No, not that kind of “physical.”
A popular theory among a sect of Bucs fans is that the offensive line is the most wretched thing imaginable since stumbling upon an episode of “Mama’s Family.”
Joe doesn’t subscribe to this theory. Just in the time Joe has launched this here website, the Bucs have had far worse offensive lines.
And it doesn’t seem that new Bucs defensive line coach Brentson Buckner believes the offensive line is a trainwreck either.
Last week when he was introduced to the Tampa Bay pen and mic club, prized JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman asked Buckner what he thought of the Bucs’ offensive line.
In two meetings between the Cardinals and the Bucs the past two seasons, both with Buckner on the Arizona bench, the Cardinals defensive line — Buckner’s troops — had their way.
“Well, first of all, you see those big five guys run out of that huddle, that’s one of the biggest offensive lines that we would face and we knew that they would be a physical run game just based on playing in the NFC South and the type of mentality that it takes to play in this division,” Buckner said. “We knew that we had our hands tied behind our backs. You had to be physical, you had to be willing to stick your face in the fan, be physical with those guys and stand toe-to-toe.”
If Buckner wasn’t trying to con folks, this has Joe fired up enough to try to tackle the neighbor’s Husky.
If Buckner thought the Bucs’ front line was that physical and he thought his defensive line was in for a long afternoon, then that tells Joe that Buckner might be such an inspirational motivator he could talk Kellen Winslow out of working out with the Vaseline.
The way the Cardinals simply owned the line of scrimmage those days, that was some coaching by Buckner.

of course he was trying to con folks or the bucs would not have had a miserable run game for the last couple of years. all the off season feel good stories, fluff and misguided optimism get’s tiresome when your team fails each and every year. nutpunched by week 4 and draft talk by week 8 it’s a bucs life. 4-12 with cancer93 10-6 without the disease

The Bucs O-line is the most wretched thing since the song “Horse With No Name”, or maybe “MacArthur Park”. “Mama’s Family” is not even a close second.

Oline is not a “train wreck” – but we do need 2 upgrades at Guard if Marpet stays at Center.
Sign Norwell – Draft Nelson. Done. Next year draft Dot’s replacement and we won’t have to worry about Oline for some time.

Not really.
It’s more so that fans want to upgrade it because we know there should be great options in FA and the draft to do so. It’s more so that fans don’t want to settle on a Kevin Pamphile or JR Sweezy when we can get better.
What’s the point in getting a franchise QB and all these weapons if we want to settle for a mediocre to bad offensive line? Wouldn’t we want to make the line at least above average so that the strengths of the team are allowed to thrive?
Yes obviously DE is a major hole. We need pass rushers. But there’s nothing wrong with turning a non-strength into a strength. Especially when all the other pieces are there on offense already. We can address the defense AND the offensive line. There’s no reason to settle.
If upgrading the line / RBs = us scoring 25-27+ PPG then the defense could not improve at all and we’d be pushing for the playoffs; and at least have an identity as a team that can move the ball all day / score points / control the clock.

we knew that they would be a physical run game just based on playing in the NFC South
sorry buckner….we are led by dirk and smitty….theirs nothing “physical” about this team and especially the offense….dirk likes finesse air it out type of offenses…..we are t he only team in the NFC SOUTH that doesn’t have a respectable run game…..
until we fix that, nothing will change…..

I credit Mr. Campbell (the one Jason Licht let get away) with a lot of that too.

I keep saying the offensive line played good this year. It was the predictable playcalling was the problem. All year long, it was like the defense knew what was coming. No offensive line can overcome that.

Most Buc fans should be very happy. Koetter and his sidekick Smitty have to win this season. Anything less than 8-8 gets them a brand new reel and Rod and 2 free passes to the Lovie/Schiano fishing show! Lets see what the dynamic duo..no trio comes up with this year. I said all along Koetter was not ready for a HC position. I still say that. Sorry Joe..I’ll take the..vaseline..and the lady pictured over season tickets any day.

Joe, just stop defending the Bucs line. Please.
It was not ALL Doug Martin’s fault.
The Bucs line was mediocre during the best of times and subpar most of the time. They have one guy with above average talent in Marpet.
It’s irrelevant how this offensive line compares to the rest of the past Bucs lines.
Completely irrelevant.
The math is simple. 12 teams out of 32 make the playoffs every year. More often than not, the teams with the better ranked offensive and/or defensive lines make the playoffs. Let’s find one stat where the Bucs ranked in the top 12 in the league on the either the offensive or defensive lines. Let’s not forget how many sacks JAmeis saved he Bucs with his ability to squirm out of pressure and extend plays. and all those fumbles from Jameis – think immense QB pressure had anything to dow with any of those?
I’ll wait here and hold my breath while everyone looks for a stat where the Bucs finished in the top 12 on either of the lines.
In order to really be a contender you need a top 10 offensive and defensive line. The Bucs are nowhere near that right now. They need to infuse some serious talent on both sides of the ball. Period.

I like our line with Sweezy. I’d like to see Phampile stay to compete with him and I think it would make both of them better for it.
We’re one Garuda away IMO and if I’m the Bucs I’m drafting one since Nelson could slip. If not I’ve been hear fans here with several options for a guard in round 2.
Benechot needs to keep getting better and I like Hawley but we may need his spot for younger depth to develope. Especially if we keep Evan Smith which I say is a must.
For those saying it wasn’t Doug Martins fault in the running game there is a reason why Barber(who is nothing more then a bowling ball type rusher) had more chunk plays and higher yard per then Martin did. Doug absolutely sucked last year. He hit the second level more then enough and did next to nothing with those chances.
Our pass protection looks like it breaks down sometimes but when you play a really good Dline like the Panthers they are not going to let you run seven step drop, stop, and survey plays all day. A good coach would know this. An average coach wouldn’t let them do it again in a rematch. A bad coach would figure it out but the following season………Can Dirk at least be a bad coach?
