Warren Sapp spoke his mind. Now, a current Bucs stud has his take.
Earlier this week, Ring of Honor member Sapp lashed out at the horrible defense the Bucs displayed this season — and he wasn’t wrong. Sapp, among other words, slapped the defense with the term “absolutely disgraceful.”
Sapp was right. How many defensive categories can a team finish last in despite having one of the best linebacker units in football, and a Pro Bowler on the front and back ends, and still be this pathetic?
It’s an insult to paying customers much less the family that cuts the checks for worthless results.
(The way the stock markets are roaring, you don’t think Team Glazer has acid reflux knowing what they could have got in return for a $19 million investment rather than sinking that cash into 2.5 sacks?)
Well, it seems one of those fine linebackers of the Bucs is a bit miffed. While Kwon Alexander, who is playing in his first Pro Bowl this weekend, tread lightly knowing Sapp’s glorious history, Alexander seemed to imply to Sapp, back off big fella. You had your turn, let us fix the problem(s), so Alexander told Jenna Laine of ESPN.
“I don’t listen to the outside noise,” said Alexander, who’s in Orlando this week taking part in his first Pro Bowl. “I don’t care who’s talking about our team. [Sapp] had his run and we’ve got ours. This is on me, my defense. We’re gonna get to where we need to be. They weren’t perfect when they first got here. We’re gonna get the job done. So he can just stay over there…”
Joe has been harsh on defensive coordinator Mike Smith for a couple of reasons, even though it depresses the hell out of Joe because Smith is one of the classiest guys Joe has ever dealt with.
Joe was harsh on Lovie Smith and his rotten defense and but for five games (a fluke?) Mike Smith’s defenses have been worse. Joe has to be consistent. The results warrant a public spanking, and if Joe fired on Lovie, then Joe will fire on Mike Smith.
Hey, it’s a pass/fail league, right?
To be fair, perhaps because of his background as a linebackers coach, perhaps because linebackers coach Mark Duffner is a strong coach as well, no one can complain how Smith and Duffner have developed the linebackers. And it is touching that Alexander is almost like a son to Smith the two have such a close bond.
As for Duffner, let’s say if Vince McMahon came out of the blue next week and hired Smith to be the football face and braintrust to run the rebooted XFL, Joe would have no issue whatsoever if Duffner were named Bucs defensive coordinator.

The Linebackers has a bad season also. I seen RBs blow past them all season. It was like the roadrunner blowing past the coyote. They had lapse in pass coverage as well. They were a bad unit on a bad defense, but the other units just looked a lot worse.

Guys- cut joe some slack! how is he ever going to come out and bash the glaziers or licht or koetter or even smith and still get the time of day from the organization? Joe is a businessman, and it’s just business, man. Fantastic evidence of a reader who either has had too much to drink or just isn’t paying attention, and clearly you don’t listen to Bucs Uncensored. Regardless, Joe doesn’t give a flying crap about “time of day” and doesn’t write with concern about such things. And the reality is Joe has been very hard on Smith and the failures of coaching, and Joe wrote on and on and on about the foolish organizational decisions at running back and defensive ends. And so much more. Trust Joe, if the powers at One Buc don’t want to talk to Joe, that’s just fine. This website exploded without them and would continue to do so. –Joe
Let’s all just appreciate the constraints that he is facing.
And we can take up the mantle. The organization reeks. bad draft picks. shipping away good players. glaring unplugged holes in the roster. star players making headlines for the wrong reasons. loss after loss after loss.
I like Koetter. He is a likeable guy. Smith seems like a good guy. I even liked what I saw from Licht on hard knocks. but holy smokes, they are terrible at running an nfl team together team.
not cleaning house this year and bringing in patricia or mcdaniels to implement The Patriot Way in Tampa while they are available will go down as one of the biggest whiffs in franchise history.

