About The Monken Promotion
January 29th, 2018Joe has already offered his two takes on perhaps why Dirk Koetter did not attend Senior Bowl practices last week, which Joe believes had little to do with the promotion of Todd Monken to full-time offensive coordinator from part-time OC with receivers coach duties.
Joe can only conclude this promotion is a plus.
There are two assistants Joe thinks highly of on Koetter’s staff; that would be linebackers coach Mark Duffner and Monken.
Joe still is in a bit of a shock the Bucs got Monken two years ago after he totally rebuilt Southern Miss from a garbage program to a bowl team. Everywhere Monken has been in college, the team and its offense has thrived.
The way folks beamed about former Bucs receivers coach P.J. Fleck a couple of years ago when he took Western Michigan to the Cotton Bowl, well, Monken was on that level of Division I coaches — at a non-Power-5 school ready to take the big step up.
Monken has done a wonderful job with the Bucs receivers. Monken noted when he first came to Tampa Bay he was given one direct order from Koetter: Fix Mike Evans. He has. This past season, the Bucs had tremendous play from backups like Adam Humphries and Chris Godwin, and even the lounge singer Freddie Martino, resident act at the Vero Beach Ramada Inn.
Joe is just going to guess Monken is now heavily involved with Koetter in both trying to repair the rotten red zone offense and to generate some modicum of a run game.
As Joe has noted, it is not a stretch to imagine if the Bucs don’t make a playoff run next year, the entire Bucs coaching staff will be looking for new jobs.
Having a guy like Monken taking on added responsibilities in the offense is a helluva smart move by Koetter.

A great leader doesn’t do everything himself. If he’s truly talented he has an eye for other great coaches and the ability and charisma to get them to work for him.
January 29th, 2018 at 3:47 pm
The Bucs should get a speedy, veteran receiver like DJax. Imagine what Monken can do with him.
January 29th, 2018 at 3:53 pm
OMG!!!!! I think STPeteBucsfan just called out GMC93!!!!!!!!!!
StPeteBucsFan Says:
A great leader doesn’t do everything himself. If he’s truly talented he has an eye for other D-lineman and the ability and charisma to get them to work for him.
Thats the finally straw!!!!! Trade GMC for picks!!!!!!!! Draft Mount Vea ( man among boys)!!!! and fix the “real” problems, the “trenches”!!!!!!!!!!

I love how everyone wants to blame the coaches, Jamies and everyone but D-Jax for D-Jax not performing well last year. Yet of all the people blamed who was the only one not showing up for OTA’s and the only one running out of bounds or laying down at the first sign of contact? The reality is D-jax does not have the right kind of personality for this team. This team needs hard nosed guys who want to work and drive themselves and their teammates to get better. Look at who Jamies has had success with, Brate Hard Worker, Hump Hard Worker, Godwin Hard Worker, Evans Hard Worker, heck Russell Shepard Hard Worker. D-Jax is talented no doubt but sometimes it is just not a good fit and I believe this just may very well be the case for him here.

