Some Bucs fans don’t want to win.
Joe is convinced the losing Bucs culture has now infected way too many fans.
A quick reminder: The Bucs have had two winning seasons since Chucky was jettisoned on that dark January Friday afternoon in 2009. Even more galling than all the losing seasons, the Bucs have yet to take a snap in a playoff game since January 2008 — a full decade, folks.
Yet when Joe served up news Sunday that the Broncos were dangling Pro Bowl cornerback Aqib Talib for a potential trade, a position of need for the Bucs and maybe a great need depending on what free agent Brent Grimes decides to do, Bucs fans reacted to Joe on Twitter as if Talib would ruin the team.
The common complaint Joe read on Twitter was, trading for Talib would “send the team backwards.”
Huh?
Guys and gals, the Bucs own the longest playoff drought in the NFC. They haven’t played in a playoff game in a decade and are basically Cleveland South. Only the Browns have a worse home record than the Bucs in the past 10 years. You know, “Den of Depression?”
People, this team already is backwards!
If the Bucs pass on a chance to secure Talib for the next two years and then have Grimes thumb his nose at them, then Joe surely hopes AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht has some fantastic trick up his sleeve.
The way some Bucs fans freak like their checking account just got cleaned out by a hacker when it comes to Michael Bennett and Talib, Joe is confident the losing culture of the Bucs has spread to too many fans — they are so hostile about upgrading the defensive roster.

Its really very simple joe…..the fans that want Talib just do not want to trade for him. Why trade draft picks for a 32 year old that makes 12 mil? He will be cut soon enough and you will be able to get him at a discounted price.

If you don’t want to trade draft picks for a veteran (if he produces, Joe doesn’t give a damn if he is 45) Joe understands fully. But that also means you trust the current defensive coaches to develop a young cornerback or defensive end. What evidence are you basing this on?
Another factor folks tend to overlook. You think Jason Licht and Dirk Koetter have the luxury of picking players for the next GM/coach? These guys are likely in the midst of win-or-get-out offseason.

I just don’t want to see us give up too much for him. A third round pick would be way too pricey to me. I’d much rather bring in a rookie in the third round than Aqib. If he’s cut then I’d love to have him. He doesn’t have a history of violence towards women. Just cab drivers.

Give Denver a 5th or 6th and then reconstruct his contract.. Him opposite Grimes this year with Vernon Hargreaves in the slot, is a nice little trio. Throw in Bennett and Chubb at DE, our D becomes instantly better. Hears to hoping Arizona parts ways with Mathieu

and I am all for spinkilin in veterans with some baggage if the team has a great foundation and leadership and is close but this team is at the bottom of tampa bay and very far from any form of a legit contender, talib although is FAR superior than anyone on the bucs current roster, if he is or does have any thinking of coming herre may have talked to his weed buddy TJ and heard stay away, having to sign the talibs of the worl is a direct of lichts terrible building of this franchise

The Bucs WILL win, when they compile a strong base of young players, not adding some stopgap OLD guys to hammer the salary cap ….and they will have to be replaced asap anyway…trading picks and adding free agents is the recipe that put this team in a tailspin…

Poor planning and personnel decisions by the GM and head coaches have brought the Bucs to this sad state of affairs where we desperately need to acquire (and overpay) high character guys like Talib and Bennett. This is what happens when you give up an extra 4th rounder to move up in the 2nd round to draft a kicker and you draft and get free agents on offense as “weapons” for your immature, inaccurate 1st round QB. Bucs don’t seem to learn from their mistakes. Wish we had a “Tom Coughlin” in the front offic.e

My point is why trade for someone who is about to be released? Denver knows he is not a 13 mil cornerback anymore and they are trying to if there is a sucker to take him off their hand. My point is wait until he becomes a free agent and you get him cheaper. He already has interest in coming back. That way you can potentially sign both grimes and talib. One thing is for sure, if you are paying talib 13 mil, you are not resigning grimes and then the bucs will be in the same situation with only one good cornerback. That would not help our situation.

Will Mile Smith use a Defense that employable press man coverage?
This is what VHIII does better. Get him in space and he is so aware that he lacks recovery speed he gets tentative. Ryan Smith is another guy that looks better in press man. Grimes likes off man.
Just because Talib can play doesn’t mean he will be used properly. Make Talib play off man and his effectiveness will be drastically reduced.

I think a big part of the hesitation to bring in Talib, by some, is that when he was hear and not surrounded by a great pass rush like he was in Denver, he was very ordinary. So if you are going to get a older ordinary CB then why get one with the baggage. To be clear I am not against getting him but if you are looking at it the way I described above it is a good question.

