GMC: I’m Staying
March 7th, 2018Yesterday’s article by respected Mike Sando of BSPN, noting he vetted a rumor that the Bucs are shopping stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and someone — or some people — in NFL circles thinks it has a kernel of truth to it, spread through social media last night quicker than a Highlands County brushfire.
And word reached GMC himself. He took to Twitter to shoot down any speculation that he may be shipped out of Tampa Bay.
@Geraldini93: Well well well free agency on its way and the draft in the near future will cause people to write anything. TRADE……….. IM NOT LEAVING!!
Joe would wager that if there were any talks of trading GMC among general managers, GMC’s agent would know of this and, of course, then GMC would be tipped off.
It just seemed odd as heck to Joe that a team in a win-now mode (or should be in a win-now mode) would try to ship out one of the game’s best defensive tackles to rebuild the defensive line.
Rebuild for who, the next coach and the next general manager?
March 7th, 2018 at 12:09 am
Trade McCoy, D-Jax and Ryan Griffin along with a future 1st to the Browns for their 1st and 4th
Three picks in the top ten of the draft would heal a lot of the Buc’s problems
A truly bold move
March 7th, 2018 at 12:10 am
lmao…. Yall got trolled…
March 7th, 2018 at 12:12 am
I wish you’d stay in your gap! Bye Felicia
March 7th, 2018 at 12:17 am
When Koetter said this very team was a “bad team” I believed it.
Joe
GMC doesn’t have it any more he knows. He can’t take criticism. GMC is breaking down mentally. There is some strange beef going on with him a media guy that looks very childish on his part. I didn’t make a judgement for my distaste of GMC and now this? Dude has thin skin
March 7th, 2018 at 12:20 am
GMC needs to stop reading the jerkoffs on social media.
March 7th, 2018 at 12:25 am
For a 2nd and 4th round pick I’d make that move in a heartbeat. They could bring in Sheldon Richardson, Mo Wilkerson (on an incentive based contract) and still draft a DE in the 2nd with the acquired draft pick and possibly entertain a trade for JPP or Vernon from NY for a 3rd or the 4th rd pick acquired thru the trade. NY may be looking to free up some cap space.
March 7th, 2018 at 12:28 am
Get GMC some help! Buy an edge rusher, draft Vera Via. Make it happen Licht!
March 7th, 2018 at 12:32 am
GMC was definetly no the problem on defense last year.. but if u can get a cb and a pick for him do ittt!! Or should I say a ransome if not don’t waste the time keep him and out some dude next to him that can actually get off the ball as fast as he does or maybe an edge rusher so he’s not getting doubles every time. LEGO bucnation be smart Licht
March 7th, 2018 at 12:35 am
Yeah. He’s gone.
March 7th, 2018 at 12:38 am
gp … Cleveland hangs up the phone laughing.
The best that package would bring is a 2nd and 3rd imho … the #1 and #4 … you’d need to include Jameis … you are completely over-valuing GMC and Djax … and Griffin has no “value” at all … none.
March 7th, 2018 at 12:38 am
A 2nd and a 4th = GMC GONE
March 7th, 2018 at 1:41 am
And who will replace him 1 of you keyboard Wanna B GM’s yeah highly doubt it find something to do with your pathetic time besides screwing with real BUC fans and PLAYERS
March 7th, 2018 at 1:47 am
Raiders are looking for a DT and they started the McCoy rumor themselves to try to drive the market price down. I’m sure it happens a lot this time of year.
March 7th, 2018 at 1:59 am
Not a McCoy hater, but not a biased fan-boy either.
McCoy doesn’t seem like an old guy…
However, this should be no surprise due to numerous injuries, lack of “impact” when healthy (stats are for losers, losers) and the fact he’s never been surrounded by real talent and veteran leaders.
Oh and also the Sucs have been completely irrelevant for Gerald’s entire career.
The Sucs can still have the worst defense in the league without #93.
McCoy deserves to be traded to a team that has a real chance. He’s earned that much. Consummate teammate and professional.
If Lchtmyb*lls can get some extra picks and dump Gerald’s salary, then he can sign even more bum FAs and still lose his job in 2019.