I love Kwon Alexander, I think he brings a lot of fire and has a lot of dog in him and I hope he will be one of the cornerstones of a future championship team. All that being said, young man you better know who you’re talking about and respect. Warren was one of the reasons why this putrid franchise gain respectability and won a championship. Everything Warren said is straight up on point and if there’s anyone who can critique this DISGUSTING defense, it’s Warren. Don’t get all butthurt because he spoke the truth. If you don’t like what he’s saying and what the rest of Tampa Bay is saying………then go out there and change it. We’re not going to stop pounding you guys until you give us reason not to.

I’m not sure what exactly Kwon was responding to – everything Sapp said is 100% correct. As a collective the defense was terrible, the worst in the league. That doesn’t mean individual player are horrible, but the defense, as a whole, is indefensible. Kwon needs to learn about self awareness and when you should listen – and when a 1st ballot HOFer who is an all-time great defensive player and the best to ever plays his position, when he says something, you should listen, consider what he said and then respond.
Kwon overall seems like a nice guy so I’m guessing this is just more ESPN fake news, they probably said something like Warren Sapp said you’re the worst piece of trash ever and your hair looks dumb – your response.

David had a tremendous season, the only reason the Bucs weren’t worse is because of how well David played. Kwon did not have a great season – he wasn’t bad by any means, but he wasn’t good and certainly not great this year. I think Kwon will be good to go next year, but David is the one that should have been in the Pro-Bowl.
LB is by far the strongest group on the defensive side of the ball, but with terrible d-line play in front of them and Chris Conte/Ryan Smith behind them, they have to do a lot.

Kwon was out for how many games? Played hurt in how many more? He had maybe six games healthy. Was LVD healthy all year? The best pass rusher we had goes down at the beginning of the year.
I get all the charges of “excuses” coming from the peanut gallery. Sometimes “excuses” are actually legitimate reasons. So again let’s just look for scapegoats and throw the baby out with the bathwater.
Maybe Kwon could have responded in kind….well we’re not as good as those SB Bucs but at least we don’t have a major arsehole plying DT and out beating up hookers.
I NEVER listen to Sapp. He was a great player…he deserves his HOF props…but if he’s not on the field playing football what’s he good for? He’s not the brightest bulb in the chandelier and it’s well documented he’s a major jerk. Shut yer yap Sapp. Once you came off of the football field you became worthless…what do you have to offer besides enormous football talent?
Some of you guys conflate success in one area with success in another area.
Again….name the number of great players who ever coached in the NFL?
Being a great player has nothing to do with coaching ability or analysis.
The Bucs sucked last year for many reasons. Sorry there is no simple black and white answer. And I know people don’t wish to hear this but LUCK plays a huge role in sports.

Sapp isn’t on the field and he’s no longer playing the game. He’s welcome to talk and spout his opinion, and Kwon (being the one on the field and in the Pro Bowl) is welcome to tell him to STFU.

2001 Jerome Bettis’ – 143yards on 17 carries, 1 pass for a TD and the Steelers D dropped Johnson 10 times. 10!
2017 Bucs weren’t as bad as that team was that day. I, unfortunately, saw that game live.

Sapp helped turn the Yucs into the Bucs. Sapp is a HOF, division, conference, and super bowl champ, that’s why you should pay attention young man. Listen instead to the leader of your defense Capt. Softy, and continue to dwell in the basement of your division.

Wrong.
Truly successful people listen and SEEK the advice of those who had great success in their field before them. Successful people learn from those who have been to where they want to be and accomplished the things they want to accomplish.
Failures don’t listen.
Failures think they know better.
Failures make the exact same mistakes as everyone before them because they refused to listen.
Sapp – forget what we think about his personal life – was a ridiculous success on the field and THE major cog in one of the best defenses in NFL history. He understood the desire and work ethic it took to be the best. He won a ring. He’s in the HOF. He re-defined his position.
If Kwon won’t take advice from Sapp – then there is no one worthy of Kwon’s attention in Kwon’s eyes.
A damn shame.