My lasting memory of Talib was the monday nighter vs Dallas. Got beat by Dez on like the second play of the game and then hobbled off with a hammy. Guy never was a great player for the Bucs, it took NE and Denver to bring them out of him. Now he is 32 years old and making big money as he heads to the downside of his career. Let’s find a younger and cheaper alternative, especially with an over 35 high paid Grimes on the other side.

First off – does Talib WANT to come back to the Buccaneers?
If so – then I imagine he will find his way here once Denver releases him.
The last thing we need is another talented yet overpaid CB who doesn’t really give a rats a$$ about the fortunes of this team.
Talib is 32 years old and was downstat last year. No team is going to want to pay Aquib $12M next year and certainly no other team is going to want to give up draft picks for the “privilege” of overpaying him…
Focus on getting a deal done w/ Grimes and when Talib becomes available – see if he wants to come “home” and offer a fair price to do so ($8-9M per year tops for no more than 2 years).
Anything beyond that would be reckless.
Talib would likely be a good addition for a year or two – IF he WANTS to be here and doesn’t insist on being overpaid.

We have what 80 million in cap space? Trading for Aquib for two years would be a great move and non-detrimental to the cap. Also free’s up draft choices for other needs and lord knows we have plenty of needs.

ive been saying this since last year!!!!…..VHG and ryan smith are man press CB’s….the only one that is successful in soft/off coverage is grimes….
so smitty has been forcing our 2 young CB’s to play in a scheme that puts them in position to fail in favor of 1 35 year old CB that has been playing soft/off coverage his entire career…..

Excuse me, but the Buc’s need to win some games next year or none of this really matters. Talib is younger than Grimes and has continued to play at a High level. The only reason they need to unload him is because money, not his diminished ability. As far as pride, very few of us have much of that left after 10 years. We need Talib to cover these big WR’s we face in the NFC South. So if the wild one hits the market, we need him roaming our defensive backfield causing havoc. Trade for him.

If, say, Bennett and Talib are “over the hill,” given their production last year, then Ryan Smith and Will Clarke haven’t even seen the hill.
But, if you are OK with losing, with being last in the NFL in passing yards allowed and last in the league in sacks is fine with you, OK. If the Bucs lose again next year and have a rotten defense, don’t be b!tching about the Bucs not upgrading talent on defense.
If the friggin’ defensive coaches could develop young corners and/or defensive ends, we wouldn’t be discussing a giant need to sign or trade for other teams’ players.

Bennett is complete garbage that won’t be coming here, but adding Talib would be a good thing if they can get it done for a pick that won’t hurt them. The Bucs have up Talib for what, a 4th rounder, so I think that’s the highest they could possibly pay for a player for 2 years. For every Kwon there’s 50 Ryan Smith’s, so a 4th won’t kill them – but I’d really try to get him for a 5th. Also the Bucs need to also bring back Grimes at the same time – then you got 2 man-on-man corners and then perhaps blitzing works (as opposed to playing your corners 20 yards off the line of scrimmage and wondering why your blitzes don’t work when the QB just throws to the guy who runs 5 yards, turns around and is wide open). I’d do it if you can – sign Grimes for 2 more years and get Talib for 2 years – do so as you got 2 years until Winston gets paid.

The Bucs are well aware of salary cap challenges coming up. They’re not going to pay these guys long term money…perhaps lock them up for a couple of years with a 3rd year option.
The locker room actually seems to be in decent shape right now hence Swaggy getting called out. After this past year Kwon and #3…LVD..GMC…all have enough seniority to spot and castigate the bad apples like Swaggy.

Both are still impact players with ATTITUDE(something this team has very little of). We need winners, we need that killer attitude to offset GMC Icecream man attitude.

You are aware that Darrell Green was playing CB until he was 42.
I will quickly concede that Darrell Green is exceptional!!! A HOFer who was lightning fast.
But 42 is ten years away from 32 (Talib/Bennett) and seven years older than Grimes.
Grimes and Miko take scrupulous care of his “instrument”. Miko feeds him health food and Brent is a gym rat.
I’ve heard Bennett is a workout warrior as well…I know nothing about Talib’s off season programs. But the Bucs will know if there is anymore gas in the tank.
The future is now!!! Only ONE season counts…2018! Nobody is going to blow long term money and for some of his apparent weaknesses Licht does appear to be a pretty good capologist.

Another interesting fact, talib has more picks with the bucs than he has with NE and Denver combined. The difference is those teams were good so he got the recognition he deserved. When you play with a 5-11 team, you very rarely get the accolades. Talib was very good before he left. Fyi…he has played 5 and a half years away from tampa.