March 7th, 2018 at 2:22 am
Honestly, If we were to get a 2nd rounder for Gerald, I’d take it in a heart beat.
That’s great value for a diminishing 30 year old. After registering 9.5 sacks in 2013, McCoy had two back to back years with 8.5 sacks in ’14 and ’15, 7 sacks in 2016, and 6 last year. This is not some kind of fluke trend.
Every year it seems that Gerald gets a little bit more dinged up than the previous year, constantly having to play through a myriad of injuries.
Being no hater of what I view to be a very good DT, easily the 3rd best the Bucs have ever had after Selmon and Sapp, I have to admit that a 2018 second rounder would be very good value for approaching the end stages of his career.
March 7th, 2018 at 3:16 am
Shaqeem Griffin, if given the chance to play DE, on passing downs,
would fininsh the season with 7-10 sacks.
He has one the quickest first steps in the NCAA, he has sub 4.4 speed, he is relentless, he has a nasty spin move.
Put Noah Spence and Shaqeem Griffin at DE on 3rd and long, and eatch the sacks tally up.
Shaqeem Griffin needs to be a Buccaneer.
He can play DE, WLB, SS, and Nickle, plus he can be a great special teamer.
Shaqeem Griffin to Tampa Bay!!
March 7th, 2018 at 3:51 am
Teacherman777
I hope you are being sarcastic. Im sure if given the chance he could return kicks and punts, fill in as a rotatioal running back and probably be our starting kicker as well haha
March 7th, 2018 at 4:07 am
A 2nd rounder for GMC is definitely worth considering at least
March 7th, 2018 at 4:25 am
The soft ice cream man thinks he runs the team now with his request for signings and statements on social media. All the more reason to unload this cancer. Shut his mouth and show who the boss is….
March 7th, 2018 at 5:40 am
Comments like ” I have to admit that a 2018 second rounder would be very good value for approaching the end stages of his career” are humorous. So now you have a BIG hole in the middle of your (already hurting) DLine and you’ve accomplished what? Oh ya, managed to give Jason Licht another 2nd rounder to spend. Surely we can get a better kicker this time. But let’s say he actually did draft a DT to replace GMC. There’s only 3 or 4 REALLY good ones in this year’s draft … not gonna get one of those with a 2nd-rounder from Oakland.
March 7th, 2018 at 5:44 am
Win now? What are you smoking? No pass rush! No cbs! 1 safety! No run game ! No Center! One guard! And America’s turnover machine!
March 7th, 2018 at 6:05 am
I’d take a box of Cracker Jacks for him. What’s with his twitter name Geraldini? That’s a girls name.
March 7th, 2018 at 6:18 am
Code for: “I ain’t going to play for that meanie in Oakland who has expectations! I’m quite comfortable here adding to the 100 mil the Bucs have dished me. A couple more years of 8 figure salary “top off” and I good!”
March 7th, 2018 at 6:21 am
You make the assumptions and then build theories around them. No one knows if this is a real ‘do or die’ season for Licht. We think it is but we don’t know for sure. Maybe, just maybe the Glaziers know ‘do or die’ doesn’t really work and doesn’t serve the bucs interests. Maybe they are not dumb and they told Licht to not worry about it so he can HANDLE TEAM NEEDS and do what’s good for the team instead of gumbling on his job.
Regardless, GMC should be traded, time to move on. Professionally and culture-wise.
March 7th, 2018 at 6:24 am
I would take a 4th rounder and throw in Hawaiian Bus’s hula skirt to get rid of Ol’ Softie93.
March 7th, 2018 at 6:27 am
@Defense Rules
Incase you weren’t aware, this is a pretty solid draft class for interior Dlineman. we could literally use the 2nd rounder we get to draft a DT. Taven Bryan looks like a solid 3 tech.
Like it or not, we aren’t going to the Superbowl this upcoming season. We had the worst defense in the league last year with Gerald McCoy, we can do that without him, while also freeing up 13 million to bring in vital pieces like Trumaine Johnson.
March 7th, 2018 at 6:28 am
And he’s certainly not going to get more valuable. So unloading him now for a 2nd rounder is the most we’ll probably ever be able to get for him.