On a different note I was looking at the rosters for the SB teams and I see three former Bucs,
Blount, Reedy and Najee Goode.
Am I missing anyone? Also anyone know how it compares to prior years? It seems like less than normal.

sapp and that bunch set the bar for defenses in tampa…..we have a losing culture because these dumba$$es don’t want to listen to winners….they think their “losing ways” are the right way…..
notice how the ravens are still considered a great defensive team without ray and ed reed….they set the bar and leaders like suggs wont let it be lowered……

Kwon was in a tough spot there. He should have no commented but thats tough, reporters have a job to do. He either had to throw his teammates and defensive coordinator under the bus or throw it back on sapp. No biggie. N anyone who didnt get the pleasure of seeing sapp play live missed out. One of the best ever. I could care less about his personal life. I dont understand autograph seekers either. Hang in there kwon, with a better coordinator youll be back to one of the best.

Sapp was a freak of nature on the field. He was strong, quick, and messed with opposing players heads. In his prime Sapp was in amazing shape. He had a great motor and truly hated to lose on one snap let alone a whole game. When he speaks about defense, I’m listening.

Out of the park home run comment brother! I completely agree with everything you said. Kwon’s showing his age, his total lack respect to those that came before him that KNOW what it takes to be a champion and how to be a leader. I don’t give two sh!ts what Warren has done off the field. I’ve met the man numerous times when I was a bouncer in Tampa and he was nothing but respectful and accommodating to me and the staff. Kwon needs to stop believing the bullsh$t hype that those ASSCLOWN coaches and GM are telling him. As a whole the defense is a repugnant joke. Kwon you’re nobody compared to Warren, you’ve done nothing in the grand scheme of being a dominating defense. Shut your mouth and know your role. Prove all of us wrong by becoming a dominating, stifling defense like Warren and his defenses were.

Kwon is another blow hard that hasn’t proven anything so special yet. His defense ? What a load of crap. To have the audacity to call a Tampa Bay ledend like Warren Sapp noise shows his ignorance, lack of respect and definite lack of leadership.
If this is an indication of the leadership on our defense, we are in trouble defense we are in trouble.

Finishing 7-9 will not save koetter’s and Smitty’s job next year…or will it? To be honest, nothing surprises me with the Bucs. You guys seriously do not expect he Panthers/Saints or Falcons to get worse now do you? Hell, they are already tweaking! I can understand why many will not spend their hard earned monies to see this team of our next season. So let me advise everybody here except bedwetter Buc Realist…Don’t beleive the off season Hype. Just sit back and watch….the circus unfold.

Doesn’t make sense though … Beckwith played MLB at LSU while Kwon played outside. Beckwith is a bruiser (6’2″ & 243 lbs) while Kwon is a comparative lightweight (6’2″ & 227 lbs). I’d also rather have Lavonte calling plays than Kwon (Lavonte did outstanding calling plays when he did it under Schiano & I think in Lovie’s first year).
I’m sure the main reason for keeping Kwon in the middle is to keep him on the field more. But if the Bucs start using the 3-4 more, David-Beckwith-Kwon-Spence could ALL be on the field. Key IMO is to have the 3 up front be bruisers who can create mayhem & open holes for blitzes, etc while still successfully playing the run. Convinced that a DLine of guys like GMC, McDonald, Poe, Vea or Payne, Gholston could get that done.

No way Mike Smith’s defense was worse than Lovies even with the 5 game stretch excluded. Yards may say so but not points. Mike Smith’s defense has been a poor mans bend but don’t break defense. Lovie Smith’s defense was a bend and break with Mike Jenkins falling down somewhere.

DE – DT 1st and 2nd this year….
DE – DT 1st and 2nd next year and our D line should be rolling pretty good for a while. CB’s and Safeties still in FA, although im not against drafting Fitz or James IF thats the BPA in the 1st and we have DE and DT targeted next.