As Joe has noted before, it is not a stretch to imagine if the Bucs don’t make a playoff run next year, both Koetter and Monken and the rest of the Bucs coaching staff maybe looking for a new job.
***************************************************************
bingo!!!!!…….luckily we wont have to go thru another offseason in full excuse mode…..the regime has to get it right in 2018…..so they only have a few months to collect/sign/draft “talented players” that so many think we’re missing….
yeah its a smart move for someone looking for a scapegoat….I thought dirk was the offensive guru?…..#NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!
January 29th, 2018 at 4:09 pm
@Realist
LMAO GMC does not control who the Bucs draft and who they sign in FA. He has had less input than even #3.
Now if you can show me that GMC was part of the Bucs braintrust with Licht and Koetter and the Glazers and he controlled our draft…THEN you might have a point.
If the Bucs sign both Talib and Michael Bennett then perhaps at last they are paying attention to GMC.
January 29th, 2018 at 4:10 pm
Dirk Koetter should give Todd Monken the full OC duties. John Mckay gave Joe Gibbs his first OC job, back in 1978 with the Bucs. Joe Gibbs scouted Doug Williams, convinced the Bucs to draft Doug. Todd Monken can’t do any worse than Dirk Koetter.
January 29th, 2018 at 4:12 pm
dork koetter knows he may not be able to do much by way of improving his defense this off-season but I think he believes that if he had a high octane offense he could be given more time to improve the defense with a new coordinator and younger players. If he’s smart he is planning to score 30 points a game
January 29th, 2018 at 4:18 pm
Koetter probably shouldn’t have gone to the Senior Bowl. Don’t know if you want a head coach that doesn’t know anything about defense looking at players. Especially when our defense is the worst in the league.
January 29th, 2018 at 4:19 pm
Not there yet,
According to our GM we all thought they should have been scoring 50 a game last year so why are you lowering our standards? You since we are all so clueless when it comes to football.
January 29th, 2018 at 5:00 pm
Wow Joe’s Bravo on these last 3 articles. These might almost be better than Andrew McCabe, FBI Deputy Director, being forced to resign today.
January 29th, 2018 at 5:24 pm
A promotion also makes it more likely that Monken stays with the Bucs instead of taking a job elsewhere.
January 29th, 2018 at 5:52 pm
Good for ya. Now all we need is a stretch handoff, but instead of a football being handed to Drug Martin, it needs to be a handoff of that play sheet and the headsets to good ol’ Monk
January 29th, 2018 at 6:03 pm
I really hope Koetter is here for years to come, but sadly I would push my chips in on Mike Smith crapping all over my hopes and dreams
January 29th, 2018 at 6:04 pm
GMC is a douche, and his personality is annoying. But he is not the Problem. we need more players with the talent level of a GMC.
January 29th, 2018 at 6:21 pm
Just my opinion but I think Koetter needs help from the box upstairs. Hard to understand what the D is doing from the field view. Hard to even account for substitutions.
January 29th, 2018 at 6:41 pm
Ok I’ll buy what you’re selling Joe..
I just don’t know what happened to the ‘play calling guru’ that Koetter was brought in to be… didn’t Licht say coaches don’t just forget how to coach?
January 29th, 2018 at 7:19 pm
I bet Monken is calling plays by week 1 and Dirk will of coarse have veto power on certain calls during game depending on situation. Looks like Dirk is learning how to really self evaluate, not just say it but actually be honest and do it, last year at least 11 times he stood at podium after games and said they were out executed as well as out coached. I believe he will be a good head coach as its clear and obvious players respect him and will play hard for him.
January 29th, 2018 at 7:30 pm
I want to go full McVey. Set up for a set of options based on personnel and let Jameis get us into the right play based on how the defense sets up.
January 29th, 2018 at 8:05 pm
Did JBF get new writers?
1. Joe can only conclude this promotion is a plus.
2. Monken has done a wonderful job with the Bucs receivers
3. Fix Mike Evans. He has.
4. even the lounge singer Freddie Martino, resident act at the Vero Beach Ramada Inn
Monken is garbage
The receivers are no better than when they got here other than maybe learning the playbook. Hump played behind 2 all-pro receivers in Clemson and Godwin cane in looking like a pro if anything Godwin is teaching the coaching staff a thing or two like bringing the ball the center field in hurry up O.
Mike Evans had probably his worst season yet and STILL has zero yac.
Freddie Martino has the highest yards per catch on the team since he’s been on the roster.
Joe is reaching!
January 29th, 2018 at 8:09 pm
Moken charged with fixing Big Mike….how do you fix a young Pro Bowl Player… You let him do his thing …Oooo we know Moken did the hard work ..BS! OC Moken = another MEDICORE 6 win season!! TAKE A KNEE…KEEP AMERICA FREE..let’s not MAKE AMERICA WHITE AGAIN…Realist STAY ON THE BLACK!!
January 29th, 2018 at 8:29 pm
Bucnjim – probably the best observation Ive read in the comments in the past month. Dead on.
Winston would have to know how to read a defense to go “McVey”. If this coaching retention plan fails, look no further than the dumb loyalty to Bajankian and Winston’s obvious lack of progression as a QB after year 4. Glazers wake up!
January 29th, 2018 at 10:06 pm
Monken was probably getting interviewed to OC other teams, my guess.
January 29th, 2018 at 10:14 pm
Db 55 is pretty accurate and the inability of Evans to catch while running and continue to run/ accelerate would make Mike Martz want to cut him !!!
Well that wouldn’t happen of coarse but neither would The the terrible traits that Evans has ,sliding ,falling down ,jumping etc !!! The guy is 6 4 catch the dam ball while running ,Monken has done a terrible job with Evans !!!
January 29th, 2018 at 10:33 pm
I also agree with Bucnjim. And I know they won’t go “full McVey.” If the repressed bully is the prevalent personality of people who go into police work, the obsessive, compulsive control freak is the prevalent personality of NFL head coaches. Nothing, except perhaps for his refreshingly unfiltered candor at press conferences, indicates our head coach is any different.
Where I disagree with many people here is that I think Jameis is (emphasis) smart enough to handle it well.

Big Hog, go somewhere else with your racist political garbage. You liberals sound like bitter old women. Get over it. This site is about FOOTBALL. Go spew your BS on Politico or Salon or somewhere else.
January 30th, 2018 at 7:05 am
Still not a promotion. He was already the offensive coordinator. Unless you are talking about his assistant.
January 30th, 2018 at 10:47 am
Who said this organization is laid back and doing nothing! Just like the NFL, fighting to get the best coaching talent, we are visionaries!
We, the Buc Sheep Fanbase, endorse the promotion of offensive coordinator Todd Monken to offensive coordinator.
“We are movers and shakers…Dilly Dilly”

The only thing worse, on a football site, than political comments are political insults.

You’re right. My apologies.