March 7th, 2018 at 6:45 am
Last I looked, this is about Winning or Losing.
You are what your record says you are.
With GMC what has this team done the most of?
We mostly lose 10-12 games a year with or without him.
What difference did or does he make. Answer: None.
Granted, they wasted his prime years by not building the line.
However, he alone will not save this line now, at his age.
Trade him now for a couple draft pics and build this line younger and for the future.
In no-way is this team “close” to winning anything.
March 7th, 2018 at 6:57 am
Let us look at this another way!!!! This would not be the first time that an agent for a player leaked a trade rumor, and the player innocently claims they love their current team and wants to stay!!!!!!!!!
Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!
Make the trade!!!!!!!!!! if the Bucs go all in for blowing up the D-line and serious rebuild it, the “real” fans will give the coaching staff a 2 year pass!!!!!!
GO Bucs!!!!!!
March 7th, 2018 at 7:00 am
If he’s not crying on the sideline he’s injured! Now spends his days arguing with fans and MEDIA! He’s only a legend in his own mind and is proving it now. How many seasons was he healthy the entire year? Maybe ONE! What percentage of games has he played healthy? 50%? Good player but too much talk not enough action. How many games did he take over his entire career? A couple?
March 7th, 2018 at 7:04 am
New D line coach probably wants players with fire coming out of their A$$ instead of soft serve.
March 7th, 2018 at 7:16 am
Agreed Realist.
March 7th, 2018 at 7:21 am
If you’re drafting Dline, you keep McCoy to mentor them. I would trade a 2nd rounder in a heart beat for a probowl DT, DE. Its not a good idea for us. We need to accumulate talent on the line, not ship it off for peanuts
March 7th, 2018 at 7:31 am
To quote dikemper from yesterday’s Ira podcast. “Yea he’s so good that the Bucs have the worst Dline in the NFL”
March 7th, 2018 at 7:44 am
I’m reading these comments “well now you have a big hole in your defensive line!”
Dummy. They were 32nd WITH him.
March 7th, 2018 at 7:46 am
Quick name two things associated with McCoy: LOSING & INJURIES
The only two constants throughout his career!
March 7th, 2018 at 7:54 am
This could be the setup of a great offseason!!!!!! And it adds to my theory of bold moves to come!!!!!! OMG Its another “Realist Repost”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Buc Realist Says:
March 4th, 2018 at 11:34 am
very suspicious that the “Bucs” interest were reported!!! Could this just be the greatest smoke screen in Bucs history?????? Bucs hire a D-line coach with 3-4 experience, yet “say” in the interview that they will primarily run a 4-3!!!!!!! Then to let leak of interest in trading for Quinn way after the fact!!!!!!!!!!
Stay tuned Buc fans and sheep!!!!!!!!!!
GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 7th, 2018 at 8:04 am
Bucs could be sniffing his value and then take a wait and see approach during the draft. If someone falls and you need a 2nd rounder to move up or just the extra pick…make that trade.
Maybe the Bucs are looking at the 4/3 DL FA and Draft Landscape and know they’ll need a major scheme change to be able to improve their upfront pressure.
While I love the Player – its not working – I’m on board for doing anything different.
NE moves on from good players while they still have some value all of the time. 30yr Defensive Tackles don’t win Superbowls.
March 7th, 2018 at 8:06 am
Staying huh…..too bad
March 7th, 2018 at 8:13 am
And Joe was happy to propagate this rumor with a clickbait headline. Why not? Everyones’s doing it. A Hall of Fame voter published this on ESPN noting that NFL executives were consulted. Why would Joe possibly ignore passing this on to readers, because you think it’s bogus? Joe is always pleased to let readers know what’s out there and form their own opinions. –Joe
March 7th, 2018 at 8:28 am
Bucs shld look at Blount, Nigel bradham, patrick robinson and beau allen. Raid the champs cupboard. Of course the MAIN focus should be oline, run game to protect the franchise. This is where the bucs have failed miserably. Cant ask a rookie to piggyback with zero run game or defense. Where does this work?? Lmao!!!! Big xii maybe
March 7th, 2018 at 8:32 am
Why keep giving passes to this Coaching Staff….I just don’t see the difference in the wins and losses…the offense can’t score in the red zone…the defensive backfield is on an high school level yet we hire a new defensive-line coach wtf, the GM continues to go after 2nd and 3rd tier Free Agents and we expect things to change, we are in for another 5 game win season!!