That’s ELEVEN players … and we have SEVEN draft picks … and the ONLY draft picks you can sort of say, “we can get so and so or such and such a position” is the 5th and two 6th rounders as there basically developmental guys anyways … for example the team can say, “we’ll get a developmental OT in the 5th and an extra CB and RB in the 6th” … but you can’t even count on the two 6th rounders to make it out of training camp, so you don’t “count them” per se.
So, let’s say that’s the case … the team pencils in an OT, CB and RB in the 5-6th rounds and brings back Pamphile, Grimes and Simms but doesn’t count the two 6th round picks … that would mean they need:
2 DEs
1 DT
2 CBs
1 SS
1 G
1 RB
That’s eight guys and we have FOUR picks and maybe 5 or 6 if we trade down with the Bills but the team can’t depend on a trade down … so … 4 picks and 8 players needed which means the team needs to sort of predict who they’re going to draft, or at least which positions and sign the other four players in FREE AGENCY.
The above said … I think we can draft a DE, DT, G and CB in the draft … this is a deep CB/DT draft and we should at least be able to find one solid DE and G … which means we will NEED to SIGN IN FREE AGENCY, the following: DE, SS, CB and RB.
SO ALL OF THE ABOVE SAID … here’s what I’m thinking:
FREE AGENCY SIGNINGS:
1 DE: Ziggy or Ealy or Autry or Bennett … or Aldon Smith
1 SS: LaMarcus Joyner or Tre Boston or Eric Reid or Mogan Burnett
1 CB: Trumaine or Malcolm or EJ or Prince/Fuller or Cockrell or Talib
1 RB: Lev Bell or Carlos Hyde or Isaiah Crowell or Jeremy Hill or Darkwa

1 DE: Chubb/Davenport/Key/Hubbard (1st)/ or Ejiofor/Armstrong (2nd)
1 DT: Tons to choose from the 1st round through the 3rd round
1 CB: Tons to choose from the 1st round through the 4th round
1 G: Quenton (1st) or Price (2nd) or Hernandez (3rd) or Ragnow (4th round)
ALL OF THE ABOVE SAID … there are tons of combinations one could come up with, but I do think the Bucs can fill ALL their needs on both sides of the ball by the time the draft is done, quite easily actually.

MARCUS DAVENPORT was named the D-Line MVP at the Senior Bowl and Mike Mayock just compared him to Jadeveon Clowney … well, I love Mayock and I hope he’s right if we draft this kid … but I’d rather trade down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If we do go DE Davenport + DT Nnandi + CB Averett + G/C Ragnow + Desmond Harrison in the first 5 rounds though … that’s a pretty solid draft it seems to me … and if we can add a top corner, strong safety, RB and another starting quality DE we should be sitting pretty for the 2018 season.

If Warren Sapp was still a player and in Kwon’s shoes what would he say? I could see him saying exactly what Kwon said!
58 knows that it’s up to him to get this right and start holding people accountable like he was starting to do when he yelled at Baker.

While you’re doing your needs and solutions just remember that draft picks bust at a rate of 50%. So seven picks represent 3-4 players not 7. Of course these can be augmented by UDFA’s which Licht has done pretty well.
Our drafts and UFDA’s are not the problem…we’re actually ahead of the stats.
It’s our FA acquistions that have hurt.
People now keep bringing up the Eagles. They haven’t outdrafted us…but they’ve certainly blown us away in terms of FA contributions.

Alaskan – Warren Sapp never played on a defense that finished last in the league, if he had, I don’t think anyone would have needed to tell him the defense stunk nor do I think he’d just say nah, everything is great, we aren’t listening to outside noise. Come on, do you know anything about Sapp – if he wasn’t at the top of his game or if the defense had a bad game he was the first guy calling himself out and everyone else.

NFLNut – Isn’t Justin Evans considered a SS? I’m not sure he’s a one position guy since he has the speed to play FS or SS, but he is listed as a SS.

Ya Rod you sure know your Sapp huh? So why was his defense ranked 31, 25, 18, and 26th during his time in Oakland? I guess you were right about one thing, his defense was never dead last. I guess even a broken clock is right twice a day.
