What To Do At Safety
March 11th, 2018A year ago, it was painfully clear how the Bucs felt about their safeties.
Oh, they liked fan favorite Chris Conte enough to re-sign him. And apparently liked Keith Tandy too, but maybe not that much.
So what did Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht do? He signed two safeties. First, it was J.J. Wilcox, who Licht promptly trade to Pittsburgh immediately after signing T.J. Ward one week before the season was scheduled to open (but Hurricane Irma had other plans).
Well, clearly, Ward and Wilcox are gone and the current Bucs safeties are the very same ones Licht had when he went safety hunting. So if Licht didn’t exactly like his safeties then, it stands to reason he doesn’t like them much now. Will Licht address this position in free agency or the draft?
Joe gets feedback from fans who want Licht to grab one of the top two safeties in the draft, Minkah Fitzpatrick or Derwin James.
(Yes, the NFL folks Joe has talked to stated Fitzpatrick is more safety than corner.)
Joe really has no opinion of either other than James. His knee surgery scares Joe. James was not the same player since suffering a knee injury early in the 2016 season, when he was a freaking sideline-to-sideline gamewrecker.
If the Bucs don’t believe they can address running back, defensive end or guard at No. 7, then they need to find a quarterback-hungry team to trade down with and perhaps fill three those spots in the first two rounds with Marcus Davenport, Sony Michel and Will Hernandez.
March 11th, 2018 at 10:09 am
That would be a nice haul indeed!
March 11th, 2018 at 10:10 am
Assuming no trade and Chubb and Nelson are gone I would be all for drafting James (also assuming we sign a good corner in FA). He is an extremely versatile player that can help in the run game and cover. Having two young safeties would be nice to build off.
March 11th, 2018 at 10:11 am
trade down bucs have too many holes
March 11th, 2018 at 10:13 am
Licht thought Ward (with his former “Pro Bowl” credentials) would be an upgrade.
I think most everyone thought that when he came available.
We were all wrong. Should have just hung onto Wilcox instead.
I understand why Licht brought Ward in – it just didn’t work out.
An interesting question though is – Why is TJ Ward still on the Bucs roster??
March 11th, 2018 at 10:16 am
Agree with your last paragraph btw Joe.
If Chubb, Nelson and Barkley are all off the board at pick #7 – the Bucs need to trade down if at all possible.
Minkah Fitzpatrick is NOT a good pick nor value at #7 IMO.
I would take James over Minkah at 7 if it came to that…
March 11th, 2018 at 10:20 am
Sean Taylor, RIP, is not in this draft. That is the only safety worth of a top ten pick. How’d passing on Keuchly for Mark Barron treat us?
If Nelson, Chubb, and Barkley are gone then I pray for a trade down.
March 11th, 2018 at 10:20 am
I believe trading down with Buffalo would be the best option but if we can’t and Chub and Barkley are gone, I would love to see James in our back field. Everyone seems to favor Fitzpatrick but James is more of a SS (which is what we need) plus he can play corner and rush the passer. Fitzpatrick is considered more of a FS (which we have in Evans).
March 11th, 2018 at 10:21 am
Trade down with Bills for their #21-22 picks in the first round and their 2nd round and next year’s 2nd and 6th.
March 11th, 2018 at 10:22 am
If it came down to Derwin James or Minkah Fitzpatrick it would be a tough call. Fitzpatrick is the better player, but James fits the type of safety we need more.
March 11th, 2018 at 10:22 am
Defensive Alabama players scare me seems they don’t really boom in the nfl
As fast as LSU players
March 11th, 2018 at 10:31 am
I’m not all in with Fitzpatrick as i think its Chubb and Nelson are 1,2 but are you guys telling me you wouldn’t want an Ed Reed type player on this defense for the 8-10 years? That is what he is projected as and you guys, Joe included, act like he would not have an impact. Instead you want a small school defensive end, a split time RB, and a small school guard. To be clear I would take those guys as well but not over an Ed Reed level talent.
March 11th, 2018 at 10:39 am
@ ndog
When you say ed reed level talent, you mean derwin james correct?
@ stevek
Eric berry says hi
March 11th, 2018 at 10:46 am
CBs and safeties will look much better with a pass rush, if Licht ever brings guys in. For a guy whose job depends on it he sure is being patient. If they traded back and somehow got those 3 I’d be doing cartwheels on columbus dr. My guess is Licht loses the patience he somehow has right now and goes trade up crazy again.
March 11th, 2018 at 10:48 am
Webster I am a FSU guy and I saw him look bad to many times to put him in the Ed Reed catagory. See NC State game as one glaring example plus since his knee injury he just did not look as good as before. That being he could end up being his old self but that a big risk at 7.
March 11th, 2018 at 10:48 am
If we could trade down and get 2 first round picks I’d be happy with drafting Michel and Hernandez both. I know it doesn’t address our defensive needs but man that would be good for Jameis and take some pressure off of him.
March 11th, 2018 at 10:48 am
I’d be so happy with those last three guys you named on this article
March 11th, 2018 at 10:51 am
Ed Reed and Derwin James aren’t even the same type of safety. Dont see why they would be compared.
March 11th, 2018 at 10:56 am