I remember those dumb,stupid moves Greg Schiano was making in 2012. From sitting LeGarrette Blount to trading Aquib Talib. The Bucs finish dead-last in passing defense. Talib had 7 PD and a pick in 4 games before he was traded. I guess Schiano wanted to stick with Myron Lewis, Leonard Johnson, E,J Biggers , LeQuan Lewis, Anthony Gaitor etc.

WHEN he hits the market (which he’ll do so long as we don’t give up a pick and 11mil) then I’m alllllllll for going after him, Vontae Davis, Malcom Butler, Trumaine Johnson, whoever. You’re really fixated on Talib, which is fine he’s plenty good. Better than ANYONE currently on the roster.

Guess what, the bucs are still looking for a corner since they let talib go. They are also looking for a running back as well. All blount has done is win two super bowls with a chance at a third while the bucs still look for a running back. I always thought he was a good corner and still is. Joe to say he hasn’t had any issues since he’s left is simply not true. He shot himself in the leg for Christ’s sakes and falsified a police report that someone else shot him, been suspended twice at least for pulling Crabtree’s chain and starting a brawl and poking an Indy player in the eye like a punk.
He’s much better then what we have for sure, to give up a pick for him doesnt make any sense though imo. Just know that he might not be there for you if he’s susp need again or getting ridiculous personal foul penalties after the whistle.

I wonder what Miko Grimes has to say about Talib & Bennett. Funny thing is if you have paid attention to her she is right more often then not. Plus Brent’s play at his age (in NFL years) and his vertical leap defy odds. He’s the type of veteran leader this team needs and shows up every single game unlike some others.

Talib and Grimes as outside cb’s, Hargreaves in slot where he played good, with Evans at safety, plus possibly draft Fitzpatrick, or D.James at other safety. I will take that all day as a secondary. Yes I agree without some pressure on the qb from our line it doesn’t matter who is in our secondary, but if Spence comes back healthy and we hit on a De in draft or free agency, all the sudden there is no excuse for our coaches to say its a talent issue. I hope if we do get Bennet and\or Talib, we draft a youngster to play behind them and hopefully grown into a replacement for the lil long in the tooth veteran.

Last year Talib had his lowest tackle season in Denver, and 2 of his 3 int’s were off deflections. Being in the right place at the right time. He’s playing like a player who is cognizant of his own mortality and is playing soft by avoiding contact to prolong his career. Is this what we really want to pay 12 million for? Or, should we continue looking for the next rising stars?

Give Grimes a good 2-year deal, we can’t afford to loose him right now.
VH3 is an excellent nickel. Bad deal for a 1st rounder, but it’s better than nothing.
Re-sign McClain and work hard on Ryan Smith one more year.

Webster – you could also say the Bucs have been looking for a DE since they let Bennet go. I agree that Ansah gets the tag.
I agree that Talib and Bennet are the obvious targets; I think Talib wont come here. Koetter and Licht have to be all in at this point and they need to fix the Dline badly.

Sign Talib and re-sign Grimes. It buys the club two years so we can draft a pair of CB’s next year or the one after. In 2016 Talib was PFF’s best coverage defender. When Talib plays man coverage, he is the definition of a lockdown corner. He was also the only full-time starting cornerback not to allow a touchdown all season in 2016. Talib had another great year last year and yielded only .58 yards per snap in coverage, one INT, one FF and seven passes defended and it was considered an “off” year. How much change will there be if the Bucs sign him this year? Not much. Pay him the 12M this year and 8M the next. He easily has two very productive years left in him.

Interesting statistic. Combine Talib, Grimes and Hargreaves in the slot and the secondary is complete. In the first round of the draft I still like the play maker Safety Derwin James, out of Florida State. Here are some quotes on how special of a player James is. “Possibly the best defensive playmaker in the draft, James is the new NFL prototype as a safety capable of producing against the run or in both man and zone coverage. Florida State also used him as a pure edge rusher, where he regularly pressured the quarterback. PFF’s top-graded safety both as a true freshman in 2015 and as a junior in 2017”. “James leveled a 320 tackle for Miami in his first year, I knew he was special”. “He’s a top 5 lock in th draft next year. I think he’s even better than Jalen Ramsey”. “Sean Taylor 2.0 and he will instantly be the best safety in the NFL week 1 in 2018”. Drafting James along with a DE in round two would solidify the group into a “championship” caliper defense necessary to get to the playoffs and do some damage when they get there.
