our biggest red zone threat. He finds a way to score. Good signing now get some d linemen. As much as I hate suh as a person he’s still a monster. Sign him and a de that’s worth half a crap and we will be ok. Throw in another solid cb and a rb and better yet. I still feel the main problem last year was they got cocky from the hype and just expected to win. Plus not having a kicker that can make a xpt didn’t help lol

YES, I now have BRADLEY CHUBB mocked to the BUCS … seriously
I thought for sure the Broncos would draft a QB but now that they have agreed to sign Keenum, I think they trade down as their team has tons of holes.
I also have had Chubb mocked to the Colts forever but the Bills have a massive arsenal of picks and recently improved their arsenal by swapping the #21 for the #12 so I think they can give a king’s ransom offer to the Colts for that 3rd pick and as the Colts have one of the most talent-bare rosters in the entire NFL, I think they accept the Bills trade proposal.
So, I now honestly have all of the top 4 QBs going in the first 6 picks, along with Saquon Barkley and Quenton Nelson and BRADLEY CHUBB falling to the Bucs at #7

Yes I am saying the bucs would be a better team with a young cornerback like Kyle Fuller( 4 yr contract)and R Smith from Georgia and any two of the three than they are drafting another V Hardgraves or Spence w David ,Alexander and Brate .
Yes 100 percent that’s what I’m saying not even a second thought !!! Don’t forget this takes into account , age, resigning, cap, offensive talent and defensive holes .