If the big 3 are gone and trade down options aren’t enticing enough D. James should be the pick. Don’t listen to Joe look for yourself he has lost nothing after the injury. Nobody credible thinks that and the stats and comparative 40 and shuddle times or eye test proves it.
March 11th, 2018 at 11:09 am
Please, no safety at #7. Trade down or take Via or the CB from Ohio State. Name slips my mind.
March 11th, 2018 at 11:10 am
Safety?????? I thought we were going to fix the “real” problem, the TRENCHES!!!! No one is going to mention Mount Vea???????? I thought we wanted the Bad-azz football team!!!!!!!!! I would even put him in at RB on goal line with a 3 TE Set!!! did anyone see his highschool tape!!!!! Dude was a RB and had wiggle!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Keep focused sheep!!!!! There are smokescreens abound!!!!!!!!!
GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!
March 11th, 2018 at 11:13 am
Just remembered CB Ohio State Denzel Ward.
March 11th, 2018 at 11:24 am
DRC just got released by the Giants. He would be a nice addition
March 11th, 2018 at 11:29 am
Licht didn’t like his Safety’s and traded for Wilcox and Ward. We all know that didn’t fair to well. Sat Tandy all season and went 5 & 12, we all know that didn’t fair to well. Missed out on some people already this offseason that would have helped and that hasn’t faired to well . I don’t think Jason knows what the hell he’s doing. TMax may be right on his 4 & 12 season prediction for the upcoming 2018 season. Wish it were already over and Licht, Koetter and Smith all get fired and we get our own 49ers GM John Lynch……Derrick Brooks as our Defensive Coordinator and Warren Sapp as our Head Coach LOL. Maybe then those upped Ticket Prices will be bought and the Galzers can save their own asses and the Bucs.
March 11th, 2018 at 11:30 am
Hope springs eternal.
March 11th, 2018 at 11:32 am
@TOM exactly. He’s a lockdown corner which I think would be a good pick in top 10.
March 11th, 2018 at 11:35 am
@ ndog
You are forgetting that james will be one more year removed from that injury when the season starts. Im an fsu guy and from everything im reading, james killed the combine and minkah not so much. They are comparing james to eric berry who was picked #5 in the draft. All you people talking about not picking a safety in the top 10 are clueless. If you can draft a stud/perennial all pro at any position in the top 10, you do it. As for the combine james ran a 4.47. He put up 21 reps. Berry put up 19 and chancellor put up 22.
James had a 40 inch vert and 11 foot broad jump which was basically identical to jalen ramsey 41 inch vert and 11 foot 3 inch broad jump. In comparison, james jumped 7 inches higher and a whole foot longer in the broad jump over minkah fitzpatrick. This is important because minkah’s athleticism and explosiveness has come into question. Players who went in the top 10 with similar combine numbers as fitzpatrick are the great dee milner and justin gilbert.
Alabama defensive players are a concern due to the overall talent and everyone looks special. One thing i do know is james measurables compare favorably to the great dbs already in the nfl. When i see him play combined with his performance at the combine, its a no brainer. I understand the nc state game where he seemed to loaf a bit but my question is how much of that was the sorry competetition he was playing against and he his ream having a down year? It was not a good look but during the big time games, he came to play. Fsu players ie jameis, telvin smith, xaviar rhodes, ramsey etc are built for prime time. The bucs need prime time players and james fits that mold.
March 11th, 2018 at 11:38 am
I’m not sure about Davenport but trading down and filling more holes is intriguing. A stud DT like Vea, Payne or Hurst is a better choice than a project DE.
March 11th, 2018 at 11:40 am
DRC from this area he may come to tampa
March 11th, 2018 at 11:43 am
Derwin james 6-3 215 lbs.
Kam chancellor 6-3 230 lbs.
Derwin had 84 tlks and 11 pass defensed. Seeing how the bucs need help against the run as well, i think his skill set translates.
March 11th, 2018 at 11:43 am
All these guys wil have claimed to have wanted Derwin James in a year or two when he’s balling in the NFL but Webster and I will remember the doubters.
March 11th, 2018 at 11:47 am
There are solid strong safeties in free agency like Eric Reid and Tre Boston as well as some in the draft other than Derwin James; I’m not worried about the SS position
March 11th, 2018 at 11:48 am
Sherman just signed with the 9ers…..go bucs
March 11th, 2018 at 11:50 am
Highest rated player, besides QB and TE obviously. This team needs talent, bottom line, I don’t care where on the field. O-line, D-line, CB, WR, RB, S, LB…..just put good players on the roster and make a plan on how to use them.
I for one don’t want to see them go drunken sailor on the first day of free agency. Bring in one or two major difference makers and then let the dust clear a little bit and fill some depth holes. This team needs depth more than anything. Our two and three deep is not good enough to last a full season.
March 11th, 2018 at 11:53 am
I think Licht signed Wilcox to replace MacDougald (should have never let him go). When the opportunity to get Ward suddenly happened, he jumped on it.
It was a bad move, because he scrambled to get Ward before anyone else, without looking into the player properly.
Like most Bucs fans, he saw a name that was well known and wanted him…regardless if it was a good idea or not. And pretty much most fans here (not all) liked the move…and they criticized the ones who did not. Trolls eat anything but crow apparently.

