Jameis And His Shoulder
February 28th, 2018Man, wouldn’t it be nice if all of us would be able to hit the pause button and rewind our lives.
And that’s the case with Bucs coach Dirk Koetter. It is so easy to look in the rear view mirror and see that Koetter should have benched America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, when he first injured his throwing shoulder against (Minnesota?) Arizona.
But Koetter didn’t. Asked about that late this morning in a private sidebar with Joe and Bucs beat reporters from Indianapolis at the NFL combine, Koetter said he had to go with the information he had at the time, and that information was Jameis was good to go.
“A lot of players in the NFL are playing hurt,” Koetter said. “It is a little bit different when it is your quarterback. But it is hard to sit down a starting player when; A) he has been cleared by the medical staff; and, B) [Jameis is] saying he can go. So as far as Jameis specifically, it hard to say, on this play, on this play, on this play… is that a shoulder issue? Those are hard things to say.
“There are not many teams in the NFL, I have never seen it, if your starting quarterback is able to play, that you say, ‘Nah, I’m going with this guy.’
“You have to trust the information that you have, with all of the players you have with injuries. No doubt, the shoulder injury affected Jameis for a stretch of the season until he sat down. He showed when he did come back, when he is healthy, he is pretty good.”
Jameis did have decent to good games where one could argue Jameis fought through the pain. Jameis was OK against the Belicheats and he was sharp against Buffalo. That, Joe is confident, was part of the reason Koetter didn’t bench Jameis.
Again, looking in the rear view mirror is often cool and likely accurate. In real time, though, the reality is something different.

chronic shoulder? …he had an issue pre-draft on the shoulder..
February 28th, 2018 at 2:03 pm
I thought jameis had an okay game against Buffalo. He threw a pick right to the Buffalo player and he dropped it. Other than that, he had an okay game

ODD article, not pertinent at all. With all the news going on today, THIS makes the list??
Go Bucs!
February 28th, 2018 at 2:14 pm
So, you don’t think the health of the most important player on the Bucs roster is important? Or how the coach handles a serious injury to his most important player?
Speaking of “odd.”
February 28th, 2018 at 2:18 pm
Why didn’t he have offseason shoulder surgery like Cam Newton?
It must not be that bad of an injury.

No excuses! Right 813?!

@Joe … “And Jameis did have decent to good games where one could argue Jameis fought through the pain.” Uhhh, forgot one important thing Joe … we LOST every single one of those games that he started with a bum shoulder. And yes, it was injured in Arizona … remember when he couldn’t start the 2nd half? He might’ve tweaked it in Minnesota, but not enough to yank him from the game.
Bucs LOST every single game that they were behind at the half in 2017 with one exception: the last game against New Orleans (and the Saints were only up by 1 point at halftime). That’s a disturbing fact: we only came back to win the game ONE time in 2017 when we were behind at the half. In our 11 losses, we were behind at the half in every single one of them. No question that the Bucs’ defense screwed the pooch on 4 of those (they couldn’t hold the lead at the end of the game). But how about slow first half starts? Oh ya, big time … but only ONE by Fitz. In his 2 wins, we were ahead at the half in BOTH those games; in the first Falcons game (that Fitz started), we were behind 20-6 at the half … and we lost.
Point being that Jameis’ shoulder probably did in fact contribute to several of the 10 losses that he started in.

You people have some real selective memories when you want to use the for excuses for QB’s of your choosing.
February 28th, 2018 at 2:43 pm
There are a lot of things I’ve been critical of Dirk on but this isn’t one of them. Managing QBs isn’t like managing a starting pitcher where if you see a dip in performance you give him the collar.

Okay? Just Okay?
He threw for about 400 yards 3 TDs and 1 interception and had what should have been the game winning TD drive in the 4th quarter putting the team up 27-20. That was against what was at the time one of the best defenses in the league; while he had no run game (Martin 20 carries 49 yards)
lmfao at him having an “okay” game. Wtf is a good game? 500 yards 5 TDs 0 Interceptions. Jesus Christ our fans suck

Bucs didn’t lose because of Jameis’ shoulder at Buffalo. You know, three-plays, 75-yards Tyrod Taylor?
Bucs didn’t lose to the Belicheats because of Jameis’ bum shoulder. Remember Bucs were banking on a kicker who needed knee surgery and OJ Howard ran the wrong route on the final offensive play.

I was about to say the same thing these people are just ridiculous. I will also add in that game Jamies’s completion % was 73%!!!!!
So if that is ok then I guess the game he played against Atlanta where he was 77% comp% 299 yards 3 TD’s & 0 picks was just decent.
I just wish people would just look around the league and that they would actually start to have a little appreciation for having a QB of Jamies ability and potential.

@ndog
The reason Jameis isn’t respected is because he’s had to play on the equivalent of the Cleveland Browns and people just lazily look at Wins and Losses. If he wasn’t hurt and made the playoffs with the same f*cking numbers he had in 2017 I guarentee the storyline is different and all about how he has been improving / taking a next step or whatever

Fix the Oline!!! Cut Sweezy – Let Pamphile walk – Sign Norwell – Draft Nelson
February 28th, 2018 at 3:13 pm
ACTUALLY Joe….this fan believes that something that happened in the rear view mirror of a 2017 bungled 5-11 season doesn’t matter anymore, and those questions shouldn’t have been asked/wasted in the access that this “website” has at the Scouting Combine. If “we” collective fans had that kind of access, we’d likely concentrate on the topics that these and ALL hard-core Bucs fans are looking for THIS time of the 2018 upcoming year. Etc, etc.
So no, it’s NOT a relevant topic at all.
Go Bucs!

@BetterBuccinBelieveIt
Why don’t you suggest questions you want asked then? At least you’d be somewhat constructive with the criticism vs just trying to sh1t on Joe

@LordCorn,
🙂 Some are leaders, some are followers Corn.
To think that I had (prior) congratulated you on some of your comments, retort on prior threads, not sure what I was thinking? And if you were truly paying attention to all prior threads recently in my commentary, I have been real, and critical, and constructive on a number of topics. That’s what any good football fan of their team is more than entitled to do. No one, is attempting to unnecessarily tread on anyone.
And everyone knows that Jameis’ shoulder is fine (now). That was largely the central theme of the piece. Until James Andrews tells anyone different, including the coaches, no one knows definitively that it’s not, especially with the offseason.
Go Bucs!

@Joe … “Bucs didn’t lose because of Jameis’ shoulder at Buffalo.” Bucs lost 30-27. Jameis (1 INT, 2 fumbles – 1 lost); Humphries (1 fumble – 1 lost). Fumbles also by OJ, ME13, Brate (none lost). We lost by 3 pts Joe, and Jameis’ 2 turnovers killed 2 drives & cost us 10 pts (fumbled when we were within FG range & INT was well within our own territory & led to a Bills TD). BTW, Hump’s fumble was also well within our own territory & also led to a Bills’ FG). That’s a 16 point differential right there as a result of turnovers. And another BTW, know whose name showed up a LOT for Buffalo on defense? Some CB named Leonard Johnson. Whodathunkit?

Ok man then post the questions you want asked… otherwise I don’t get the point.

This subject Joe was a good one when it was relevant. We want to know about the draft and combine, don’t be like every other repoter keep the subjects respectable and stop pushing gossip on us.
February 28th, 2018 at 5:25 pm
Jamies is losing steam in the young QB lineup. He needs to play like I know he is capable, for 16 games!!!! Go Bucs. Go Jameis.

Jameis hurts the team with his wanting to compete when he’s hurting.