March 7th, 2018 at 8:55 am
I love the expectations some put on a defensive tackle!
Yea, trade him for a box of peanuts! That’ll surely fix everything!
In case you haven’t been keeping score, the Bucs NEED d-line help. But sure, lets trade the best player on that d-line. Brilliant!
March 7th, 2018 at 8:58 am
@realist
so if Winston has to sit this staff gets a 2year pass……if they trade GMC they get a 2year pass…..
whats next?….we lose week 1 they get a 3year pass?…..lol…..you weren’t in such a passive mode with the previous regime…..imagine that…..
luckily, the “REAL FANS” are tired of fakes like you and the staff making EXCUSES!!!!!!!!…….no more passes are given out in 2018!!!!!!……NO PLAYOFFS….NO JOB!!!!!!
#NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!!
March 7th, 2018 at 9:02 am
teacherman
I hear ya!!!!!!….JPP has made it work…..if he goes undrafted bring him in for TC…..see if he can make some plays…..
#NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!……GO BUCS!!!!
March 7th, 2018 at 9:07 am
@Joe “A Hall of Fame voter published this on ESPN noting that NFL executives were consulted. Why would Joe possibly ignore passing this on to readers, because you think it’s bogus? Joe is always pleased to let readers know what’s out there and form their own opinions. –Joe”
C’mon man. The only value the article has is comedic. Some guys with “credentials” had a bunch of beers and made stuff up. The vetting was amongst each other ‘ “Do you think it’s possible, Earl?” “Yeah, sure. It’s the Bucs, they’re stupid. They might just trade one of the top DTs in the league for an unproven crapshoot.”
Admittedly, it’s the Bucs, so……………
March 7th, 2018 at 9:11 am
I wouldnt let Mc COy unless someone makes an offer we can refuse, my opinion a 2 rounder is not enough…..We have already to many problems on de DL with Mc Coy…….let´s imagine without 93……Good DE are like Panda bears, not many around…….
March 7th, 2018 at 9:15 am
GMC will bring nothing in a trade. I seriously doubt the Bucs will get anything better than a 5th round draft pick for him. These GMs are not Jason Lichts, GMs don’t throw away high draft picks.
March 7th, 2018 at 9:22 am
The Bucs coaching staff are “Incompetent”.
They should get a ” free pass” on that alone
They also has an “Incompetent” GM
The owners are to blame, for allowing this
March 7th, 2018 at 9:40 am
LakeLand- EXACTLY!!! Leadership has and always will start at the top.
You are also correct about any trade for GMC. People need to just come to the realization that it is far more beneficial for him to stay at this point.
March 7th, 2018 at 9:44 am
“No pass rush! No cbs! 1 safety! No RB ! No Center! One guard!”
(purposely left out poster name so I can address everyone who feels this way)
• Pass Rush – This cannot be denied. Well, mostly. McCoy is the one pass rusher we have. But imagine this…we take Vita Vea in round one. We take Landry or Hubbard in round two. And if we end up signing a good free agent? Pass rush issue solved.
• CBs – People are giving up on Vernon Hargreaves far too quickly. He had one bad year. That’s all. And it was his sophomore year, the same year a good 75% of NFL players have bad years on, and that includes CBs. Ryan Smith played well when put in a starting role as well. Remember, he was forced into safety his first year. Last year technically was his rookie year at his natural position. Yes, I would love to get Grimes back another year. And yes, we should draft or sign another CB. But good lord…it’s not even free agency yet!!!!
• Safety – Simply not true. We have Conte and Evans (who played very well). Once we have a pass rush, the DBs will all look much better.
• Center – That is a total, complete crock. We have Ali Marpet, who started rough in the position (first year there) but improved in leaps and bounds as he acclimated to the position.