it is tough and can be deceiving because they are surrounded by other excellent players often matched up against typical college talent
March 11th, 2018 at 12:01 pm
@ bonzai
And then we will have idiot trolls posting the glazers do not want any talent on the team smdh
March 11th, 2018 at 12:04 pm
As to what I feel we should do at safety this year?
Bradley McDougald is a free agent this year, and he did well starting in Seattle. IF he is permitted to hit the streets, which Rotoworld hints that he will not be, then the Bucs should bring him back.
Eric Reid is only 26. He’s a free agent option.
Here’s the thing…there are actually teams who are refusing to bring in players who knelt during the anthem (Texans for example). That means players that normally might be harder to get will be available. Reid is one such player.
He’s young. He’s got talent. Health MIGHT be a concern. He was out a few weeks with a knee injury.
But we also have the draft…and frankly I think Justin Evans is getting better. Entering his second year.
So really, we could ride with Evans and Conte this year and worry about Safety next year.
Pass Rush and Cornerback are the important things this year. And a Running Back if we can get a good one later in the draft.
March 11th, 2018 at 12:05 pm
@ nflnut
You said solid. Im talking special. The bucs have had and have their share of solid players. Chris conte is solid. If the bucs can have their version of earl thomas and kam chancellor, why not? This team needs talent. The more talent you have, the more you can mask weaknesses.
March 11th, 2018 at 12:10 pm
Doesn’t anyone see the problem here? Remember when lovie couldn’t find a safety good enough year after year in Chicago? Now we have the same issue with a different coach running the same defense. If Ward couldn’t stand out that should tell you something. Soft 10 to 15 yard coverage in cover two zone will never work and the team will be below .500 every year unless they play a schedule full of crap teams who like to throw ints.
Fix the defense and this team is in the playoffs. It’s scheme and coaching not players. Buckner is about to be scratching his head on the sidelines wondering how he was so good in Arizona and now can’t get to the qb here (Jay Hayes)
I have a feeling Koetter and Smith are both gone after this season and Licht gets to hand pick his next staff
March 11th, 2018 at 12:11 pm
Out first two picks MUST be spent on the defensive . Choices are:
DE Bradley Chubb
NT Vita Vea
DE Marcus Davenport
DB Minkah Fitzpatrick
LB Tremanine Edmunds
DE Harold Landry
CB Isaiah Oliver
DE Sam Hubbard
LB Leighton Vander
LB Rashad Evans (possible DE?)
March 11th, 2018 at 12:13 pm
@ bonzai
I disagree. You draft best player available. Its already known that this is not a deep draft for pass rushers. Why draft one if a safety or olineman is the better prospect? The rockstar did that in 2010. Wide receiver was a need so he picked arreliuos benn in the 2nd round. Three picks later was the gronk. Stay true to your draft board and dont reach for need. That is how licht has picked supposedly steals in kwon, beckwith, godwin by staying true to his board and not reaching. You will have more hits than misses that way.

If the bucs have all these solid players and cancer93 is a star not to mention all the great free agents you say bucs have signed please explain why it has not translated to a single meaningful win in well over a decade.. you would think all these great players you mention could pull off at least one meaningful win per DECADE

Did you intentionally leave derwin james off your list or was that a mistake?

DE Bradley Chubb
are folks aware of BC’s troubling slow 3 cone drill time at the combine ?….careful what you wish for
March 11th, 2018 at 12:15 pm
@webster
“this is not a deep draft for pass rushers”
Because it is not deep, that is why you must take one earlier…where they are actually available. Because the talent drops off in later rounds.
March 11th, 2018 at 12:16 pm
Although, I wouldn’t mind getting Ogbonnia Okoronkwo (DE) later in the draft, if feasible.
March 11th, 2018 at 12:16 pm
Bonzi and Webster
If this team had the talent you delusional optimists suggest they would not be the most embarassing team in league and own the worst winning percentage in nfl history
March 11th, 2018 at 12:20 pm
@ tmax
Again you are pushing for the bucs to sign tremaine johnson a lesser talent than they have signed in the past. They could sign your no all pro no pro bowl player and still suck next year. And you will be here next year lying saying the bucs do not want talent. And for the record, you can go back and look at my post prior to the start of the season. I was one of the few posters who tried to warn the fan base that the bucs are not as good as local and national media was saying. So no im not just a fan boy but i also will not sit by while you post lies
March 11th, 2018 at 12:22 pm
@webster
I left James off on purpose…though if he were to fall to the second round I might bend a bit.
Pass rush is not our only issue on the defensive line. So is run stopping.
I just feel that of all our needs, Safety is among them, but less important than say, DE, DT, CB and RB.
It is still a need, but if we fix the line, the safeties we have will get better results.
And Evans might become that great Safety we need. Development could make the difference in this instant. Conte? I know. Solid should not be good enough…but it can buy us a year.
I know, this article is about safety…and I’m all for addressing it in free agency…buy time or fix it that way. But because of the topic of the article, people are jumping on the safety bandwagon. We have bigger needs.
I believe in Best Player Available…just not strictly. It should be at a position of need. If the BPA is, say, quarterback, that would be a wasted pick.
So even in BPA, you go by need.
And no way will James have a bigger impact that Vea.
March 11th, 2018 at 12:24 pm
@ bonzai
Value has to meet talent. Again, i am not drafting a d end in the second round if i have sony michael rated higher. Thats when teams get in trouble. I know d end is a big need but the bucs can also use a talented running back
March 11th, 2018 at 12:26 pm
@Webster
Just ignore TMax. He’s a puppy among dogs yapping for attention.
One more point I should mention though…I think Jason Licht and Dirk Koetter are pigeon-holed here. They must fix the defensive line this off season, and there is nothing out there in free agency. Their jobs are on the line, and if they go safety with the first pick, they may as well pack their bags.
So I thing they’ll go DL even if they have to reach a little.
March 11th, 2018 at 12:28 pm
The way I see it is this: if both players will be great, then you take the one you need most. It doesn’t matter if player A is a little better than player B. As long as Player B can excel at his position and fix the need.
March 11th, 2018 at 12:30 pm
btw, Sherman is gone to the 49ers (thankfully)
March 11th, 2018 at 12:31 pm
I love John Lynch, but he is making some big rookie GM mistakes. He’s going all out on free agents and trades. Just like Licht did his first year.
March 11th, 2018 at 12:34 pm
@ bonzai
I am not sure why you guys are high on vea. Outvof respect for this website, i wont mention the publication that first started pushing vea but that is just ridiculous. The browns just traded the vea clone to new england yesterday. I have not seen one mock draft that has vea in the top 10 and many have him in the lower teens. Since the combine, james is in the top 10 and a few have the bucs drafting him. Again, im about aquiring talent and i mean bonafide talent. Vea does not strike me as bonafide. I do not care what that other publication was selling. And there is no way james makes it to the 2nd round. I dont know how much research you have done on him, but you need to look again.