• Guard – Sweezy. Pamphile. And upgrade would be nice, but let’s get something straight. It was well known that Sweezy would not be stellar his first year back. Heck, there were articles predicting it. Pamphile finally got a starting role. Give him some time to develop there. Fans seem to think that an elite offensive line is elite over night. None ever are. Sometimes that take years. That’s what is called development, acclimation and getting used to the players nest to you.

March 7th, 2018 at 9:51 am
The “Joes” defend softy ice cream as being an “impact” player for the Bucs but the proof was stated here today…32nd and dead last Defensive Line…It can’t get any lower…3rd rounder is sufficient 🙂
March 7th, 2018 at 10:08 am
2nd rounder sounds good to me. After all the Bucs has the worse defense with him. Hell you can’t get lower than that. So what are they really losing.
March 7th, 2018 at 11:52 am
BigHog haynes..they give passes to Koetter and Smitty because they want to beleive this duo can take us all the way. But they are wrong. Koetter should have just stayed in his lane for a few more yrs as OC. And Poor Smitty’s time has come and gone. ATL owner Arthur Blanks saw that and released him immediately. Smitty should have been fired immediately after last season. But we got him and Koetter again this year to lose once again.
March 7th, 2018 at 12:12 pm
Darn right Mike Johnson! Why Smitty is still here is a mystery.
March 7th, 2018 at 12:32 pm
Anyone suggesting McCoy, a $13 mil, 6 sack, 29 yr DT, is worth anything more than a 4th, same thing we couldn’t get a $12 mil, 27 yr 8+Sacks DE like Quinn are come completely out of your minds, so please stop acting stupid
March 7th, 2018 at 12:32 pm
I dont understand why anyone thinks surrounding GMC with better players is some great excuse to keep him. ANYONE would be better with great players around them. GMC is not a difference maker. Never has been and never will be. He looks good on paper, great first step until you see him on the field. Soon age will take that first step away and he wont have anything to fall back on. We need to get something for him soon. A 2nd at this point is most likely unrealistic but I’d take it in a heartbeat. GMC is never going to help us win. Are you Buc Fans or McCoy Fans? There is a difference.
March 7th, 2018 at 12:45 pm
Couch- Everybody’s so willing to move him for this or that. What do you replace him with? Consider how awful we already are. Do you really want another position to have to fill. Whether he’s a “difference maker” or not, he’s the best we have at the position.
Even a 2nd round pick is a crap shoot, and he will NOT fetch that high of a pick.
He stays because we can’t afford to move him. We all know that he will need to be replaced in the near future but why give him away when you need him right now?
I would argue that your expectations for a DT are a little high. We win as a TEAM.
March 7th, 2018 at 12:55 pm
Im not suggesting giving him away for nothing or out right releasing him. That would just be stupid but if we can get something decent for him then pull the trigger. You ask what do we replace him with? Hope. With McCoy we have none. Without him we can easily still be last in sacks. With more picks we have more hope that we’ll land a future impact player. I realize rookies are no locks to be impactful their first year but this isnt about this season. Or at least it shouldnt be because even with McCoy are chances are very low this year that we actually win more than we lose. Trading McCoy is about the future. And yes my expectations may be a little high but shouldnt all of ours be? I dont like settling for mediocrity.
March 7th, 2018 at 1:41 pm
Couch- I got you. My point is that we would have to find ANOTHER free agent stop-gap or draft for one more position. We have so many holes on our defensive roster, and forget about depth. “Hope”?! Man, that’s all we have as Buc fans!
All of our expectations should be high. That’s why we need to put good players on the field. It’s apparent that we don’t have those players right now based on the stats. Consider that with his 6/7 sacks he accounted for more than 25%. Imagine 4 players contributing 25%! I hate math BTW!
I just think that McCoy has unfairly become the punching bag for what we should be blaming on poor drafting and management of FA’s.
I think he’ll be retained. Hopefully they will put good players on the field with him so that we can start winning games and start going to the post-season.
March 7th, 2018 at 1:59 pm
The Jason Licht experiment has been a huge failure.
I am rewarding the Bucs by cancelling my club seats…all four of them.
Losers don’t deserve my money.