March 11th, 2018 at 12:45 pm
Clearly you like James, and that’s fine. But I just looked at all the mocks on NFL.Com and out of 8+, only one has the Bucs taking James.
Not that it matters. If he is the guy you want, root to get him. That’s the fun of all this.
March 11th, 2018 at 12:46 pm
Joe if you think he hasn’t been the same player, you haven’t watched FSU football this year. He wasn’t asked to blitz nearly enough as his first year and he still had two picks and quite a few passes defensed. As for the knee, how are you worried about a knee and then want to sign beat up guys coming off multiple surgeries like Richard Sherman. Did you miss the 4.4 he ran and the 41′ vert? He’s practically tow years removed from the surgery. Knee surgery might as well be a sprained toe these days.James is a stud and he will be a all pro, book it.

Not working, TMax.
March 11th, 2018 at 12:56 pm
Folks who see Minkah Fitzpatrick as ONLY a safety are missing his true value. Not only has he played Safety AND Corner, but he excelled at BOTH. Also showed exceptional LEADERSHIP while at Bama, something that the Bucs sorely need. The flexibility provided by a player like that shouldn’t be undervalued. Excellent size (6’1″ & 203 lbs) with very good cover skills. I wouldn’t hesitate to take Minkah at #7 if he makes it down that far.
March 11th, 2018 at 12:59 pm

If we go safety at 7 I like James…I just don’t trust Bama players…remember Dee Milliner…I’d much rather take Ward out of OSU over Fitzpatrick…
That said, I hope we can address gaurd and corner in FA and if Chubb, Nelson, and Barkley are gone take James…he’s fast enough to cover WR’s, big enough to cover TE’s, and physical enough to assist in run defense, I’ve even seen him return KIck offs and punts…also, because of FSU’s DC incompetence he wasn’t use to his fill potential…People are comparing him to Ed Reed but he’s closer to Sean Taylor; play maker with freakish size and speed for a safety only difference is James has good ball skills Taylor had amazing ball skills, there will never be another Sean Taylor

Down to trade down. Love Minkah but S is just too risky and high for 7. Wouldn’t pick a OG at 7 either but Nelson is just too much of a sure thing. Sign Kenny Vacaro in FA and either Nelson, Chubb, or Barkley at 7 or trade down.

i can fix society too… sterilization at birth for all and legalized abortions to the age of 17 to weed out the week. make people earn the right to reproduce and make sure the young keep straight or face the consequences.
March 11th, 2018 at 2:51 pm
no man…I see the mess and can handle extreme measures…just don’t know what the viable solutions are….new HC…new GM and all the obvious short comings and over paid under performers…sure is easy to say what is wrong….not nearly as easy fixing…

glazers need to relinquish control of football operations. they need to bring in a successful executive to call all shots. An executive with full power one that cancer93 or the other pansy arses can’t go crying to the glazers about. inmates have been running the asylum too long. first the glazers want discipline they get discipline then cancer93 and his band of cry babies go running to glazers. glazers give them big softee bad character lovie smith and they repay glazers with some of the flattest performances known to professional sports. the blowouts oh the blowouts. every offseason for the last 8 years big cry baby goes on this me first camera and soical media rants starting with his yearly meaningless pro bowl appearance. next a few weeks before season will be his next pathetic press conference filled with excuses and BS.
this is executive needs to be a proven winner not some ex underachieving has been player or coach like 55 or dungy…. hiring those guys is simply just stupid talk neither are qualified to take out the trash for a nfl front office much less run one…

Actually I like Tamx’s takes…and can tell the difference between his serious posts and sarcastic incite full frustration….agree one G’Boyz stick to counting money and turn EVERYTHING over to a franchise manager,or whatever you want to call the guy above GM….

Derwin was definetly the same player after surgery. Keep in mind Jimbo tanked after losing Francois and Kelly was probably the worse DC in all of college football and didn’t use James like he did the two previous years. We will be sorry if we pass him up. I guarantee it.

“they’ll be gone with Jameis…if #3 can’t hit his WR’s in stride and connect with the deep balls he throws….did you see the QB’s in the play offs ?”
Yeah even Wentz got hit in stride and he’s the QB. Still love Jameis though.

Boy, Kelly was godawful.

Just saying that we have Too many needs to trade Up for One player that “may or may not” change the game IF as a rookie they can stay healthy at the next level. I think that is a fair outlook.

Some people wanting vita vea, a damn run stopper with no pass rush moves that would be good for 30 plays a game in the Tampa heat.go loom at his film and stats then go to youtube and watch him get handled one on one .power alone don’t work in the nfl,one guy on here saying he would put him at running back on goal line situations LMAO. Idiots!!
March 11th, 2018 at 5:34 pm
You already have a one dimensional player in will gholston!
March 11th, 2018 at 5:35 pm
Go watch his tape people!
March 11th, 2018 at 6:28 pm
The people who watch Vita Vea and come away thinking all he has is power are the people that need to go watch the tape.
A guy as big as he is shouldnt be as quick and explosive as he is. Dude is a freak for a guy his size.
March 12th, 2018 at 1:08 am
Joey,
Definitely the guy is a freak athlete but what John points out is not about how athletic he is but rather how many times that his freakish athletic ability wasn’t enough to beat skilled offensive lineman. Danny Shelton is also a freak, played at the same school, He’s not been able to convert the athletic ability into a superior player.
I’ve seen vea up close a couple of times and He is strong and fast but He wasn’t a great technician. Mainly, because He can win with the speed and size advantage He has over most opponent’s. If a d coordinator will exploit those traits initially while simultaneously coaching up his technique then there’s tremendous upside.

after the combine and passing medicals how could james knee injury scare you ? & he wasn’t the same player because he wasn’t used the same way , his freshman year he was used almost exclusively lined up in the box and on the line of scrimmage this year he was used more as a single high safety & he was lock down in man defense , him & fitzpatrick are the kinda guys you draft and they immediately change the mentality of your defense . that’s why we need to draft them
